Digital Heaven has released DH_GridX and DH_WideSafeX, two new freeware plug-in generators for Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5.

DH_GridX creates a grid of up to 30 horizontal and vertical divisions which can be independently set. As any designer will say, grids are a useful tool to assist in the setting up of consistent graphical elements and are not usually seen in the final project. The grid may be drawn over the entire frame or a custom defined area with line color and width also adjustable.

DH_WideSafeX provides 4:3, 14:9 and 16:9 action and title safe areas in 16:9 aspect ratio projects with support for standard definition NTSC/PAL, high definition 720/1080, 2K and 4K. While Final Cut Pro X can display traditional safe areas these do not show markings for 16:9 projects reformatted to 4:3 and 14:9 versions – a feature critical for broadcast output. DH_WideSafeX is compliant with BBC/EBU safe area specifications.

DH_GridX and DH_WideSafeX are free and available for download after registration at the Digital Heaven website. DH_WideSafe for Final Cut Pro 4-7 is also now a free plug-in (previously US$29.00).

Steppy Edges

Adam Wilt is the man who knows everything about the DV format and he has two plug-ins:
One smoothes the "steppy edges" resulting from DV's 4:1:1 chroma subsampling (Adam thinks FCP4's subsampling filters generally do a better job but if you are using an earlier version of FCP...)
The other filter repositions the chroma of an image - using one-pixel steps - relative to the luma.
I'll leave it to Adam to explain where & how these filters can best be used. HINT: exporting stills and chromakey.
