Living in Minnesota on the Mississippi River

2016-01-07T06:14:00.001-08:00

It has been a warm fall and we had no snow for Christmas. The snow came a couple days after Christmas. I went home to the upper peninsula of Michigan and they also had no snow for Christmas. Lake Superior and Lake Michigan had very little ice on them. With little to no ice Lake Superior produced a lot of snow while I was visiting. I shoveled twice in four days.
It is snowing today in Minnesota. I just returned inside from shoveling. The plows are out plowing under an inch of snow. It's amazing the difference between how we treat the roads in Michigan and Minnesota. I was surprised to see that they were plowing this morning with such little bit of snow. The snow falling now in Minnesota is considered heavy snow but the heavy snow I saw in Michigan I couldn't see the road. I can see the road here in Minnesota. Even the plows are different here. In Minnesota they push a mound of snow at the end of your driveway while in Michigan it is thrown in your driveway so you don't get a mound of snow at the end.
In Michigan I watched the people across the street shovel a path to their car. They brushed off their car, loaded the kids up and plowed through their driveway and off to school and work they went. In Minnesota they would have shut the schools down and shoveled before even thinking about leaving. We definitely learn to live in our environment no matter where we are.
I am enjoying the new variety of winter birds I see out my window at the feeder. The juncos have arrived and many more cardinals are showing up. The doves love the food as they perch themselves on the feeder. Woodpeckers love the suit I made for them. I had to frost the windows to take the glare off so the birds would not fly into the windows.
The snow is pretty to watch as it is falling from the sky. It's a white winter world outside! The snow is perfect to build a snowman.

Living in Minnesota on the Mississippi River

2015-11-02T11:45:00.002-08:00

November 2, 2015
El Nino is here this year and it has been unseasonably warm. Right now it is 66 degrees. My husband just got done mowing the lawn and it is November 2nd. People are still wearing shorts when we should be wearing our winter clothing. We have had a very dry Autumn which means the ducks most likely will not fly this way from Canada. If the weather doesn't cooperate the ducks may not leave Canada!!
Even though the weather hasn't cooperated the season is still upon us. We just got done with Halloween and now we are moving into Thanksgiving. The craft shows are in full swing for our Christmas shopping pleasure. This is one of my favorite seasons Autumn into Winter.
I cleaned the windows yesterday and took out all the screens. Without the screens in the windows the house is so much brighter and sunnier.
Went for a walk this morning with the dogs. All the yards are decorated with pumpkins and Halloween leftovers. I decorated the deck and turned on Halloween music outside to draw the kids in for treats. My Halloween is all cleaned up! The squirrels ate my pumpkins!
I have a bird feeder right outside my door. The squirrels think it is a squirrel feeder. I am in the process of war with the squirrels. I think the squirrels are winning!

Boo-nanas with Lemon Essential Oil

Boo-nanas with Lemon Essential Oil

For Halloween this year, try making this fun and healthy snack that your children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews will surely love!

Servings: 4

Time: 15 minutes active; 30 minutes inactive

Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

2 bananas

8 popsicle sticks

1 cup Greek yogurt

1 drop lemon essential oil

16 mini chocolate chips

Instructions:

1. Peel bananas, and cut them in half. Then cut the halves lengthwise.

2. Carefully stick a popsicle stick in each banana, and then lay the bananas on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper.

3. Place the cookie sheet with the bananas on it in the freezer for about 30 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, mix together the yogurt and lemon essential oil in a glass. Note: You can use any flavor of Greek yogurt you desire; just choose one that is white in color and that goes well with the lemon flavor. We used both blueberry and strawberry yogurt with delicious results.

5. Remove the bananas from the freezer, and dip each of them in the glass of yogurt—turning until fully coated.

6. Return the bananas to the waxed paper, laying them on their backs, and place two mini chocolate chips near the top of each banana for eyes.

7. Once all of the bananas are done, return them to the freezer until ready to serve.

8. Enjoy these darling boo-nanas as a delicious and healthy frozen Halloween treat!

Extra Idea:

Try substituting the Greek yogurt with melted white chocolate for a sweeter Halloween treat!
