Silver Lake College Offers Tours During Private College Week – July 11 to 16, 2011

Selecting a college is a big decision for students of all ages. Private College Week – Monday, July 11 through Saturday, July 16 – is designed to make the job a little easier. For the thirteenth straight year, all of Wisconsin’s 20 private nonprofit colleges and universities, including Silver Lake College, will hold a joint “open house.” Throughout the week-long event, the colleges offer guided campus tours that give students and their families a chance to gain an appreciation of the school, meet with staff from the admissions and financial aid departments, and visit classrooms, residence halls, and other facilities. And there is an added benefit for students—a waiver of application fees at each campus they visit.

Look Ahead Lakers Program Begins March 24

Silver Lake College will host over one hundred fifth graders on Thursday, March 24, as they kick off their new Look Ahead Lakers program. The Look Ahead Lakers program, modeled after UW-GB’s Phuture Phoenix program, is designed to give fifth grade students from low-income families a peek into higher education—an opportunity that many of these students would otherwise never consider.

The Look Ahead Lakers program is funded by the Wisconsin College Access Challenge Grant. Both UW- Green Bay and Silver Lake College are receiving support from the two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, administered by Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation.

On March 24, 120 fifth graders from Jefferson and Franklin elementary schools will come to Silver Lake to be introduced to college life. About thirty Silver Lake College students will serve as mentors in the program. After meeting their mentors, the fifth graders will take a tour of Silver Lake College, and then will participate in actual college classes with their mentors.

After March 24^th, Silver Lake students will follow up with their assigned students at their own schools, providing ongoing tutoring and academic support. The hope is that these on-going relationships will help the less privileged students to consider pursuing higher education some day.

“The Look Ahead Lakers program is a wonderful opportunity for the youth in our community. It will provide students with positive role models, an opportunity to experience college, and the necessary information and skills needed to enroll in a post-secondary school, making higher education much more attainable. We are confident that the program will inspire students to dream big and pursue their dreams with higher education, regardless of their background,” says Look Ahead Lakers Program Coordinator, Tara Wachowski.

Poet Derrick Harriell to read at SLC on March 15

On Tuesday, March 15, Derrick Harriell will give a reading at Silver Lake College. Harriell will read poems from his recently released book, Cotton, at noon in the Grand Lounge. The event, sponsored by the college’s English program, is free and open to the public.

Derrick Harriell, a native of Milwaukee, holds an MFA from Chicago State University. Harriell is currently a dissertator at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he teaches creative writing and serves as Poetry Editor for Cream City Review.

Maurice Kilwein Guevara, author of Poema, has called Harriell’s Cotton a “mural in poems.” Kilwein Guevara writes, “The characters that inhabit this vivid tableau step into an active third dimension and allow us to witness the vicissitudes of their daily struggles, triumphs large and small, private desires. The community here is anchored by a specific mid-Western, African-American family which, in spite of both external and internal challenges, maintains its unity, however precarious at times.”

Silver Lake College Presents Sophomore/Franciscan Value Exhibit

Silver Lake College invites the public to the sophomore exhibit of Andrew Carstens beginning February 10^th and continuing through February 28th, 2011. All are welcome.

Andrew Cartens exhibits much potential for creative work. He is a conceptual artist and encourages viewers of his art to think more deeply about the reality around them. He has several very interesting drawings, as well as an altered book, that evoke discussion.

Along with the Sophomore Exhibit will be works of art by students addressing the Franciscan Values of Peacemaking, Community, Reverence for Creation, and Compassion.

The exhibit is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

SLC to host Elizabeth Cortez: Senior Exhibition and Franciscan Values Exhibits

Silver Lake College invites the public to attend the art exhibit, Elizabeth Cortez: Senior Exhibition. The exhibit, which features works of art Ms. Cortez completed as a studio art major at SLC, will appear in the art hallway from January 17-February 7, 2011. A free and open to the public reception will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 4:00 -6:00 p.m.

During her time at SLC, Ms. Cortez was awarded the Donna Dart Memorial Art Scholarship and the Silver Lake Art Department Scholarship. Her photography has been published in Photography Vibes Best of Edition, Collected Impressions: The International Congress of Photography, and Silver Reflections, the Silver Lake College Literary Magazine.

Ms. Cortez says, “I developed an interest in art by the second grade. My parents recognized my ability to draw in many of the booklets I had done in Mrs. Kester’s class, such as a book I called, “The Me Book.” She continued to take many art classes in middle school and high school. Her current art is inspired by nature and her reverence for God as Creator. She says, “As I see each detail in God’s creations, I aspire to be an imitator of the Master Artist. Every detail I see causes me to stop and take a closer look.”

The exhibit is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday: from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Silver Lake College invites prospective transfer students to a Campus Visit Day on Friday, January 7 and 8 to learn more about Silver Lake College’s many degree programs and flexible delivery options. The Visit Day will be held on Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am – 12 noon at the Generose Enrichment Center on the Silver Lake College Campus.

This Visit Day is designed to provide information to students on transferring credits to Silver Lake College, showcase the affordability of a Silver Lake College education, and offer insight as to how a degree from Silver Lake College can provide options for a successful future.

Bishop Ricken to celebrate SLC’s Anniversary Year with Concluding Mass

Since the beginning of 2010, Silver Lake College has been celebrating the 75^th anniversary of its charter as a four-year institution of higher education. January featured an Opening Anniversary Mass with Bishop Morneau, who taught at Silver Lake College before becoming a bishop. The year-long celebration continued with monthly anniversary events, including a Silver Lake Chorale Performance Tour, the Scholarship Gala, Alumni Weekend, a special ceremony with Senator Herb Kohl, and the launch of the new Franciscan Liberal Arts Curriculum.

On Sunday, December 12, Bishop David Ricken will celebrate the Closing Anniversary Mass to draw the year of celebration to a close. The liturgy will begin at 11:30 a.m.. The public is welcome to join as Silver Lake College celebrates its educational legacy at the close of this milestone year. A reception, also open to the public, will follow the liturgy.
