The equinox came and so did the snow storms with many days offering both falling snow and frozen rain. Bonus is that we are good for water, which is important in a dry state. </span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Then there were the world wide tragedies and close to home tragedies. Sickness, death, sadness and stress. The end of winter has certainly taken it’s toll, not just on me personally but on many family members and people across the globe. The first half of 2011 has been challenging so far. </span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">I thank that is why hearing the birds sing this morning was such a gift. The sun is shining, the weather is temperate, flowers are now starting to bloom and you can hear the sound of children’s laughter as they play outside. I’ve been busy, as usual and over scheduling myself as I often do. I really need to get back on track and am on the look out for free tools that will keep art, writing, editing, family and work all organized in one place. It’s a bit of a challenge and is often why I ended putting more things to do on my list than can actually be done in one day.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">There are things that need to be done every day and then there are the things that I want to be done everyday. My issue comes by trying to put it all in one day. I know logically that I’m just one person and I cannot do it all...but dang it, if I don’t try anyway :P</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">So, I think that I will start with a late resolution and go with getting organized but no being over scheduled. I’m good and sewing by hand, though it takes quite some time to do. Terry got me a refabbed Project Runway Edition Brother sewing machine and it is awesome. It’s easy to use and maintain, it has a ton of great stitches and has been a big help with making our youngest daughters quilt. Her quilt is still unfinished as I need to get more thread and ribbon but the machine is awesome none the less :P</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">That being said, the last time I made anything from a sewing pattern was back in HomeEc class. Yet our oldest daughter has faith in me and has gotten a pattern for a Jessica McClintoock full on gown that she wants me to make and adjust in time for the Naval Ball...in a few months. I am fully freaked out.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Reading patterns for me comes across as harder than reading a map...but I need to figure it out. Thankfully, she has some a-line gowns that I can rip up. This time around the challenge is to go to a thrift store, spend no more than $20 on something that is the ugliest thing you can find and then remake it into something awesome.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">I want to do this challenge but I haven’t even made it to the thrift store yet. The last possible due date to have the project submitted is February 8th. My plan is to go out over the weekend and see what ugly I can find that will inspire me to remake it.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">I’ve remade or repurposed a lot of things around the house but haven’t purposely gone out and bought something with the intention of remaking it. One day I write and edit, the next day I focus on art and on all days I have the house, cooking cleaning and keeping up with the family. I don’t like the new profile and am on the look out for a better managed and more user friendly social network without all the added games and apps. I know a lot of people enjoy the games and that’s great but I just don’t have time to hang out on Facebook and play games who try to get me to buy credits or points or upgrades or whatnot. If I’m going to pay for a game it’s going be a good one like Minecraft or Sims.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">The following are some samples of the art that went live today on Etsy. Plus we are looking at a partly cloudy day, so this could be a good chance to get outside take a walk and even open up the house a bit this afternoon to get that fresh air circulating.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">I enjoy walking through the neighborhood that we live in because just a few blocks away is the old Victorian section of houses with trees and great looking yards. I have to say though that now all the trees are bare but in the fall here, despite being in the desert state there are some great  established old trees that just decorate the whole area with falling leaves and I love that. :)</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Plus I love that there is still a sense of community in an expanding town. I’m not a big town type person. I’ve never been a fan of crowded streets, concrete as the main color scheme and living in an area so large that there is no sense of community at all. I like to know who my neighbors are and I like homes that are different that have yards instead of the mass cookie cutter neighborhoods where the house are all beige and everyone’s yard looks the same because of a homeowners association. </span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">I like community events and supporting small, local business owners. I like the one-on-one sense you get of living in a smaller area that just doesn’t happen in a large city. I like yards and business that look different, that have an animal running around and that have that sense of it being personal...meaning that the owners are sharing themselves with the customer and not an empty isle after isle feel under bright lights. </span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Maybe, I’m old fashioned...I don’t know. Already it is New Year's Eve and in a few days the winter break will be over. Time to get back to the regular schedule, getting up early and not staying up so late at night.</p> <p>I wanted to share a few things that have been done art wise here over the past few days. This first piece is a special commissioned card of Thumper for personal use. The piece was drawn freehand in graphite and finished offe with colored pencil and my handy sharpies. I wanted to use the vibrant red of Valentine's Day with some Art Nouveau inspired styling to it. This piece was started with graphite and is mainly filled in with colored pencil, highlighted only at this time with a black fine point sharpie. Her blog is no longer available online, which is a shame because it was awesome but some of her recipes live on.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Every Yule/Christmas holiday season I focus on one main cookie type. Normally, I only do snicker-doodles but the last couple of years I wanted to add sugar cookies in there and spent a lot of time trying to work on the best sugar cookie recipe. One of the differences that made Andrea’s recipe so interesting is in the maple glaze that she topped the cookies with to hold the bacon topper on. I did modify the recipe somewhat because we live in a high altitude area and I wanted a lighter tasting glaze on the cookie. The time of year where we gear up for the sosltice dinner tomorrow followed by Christmas this up coming weekend. I’ve already been working on some hand drawn cards where my goal is to go beyond the “cookie cutter” look of the winter holiday cards. With the Valentine’s Day cards I get the blessing of more time to construct the design and work on the detailing.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">In the few cards that I have done...I have to say that in all honesty they are better than the winter holiday ones where I worked to get simple starter packs done in a short amount of time. The love cards though won’t be in packs or card sets so I have more of an opportunity to work on each cards individual style. She deconstructed an old jacket and sewed the entire piece that you see here. The trimming was taken from one of her old shirts and after three tries with different velcro, she has a dog jacket that is water proof. Had to charge the camera and get some other work done first. The status with the quilt now is still at the trimming stage and I’m not at the making a “quilt sandwich” stage yet. Need to pick up some more thread, more ribbon, pick a fabric for the backing and get some more batting. I am hoping to finish it off before the holiday.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">In another adventure with the new machine, our oldest daughter created a doggie jacket made from recycling an old jacket. The jacket turned out really well and I’m hoping to get some photos up of that as well.</span><p /><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">All in all with the holiday fast approaching, it is now rush time for the quilt.
