We’ve just enabled the new Watching Now feature, which lets your friends know what you’re watching!

We just launched Watching Now on Simkl! It’s the simplest way to track what’s on your screen — one check-in at a time and share with your friends.

Perfect for:

At the movies
Check in when the film starts, put your phone away, and it’s marked watched when you leave.

Watching live TV
Cable, satellite, or a friend’s streaming account with no Simkl integration? My Watch History: Your viewing diary

My Watch History is the central timeline of your TV, anime, and movie life on Simkl.

Instead of a flat list, you now see your activity grouped by day, week, and month. Each section shows how long you watched, when you were most active, and which titles kept pulling you back.

What you’ll see

Chronological feed of everything you watched
Scroll through your history with clear date groupings. You can jump from “What I watched today” to “What I was obsessed with in November” in seconds

— Weekly and monthly summaries
At a glance, you’ll get:
— Total time watched
— Days with activity
— Average per day
— Most active day
— Most popular time of day you watch
— Longest binge
— Your most‑watched shows for that period

Episodes grouped
Shows are automatically grouped where there are multiple episodes binged on the same day.

Take control of your timeline

We also wanted history to be something you can clean up, not just stare at:

Edit or remove plays directly
Marked the wrong episode? Logged a movie you didn’t finish? Open the entry and fix it right there.

Bulk delete mode
Need to tidy up a batch of test plays or accidental logs? Turn on selection mode, select multiple items across days, and remove them together.

My Watch History turns your watch data into something you can actually browse, understand, and manage — without digging through separate pages.

2. My Recently Visited: “What was that show again?”

This page exists because of a simple, very human problem:

You see an interesting show, click away, and then… it’s gone.

My Recently Visited remembers the Simkl pages you’ve been exploring, so you don’t have to.

What it tracks

Show, movie, and anime pages

Member profiles

Custom lists

Everything is shown in a timeline with time-of-day labels (morning/afternoon/night), so you can retrace your steps just like you remember them.

What you can do here

Filter by type
Switch between All, TV Shows, Anime, Movies, Members, and Custom Lists to quickly narrow down what you’re looking for.

Search from your history
Use the search bar to find something you visited recently without starting from scratch.

Quick-add to lists
See a show you were just looking at? Open it again and add it straight to Plan to Watch, Watching, or whatever list you use.

Privacy first: local-only history

Browsing history can feel sensitive, so we designed this page with a strict rule:

Your Recently Visited history is stored locally on your device, not on Simkl’s servers.

You’ll see a “Local — Private” label on the page as a reminder.
You can:

Clear a specific day

Clear everything with “Clear All”

If you switch browsers or devices, each one has its own separate local history.

3. My Ratings History & Rate Unrated: Your taste profile

Ratings are the backbone of recommendations, but they’re also a fun way to look at who you are as a viewer. This page brings all of that into one place.

All your ratings in one view

On My Ratings History you can:

See every rating you’ve given
Filter by type (TV, anime, movies) and year, or sort by date, score, and more.

Edit ratings and favorites quickly
Change your score, mark something as a favorite, or jump straight into editing your written review from the same list.

Dive into Rating Insights
— A dedicated insights panel shows:
— Total ratings this year
— Your average rating
— Your “rating personality” (how harsh or generous you tend to be)
— Most common rating
— Distribution of scores from 1–10
— Separate breakdown for TV vs movies
— A “controversial opinions” section, highlighting titles where you strongly disagreed with the crowd

It’s like looking in a mirror that only reflects your watch taste.

New: “Rate Unrated” — fix the gaps in your history

A lot of us have a backlog of stuff we watched but never rated. That’s why we added a special mode inside Ratings History called Rate Unrated.

When we detect that you have completed items with no rating, you’ll see:

A banner such as “You have 52 items unrated completed in 2025.”

A focused list of just those titles.

From there you can:

Hover and rate each item with 1–10 stars right in the list

Work through a bunch of them in a few seconds

Switch back to full ratings view at any time

This small feature has a big impact: better recommendations, richer stats, and a truer picture of what you actually like.

Try it on your own profile

All three pages are live now:

▶ My Watch History: https://simkl.com/my/history/watch-history/

👀 My Recently Visited: https://simkl.com/my/history/recently-visited/

⭐ My Ratings History & Rate Unrated: https://simkl.com/my/history/ratings/

We built My History to feel less like a raw data dump and more like a story: your story as a viewer — what you watch, what you chase down, and what you love (or hate) enough to rate.

Introducing My History: A New Home for Everything You Watched, Visited, or Rated on Simkl was originally published in Simkl TV Tracker Blog on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Have you ever marked a movie as watched, only to realize you logged it on the wrong day? Or maybe you imported your history from another service that did not have watch dates and the dates are all off? We know how important an accurate watch history is for tracking stats and memories, and it’s been one of our most requested features.

Well, we heard you! We’re thrilled to announce that you can now edit the watched date and time for all Movies and TV show episodes in your Simkl history.
https://medium.com/media/bc40dd10e2c984afd943784339e0303b/href
Perfect Your Movie Watch History

For any movie, you can now set the exact date and time you watched it. Just click the “I’ve seen this” button, and a new button with watch date and calendar option will appear where you can change the date. You can pick a specific date from the past, choose a quick option like “Yesterday” or “Last week,” or even use the original theatrical global or your country theatrical release, or Digital and DVD video release dates.

Don’t remember when you watched it? There’s an option to select a default “Very long time ago” as a “Don’t remember” date, so you can find it easily later in your V2 Beta Watchlist sorted by watched date.

Change Watch Date In Individual Episode

You can now easily change the watch date for individual episodes. Our partnership with JustWatch helps ensure the data is always current and reliable, giving you the best possible experience when deciding what to watch next.

New “My Subscriptions” Settings: Take Control of Your Subscriptions

In today’s streaming-dominated entertainment landscape, keeping track of multiple subscriptions can be challenging. How much are you actually spending across all platforms? When are your renewals due? Which subscriptions should you consider canceling? At Simkl, we understand these challenges, which is why we’re excited to introduce our latest feature: My Subscriptions.

Your Subscription Dashboard

Our new Streaming Services Settings provides a comprehensive dashboard for managing all your streaming subscriptions in one place. The feature is designed with simplicity and functionality in mind, giving you clear visibility into your streaming expenses while helping you make informed decisions about your entertainment budget.

Total Cost Tracking

The My Subscriptions dashboard prominently displays your total subscription costs, both monthly and yearly. This at-a-glance summary helps you understand exactly how much you’re investing in streaming entertainment. With the average household now subscribing to multiple services, these costs can add up quickly — our members are often surprised to discover they’re spending over $500–$1000 annually on streaming services alone!

Detailed Subscription Management

For each subscription, you can track:

Individual cost and billing frequency

Active status

Next renewal date

Special notes (plan details, sharing arrangements, etc.)

Planned cancellation dates

Cancellation Planning

One of the most useful features is the ability to schedule subscription cancellations. Simply select “I Need to Cancel Subscription” from the status dropdown, and you can set a future cancellation date. This is perfect for those who want to finish watching a specific series before canceling, or who want to enjoy a service for a specific time period.

Calendar Integration

Need a reminder before your subscription renews? With our Google Calendar and iCal integration options, you’ll never miss an important renewal date again. One click adds these important dates to your preferred calendar system.

Multi-Currency Support

For our global members, we’ve included multi-currency support, allowing you to track subscriptions in your local currency for each streaming service separately.

How to Use the New Feature

To get started with Streaming Services Settings:

Navigate to the Streaming Settings section of your Simkl account

Select the “My Subscriptions” tab

Click “Add New Subscription” to begin tracking your services

Enter the service details including cost, billing frequency, and renewal dates

Use the edit and delete functions to maintain your subscription list

The feature is fully customizable — you can add any streaming service available in your region, from major platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime to niche services that cater to specific interests.

Why We Built This Feature

At Simkl, we’re committed to enhancing your entertainment experience. We recognized that as the streaming landscape becomes increasingly fragmented, members need better tools to manage their subscriptions. Our My Subscriptions feature is a direct response to this need — designed to give you control and visibility over your entertainment spending.

The feature has been in beta testing with a select group of members who report saving an average of $10–15 monthly by identifying overlooked or underutilized subscriptions.

Start taking control of your streaming subscriptions today by visiting “My Subscriptions” in the Streaming Settings section of your Simkl account.

What’s Next?

We’ll be working on adding streaming filters to V2 Beta so you can filter out availability to stream based on your Watchlists, Discovery or on any Custom List.

We’re actively developing streaming filters for our V2 Beta, which will allow you to filter content availability based on your Watchlists, Discovery section, or any Custom List you’ve created. This will make it even easier to find where to watch the content that matters most to you.

Future Enhancements

Based on member feedback, we’re considering additional features such as:

Enhanced notification system for when your tracked shows become available on your favorite services

Price drop alerts for shows and movies on your watchlist

Additional customization options for filtering and sorting your streaming results

Expanded integration with more regional streaming services

Stay tuned for more updates — our mission is to keep improving Simkl so you can focus on enjoying the content you love. Who Bought Whom in the Battle for Your Screen!

The history of streaming services is a tale of innovation, mergers, and acquisitions that have shaped the digital landscape as we know it today. Let’s explore this dynamic history, year by year, focusing on key players and pivotal moments.

Let’s take a stroll down the lane of streaming service history, starting from the days of DVDs to the bustling digital streaming landscape of today. The evolution of streaming services is quite a tale, involving a series of strategic acquisitions and mergers that shaped the industry.

Rise of Blockbuster

1985: Blockbuster is founded by David Cook, revolutionizing the video rental industry. Its innovative store layouts and vast selection of movies made it a favorite among consumers.

1990s: Throughout the 1990s, Blockbuster dominates the video rental market. Its blue and yellow storefronts became iconic, and at its peak, the company boasts thousands of stores globally.

The Evolution of Media Consumption: DVDs to Digital

Late 1990s — Early 2000s

1997: Netflix was founded as a DVD rental service, revolutionizing how viewers consume movies and TV shows by offering a mail-order rental system.

1998: Blockbuster, a dominant force in the DVD rental business, continues to expand but fails to capitalize early on the shift towards digital.

Who started Netflix?

Netflix was started by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997. Initially, they founded the company as a DVD rental service that operated through mail, an innovative approach at the time that eventually evolved into a streaming giant. Marc Randolph served as the first CEO until 1999, after which Reed Hastings took over the role and has been a key figure in guiding Netflix into the streaming era.

Mid-2000s: Introduction of On-Demand and Early Streaming

2000: Blockbuster passes on the opportunity to purchase Netflix for $50 million, a decision that would later be regarded as one of the biggest missteps in media history.

2002: Blockbuster launches Blockbuster Online to compete with Netflix’s DVD rental service.

2004–2007: Blockbuster tries to compete with Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service by launching Blockbuster Online. While initially successful, it fails to capture the same level of market enthusiasm as Netflix.

2004: Walmart started a DVD rental service, though it eventually sold this part of its business to Netflix in 2005.

The Dawn of Streaming

The 2000s marked the beginning of a new era in media consumption, characterized by the gradual shift from traditional broadcast and physical media formats to digital streaming technologies. Here’s a more detailed look at how streaming services began to emerge and evolve during this foundational period:

Early Streaming Technology and Infrastructure Developments
The ascent of streaming platforms was underpinned by pivotal advances in technology, notably data compression techniques and enhanced broadband infrastructure. The introduction of codecs like H.264 allowed for efficient, high-quality video streaming, which, when paired with increased broadband adoption, made streaming a feasible alternative to traditional media consumption methods.

Impact on Traditional Media and Advertising:

Streaming services have significantly disrupted traditional media, particularly impacting cable and broadcast television. As subscriptions to streaming platforms surged, cable providers saw a steep decline in user numbers, forcing a reevaluation of content delivery and advertising models. Advertisers, in turn, have shifted focus towards digital ads tailored to the personal viewing habits of online audiences.

Consumer Behavior and Market Trends:

The evolution of streaming has markedly changed consumer behavior. Viewers now prefer the control and convenience of on-demand content, leading to the popularization of binge-watching. This shift has necessitated adaptations in content creation and release strategies, with many services now dropping entire seasons at once to capitalize on this trend.

Regulatory and Legal Challenges:

As streaming services proliferate, they face an array of regulatory and legal hurdles, from copyright issues and licensing disputes to navigating the complex web of global media regulations. These challenges have prompted streaming giants to invest heavily in legal defenses and lobbying for more favorable laws, reflecting the growing influence of these platforms in the entertainment industry.

Economic Impact and Industry Revenue:

The streaming industry has not only transformed how content is consumed but also how it is monetized. The shift from ad-based revenue to subscription models has led to massive revenue streams for streaming services. This transformation is reshaping the financial landscape of the media industry, prompting traditional media companies to innovate or collaborate to stay competitive.

Global Expansion and Localization Strategies:

Major streaming services have expanded globally by adopting localization strategies. This includes producing local content that resonates with regional audiences, offering multilingual support, and customizing marketing strategies to different cultures. Such efforts have helped streaming giants tap into lucrative international markets and grow their subscriber bases exponentially.

Technological Innovations by Streaming Companies:

Streaming companies continue to lead with groundbreaking technological innovations such as personalized content recommendations powered by AI and the introduction of 4K and HDR streaming. These advancements enhance viewer engagement and satisfaction, setting new standards for content delivery and consumption in the digital age.

Competitive Dynamics and Future Projections:

The streaming market remains highly competitive, with platforms continually strategizing to outdo rivals through exclusive content, strategic partnerships, and technological advancements. Future trends likely include the integration of augmented and virtual reality experiences into streaming services, promising to further revolutionize how audiences engage with digital content.

2005: The Birth of YouTube — Revolutionizing Video Sharing Worldwide

2005: YouTube is launched, initially designed for users to share video clips. It quickly becomes the go-to platform for video sharing.

YouTube’s journey as a streaming behemoth began in a modest office garage, when three former PayPal employees — Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim — launched the platform as a simple video-sharing website. It was initially conceptualized as a place where people could upload and share personal video clips, but it quickly transcended that purpose, blossoming into a global platform that democratized video content creation and consumption.

2006: Google acquires YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock. This acquisition was pivotal as it marked a significant moment in the evolution of video streaming, with YouTube growing into the dominant platform for online video content.

The Early Days and Rapid Growth

YouTube’s growth trajectory skyrocketed almost immediately. Its intuitive interface allowed users to easily upload, view, and share videos. The platform’s first viral moments, like the infamous “Charlie bit my finger” video, showcased its potential to distribute content at unprecedented speed and scale. By November 2006, Google recognized YouTube’s potential and acquired it for $1.65 billion in stock, a move that integrated the platform with Google’s expansive technological resources and advertising prowess.

Evolving into a Media Powerhouse

Over the years, YouTube has evolved from a repository of amateur videos to a comprehensive media platform. It has nurtured an entirely new breed of celebrities and content creators, from gamers and musicians to do-it-yourself educators, who have harnessed YouTube’s reach to build substantial audiences and livelihoods. The introduction of the YouTube Partner Program allowed creators to earn revenue from their videos through ads, incentivizing higher-quality content and fostering a new form of media entrepreneurship.

Technological Innovations and Expansions

YouTube has consistently been at the forefront of technological innovation in streaming. It was one of the first platforms to introduce high-definition video, and it later pioneered 360-degree video streaming and virtual reality experiences. YouTube’s live streaming capabilities have transformed events, allowing millions of people worldwide to participate in live concerts, speeches, and even space launches in real time.

YouTube’s Role in the Streaming Wars

As the landscape of digital streaming became more competitive with the rise of subscription services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+, YouTube solidified its position by launching YouTube Premium and YouTube TV. These services offer ad-free viewing, original content, and live television, respectively, catering to the diverse needs of its global audience. YouTube’s ability to blend user-generated content with professional productions and traditional TV shows positions it uniquely within the streaming wars, bridging the gap between old media and new.

Today, YouTube stands as a cornerstone of the digital era’s entertainment, constantly adapting to user demands and technological advancements. Its impact on culture, media, and individual creativity remains profound, making it a critical player in the ongoing evolution of how we consume media.

Broadband Expansion and the Rise of Streaming Platforms

Late 2000s

2006: Amazon launches Amazon Unbox in the United States, marking its initial foray into the video on demand service. This platform allows users to buy or rent television shows and movies on their computers and portable devices.

2007: Netflix introduces streaming. Originally a DVD rental service, it launched its streaming service, changing how people consume movies and TV shows. This marks a significant shift from physical rentals to digital streaming.

2008: Hulu is launched, initially offering next-day streaming of network TV shows along with a selection of movies.

2008–2009: Plex foundation and Early Years. Plex initially began as a hobby project in 2008 when developer Elan Feingold teamed up with Scott Olechowski and Cayce Ullman. The project was a fork of the popular open-source media center XBMC (now known as Kodi), aimed at creating a media solution that could organize and stream media content across various devices within a home network.

2010: Launch of Plex Media Server. The official launch of Plex Media Server marked a significant development in Plex’s history. This software allowed users to host their own digital media, such as movies, TV shows, and music, and stream it to any Plex client app across devices like smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs. This server-client model helped Plex gain a strong following among tech enthusiasts.

Twitch: From Concept to Streaming Juggernaut

This platform has a unique history that intertwines with the evolution of live streaming, especially in the gaming community.

2007: The story of Twitch begins with Justin.tv, a general-purpose live streaming service. It was co-founded by Justin Kan and Emmett Shear, among others, and initially featured a variety of streaming categories, but it quickly became evident that gaming content was especially popular.

Decline of Blockbuster

2008–2009: As the market shifts towards digital streaming, Blockbuster struggles to keep up. It launches Blockbuster On Demand and Blockbuster@Home, but these efforts are too late to significantly turn the tide against rising competitors like Netflix, Hulu, and later, Amazon Prime Video.

2010: Blockbuster files for bankruptcy, burdened by significant debt and an inability to adapt quickly to a digital model. While other companies had begun investing heavily in streaming technology, Blockbuster had invested in maintaining its physical stores.

2011: Amazon introduces Amazon Prime Video, originally called Amazon Instant Video as part of its Prime subscription, initially featuring movies and TV shows without additional cost to Prime subscribers. This inclusion in the Prime membership makes it a unique and value-added proposition for subscribers.

2011: Dish Network acquires Blockbuster at auction for approximately $320 million, aiming to incorporate Blockbuster’s brand and remaining assets into its own digital offerings.

Under Dish Network’s ownership, Blockbuster tries several strategies to revive the brand, including launching a new streaming service and mail DVD service, but these efforts face stiff competition.

2013: The last 300 company-owned Blockbuster stores are announced to be closed, and the DVD-by-mail service is shut down, effectively ending Blockbuster’s role as a physical rental business.

2014 and beyond: A few independently owned Blockbuster franchises remain, mainly serving as nostalgia-driven attractions rather than as viable video rental outlets. The most famous of these is in Bend, Oregon, often dubbed the “last Blockbuster.”

Blockbuster’s story is often cited as a cautionary tale about the importance of adapting to technological changes and consumer trends. Its decline is not just about the rise of digital media but also about strategic decisions that failed to foresee the lasting impact of the internet on the video rental industry.

2009: Comcast announces its intention to acquire a majority stake in NBC Universal from General Electric. This deal, completed in 2011, was significant because it combined Comcast’s cable operations with NBC Universal’s content production, creating a powerhouse in both content creation and distribution.

2011: Recognizing the growing demand for a dedicated gaming platform, the team behind Justin.tv launched TwitchTV as a spin-off focused specifically on video game live streaming. The name “Twitch” comes from “twitch gameplay,” referring to the type of video game that tests a player’s reaction time.

2012–2013: Twitch’s popularity explodes, particularly among gamers. It becomes the go-to platform for eSports tournaments, personal streams of individual players, and gaming-related talk shows.

2013: Netflix begins producing its own original content with “House of Cards,” setting a precedent for streaming platforms as content creators.

2014: Amazon acquires the UK-based streaming and DVD-by-mail service Lovefilm, which it merges into its Prime Video service to strengthen its presence in Europe.

2014: Amazon acquires Twitch, a live streaming platform for gamers, for approximately $970 million. This acquisition diversifies Amazon’s streaming offerings. This acquisition is pivotal, as it allows Twitch to leverage Amazon’s resources while ensuring its continued growth and dominance in the live streaming space.

2015 and beyond: Post-acquisition, Twitch expands beyond gaming. It introduces Twitch Creative, where artists showcase their creative processes, and IRL (In Real Life) streams, which capture everyday activities and mark Twitch’s evolution into a broader platform.

2014: Simkl announces a new media tracking service

May 12, 2014: Simkl is pivoting from its B2C and Enterprise Instant Messenger recorder services (similar to Slack but for all chat and voice recording with web archive originating on Skype and other messengers) and Announces a Kickstarter Campaign to Crowdfund New Television, Anime, and Movie Tracking Software called Simkl TV Tracker.

Simkl is a digital service that specializes in tracking and organizing personal media consumption across various streaming platforms, TV shows, anime, and movies. It offers users a comprehensive way to keep track of what they watch, helping them manage their viewing history and discover new content based on their preferences.

Simkl was founded with the goal of creating a universal tracking tool for media consumers. The service originally started as an instant messaging chat history backup tool in 2007, but shifted focus to media tracking due to the evolving needs of digital audiences and the expansion of streaming content.

Over the years, Simkl developed its core functionality to include support for tracking TV shows, movies, and anime. This was a response to the fragmentation in the streaming services market, where users subscribed to multiple platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video and needed a centralized way to manage their viewing habits.

One of Simkl’s key features is its ability to integrate with various streaming platforms. By syncing with user accounts on services like Netflix, it can automatically track watched episodes and adjust the user’s watchlist and recommendations accordingly.

Simkl’s role in the streaming ecosystem is vital for many dedicated viewers who seek to make sense of their viewing habits while exploring a vast array of content across different platforms. It bridges the gap between numerous streaming services and the user’s desire for a cohesive viewing experience.

2015: HBO launches HBO NOW, its standalone streaming service, allowing access without a cable subscription.

Mar 3, 2015: Simkl TV Tracker is open for beta users.

2016: Amazon Prime Video becomes available worldwide except for Mainland China, Iran, North Korea, and Syria, solidifying its status as a global streaming service.

2017: Amazon channels are introduced, allowing Prime members to subscribe to other streaming services like HBO, Showtime, and Starz through Amazon’s platform.

2017: Plex Expansion into News and Live TV. Plex made a significant pivot by acquiring Watchup, a streaming news service, which led to the integration of personalized news into the Plex service. This year also saw the introduction of live TV and DVR support, allowing users to watch and record over-the-air broadcasts directly within the Plex ecosystem.

2018: Twitch continues to innovate by launching Twitch Sings, an interactive karaoke game designed to be streamed. Here’s a glimpse into some potential future developments that could reshape how we consume entertainment:

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Personalization:

Smarter Recommendations: AI algorithms will become even more sophisticated, curating content suggestions that are hyper-personalized to each viewer’s tastes. Imagine recommendations that not only consider your watch history but also your mood, time of day, and even what you’ve been watching on other platforms.

Interactive Storytelling: AI could be used to create interactive narratives, where viewers can influence the plot or character development of a show. Imagine a choose-your-own-adventure style experience for your favorite series.

Personalized Pricing: AI could analyze viewing habits and tailor subscription plans to individual needs. This could lead to more flexible pricing structures, with options for viewers who only watch certain genres or content types.

2. Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) Integration:

Immersive Experiences: Imagine watching a concert from the front row or exploring a fantastical world alongside your favorite characters. VR and AR could create truly immersive viewing experiences that blur the lines between reality and entertainment.

Interactive Content: VR and AR could allow viewers to interact with the content they’re watching. Imagine exploring a virtual museum exhibit or participating in a virtual reality game show.

Challenges and Limitations: Technical hurdles like hardware accessibility and bandwidth requirements will need to be addressed for VR and AR to become mainstream in streaming as well as different content licensing wars between VR hardware developers. Netflix famously did not include the Netflix App in a new Apple’s Vision Pro.

3. Cloud Gaming Integration:

Seamless Gaming Experience: Streaming services could integrate with cloud gaming platforms, allowing users to play high-end games without needing powerful consoles or PCs. This could make gaming more accessible to a wider audience.

Interactive Game Streaming: Twitch and other live streaming platforms could leverage cloud gaming to create more interactive experiences for viewers. Imagine watching a streamer play a game and then being able to jump in and play alongside them.

Technical Challenges: Latency (delay) and internet connection speeds could pose challenges for a seamless cloud gaming experience within streaming services.

4. Focus on Niche Content and International Expansion:

Catering to Specific Interests: Streaming services might cater to niche interests by offering specialized content libraries focused on specific genres, hobbies, or demographics. This could lead to a more diverse and fragmented streaming landscape.

International Expansion: Streaming services will continue to expand globally, offering localized content and catering to regional tastes. This could lead to increased competition and a wider variety of content for viewers worldwide.

Challenges of Localization: Dubbing, subtitles, and cultural sensitivities will be crucial considerations for streaming services as they expand into new markets.

5. The Rise of Ad-Supported Streaming:

Freemium Model: With subscription fatigue potentially setting in, ad-supported streaming could become a more prominent model. This would offer free content with ad breaks, similar to traditional television.

Targeted Advertising: Advancements in advertising technology could lead to more targeted ads that are relevant to viewers’ interests and viewing habits. This could make ad breaks less intrusive and more engaging.

Balancing Content and Ads: Finding the right balance between content and advertising will be crucial for ad-supported streaming services to succeed. Too many ads could drive viewers away.

These are just a few potential future trends that could shape the streaming industry. As technology continues to evolve and consumer preferences change, the way we watch our favorite shows and movies will undoubtedly continue to transform. It will be interesting to see how streaming services adapt and innovate to meet the demands of the future.

Simkl’s Role in Enhancing Streaming Experience

Simkl (https://simkl.com) offers a comprehensive tracking solution for TV shows, movies, and anime across all streaming platforms. Building upon our beloved Simkl V2 Beta, Custom Lists provide an even more personalized way to organize, share, and discover content.

Simkl now has Watchlists and Custom lists https://simkl.com/lists/.

Watchlists and Custom lists are both essential features of Simkl that help members organize their TV shows, movies, and anime. That means that to be able to create new custom lists right now, you’ll need access to V2 Beta as well, so we’re opening up V2 Beta to more members. PRO Members now have full access to V2 Beta! Don’t worry, you can still read and follow other members' custom lists if you’re on a free plan.

Auto Lists

Custom Auto Lists on Simkl

Simkl provides a feature called Auto Lists that automates the process of creating custom lists.

With traditional list-making, you need to manually search for a show or movie and then add it one by one to your custom list. This can be a tedious process, especially when dealing with large quantities of media.

What are Auto Lists?

Auto Lists, on the other hand, are designed to simplify and automate this process. Rather than adding each item manually, you can create an Auto List using filters that can automatically curate and manage a list for you. This is ideal for members who want to create themed lists, genre-specific lists, or even lists based on certain ratings, actors, or directors (available in V2 later, when Actor’s data is added to Simkl).

Here’s how it works:

You define the criteria for your Auto List using filters. These filters could be based on a variety of parameters such as genre, release year, ratings, actors, directors, and more.

Once you set your filters, Simkl will scan all available shows and movies and add the ones that meet your criteria to your Auto List.

The Auto List is dynamic. This means it will automatically update whenever a new show or movie that fits your criteria is added to Simkl’s database. So you don’t have to worry about constantly updating your list with new additions.

In short, Auto Lists on Simkl can help you create and manage personalized lists with much greater ease and efficiency.

Few examples of how you can use Auto Lists:

Filter by MCU tag to get a list of all Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies.

Filter by Korean Language and Netflix Network to get a list of all Korean original shows on Netflix.

Filter by the number of IMDB votes and minimum Movie budget that are released on DVD.

Collections

Lists can be grouped into collections using their Title.

How can you insert buttons in a list that link to other lists within a collection?

When you add 2 or more lists with the same title, you can organize them and automatically link to each other by adding (Button Name) at the end of the list with the same title.

Some examples:

Star Wars Franchise (TV Shows)

Star Wars Franchise (Movies)

Will create the following buttons inside each list that link to each other:

Some examples of how you can use titles as collections:

Movies I watched this year (2021)

Movies I watched this year (2022)

Movies I watched this year (2023)

My favorite TV shows (Horror)

My favorite TV shows (Sci-fi)

All of my 10 stars Ranked (TV Shows)

All of my 10 stars Ranked (Anime)

All of my 10 stars Ranked (Movies)

Decade Ranked (2020s)

Decade Ranked (2010s)

Decade Ranked (2000s)

Decade Ranked (1990s)

Decade Ranked (1980s)

Decade Ranked (1970s)

Decade Ranked (1960s)

Decade Ranked (1950s)

Top 10 movies of (2023)

Top 10 movies of (2022)

Top 10 movies of (2021)

Star Wars movies (Ranked)

Star Wars movies (Watch order)

Get Started Today!
