Osa and I got a dose of la playa last weekend and let me tell you, it recharged me and at the same time, relaxed me. We needed that! I wish G could've joined us, but he was holding down the fort in Vegas (did I tell you he's on the Airstream 2 Go team now too?!). Yup, I am soooo glad to have him on board and in Vegas with us!

Here are some photos from our coastal adventure. Our motivation was an invitation from Coastal Living magazine to include us in an upcoming article. Hey, you can twist my arm to hit the beach anytime!

diy project: theater letters for the office

OH, how wonderful you look today, OH

The walls in my apartment needed a little something. Naturally, I headed to my latest favorite shop, SWAG. SWAG is too close to my apartment for my own good (it's also diagonal from the "Pawn Stars" shop if you're ever in the area). The owners are wonderful and they're always updating their Facebook page with their latest finds. They have a room in the back of the store where I've found some good treasures, including these old theater letters. They had the letters S H O hanging on the wall. Stacked to the side they also have an I and a U. For a while I was tempted to get the H O for Jay's last name, but I thought that would be... well more of a constant reminder. Then I thought OH! Ohhhhhhh?... Oooohhhhh. The word OH is so great! With different tweaks of inflection, it can express so much!

Oh, what a great interjection it is! Here is my OH project.

Osa provides encouraging creative support. She's thrilled in a really relaxed way.

Theater Letters Project

This is a pretty simple DIY project, and hopefully it will inspire you to find your personal word.

What you'll need:

Theater letters
Hair dryer
Olive Oil
Cotton balls or pads
Nails
Hammer
Level

So, first to locate the theater letters. There's Craig's List, Etsy and of course your local antique store. Here's how the letters looked when I bought them.

The price stickers were a little stubborn to remove, so I loosened them with the heat from a hair dryer.

To remove the rest of the sticky goo and get an uniform black without painting the letter, I used a couple of drops of olive oil on a cotton pad. (I got the glass holder for the cotton from SWAG too).

Coat the surface very lightly with the olive oil and focus on getting the sticker remains off. Remove excess olive oil with a clean cotton pad

Get out your level, hammer and nails, and hang in the perfect spot.

You can sharpie the nail heads black if you want them to blend with the letters.

OH! How lovely.

We were featured on HGTV's show, Retro Roadhomes, RV's Gone Crazy!

It's a dream come true for me to have my Airstreams and jewelry featured on HGTV.

We had a lot of fun that day and I am so grateful to HGTV for including me in the show.

It just goes to show, if you stick with your passion, eventually it will happen!

discovering vegas: Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health

Today Osa and I took a nice walk to a building that I'm thrilled to have in my backyard (well, 10 blocks from my apartment, to be exact). It's the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health designed by Frank Gehry.

Not only is it a stunning structure, they provide valuable services to patients in need of their services:

"The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health provides care to patients with memory and movement disorders at Cleveland Clinic locations across the United States".

It was 77degrees today which made for a beautiful blue sky backdrop behind the building. I could photograph this building all day...

Other good news, they have an outdoor cafe!

It's closed on Sundays, but I'll be back another day for sure.

Osa and I took a rest on a bench in front of the glass sculpture.

But wait, there's more... they're across the street from the Design Center.

(The Design Center will be my next "discovery destination").

See friends? There is life beyond The Strip and it is an endless spring of inspiration!

Next time you're in town, I suggest a trip to see the building (schedule a tour in advance) and have some lunch at their cafe.

living in downtown las vegas

Wow, there's a lot to catch up on! I'm now living in downtown Las Vegas, NV and Lotus, CA. The two places couldn't be more different, yet are similar in a familiar and small town feel kind of way. G and Pony will be holding down the nest in Lotus and will be my rays of sunshine with their visits. I hope to post regularly from my happy nest here in downtown Vegas. It's a fun adventure I'd like to share and record. For now, here's the start of my little sanctuary. I am loving being a city girl again. Stay tuned for more adventures from downtown... Thank you so much for being a part of the journey.

Good Day Sacramento TV appearance

Last weekend I enjoyed being on the set of Good Day Sacramento, showing off my 1964 Airstream Bambi II, 1960 Airstream Caravel as well as my jewelry lines. It was live and we did three short segments and interviews. What fun! I'm not able to post them here at the request of the station, but I enjoyed my day and the animated interviewers, Amy Carraba and Cody Stark. Plus, I finally got to give G his shout out on live T.V..

I mentioned to G that it's a good sign that I automatically clasped my hands to my heart when she asked me about him. (If you've ever seen the Seinfeld episode about touching your head when someone asks you a question, you can appreciate that!). I told her that G has been by my side and has been an amazing support over the past decade as I celebrate Silver Trailer's ten year anniversary.

It was a fun and surreal experience that really makes you think on your feet. I figure you have to try everything at least once, right? I'm so glad I did.

Veuve Clicquot & Silver Trailer's Airstream

It was a happy collaboration with Veuve Clicquot who used my our 1961 Airstream Globetrotter, Luxe Lounge as a mobile tasting room throughout California. Look at that "Cliquot Yellow" pop! A happy customer makes me happy.

It must be the fact that it's September and the school kid in me is ready to set out my outfit for the next day and start anew. Well, it's also time to shape up, and that means visiting the gym again. No one would accuse me of being a morning person, so having my workout stuff ready to go by the door in a nice retro bundle seemed the best way to go. This little blue bowling bag came with our house when we bought it, and it was either time to put the bag to use, or time to drop it off at the thrift store.

I decided to turn my little blue bowling bag in to a gym bag. I didn't alter a thing, just unzipped and inserted the items I'd need while my eyes are half open:

~Gym bag - you can find one at a second hand store

~Sneakers (these can be covered with those clear hotel shower caps if you'd like

~Socks

~Towel- one of those quick dry travel ones

~Toiletries - tucked in the front pocket

~Headphones - they hang nicely on the metal support.

~Change of clothes.

Now to get myself out the door...!

A visual packing list: 10 days in Europe / 10 essentials

Okay, I have a secret. I'm a chronic packer and re-packer. Packing is such a science, and I want to get it just right every time. What can I say? I'm into small space efficiency, it's my thing- so when my husband walks into the garage sees me at the vice taking a hacksaw to my toothbrush to make it smaller, he doesn't bat an eye. (Those dinky travel toothbrushes just don't cut it, am I right?).
Ladies and gentlemen... I got it right this time after 20 years of international packing!
I'm at the end of my 10 day trip in Europe (and almost 2 weeks in NY before that). I made a visual reference guide to refer to next time I'm in a packing crisis. This is more or less what I packed for 10 days in Denmark in August- 70 degree days on average. I have a carry on suitcase that I still have room in to bring home a tablecloth, soap dispenser and some other gifts. (Not shown are ballet flats for the plane). I'd also like if I had packed my Modaspia summer dress for the beach and mayyyybe my ipad. I really only missed it for these blog posts. If you're a guy reading this, hopefully you can get the basics from this list, like swap our the skirts for dress shorts or pants.
My messenger bag was great for biking around Copenhagen and my overnight trip to the beach. Other times I would grab my clutch and a collapsible shopping bag.

Here are the top 10 essentials I was glad to have with me:

1. Ortlieb messenger bag

2. Fossil wristlet

3. Sketchbook, pen, small scissors, and washi tape. You can bring small scissors on the plane if you put them in plain site with your toiletries through airport security.

4. Passport and ticket holder (also holds foreign currency, itinerary, tickets, memo pad, pen)

5. Targus travel adapter & iphone / ipad charger

6. Pouch to hold electronics including headphones for the plane

7. Muji toiletries bag with Muji pump bottles

8. Zip pouch to hold bras & underwear

9. Zip pouch to hold rolled up tank tops, shirts and scarves

10. Sneaker flats

Copenhagen, Day 8: Floating Hotel

Boathouses. That's the next big thing... at least in my world. I searched airbnb.com before I left for a boathouse I could stay in here in or around Copenhagen. While I did end up finding two great houseboats to stay in, the one boat I really wanted to stay in was booked. While walking on the canal, I stooped in my tracks when I saw this floating hotel, CPHLiving just two blocks from my apartment. I HAD to stay there!

I met Morten and Rose, a sweet couple who run the hotel and they told me I had the option of an upstairs or downstairs room. I asked to see both options (hey, this was a major decision!). I thought for sure I'd want to stay on a top room, but when Rose opened the door to room #3, the same room I photographed the day I saw the hotel, I was breathless! There was no mistaking being on the water in this room, you were right there with the action. So room #3 it was.

To get my top floor fix, I hung out on the rooftop deck where they have a jumbo hammock as well as tables and chairs to hang out in.

I had an amazing day, watching all of the boats go by and saying hello to kayakers who would pass right by my open door. When G is with me, we'll stay in a room upstairs for more privacy, for me this time, it was a fun and social place to stay, bobbing right on the water. CPHLiving : Highly recommended!

Denmark: Day 7. Train to Hornbæk

Well, so far I've traveled by bike, car, and by foot on this trip, so it was time to take the train. I heard about a quaint beach town called, Hornbæk, so I headed up north with a stop off at the famous, Louisiana museum. Boy, to a non-Danish speaker, some of the towns en route sound very similar.
"You take the S train in Kobenhavn to Humlebæk. In Humlebæk, you'll transfer and take a train to Helsingør. In Helsingør, you take a train to Hornbæk". Wait, whuuuut???!! Mind you, those towns were pronounced with a nice heavy Danish accent on top of it.

Until I learn to speak Danish (another goal), I've made my life easier by storing a sticky note pad and pen, (along with my map, cash, passport and tickets), when I want to jot down directions- or better yet, have the person giving the directions kindly write them down for me. Let's just say I'm feeling pretty proud of myself for figuring it out without ending up elsewhere!

Handy solution to keeping it all in one place

Louisiana was gorgeous. There's a great architecture show going on now. Truthfully, I got the most out of bonding with the outdoor Calder sculpture, a couple making playful shadows together and photographing them, and watching crazy kids roll down the hill one after another. It's what I needed- lightness.

Hornbæk was a treat. I made my own picnic on the beach surrounded by families doing the same. Luckily I found a room and was off to København this morning. One day soon I hope to return to here with G and have a picnic of our own. We're calling this my "scouting mission".

Day 6: Kristiana goes to Christiania

Have you read the Chronicles of Narnia? Well, I did as a kid, and that's what the mystique that Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen has been for me for the past five or so years. It was my Narnia. I heard about the neighborhood of Christiania, here in Copenhagen, from a guy who visited my Airstream one year at open studios in San Francisco. He picked up my business card, read my name, and said, "You must go to Christiania in Denmark". And so my goal was set. Well, yesterday I finally visited Christiania for Day 6 of my inspiration vacation in Denmark. No photos are allowed on the inside of Christiania, and I don't like to step on toes, so this collage of images is from my journey starting in the apartment where I'm staying, to and from, as well as the walls and little discoveries around Christiania. I'm glad I went. As I ate at the vegetarian restaurant in the town (delicious, by the way), I thought to myself, "A goal and dream have been fufilled, a mystery unveiled". Cheers to you, Christiania!

I'm typing this post on my iphone from my apartment (for the week), in Copenhagen, Denmark! This is day 6 of my adventure, and what an inspiring journey it has been.
I've been making a collage of photos from each day to summarize where I went, and things that inspired. It is absolute endless inspiration, I'm
already scheming a return
visit... I've posted these on my Facebook page and its been fun to keep in touch with friends that way, it feels like they're on the inspiration vacation with me.

Look who's lucky enough to be on the opening page (Moi & Alison Turner).

On the day of the shoot, the photographer asked if I'd mind leaving my campsite to tow my Airstream up a steep cliff for a photograph. "Sure, why not?!" I told him. I'm so glad I did- great shot!

The wheels are in motion- I am headed to Denmark in August and while I'm there I'll be attending the Copenhagen International Jewelry Fair. I'm so excited to cover this event & to travel around and be inspired by the fabulous design of Scandinavia. I've booked my first two nights at a place through airbnb.com in a flat just blocks from the Bella Center where the trade show is being held. To say I'm excited is an understatement!

Camping & photo shoot with Alison and Marie Claire

Alison, Kristiana & Osa, aka the "van chicks"

I'm headed to Big Sur, California today with my Airstream Caravel in tow and Osa as co-pilot. It's a part camping, part photo shoot adventure.

My friend Alison was contacted by Marie Claire magazine, the French edition, about being included in an article on women who camp. Alison accepted and told them about me. So this is the week that we meet up in Big Sur for the shoot. Should be fun, and interesting since it's dry camping; makes for interesting uhh, "natural girl" photos. Good thing we're both pretty low maintenance, our doggies too.

Alison is one of my besties- she's my new old friend. It feels like I grew up with her, by the way we know each other, our quirks and personal tastes.
We have become compatible road trip sisters and now that she has her Eurovan and I have my van, "Holiday, we're the "Van Chicks".

Two summers ago Alison was road tripping east from California with Max, while I was headed on my return road trip west with Osa. We somehow coordinated to meet right on the fold of my road map, in South Dakota. Seeing a friend while you're miles and miles from home is a treat. It's a comfort and a way to process what you've seen and learned up to that point. It's sharing stories over weak coffee at a greasy spoon diner. It's learning about eachother's childhood stories and putting together the puzzle pieces. It recharges the batteries for the rest of the trip.

Thanks, Alison, for the endless inspiration, brainstorm sessions and fun friendship. I look forward to our adventure this week!

diy vintage polaroid case ipad holder

Here's a project I came up with while on a shoot. I had my vintage Polaroid case on hand as a prop. I camped with Osa the next night and was juggling my ipad in bed while watching a movie. I thought, hmmmmm... let's see if my ipad and polaroid case want to spend some time together. Sure enough, it was a match!

It's a simple project:
1. Locate a Polaroid Land Camera SX-70 case. (A very sexy camera, by the way, so you may want to find a case with the camera).
(Try Ebay, Craig's List, and Etsy)
2. Empty contents of case
3. Use scissors to cut the divider inside the case
4. Insert iPad for transport -or-
5. Place iPad in lid to use as holder

Voila! Old school & new school all in one!

The Boathouse transformation

G and I are making plans for summer with the arrival of spring.

Boy, sometimes we have to remember to just be in the moment!

Anyway, I started thinking of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Boathouse.

I never did finish the post about the completion of the Boathouse makeover, so here it is... (Written previously)

If you happened to be following my blog this summer, you know that I caught the "boating bug". This is a result of spending lucky summer after summer on Lake Winnipesaukee. This summer as luck would have it, I had the new project of taking on this boathouse project at The Point on Six Mile Island.

The property is Ma Spaulding's beautiful rental house on the lake with magnificent views.

This little boathouse cabin is detached from the main house and was used to store various items, including the fun necessities for lake pleasure: floats, boats, oars and life jackets.

My mission was to transform this space on a budget using only paint, existing items, and some serious organization. The space had potential, but the rafters were cluttered, the wood walls were badly stained, and there was a great need for organization.

How fun to see Betty Jane on T.V.! You may remember when we collaborated with Biscuit Filmworks using my 1964 Airstream Bambi II for the SafeCo Insurance commercial a few months back.
What a treat it was to see it on T.V. one evening last week as we were lounged out at home. They did a great job!

"Twigging" - Towing with a wig on

The past couple of shows I've done, in San Francisco and Palm Springs, I sported my favorite lavender wig at some point during the show. Open Studios in San Francisco fell on Halloween last year and there was a 60's party in Palm Springs.

Wearing a wig automatically puts me in a good mood (except when it starts getting itchy!), and gives me a feeling of being slightly anonymous.

I towed the Airstream home while wearing the wig and decided I'd like to do more "twigging". Sounds like a good term for it, right?!

It put me in a good mood and made the ride that much more fun.

Little did I know, it's related to the definitions of twig I found online:

Verb: "To observe or notice". Noun: "style; fashion"
