Amazon Rumoured to release Kindle Fire 2

Amazon is rumoured to be preparing a new larger 9″ Kindle Fire 2 tablet due for the Christmas period. No specifications have been announced as yet. The success of the original 7″ Kindle Fire tablet stands Amazon as the major competitor to Apples iPad, while Apple is rumoured to be preparing an iPad mini also of 7″ proportion to rival the Fire and lower priced Android tablets.
As yet there has been no indication of a UK release for the tablet, although Amazon is tipped to release a new Kindle e-reader this summer with front lighting added for night time reading, initial concerns are a drain on battery life.

Facebook rollout mobile app update

Mark Zuckerberg recently stated the Facebook mobile apps were a top priority for 2012, and in true form, a roll-out is underway with a new look to photos appearing larger within a post, similar to Instagram which the company recently acquired for $1 billion.

iOS 5.1.1 released

Apple have released a new update for iPhones & iPads, iOS version 5.1.1

And if you haven’t already been prompted by your device, then head to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts, if your battery level is less than 50% you’ll need to plug in to complete the update!

Windows 8 drops DVD playback support

Microsoft has confirmed DVD video playback is to be dropped from Windows 8 and Windows Media Player. Support will now come from third parties such as VLC.
Microsoft has decided to move to a full featured codec pack to allow playback of downloaded and streaming content.

Galaxy Tab 2 gets UK April launch

Samsung’s latest tablets, the Galaxy Tab 2, has finally received a launch date for the UK, with the tablets available at the end of April, delays caused by compatibility issues with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich moved the launch back from March.
The tab will be available in 7″ & 10.1″ sizes.

Dropbox doubles referral space!

Dropbox has doubled the storage space for referrals to the service.
When your friends download Dropbox by way of invite you will both now receive 500mb, doubling the previous 250mb, and with a maximum of 32 referrals that’s a huge 16gb on top of the initial 2gb.

The announcement comes quickly after news of investment from U2′s Bono & Edge and the possible launch of Google’s GDrive!

London tube live updates added to Google Maps

Google has added London tube live updates to Google Maps.
The updates can be accessed via PC, Mac or Android device (smartphone/tablet).
Earlier in the year nationwide train timetables were added and just last month traffic data was added signalling further the demise of the dedicated satnav unit.

Xperia S Yellow Screen Problems

The new Sony Xperia S smartphone released in March after the buyout of Ericsson, and dropping the name, has developed a yellow screen tint, affected to some handsets. Sony has rectified the issue for all new handsets and will replace any affected screens at no cost to the consumer.

Virgin Media Revamp Bundles

Virgin Media has reshaped its bundle packages called “Collections” which will now include the TiVo service as standard. The move comes in line with the broadband speed increases, the basic tier starts with 30mb broadband.
TV advertising for the collections is due to start tomorrow and David Tennant will star alongside Richard Branson.
