Hey Billie's lovely piece on Sweden, which feels a bit like the continuation of last week's Dieter Rams action, especially this bit...

Shadowy, deep-hued interiors -- earthy, ornate, moody at the same time -- and centuries-old architecture. Even in modern spaces, rooms are often left unlit (or only softly lit) during the day, relying on deep windows and overhangs to subdue the light. There is no need to fill in every shadow.

Less is more friends. Less is more.

Kule's horn pendant on a box chain...it might just be an acceptable replacement for that giant tassel necklace I can't seem to find anywhere (and I've looked...oh how I've looked).

So technically this is a jumble of snaps, some from the weekend, and some from the TENOVERSIX store, which (finally) opened last week in the Joule and is total perfection. (Confetti System, Adam Silverman for Heath, Anndra Neen, Apiece Apart...oh my!)

In addition to pics of the indie retail goodness that has landed in our fair city, you'll also find above photos of our Mother's Day adventure at the Nasher (beyond delightful) and our in-progress attempt (attempt being the key word here) at recreating Jordan's genius "Geometric Party Installation"for lovely cousin Erin's rehearsal dinner happening this Friday at our casa. I'll let you know how that action goes.

Rachel Comey's Chernist dress -- my hands down favorite dress of the season. Full stop. I want this bad boy in the worst possible way (despite the fact that that cut out action on the bodice scares the bejesus out of me).

Dieter Rams' ode to omission. I am struggling with the simplicity of late friends (see the massive dress coveting above). When things get busy and life feels harried (i.e. now), mindfulness seems to fall by the wayside, and I get stuck in "over" mode. Over drinking, over eating, over purchasing, over thinking. Somehow I misguidedly think that throwing stuff at my frantic self is somehow the answer. It's not good. But admission is the first step right? Admission then omission. At least that's what I'm going with.

There are currently sundry vases and random vessels scattered about my house filled with half dead flowers (another side effect of the harried). I am comforted by the fact that in Dutch artist Frank Bruggeman's hands my domestic shortfallings can become works of art (spotted via En Suite). Brilliant.

Nearness of Distance -- Discovered in my comments. A total aesthetic kindred spirit. I love it when that happens...

Some Scenes From The Weekend...

The weekend was a blur of tissue paper, tequila, and Advil (not all at once, don't worry). We'll start with the tissue paper, or, more specifically, a little tissue paper-related caution. Ready?

If you ever find yourself thinking all smug-like, "those Confetti System fringy trees and tassel garlands would be super easy to make...why would I ever buy them when I could just grab some rope, a few branches from my yard, and some tissue from the craft store and bust those bad boys out," well, don't. Friends, they are not easy. At all. Those Confetti System peeps are freakin' machines, what with their perfectly uniform tassels and expertly executed tassel hanging. Cutting perfectly uniform tassels is hard. Affixing said perfectly uniform tassels to a foraged tree branch? Also hard. In fact, the entire enterprise is hard.

Which leads me to the tequila...

After spending five hours Friday evening assembling my imitation Confetti System "fringy tree" for lovely cousin Erin's wedding shower this weekend, I needed a bit of a drink. Luckily, being Cinco de Mayo and all, tequila seemed to be flowing out of the woodworks. There was a neighborhood party flush with all manner of tequila-laden beverages, brunch at Tracy and Van's house (which was recently the benefactor of Sam's design prowess as seen in those last four photos above) featuring, yep, more tequila, and dinner with Kate and her lovely family to which she arrived with tequila (and all of the rest of the makings for Thai basil watermelon margaritas) in hand.

I'm guessing I don't have to explain the Advil...

Friends, it's time for another "Inspired By" post, and this time the object of my creative affection is the amazing Julie Cohn.

There are very few woman that inspire me (both creatively and as a mother) like Julie does. An accomplished artist and designer, her compelling (and intensely beautiful) work ranges from public art, textiles, painting, and, most recently, a line of organic, sculptural jewelry that I am completely and totally obsessed with. Full stop. Her taste is impeccable and her aesthetic sensibility otherworldly.

Julie also possesses an honesty about her journey as a mother that is refreshing, and, well...necessary. Every time we spend time together I am fortified. I am lucky to call her a friend, and I am thrilled that she's agreed to share some of her creative inspirations here with us this week.

I'm also thrilled that she's agreed to do a little giveaway (as her jewelry needs to be out in the world).

Creative Fodder: I'm intrigued by this lily that opened from the sides rather than the top. The petals had grown together at the top. It's inspiring a new jewelry piece I'm working on.
Works in Progress: My sketches in bronze are a key part of my design process.
Reading: I'm currently in the midst of The Sweet Life in Paris by David Lebovitz. He's the former pastry chef from Chez Panisse and author of numerous dessert books attempts to explain french culture and their idiosyncrasies through hilarious day to day life stories and recipes.
Shoes: Works of art for your feet. I wish these CYDWOQ beauties were mine... I am afraid my daughter's only memory of me will be sitting at the computer looking at tiny pictures of shoes for hours on end.
Pinterest Window Shopping: Pinterest is speed dating for shopping. You cull through the clutter pretty quickly, which is helpful on my eternal quest the perfect handbag.
Listening: I love Chris Botti in Boston. Botti is a horn player that accompanies a wide variety of artists singing standards. It's kind of sappy but I love it.
Our Garden: The natural world is endlessly inspiring. Luckily my husband is a landscape architect, so our garden is pretty fantastic. (Ed: Julie's husband David Rolston is an amazing landscape architect, and their garden is beyond...)
Indigo: I am obsessed with ethnic indigo.

More inspiration board goodness, this time courtesy of the Citizens of Humanity studio tour over on Domaine. (Domaine also being an object of my affection this week.)

Every. Single. Thing. about Domahoka (discovered via Curate The Day). Words, images, design...all of it, just stunning (even that A Détacher wedge sandal/sock combo action above, which I am completely obsessed with, despite the fact that said combo will never be a part of my life in any way other than ogling).

And then there's this Tracy Reese frock... It feels oddly reminiscent of that A Détacher wedge sandal/sock combo action, yes?

Mary H K Choi's insanely beautiful/heart breaking/haunting/joyful essay about her mother. My friend and coworker Carol sent it to me the other day in an email that said, simply, "this is so, so, so good." She was right. It should also be noted that Carol herself is also so, so, so good. I'm a fan.

The weekend was filled with all manner of festive happenings. We celebrated Bryan's birthday with a family Mediterranean feast on Friday, during which I ate my body wight in hummus. I spent an altogether glorious Sunday at the Nasher with my lovely friend Lucia where we helped littles create mini Christo and Giacometti- inspired works of art at The Great Create (an utterly awesome family fundraiser that D Moms was involved in). And, to cap things off, the girlies had their dance recital last night, and, really, what's sweeter than a gaggle of 4-9 year-old girls sporting tutus and twirling around...

And, yet, despite the hummus and the tulle and the soul nourishing art making, I'm feeling decidedly in a funk. Melancholy, uninspired, generally Bluesville, USA. I had planned to analyze the potential factors behind my lack of mojo here on the blog, but as I was gearing up get all navel gazey and what not, Millie burst in and excitedly declared that she had just "thought of something really crazy," and "did I want to hear it?"

Ummm...Yes! 100%, totally and unequivocally yes. Do tell Millster.

She went on to say that she couldn't stop thinking about what would have happened if instead of "Life of Pi" it was "Life of Pie" and said pie was floating around in the ocean, little bits of crust and filling falling off into the water, before being totally gobbled up by the Lion.

To which I responded, "Yes, that would have been totally crazy...and it would have been a much, much shorter movie."

Then she asked me if she could have some candy and ran off to the kitchen.

That kid's brain never ceases to amaze me. And while my funk hasn't lifted, in the face of her newly scripted movie about baked goods lost at sea, narcissistic blog ramblings just seem, well...pointless.

So she saved you guys from my blathering. She saved me too.

First there was last week's collection of images that made every fiber of my (OCD-loving) being feel warm and fuzzy. Now I'm getting all misty about other people's (inspiration) boards (OPB if you will). It seems I'm on a roll with the themed "Loving" lists of late.

There actually is a bit of rhyme and reason behind this one... I'm announcing the winner of our first "Inspired By" post (drum roll...congrats Jennifer John on being the lucky recipient of those killer Heather Taylor textiles), so a little roundup of inspiration board goodness just seems appropriate, yes?

Ok, let's get started. Hello Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock hanging out in front of your awesome mood board. I love the clothes you make, for the record. You guys are killing it.

Joanna, your assemblage of art and photos and fabric scraps and dried flowers is, well, the perfect embodiment of you. (Which, I suppose, is exactly the point of a good inspiration board...well played my lady, well played.)

Clare, you make my favorite bags of. all. time. Full stop. Your board is pretty rad too...

French Vogue, I'm also rather smitten with the inspiration-board feature that you did on Sofia Coppola in your Dec/Jan 05 issue.... But then again I'm pretty smitten with everything that you (and Sofia Coppola for that matter) do.

Oh Jenna Lyons...there are no words, really. Your wall sized board, your Moroccan rug and pink sheepskin, that Cherner armchair barely peeking out over the top of your watermelon Blu Dot Strut table.

Sigh.

Christene given my own inability to publicly declare my deep and abiding fondness for pink (wait, I just did it, didn't I?) your pink-centric inspiration board makes me almost unnaturally happy.

Some Scenes From The Weekend

It was a"blink and it's Monday" weekend again... Bryan and Millie were off on another father/daughter camp out (they are camp out machines those two) involving hiking and archery and petting baby horses and all sorts of loveliness involving nature. Audrey and I, on the other hand, opted for a more ZsaZsa Gabor in Green Acres (am I dating myself here?) version of nature and hit some shops and painted our nails and went out to eat...twice. (We did manage to squeeze in a bike ride, but we were wearing dresses, so it wasn't a particularly athletic enterprise. More of a bike "stroll" if you will.)

We redeemed ourselves on Sunday though. As in preparation for two little events we're hosting for lovely cousin Erin and fiancé Ben's upcoming nuptials, we spent the entire day digging and planting and generally getting dirty in our backyard as we spruced the heck out of the patio.

What can I say, we like to stay balanced friends. We're all about the yen and yang. It's good for the soul (though not so good for the nails...suffice to say that paint job from Saturday is a bit wrecked, just sayin'.)

I am endlessly fascinated by the creative process, specifically what inspires artists, makers and just generally amazing ladies. So in a twist on my old "Blogger's Favorites" series, I'm launching "Inspired By" here on the blog, where I occasionally share the inspirations of, well...inspiring people." (How's that for eloquent?)

I'm kicking things off with my virtual friend, and a woman that I admire greatly (let's just say that she's a major girl crush), Heather Taylor.

A gallerist, cook, weaver, maker, entrepreneur, bon vivant, entertainer, blogger... (the list goes on), Heather embraces creativity in a way that is wholly infectious. In addition to her day job running Taylor De Cordoba, a Culver City art gallery/creative lab that she and her husband Alex opened in 2006 to showcase emerging artists and serve young collectors as they begin building collections, she produces a series of webisodes and pens a stunning blog that celebrates living a beautiful, meaningful life (a woman after my own heart).

In her free time (?!) Heather has also recently launched Heather Taylor Home, a line of textiles that perfectly encapsulate her aesthetic sensibility.

Clearly Heather is the perfect person to kick off this new little series, yes? So I asked Heather to share some of the things that inspire her creatively, and she happily obliged with the seven items below. She also offered to do a giveaway of some of her beautiful textiles to one of my readers. (Thanks Heather!)

Travel. Last summer I went to Santa Fe and was in awe of the architecture, textiles, colors, and food. I still reference the notes I made following an inspiring tour of Georgia O'Keefee's home.
Cooking. Creating a beautiful meal always gets my creative juices flowing.
Books. My favorite books are always on hand for design reference and insight.
Museums. I am always looking to the past for reference, and the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City is a treasure trove.
Flowers. The colors and composition of a good flower arrangement can be the jumping off point for my designs.
Color. A table of radishes and eggs can inspire my vibrant yet earthy color palette.
Yarn. The colors and textures in my yarn basket always give me ideas and the making textiles by hand (knitting, weaving) is so satisfying.

I tend to have, well...obsessive tendencies. I like the order. A lot. I like to tidy, straighten, and arrange. I live for the tossing and minimizing and purging. In fact, I might be the Goodwill's biggest patron. In the midst of all sorts of things I can't control (global warming, random acts of violence, the amount of homework the girlies bring home. e-mail overload, traffic), organizing my home, my possessions, my desk and drawers and closets brings me immense comfort. It keeps me sane even.

So this week's loving list is a bit of an homage to my love of order. I'm not gonna lie...these photos, starting with that one above via Cicoute Bakery, make me far happier than a photo should. But I'm not afraid... Long live OCD!

The weekend involved some massive regrouping on the home front punctuated by a couple of rather swell events, namely a trunk show for (the incredibly lovely) Viktor & Rolf at Forty Five Ten, family dinner at Janet's, and an insanely adorable fiesta celebrating our sweet friend Dottie's 3rd birthday. (Holy cow can my friend Alicia throw a party).

Given my tendency of late to not budge from my computer (a.k.a. the glowing albatross) during the week, there's something wholly satisfying about the aforementioned home front regrouping come Saturday. I actually look forward to folding the laundry and lighting incense, and sweeping and cutting branches from the lawn to plop in vases throughout the house. I like to make cookies and a big pot of Mexican soup and a vat of green juice (also big). It's restorative, this weeding through the previous week's flotsam and jetsam and putting my home back in order. It is the magic of the mundane... And it's almost as good as a birthday fiesta.

Almost.

De Kooning, Chagall, and Flavin, Oh My. (A.K.A. Get Thee to The Dallas Art Fair)

I posted about this weekend's Dallas Art Fair over at my day job, but it's so good I had to give it a shout out here as well. Bryan and I attended the preview event last night, and I was completely blown away. A sort of mini Art Basel, the galleries present and the works they were exhibiting were beyond stellar. I was in a stupor of frantic iPhone snapping the entire night. My only regret (besides not possessing any disposable income to acquire said stellar works) was that, in my awe-struck state of ogling and snapping away, I wrote down exactly zero artist's names. Zip, zilch, nada.

If you are a fellow Dallasite, I would highly recommend buying a day pass for $25 and hightailing it down to f.i.g. to cheek out the fair in person. It's well worth it friends.

Isabel Marant's Fall 2013 collection. Despite the mixed reviews, I am utterly and completely smitten with every single piece. I like her evolution toward a more minimal, sculptural aesthetic. The structure and shapes and origami-like folds are incredible, and you know I love me some neutrals... Isabel, you can do no wrong.

Some Scenes From Our Beach Adventures

We are back...regrouping, reassimilating, and trying to keep that easy vacation vibe going now that we're back to our real-life responsibilities.

It was a pretty glorious eight days for a slew of obvious reasons: sun, sand, surf, ice cream, nature walks, bike rides, picnics, dance parties, farmers markets. But what made the trip truly awesome was that for the first time in the nine years that we've gone on this vacation both girlies fully got it. They understood how special all that aforementioned sun, sand, surf, ice cream, et al really was. And they told us. A lot.

Take, for example, day two of the trip, when Millie and I were partaking in some lazing on the grass/people watching/fresh juice sipping. She reached over, cupped my face in her hands, and said, "This is the best day in my life...ever."

You can't put a price on that action friends. It is just good stuff.

However (there's always a however, isn't there?), there were a few, well...not so awesome moments. It wasn't all sunshine and juice. In between the getting it the girls bickered, a lot...oh and I got, wait for it...Shingles (!), on the very first day. And said Shingles lasted the entire vacation (still have 'em in fact), and they hurt, like the dickens.

And, yet, somehow I kept on trucking. There was no way, after all the planning and anticipating and driving, that I was going to let some angry rash and nerve pain ruin my vacation. No siree. In all seriousness, I took meds, practiced my breathing exercises, and said all manner of prayers and chants to the powers that be that the damn stuff wouldn't spread to my face. Then I threw a t-shirt over my bathing suit, poured myself a drink, and proceeded to have the best. week. ever. (Give or take.)

Just a few scenes this weekend -- a bit of collage-making action by me and the Millster in between more pressing matters like, say, getting ready for our annual Seaside trip.

(Can you tell I'm excited?)

We made to do lists and started packing and tried on swimsuits (to soften the shock of wearing them for real later this week), and slathered on self tanner (post the aforementioned swimsuit trying on) and purchased copious amounts of sunscreen... Friends, I'm not sure I've ever been more ready for a family vacation. This little crew of mine is in desperate need of concentrated, unstructured time together (together being the key component). We need some lazy, some rambling about, some staring at the ocean and digging in the sand... You get the idea.

I am counting the hours...

Some Scenes From The Weekend...

I took the latter part of last week off to partake in a little spring break revelry with the girlies, and, minus their bouts of bickering (oh friends, we have entered the bickering stage, and it is painful), it was a pretty blissful situation.

We hung out with Lucia and her littles at her wholly inspiring house, ate ice cream, played with neighborhood buddies, took in some live music and an outdoor movie in the Nasher's garden, ogled the Chagall exhibit at the DMA, made two batches of insanely good chocolate chip cookies from the Neiman Marcus cookbook (best. chocolate. chip. cookies. ever. full stop), had fun with paint, and just generally lazed about.

It was a good four days. I'm sad it's Monday. Sady, sad, sad.

Forty Five Ten, Bring (And Put) Your Daughter to Work Day, and Baby's Breath (AKA The Random Bits)

First, a fun little post on Forty Five Ten's fantastic blog in which I pick some of my favorite things in store. Friends, I couldn't love Forty Five Ten more. It is truly a gem in every way. The store itself is artful and inspiring, the merchandise mix is perfection, and the staff (Thom, Allie, Callie, Missy, Molly, Chris, et al) is at once incredibly cool and kind and lovely... If you ever make it to Dallas, you have to put it on your "to visit" list.

(P.S. Brian Bolke, the genius retail savant behind Forty Five Ten, is also half of the duo behind my beloved Number One/Le Jus...just sayin'.)

Next up, a little fine tuning of Audrey's work ethic in the form of a day spent at my office earlier this week. She was adopted by the awesome peeps in the art department who promptly put her to work rearranging and organizing a bazillion magazines. The child was in heaven. Now if I could only get her to clean her bedroom. Hmm...

Finally there's the matter of Gypsophila or "Baby's Breath." Paired with red roses (or any roses for that matter) and sad leather leaf greenery, and the wispy filler is lame town USA. However, alone, in a big mass, and it's pretty chic, don't you think??
