I am totally surprised how many different stores in different countries sell exactly the same items on Etsy, this is handmade? or now we can buy in factories and resell? just a question….

… and some of these stores even share the same pictures!!! too lazy to design their own products and too lazy to take their own pictures.

In the other hand I am super happy there are still real handmade items on etsy, next time you are planning on purchase on etsy just do a little research , don't go with the cheaper items, they can look good in the pictures but when you receive them is totally a different story. items that are from big factories usually are cheaper and poorly made.

read the reviews! if the store don't show their location is weird, if they don't customize an item for you is also suspicious don't you think?

I just think is totally unfair how Etsy allows people to do this, selling products that are not handmade.

I believe a key part of growing any business in the handmade community is not only about gaining the support of fellow handmade artists, but convincing regular consumers that buying handmade is a smart, viable choice for their hard-earned dollars.

Certainly handmade is the better way, and I’m not sure many people can argue with that. Look at all the ways it’s better:

1. You support local designer and artisans, and therefore their local economy and community. Supporting local business has a huge list of benefits all to itself, far too many to list here, but it’s a good thing, trust me.

2. You get high-quality items that are built to last, not all the stuff that has the “How cheap can I produce this?” mentality. It’ll probably fall apart in a year or two, but handmade items have longevity. Artisans have pride in their work, and want it to last. Even the materials are hand-picked by an individual, and what big manufacturing company can say that?

3. Your gifts are the best on the block. Cool, trendy, unique, and usually one-of-a kind, you can find some really awesome handmade stuff that’ll make everyone ask “Where can I get one?”

4. Customization! Since each and every item is made by hand, and you are usually talking directly to the person making it, you can tweak the color or size of something you are interested in, or even get a fully commissioned custom order done. This avoids you having the excuse of “it was all the store had left.” Want a cool case for your new gadget, but maybe you have some weird size the store doesn’t offer? Get is custom made to your exact dimensions! Doggie sweaters from the store never quite fit your beloved pooch? Customization to the rescue! The possibilities are endless really.

5. You’re helping the environment. It’s always a nice feeling to ‘go green’ isn’t it? Handmade items aren’t made in a waste-producing factory and shipped halfway around the world using fuel and energy. Buying handmade (especially really locally) can greatly reduce your carbon footprint on the world.

6. You gain a unique connection with an artisan. You can be in direct contact with the person who made the item with their own hands. For some reason this is just really cool. I mean, think about how awesome it’d be to meet your favorite clothing designer, artist, author, or chef. It’s kinda like that feeling, but on a much smaller and more intimate scale.

7. Let’s not forget the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you helped support someone very directly. For example, when you purchase something from my shop, you just helped put food on the table for another meal (and I thank you deeply for that). You don’t have to pay the shop’s cashier and the various levels of management and the supplier and the designer and the manufacturer, because just one person is all those things!

8. Avoid crowded stores. How annoying is it to maneuver yourself (and your cart, and possibly kids) through packed store aisles only to fight with someone for the last thing on the shelf then wait in a line for hours with a cart full of stuff and realize you still need to get something for your mother-in-law or coworker or neighbor? Talk about stressful. Buy handmade items at local craft fairs, markets, and boutiques, or shop online to avoid people altogether.

9. Get it gift wrapped. This may not apply to all handmade goods, but a large number of sellers do offer a gift wrapping service (sometimes even free). Even if it’s not free, the few dollars it costs you may be well worth it, especially if you can’t find the gift wrap you bought last year so you have to go out to another crowded store to buy more, then find a free afternoon to clear space on the crowded dining room table for all the wrapping paper, tape, scissors, gift bags, tissue paper, and gifts. Save time and energy!

10. Get it all done at once. Find a large craft show in your area and get all that holiday shopping done at once. Craft shows usually offer a much wider range of goods than your typical store, so you don’t need to run to a bunch of different places to get everything you need. This is even easier if you shop online. Online marketplaces have goods from thousands of handmade artists all over the country, and from around the world, so you’ll have no excuse not to find that perfect gift for everyone on your list.

What can be easier? And if you start to protest that maybe you are more into the high-tech gadget-y stuff, no problem, but you’ll probably need a case to protect that new expensive item, so consider a handmade one before you run to the store. And if you object that handmade is so expensive, then I refer you back to the reasons why handmade is better. You have to pay for quality my friends, and be smart shoppers.

I encourage each and every one of you to buy more handmade this year and every year, not just for the holidays but for all special occasions, or maybe just because you want a new throw pillow for the couch or a beautiful new necklace for yourself. The sky is the limit!

If at the word concrete you think drab grey slabs and 70s architecture, you are in for a surprise...

I was looking for information about custom concrete countertops and I found beautiful ideas that I wanted share here, let me know if you like them.

A 1.5" concrete countertop weighs approximately 19 lbs. per square foot. As a comparison, granite is approximately 18 lbs. per square foot.

Google's Project Glass

After a few months of speculation, Google revealed some information about the project that will make Google Goggles and other mobile apps more useful. Instead of using a smartphone to find information about an object, translate a text, get directions, compare prices, you can use some smart glasses that augment the reality and help you understand more about that things around you.

The prototype version Google showed off on Wednesday looked like a very polished and well-designed pair of wrap-around glasses with a clear display that sits above the eye. The glasses can stream information to the lenses and allow the wearer to send and receive messages through voice commands. There is also a built-in camera to record video and take pictures.

The glasses are not yet for sale. Google will, however, be testing them in public.

People who want to live green have a wide array of choices available to them today that did not exist just a few years ago. From cleaning products to clothing, garbage bags to groceries, toothpaste to toys - and beyond, there is an exploding number of products that are both good for us and good for the environment.

"This is a very good thing".

In this clip, Dianna Cohen was trying to persuade the audience that they should adopt a fourth "R" to go along with the old "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle", which is REFUSE. Her main point is to get people to avoid buying products that are packaged in plastic, so we can help cut down the plastic waste that the packages produce, which is heavily damaging our eco system. She also said, "In the United States, less than 7% of our plastics are being recycled." It is indeed a humongous waste of resource if we keep discarding plastic packaging, but instead we should use more recycled and renewable materials.

Fun and flirty, dramatic and sexy… stripes are proven to be one of the most known patterns used in decorating our homes and textiles throughout the ages. Pattern breathes life and character into the surfaces that they cover. Regardless of how we wear them or place them in our homes, stripes and all patterns alike are essential in the world of decor and self expression.

Horizontal stripes give a room a more modern feel, and vertical stripes are a bit more traditional. Stripes can make such a style statement in any space and all you need is one or two gallons of paint (and a little time). Here are some of my favorite vertical striped rooms.

Stripes look great everywhere and just a little can go a long way. Using striped drapes or curtains can give you the same lengthening effect as vertical wall painted stripes. Want to go even smaller scale? Use the pattern on a chair, pillow, or bed linens. Stripes are classic and will never go out of style so you really can’t go wrong.

Mixing stripes and patterns: Some people think that stripes and patterns shouldn't be mixed. Believe it or not, if you use the same colors throughout your space, you can mix and match stripes and patterns beautifully. If you have bold stripes on the wall, opt for smaller print textiles and furnishing coverings. For more subtle stripes, pair these with bolder and bigger print. You will be surprised by the beautiful pairings.
Bold stripes add drama: If you are trying to add a powerful presence to your space, wide bold stripes are for you. Depending on what color combination you like to use, stripes can be contrasting in color, or pick colors in the same hue to create a softer appeal, but still draw attention. Choose contrasting colors like black and white, or light and dark colors to command visual eye interest.

Subtle stripes can be gorgeous: If you like stripes but prefer a lighter side, choose colors that are pastels, or use tone on tone color varieties of one color. For an easy do it yourself project, paint an entire wall in your favorite color, wait a day for the paint to completely dry. Come back and tape off stripes and paint using a glaze or Faux finish paint that will lighten the underlying color. Once you remove the tape, you will be left with subtle stripes that aren't overbearing!

I love stenciling. It’s versatile and appropriate to any design style. Plus it’s easy and anyone can accomplish it successfully. Paisley Wallpaper has created a fabulous stenciled floor and even shares her pattern.

this incredible diy project makes my jaw drop every time i see it. the talented britt of cucumbersome created these seriously fantastic tables after seeing the curator table at anthropologie. inspired by angie’s diy faux-nelson jewelry chest on d*s, britt decided to create her own, more affordable (and dare i say, more beautiful?), version of the table for much, much less. using components from ikea and home depot, britt created these gorgeous tables for $96 each, a far cry from the $698 price tag on the anthropologie version. i just love britt’s initiative to create something with her own two hands that, in my opinion, came out looking just as good- if not better- than the inspiration piece.

Want to get the look of a sunburst mirror without spending a lot? Get this style on the cheap with inexpensive wood shims from the hardware store, floral rings, and a small convex mirror to create your own starburst convex mirror.

You can create this wooden dock for your iPad in only half an hour. You just need to have a piece of wood, a saw and a chisel to produce this cool functional dock. The maximum cost of the wooden dock is below $5. What you need to do is to make an opening in one end of the timber that should fit in the edge of your iPad. The brains behind this dock comes from three designers - Simon Blazer, Martijn Aslander and David Rudolph.
