How to interpret insurance company financial ratings

Vitalsigns says that “ratings have become one of the most important pieces of information about an insurance company. They provide a reference to judge the financial health of a company, and a way to compare one company to another.” One problem is that insurers don’t use a universal ratings scale. Also the same letter rating can be used by two different rating agencies, but have different meanings. Vitalsigns says that a better way to interpret this data is to look at the percentiles that the ratings represent. Vitalsigns then calculates a composite index, the Comdex, which is the average percentile of a company’s ratings. It is a composite of all the ratings an insurer receives, on a 1 to 100 scale, in relation to other companies that have been rated by the financial rating services.
