I've been a (very) bad blogger of late. So bad, in fact, that I've actually pondered stepping away from this space in a more formal way for a while. But every time I'm ready to pull the trigger, farewell post composed in my mind, I chicken out. Blog, I just can't quit you. Sure I'm unreliable and half-assed, but I'm still here. And that's what I'm going with for now...

So no excuses, no long-winded laments about the things that have kept me from this space... Instead let's just go with some lovely things, shall we?

First there's the fun fact that the top of my television cabinet in the den is looking an awful lot like a corner of the Chloé showroom. Oh groovy, wonky, drippy pottery. My love for you knows no bounds.

I'm also smitten with Appointed's canvas notebooks. In fact, Suann's just killed it with the entire Appointed enterprise. She's making the Chicest. Work. Supplies. Ever. The whole thing is just total and complete perfection.

Another obsession: the shoulder baring frocks that went down the runway at Litkovskaya Tbilisi and Nino Babukhadia. I somehow feel like this is an age-appropriate, smart girl way to do sexy, yes?

And while we're talking perfection, there's the matter of this bedroom situation at Swedish hotel Ett Hem via the genius Ilse Crawford. (Really the entire hotel is just crazy gorgeous.)

And because I'm all about coming full circle, how about we close out this bad boy where we started with some pottery action. Feeling like one of these Clam Lab beauties needs to join the television cabinet line up. Just sayin'.

Recent Work (And The Totally Disconcerting Warp-Speed Passing of Time)

I know it's not especially compelling or interesting to talk about how quickly time goes by. In fact, on the scintillating conversation scale, I would put it up there with chatting about the weather, traffic, and how busy you are... (All three of which I regularly discuss, clearly it's time to up my conversation game.)

But banality of subject matter notwithstanding, I'm going there. Friends, time is flying by. Zooming, racing, in full turbo mode.

Part of this, I suppose, is due to being heads down on a slew of branding and interiors projects at the studio (i.e. the action happening in those images above). There's nothing like an abundance of interesting, compelling, creative work to make you look up from your computer and wonder how the hell it's already the end of the day.

But I think the bigger "time warper" is how quickly my girlies are turning into young women. I feel like yesterday we were reading board books and watching Yo Gabba Gabba and now we're dealing with leg shaving and what have you (the what have you being the particularly alarming part).

Oy vey.

The good news is that while I miss those little kid years, the big kid years are pretty darn amazing. I am so smitten with these girlies of mine... They are becoming such interesting, witty, thoughtful people. They amaze me every day with what they notice, their small gestures and grand moves. I am in awe. Sure, they can also be total pills (what kids aren't occasionally?) but mostly we're in a pretty good groove. I'm marinating in it, for sure.

I'm currently in the midst of a rather significant girl crush on Sophie Buhai... The former Vena Cava co-founder recently moved back to her home state of California where she's launched a killer line of sculptural jewelry, is selling a curated selection of artful objects, and is doing interiors projects. (She's a triple threat that one.)

Her aesthetic, at once minimal and warm, is utterly compelling...as are several quotes I've come across in recent interviews (see: girl crush).

Perfed Part Two

A perforated Jenni Kayne dress that, while out of my wheelhouse, is immensely lovely nonetheless...

I spent the better part of the day at the mall overseeing Audrey and her posse as they embarked on some birthday scavenger hunt action. In between recording five tweens serenading a Starbucks barista (and other mildly embarrassing acts) and feeling super old, I was stealthily window shopping with my friend Christine.

Thankfully, Christine is not only one of my dearest friends but also the mom of one of Audrey's dearest friends (lucky break, yes?). She also happens to be one of the most. stylish. women. I. know. Full stop. So, no matter how much I don't like the mall (and, friends, I really do not like the mall... see: old), somehow going there with Christine is wholly enjoyable enterprise. It also didn't hurt that I downed a bloody mary over lunch.

During said window shopping I found myself (yet again) ogling all things perfed. A giant black suede Pedro Garcia perforated bag and a buttery pierced suede bomber jacket were the two standouts. I'm still thinking about them hours later, so I thought why not dive all the way in and pull together a little perf wish list. Hey, I'm nothing if not committed...

Herewith seven object of my perforated affection:

1. Kelly Wearstler's gold perforated cuff goodness

2. Big oval perfed tights courtesy of Proenza Schouler via Moda Operandi

3. Pine + Boon's perfect perfed convertible pouches via Vee Caravan. Christine was carrying the tan one today, and I'm fairly confident that it was what kicked off the day's perforated preoccupation.

4. Arizona Muse's perfed neckline photographed by Paolo Roversi for Piece d’Anarchive SS13

5. Madame Wearstler's perforated studs (I think it's safe to say that Kelly seems to dig the perf as much as I do).

6. The aforementioned Pedro Garcia perforated suede tote... This was even more stellar in person friends. It is officially on my wish list.

7. And last but not least, that perfed bomber jacket... all members only wit a buttery pierced suede twist via Anthro... Would be so cute over a black pencil skirt and a white men's T, yes?

I loved this piece in T Magazine about designer Elizabeth Suzann's small collection of clean-lined, sculptural basics... I'm especially smitten with this quote from the article:

“Our brand isn’t about minimalism, although I do love minimal aesthetics,” she says. “It’s about not cluttering your life with things you won’t use.”

Truth be told, I'm a little smitten with the whole Elizabeth Suzann situation: the gorgeous, moody lookbook; the small studio in Nashville where each item is sewn by hand; the 20th-century artist muses (Eva Hesse and Louise Bourgeois) that inspire her designs; the desire to create lasting things so women will be compelled to buy fewer (but better) things -- all of it.

Well played Elizabeth. Well played.

The past few weeks have been a blur of client installs, quick road trips, projects, new kittens, swimming with the the girlies, pool-side dinners, accidents and mishaps (i.e.those previously mentioned stitches)... Summer has flown by. I can't believe we're in the last few weeks, tying things up before a last hurrah trip to Florida for shell foraging and turtle spotting and just general lazing about.

I'm trying, amid the blur, to really soak in my girlies. Turns out the flying by actually isn't a cliche; it happens. Yesterday the girls were babes and now they are fully-formed little creatures, voicing surprisingly articulate observations (frequently), helping around that house (occasionally), and causing me to marvel at every turn (always). They are truly the most amazing people. I pinch myself every day that I get to walk through this world with them.

I'm trying to savor them... trying not to let the blur take over. I have to stay on my game friends. This is the good stuff.

Loving: All Stitched Up Edition

A mishap involving some plant watering, a slippery patio, and a serious lack of grace landed me at the emergency room Sunday afternoon getting three stitches in my shin. Good times.

Surprisingly, in addition to the pain (actually not that bad) and the humiliation (worse than the pain), I felt a bit of the bad assery, as I've gone four decades without a single stitch, and now I feel like I have an official battle wound. Of course my battle is aiding wilting plants trying to survive the punishing Texas heat, but it's a battle nonetheless...

So in honor of my stitches I'm going to love on some knots again (this is becoming a bit of a trend for me -- the knots, not the stitches...hopefully -- witness here and here).

Let's start with Liz Robb's insanely lovely fiber art above (via Remodelista). Her instagram has become one of my faves. Just full of goodness...

Then there's the matter of Electric Feather's insanely chic knotty Infinite Halter Top.

And my beautiful and talented friend Amy Nordstrom's Lattice Cuff. I wear that bad boy nearly every. single. day.

Also a bit enamored of Callahan's lovely crochet dresses...

The adage is apparently Axel's favorite, as it expresses his design firm's commitment to "inspire artists and audiences through discovering and transmitting the beautiful, with a deep respect for everything that is authentic."

"Discovering and transmitting the beautiful" might be the best. description. ever. for the practice of design. And doing it to create happiness in other people? Well, that's pretty much the ultimate goal... I mean what else is there?

When a client comes to us without a clear sense of what they love, we get them on the Pinterest, stat. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Don't focus solely on interiors, we instruct them, just pin images that make you happy. We also encourage them not to curate or to go back and look at their boards right away. Just pin, pin, pin, and we'll be able to figure it out.

It's interesting to see what bubbles up -- The self-proclaimed minimalist who's pinned the hell out of tables teaming with accessories; the glam obsessed who's earmarked sparse, earthy images. It's the ultimate exercise in self-discovery, sussing out latent aesthetic leanings. It's my favorite game; and it almost always works.

So, it should be no surprise that a spin through my own Pinterest yesterday revealed a previously unknown predilection toward green. Those images above are but a smattering... Emerald, moss, loden, forest, sage -- they were all there. Over and over.

Now, I have never had anything but kind words for green. I'm a fan. Heck, at one point my breakfast and guest rooms were swathed in the fair hue. But of late, green has not been my jam. I'm not working it into my house, I'm not working it into client's houses (save a pair of killer kelly green vintage Parsons console tables that belonged to the wife of a Dallas Cowboy from the 1960s...clearly I had to use those bad boys). It's just not in my head space.

Or so I thought.

Pinterest has proved otherwise. I'm apparently feeling the green friends. And, truth be told, I'm a little bit scared. Who knows what will happen next...(Bottle green master bedroom anyone?) Stay tuned.

A Simplified Summer

"Hot as hell" and "summer in Texas" might as well be interchangeable, so you'd think my go-to summer uniform would be one of those barely-there sundresses below... And yet, my daily get up veers decidedly more in the direction of that dress over jeans action above.

See, in my line of work, a typical day can involve a fancy client meeting (add a blazer and some wedges), a muddy site visit (ditch the blazer and swap the wedges for some rubber flip flops that I can rinse off), and some serious schlepping and hauling (keep the flip flops, sweat my ass off, and hope for the best). It's pretty much foolproof friends.

Inspired by a Q&A over on the Anaise blog in which designer Mary Chan of Studio Bartleby shares her summer essentials (rose water and tea tree oil, cotton dresses, sandals, straw hat, sparkling water, orange juice, pesto), I thought I'd go beyond the dress over jeans and share a few other things that are currently helping me get me through the hot as hell, ahem summer in Texas.

Herewith the survival kit...

cherries. holy kombucha. dr. hauschka clarifying day oil. milky chance. a big stack of turkish beach towels (they dry fast, and we spend a lot of time in the pool). lime topo chico. elta md uv clear spf. my library card. toasted sesame seeds. air conditioning(!)

(Did I mention it's as hot as hell?)

From Inspiration to Reality (Or 1530 Main -- The Joule Hotel's New Publication)

One of the best parts of working at a multi-disciplinary design studio is getting to toggle between such varied creative projects and do a little left brain/right brain switch-a-roo. While my days are largely filled with interiors endeavors, I also jump in on event design (a whole other animal) and some of our branding projects.

Friends, I looove the branding stuff. Love. It. I also happen to love magazines -- reading them, looking at them, re-reading them, making them. (I especially enjoy the making them situation.) So the fact that one of our most kick-ass branding clients, The Joule Hotel (a new website it also in the works), asked us to help them create a publication for their guests, well, was pretty much nirvana.

The result, 1530 Main, is pictured above, from brainstorming session to birthed piece. It was collaboration at its best. Can't wait for issue two.

My life is luxurious, but not in the way most people see luxury. It is luxurious because I have freedom, and for me, freedom is wealth.

A painter friend sent me this link to a letter Sol Lewitt sent to Eva Hesse and it basically is the best thing relating to work I have ever read. In short: not being afraid to make bad stuff, just do it. Not trying to be cool, but making your own uncool. To shock yourself at how bad you can be and see where it goes. Also important for life; go on date night. A babysitter is cheaper than a divorce lawyer.

We have a tendency to fall into group obsessions at the studio. Recent objects of our collective fixation have included Topo Chico, staghorn ferns, Raquel Allegra, the Evan with chicken at Taco Joint, and Le Labo Santal 33 (we're all about the high/low).

Of late, Lise Silva's knotted necklaces have joined the list.

It started with that ivory "vibration knot" action above. I almost bought it at Christine's pop up shop a few weeks ago, but in a rare moment of responsibility and frugality, I decided to abstain from purchasing. Sam showed up at the same pop up a couple of hours later and snapped it up. Catie also coveted the "vibration knot" but ended up ordering the "entrance knot" online. She and Sam eventually traded necklaces and currently have them in heavy rotation. Watching the two of them sport their Silva's has made me totally regret my initial decision. (Who am I kidding... I'm jealous every time I see one of them donning that groovy fiber goodness.)

I may have just purchased my own Silva.

As I was parked in front of the mirror this weekend, clumsily wielding a curling iron in an attempt to approximate some messy cool-girl wave action into my otherwise volume-challenged hair, I was envying Leslie Fremar. Big time.

The stylist is decidedly low maintenance. In fact, I think it's safe to assume that the former protégé to Anna Wintour and Tonne Goodman (another poster girl for the less-is-more beauty ethos) doesn't even own a curling iron.

Other things Fremar doesn't do:

Wash her hair every day
Wash her face (this one I can't really get behind... I am obsessed with the face washing)
Wear makeup very often

But the real mind blower (and, let's face it, key to the whole low maintenance equation) is the fact that when she looks in the mirror with nothing on, she thinks, wait for it, she looks fine.

Revolutionary, yes?

And if she's tired, she just throws on those black specs above to detract from the whole situation and calls it a day.

Leslie Fremar you are my hero. Well, with the exception of that whole face washing thing. But, everything else. Yes and yes.

Some Recent Work... (And Some Client Love)

One of the most rewarding things about my job is getting to work with such varied styles. Some of our clients are happiest in bright, airy spaces punctuated with the occasional hit of color, some like a moody, more glamorous vibe, some fall in the middle of the spectrum... At the end of the day, it's not about imposing our style on our clients but about facilitating and collaborating and refining (and sometimes pushing) until we get to a result that feels like a total reflection of them.

But every once in a while you get to work with people (like, say, the three above) that happen to love the exact. same. things. you love, and you have the opportunity to create spaces that, well, you want to move right into.

That's when you mix up a cocktail, high five your partners in crime and marvel that you actually get to do this action for a living.

tonne's home from the september 2001 vogue via habitually chic

A rain-soaked Memorial Day weekend (we're in deluge territory here friends) ruled out your grilling and pooling and, well, all other requisite "beginning of summer" holiday activities. Never fear, there were still burgers, they were just procured from our favorite neighborhood joint and consumed while partaking in a particularly epic Gilmore Girls binge with Audrey.

When not immersed in antics of Lorelai and Rory and the good citizens of Stars Hollow, I read... and read and read. No novels, mind you (it's Memorial Day weekend people, beach-esque reading only); it was all about a towering stack-o-magazines. I've been ripping out inspiring tear sheets and articles like it's my job -- at the top of the heap, Holly Brubach's article about stylist Tonne Goodman and her two sisters in the April issue of W.

The piece had me at Tonne (her style and aesthetic sensibility being pretty much off the charts -- see exhibits A-D above), but by the end of the piece, it was her mother Marian who I'd fallen for. Hard.

Specifically there was this:

Marian made sure the children got the full benefit of growing up in New York—taking them to the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum, the New York City Ballet, an Ike and Tina Turner concert, musicals and off-Broadway theater, including some productions (Hair, The Boys in the Band) other parents might have deemed unsuitable for kids. “These were things I wanted to go to, so I took them along,” Marian says. “And they seemed to enjoy it.”

Tiger mothers looking to raise girls who grow up to rule the world would do well to consider Marian Goodman’s style of parenting. Though all of her daughters...have succeeded in careers requiring visual imagination and a discriminating eye, she did not teach them to draw or even encourage them to study any subject in particular. Stacy says what strikes her now as most remarkable about their childhood is the “mixture of discipline and freedom” that their mother cultivated. “The household was very organized, but there was also the chance to pursue your interests. Never this pressure of ‘What are you going to become?’” On Friday afternoons, Marian took them to Central Park, set up her easel, and painted while the children scampered around her “like puppies,” Stacy recalls. That Marian made time to do what she loved left a lasting impression. Though the girls credit their mother with experiences that formed the foundation for their own creative education, Marian insists there was no master plan. “I wanted them to find their own way,” she says.

I've written of my admiration for this particular style of mothering before. Marian and Talia, I do believe you are soul sisters.

Recent Work: Gettin' Our Mantle On

Thankfully all that sand and surf and what have you was indeed restorative, as we all hit the ground running this week with a swirl of school/work/household crazy... I still need to share some snaps of our magical trip (alas, now sadly a distant memory). In the meantime, I thought I'd share some fun work that Sam and I did for the May/June issue of D Home in the form of a little mantle design challenge action.

I have to say, it was pretty fun (if not slightly surreal) to be on the other side of the page this time around, as a couple of years ago I was helping create these kind of stories for the magazine, and now I get to make pretty spaces with one of my dearest friends that are featured in one.

After a reluctant year off, Bryan, the girlies and I are hitting the road today as we resume our annual pilgrimage to Seaside .

That crochet tote action above is now bursting with reading material and sunscreen. For seven days our most pressing decision will likely be whether we should walk or ride our bikes to the beach. Gin and tonics, drip castles, and some general laziness await.

Rejuvenation, here we come.

We're coming off a particularly crazy weekend at the studio with back-to-back installs and two big events that had us gold leafing and taping and and constructing all manner of eye-popping awesomeness until the wee hours...

I'm just now catching my catching my breath, which pretty much involves eating the rest of Millie's Easter basket candy (shhh) while cleaning up the approximately one zillion photos on my phone (I am nothing if not a multitasker friends).

In weeding through said photos, I noticed a distinct floral theme surfacing. It seems amid the craziness, the past couple of weeks have also been rife with all manner of blooms (apparently even on my lunch). It's some seriously gorgeous, lush botanical action. Spring is here people -- in its full glory.

Good stuff for sure.
