AMGEN, Tour of California Bike Race

For the second time in three years, Stephen Kroener has been asked to make a commerative blend for the Amgen Tour of California Bike Race that takes place this month. Stage 5 of this race will start in Seaside, CA and will finish in downtown Paso Robles, CA on May 19th. Steve has been asked to put together a blend that reflects the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area and its community. This year the wine is a blend of two grape varietals: Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Both grape varietals have a significant impact in the Paso Robles region and are the focus of numerous wineries in the area. The blend is fruit forward, well-balanced with acidity and tannin, and a great food wine. It will be handed out as a gift to the team riders, sponsors, and organizers of the race. There is also a 9 liter trophy bottle that will be awarded to the winner of the Stage 5 race. This trophy weighs 60 pounds, holds the equivalent to 12 bottles of wine, and is beautifully etched with the logo for this Stage of the race. Starting the first week of May, you can catch all the hype about this wine and the race on local radio and television broadcasts. But if you are a true fan of wine and racing, come to downtown Paso Robles May 19th and check out the action for yourself!
Harvest Time is upon us!

Yep...Silver Horse Winery is in full swing harvest mode. Everything is looking great this year! We are as full as we have ever been. Right now we have our Cab. Sauv. fermenting in the big stainless steal vats. Petit Verdot, Petit Sirah, Tempranillo, Syrah, Grenache are all cooking away changing those sugars into alcohol. And guess what! We are doing a Merlot port/late harvest wine(with a little bit of Petit Sirah)...it's been a while since the Zin Port. Our last bottle went bye bye about a year and half ago. So get your taste buds ready...well they'll have to wait till spring 2011...but trust me, it will be way worth the wait.

Wine Club Shipment almost ready!

The spring wine shipment is getting close to getting shipped out. Look on your door step sometime between May 4th and 11th! This shipment is going to have....our 2008 Albarino, 2006 Tomori & 2007 Tomori. Steve will be blogging later about the wines you'll be receiving.

Well, we just got finished bottling our 2007 vintage and I can't wait till we release them. Truthfully, I forgot what a lot of them taste like. After 2 whole days of putting blends together, it takes a toll on your pallet and brain. Yet I still did really enjoy it!!! I do remember 2 of my favorites...the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and The Big Easy. Not sure when they will be released, but I'll be sure to let you know!

With that said look for Steve's blog to show up in the next couple of days regarding the wines that will be in the spring shipment.

AMGEN Tour of California – Silver Horse Winery

Some of you may have heard or seen that Silver Horse Winery was responsible for the commemorative blend for the AMGEN Tour of California Stage 5 Race. Stage 5 was the longest stage of the tour starting in Visalia, CA and finishing in Paso Robles, CA. there was an estimated 30,000 people that were on hand to witness the finish of the race that in included world class riders such as Levi Leipheimer (overall AGMEN winner), Marc Cavendish (fastest rider in the world and winner of Stage 5) and Lance Armstrong! It was a great event and great exposure to Paso Robles.

So you may be asking yourself what this has to do with Silver Horse Winery. Well every stage of any bike race, be it the Tour de France, Tour de Espania, or Amgen Tour of California, offers a trophy to that stage winner. This trophy represents the area/town in which that stage is finished. Being that the Paso Robles AVA (American Viticultural Area)wineries are the main draw for travelers the area, the City of Paso Robles wanted to present the winner of Stage 5 with a bottle of wine! That’s where Silver Horse Winery and I come in.

The City of Paso Robles wanted a wine that would not only reflect the AVA as a whole but also the active lifestyle of the people with the city. They left the decision to the Paso Robles Wine County Alliance (PRWCA our AVA’s think tank if you will) to decide who it would be to make this commemorative blend.
They chose Silver Horse Winery because we are a great representation of what the Paso Robles wine region is all about. We are small. We are family owned. We make great diversified wines. They also liked the fact that I live a very active lifestyle and would represent not only Silver Horse Winery well but also the City of Paso Robles too!

The Blend that I put together was a blend from for different lots of grapes. Two Cabernet Sauvignon lots, one Merlot, and one Petit Verdot. The final blend consisted of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 25% Petit Verdot. There was a total of 80 cases made of this wine. Of which a large portion went to the riders and there sponsors. There are a few bottles flying around that might go for a pretty penny so be on the lookout. The trophy was a 9L bottle (or one cases of wine) hand etched and hand painted. It weighed 50 lbs and was beautiful. The “Street Value” of this wine is $1200.00. So Marc Cavendish…don’t drop it!

According to some friends in the bike racing industry, the commemorative blend is being well received by the people to whom it was giving. It was a great honor to be asked to make this wine and would love to do it again. I want to thank the City of Paso Robles and the PRWCA for allowing me to participate in this great event!

Cheers,
