Netflix Tech Support Scam

Scammers are going to great lengths to get your money, so far that they're setting up fake Netflix call centers to trick customers into thinking hackers have infiltrated their computers.
One of these scams works by making the customer think that they've been locked out of their Netflix account, at which point they're given a number to call. That phone number directs to a fake Netflix call center, answered by a real person, who will tell the customer that they've been hacked and that the hacker has control of their account. The rep will ask the customer to download "Netflix Support Software," which will actually be software that allows them access into your system and your files.

After switching from a customer service rep to a technician, they'll run another fake program that, to the untrained eye, will look legit. The rep and technician will work to get the customer frightened of having their information and pictures taken by hackers, and by doing so, will make them feel like buying better security is a must, and they'll offer it. After claiming that they secured the computer, they'll ask for a payment—for doing nothing.

The video below is an actual recorded conversation with these scammers, from Jerome Segura, who tracks tech support scams. "By running their own tool, which looks authentic, the crooks can detect 'problems' that do not exist," he told ArsTechnica. "Finally, showing those scan results adds to the fear factor, as well as creating a sense of urgency to fix the issue."

"The Neftlix theme was well thought out—from the suspended account ploy to the discount coupon if you agree to fix the issue, the bad guys have planned their approach in detail," Segura continued. "Requesting a photo ID, as well as a snapshot of my credit card, was completely novel too. Despite being the untrustworthy ones, it is ironic they are trying to make sure the mark is not playing them. Aside from the fact that it is creepy, it creates a huge identity theft risk."

Windows XP End Of Life

As the deadline for Windows XP’s ‘End of Life’ continues to grow closer, Microsoft has taken another step forward in cutting out support for the aging operating system. Starting April 8, the Windows XP version of Microsoft Security Essentials will also be discontinued in tandem with support for XP.

The following information update was recently added to the support page about the ‘End of Life’ for Windows XP… From the Microsoft Support Page: After April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC.

Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. This is another nail in XP’s coffin via the Microsoft hammer for those who have been hoping for a last-minute reprieve from Microsoft. If you are one of the people choosing to hold out, your only options for anti-virus protection after April 8th will be via third-party security vendors.

Chrome/Firefox/Safari: Boomerang, a popular browser extension for Gmail users, schedules your messages to be sent at a later time or reappear in your inbox at some point in the future. For awhile, you had to use a "manage page" to edit and scheduled items, but now you can do that directly from the message itself in Gmail.

The latest update makes this super simple. To edit a scheduled message, all you have to do is open it up in Gmail and click the edit button. Then, change the date and time to what you want. To use this feature now, just update your extension. If you're new to Boomerang, you can find the latest version here.

Google promised that we'd get hands-free voice search in Chrome back at I/O 2013, and it's delivering today with the beta of its Voice Search Hotword extension for desktop Chrome 31 users.

As long as you're either sitting at Google's home page or have a new browser tab open, the add-on lets you start a search by saying "OK Google," much as you would in Android 4.4 KitKat. Anyone eager to move beyond mouse-and-keyboard queries can grab the extension today from the Chrome Web Store.

Sometimes you plug your USB flash drive in, the system will tell you that the drive is not ready or the drive is not accessible, at this situation, you need to check out that the physical connection is right, if it’s right, but you still cannot read the data, it comes the USB flash drive not formatted error, at this occasion, don’t touch any keyboard, Don't click on the format, this will erase all of your data. Simply unplug the device and try it again. If all fails you can always try it in another computer and see if it still gives you the same issue.

What causes this Error? Many users eject the device too fast that causes some errors inside the drive and the computer simply thinks its new. Other times its a virus or just extra written data that is corrupted inside the storage device. It can be lots of reasons why but these are the biggest ones I've found so far.

Windows XP End Support

The deadline for the end of Windows XP support is drawing closer every day now, yet many people and businesses continue to use it. Microsoft is adamant that once April 8th comes and goes, there will be no end-of-life extensions, assisted support options, or online technical content updates of any kind, period. With this in mind, many security experts are expecting malware authors to start stockpiling exploits and vulnerabilities in the lead-up to the cut-off date.

If you are using Windows XP, will you take a chance and continue using the operating system beyond the deadline? Perhaps you have updated all your systems to newer versions already, but know people who have not for a variety of reasons?

Printer Troubleshooting (Basics)

We’ve all had it happen. For whatever reason your printer has stopped working. But why now? You have an important report to get out ASAP. Well, before you take the printer to get fixed, there’s some basic printer troubleshooting you can do to speed you along. The simplest and often times best solution is a printer reboot. If after this you still need help, please schedule an appointment here.

Here are the steps:
1. Turn off Printer

2. Unplug ALL cords from back

3. Leave printer unplugged for 1 minute

4. Reboot the PC while the printer is unplugged

5. When the computer is back up, re-attach all the printer cords

6. Plugin printer

7. Turn on printer Look for indicator lights and “ready” or “OK” Is everything green/good to go? Do you see errors on the screen? Test print something

8. If these simple steps fail, then you may be experiencing driver conflicts or other issues with the computer such as junkware (internet browser issues, Windows updates, etc)

Photo Geotagging Security Risk

Do you take photos with your smartphone and post them online?
Innocent photos of your children or snapshots of family get-togethers that you want to remember are common on social media sites.

However, these photos pose a serious and dangerous privacy risk.
Thieves and criminals can find the exact location where your photos were taken, via the GPS on your smartphone – whether that’s your child’s bedroom or your favorite restaurant.
This security concern has been around for quite a while – but privacy breaches will continue, as long as geo-tracking is enabled by default on your family’s photos.

The software behind the photos includes geo-tags, according to Deep Medhi, a computer science professor at UMKC.
These are geographical tags that store where and when the photo was taken, similar to the type of technology used in GPS devices.
Your smartphone automatically stores the location where the photos were taken, whether it is at a local park, your child’s day care center, or even your own home.
Anyone can easily translate these geo-tags through browser add-ons that are completely free to download. The add-ons or apps turn the geo-tags into mapped locations to make it easier for human eyes to determine the location.

Technology is continually developing, and privacy is an ongoing problem – particularly for social media sites like Facebook. If you’re not careful, you could be giving criminals all the information they need to harm you
and your family. For now, make sure your GPS settings are set to the level of control that you want them, and be careful when posting pictures online. It takes just a free browser add-on to get more information than just the image shows.

How Do you Protect Yourself?

This video explores how the Damsel in Distress became one of the most widely used gendered clichés in the history of gaming and why the trope has been core to the popularization and development of the medium itself.

Experts are warning about a computer virus that is appearing as an official government warning.
The scam pops up as a message from Homeland Security and totally disables the computer. The message warns that computer laws were broken and a $300 fine must be paid immediately.
The warning page is a scam designed to scare people.

Computer experts say infected computers need to have the virus removed professionally and to never pay the fine that is demanded.

They also advise computer owners keep up-to-date with antivirus software.
