Thought we’d give you a little sneak peek at one of the new lingerie brands just in at Simply Beach. We’ve picked a wide choice of underwear brands for you, from designer lingerie to everyday knickers and bras.

Some of the brands we are stocking at Simply Beach are already firm favourites with our swimwear customers . Today we’re focusing on the fabulous Freya, who make gorgeous swimwear, beachwear and lingerie for women who wear a D+ cup size.

The Freya swimwear we sell at Simply Beach is just remarkably flattering and the same applies to the bras and lingerie. Our customers (not to mention staff!) love the fit of the swimwear and beachwear and we can safely say that their lingerie does not disappoint. What we find so refreshing about Freya  is that they make bras that are supremely supportive, uplifting and comfortable, but still so pretty.

Freya clearly recognise that the days are long gone when larger cup size equals dull and frumpy. Their lingerie is ultra-feminine and exceptionally flattering. We’re really excited to have this brand in stock and are pretty sure you’ll love the designs, fabrics and pretty prints as much as we do.

Freya underwear is made from delicate yet supportive materials with lovely, feminine prints. Vintage inspired florals and subtle paisleys sit alongside stripes and checks, finished with pretty embroidery and lace. More contemporary prints also feature but on the whole this brand is perhaps best known for its femininity and outstanding support for bigger busts.

One thing that women love about Freya bras is that they give your bust a great shape; uplifted without feeling squashed. Comfortable, supportive and pretty as a picture – a winning combination in our books!

This is a bold, beautiful year for women’s underwear and while there are a few key trends dominating the lingerie and hosiery world in 2012, there’s so much variety around you can pick and choose at whim. From retro glamour to eccentric colour clashing, anything goes this year. Here’s what’s hot in the lingerie world in 2012.

Bold and beautiful colour

Quite a few lingerie designers are moving away from just using traditional black, white and nude as they infuse their collections with bold, bright colour – zesty lemon and lime, brilliant cobalt blue, violet-hued purple, coral and everything in between. Bold use of colour is really big news in lingerie this year; pastels also feature, tying in nicely with the vintage-inspired trend.

Freya, Lepel and Elle MacPherson Intimates are three lingerie brands using colour beautifully and to stunning effect. There are some fabulous prints around this year, too. Vintage-inspired ditsy florals, as well as aztec and animal prints.

Socks and tights are bright and bold and there are no rules to say they have to match anything else in your wardrobe! It’s all about colour clash and mismatching.

Ultra-feminine shape

This year sees lingerie designers looking to a bygone era of hourglass figures and curvaceous silhouettes, brought bang up to date with modern materials and colours. The 1940s/1950s pin-up girl look is really strong this year, giving you the curves you need to carry off the vintage look authentically. This is all about high glamour and ultra-femininity. Shapewear and underwear is designed to create a cinched-in waist and superb cleavage. Hosiery is luxurious, sheer and seamed.

The 1950s saw a trend for bullet bras, or cone bras, giving the bust a conical shape. This was revived  by Madonna in the 1980s and is seeing another comeback, albeit in a less exaggerated way.

It may have been a case of looks before comfort for women all those years ago, but advancements in fabrics and design mean that we no longer have to suffer in our underwear. Shapewear manages to control without feeling restrictive and lingerie looks decadent and opulent yet feels comfortable to wear.

For a softer silhouette, retro-inspired silk camisoles and knickers provide a feminine alternative to the bombshell look. In short, it’s all about ultra-feminine shapes and the celebration of womanly curves this year.

Soft and silky fabric

Continuing the ultra-feminine theme, fabrics are super-sensuous, with lace trimmed silks and natural soft cottons. Silky soft camisoles and babydolls are as beautiful to touch as they are to look at and wear.

On the other end of the scale from natural silks and cottons are the highly innovative fabrics being used in shapewear and lingerie. Brands like Wonderbra and Miraclesuit are constantly innovating and improving, so that their women’s underwear and shapewear gives you the support and control you need and both looks and feels amazing.

Everybody knows that choosing the right bikini when appearing on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here can help to make a career.

Take Myleene Klass and her infamous white bikini, it won her a modelling contract and reignited her dwindling post Hear’Say (remember them?!) career.  Not only this but such was the power of her white bikini it was eventually sold on eBay, raising over £7000 for charity.

Others have tried and failed to re-create her bikini-in-the-shower success, but few have succeeded.  Every year the press bet on who is going to be the next girl to steal her bikini-wearing crown.  This year it was tipped to be 26-year-old model Jessica Jane Clement, however, she has recently been upstaged by another model, 28-year-old Australian Emily Scott.

With the papers pitting them against each other in a bikini showdown, it often seems the older contestants get overlooked.  So imagine our excitement when we saw gorgeous 60-year-old Lorraine Chase around the I’m a Celebrity camp site wearing a Seafolly Pin-Up Bikini from the cruise collection that has just arrived here at Simply Beach HQ!!

So the hottest ever October temperature, a whopping 29.9 degrees, was recorded in Gravesend in Kent on Saturday.

For much of the UK, the first weekend in October was spent wearing bikinis, having barbeques in the garden and cooling down with ice cream in the park, rather than dodging the drizzle and wondering where the summer went.

While it was an amazing  bonus, the freakish weather felt more than a little odd, to say the least! This October heatwave may feel strange, but the UK is no stranger to weird weather …

1. Snow in June

Snow fell on Snowdon Mountain Railway’s terminus near Hafod Eryri in June 2011. Hillwalkers who had been enjoying the summer sun as they set off were surprised to see, on reaching the summit, a blanket of snow.

2. Most Sunshine Hours

The highest number of sunshine hours in a month in England was recorded in Eastbourne, Sussex in July 1911. An astonishing 383.9 hours were recorded, which equates to 12.38 hours per day!

3. Warmest Christmas

Not quite bikini weather, but not far off. The warmest recorded temperature for Christmas Day was 15.6 celcius (about 60 fahrenheit) in Leith in 1896 (the same temperature was recorded in Killerton, Devon in 1920).

4. Hottest Years

Whilst the UK has seen freakish weather since records began, there’s no denying overall temperature is on the rise. The 5 hottest years, with mean temperatures taken across the entire year,  so far are 2006, 2007, 2003,  2004 and 2002.

Nine of the top ten are post-1990, with just 1949 being the exception (at no. 9)

5. Hugest Hailstones

The great storm of 1958 resulted in the largest hailstones ever recorded falling on the local people of Sussex. They were the size of cricket balls. Ouch.

Here’s our top 5 hidden winter sun gems. Lesser known they may be, but you’ll get spectacular scenery, plenty of cultural interest, warm weather and the place pretty much to yourself. Have a read, but don’t tell too many people!

1. Mal Pais, Costa Rica

Where?

Mal Pais (sometimes spelt Malpais) sits on the southern Nicoya Penninsula of Costa Rica, Central America. The surrounding area has grown massively as far as tourism’s concerned, but this lovely coastal village with just a smattering of restaurants and  miles of unspoilt coastline has retained its charm. The vibrant surf scene of Santa Theresa to the north and the beautiful, 1,172 hectare Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve to the south, makes Mal Pais the perfect spot to unwind, yet close enough to the action should you crave a change of scenery.

When?

Dec-April  is the dry season, where the west coast of Costa Rica sees very little rain and high temperatures.

2. Englishman’s Bay, Tobago

Where?

A veritable paradise on the northern shores of Tobago. Conjure up in your mind the ultimate idyllic tropical retreat, and you won’t be far off Englishman’s Bay. Palm fringed beach, coral reef, turquoise waters against a tropical rainforest background and a little restaurant and reachable by a dirt track. Brilliant for snorkelling and generally kicking back. This is one of the quietest and loveliest of Tobago’s beaches. 45 minutes from livlier resorts.

When?

Jan-Mar are the driest, sunniest months and temperatures average 29 degrees.

3. Mararikulam Beach, Kerala, India

Where?

In the southern Kerala district lies the jaw-droppingly beautiful Mararikulam beach.  Possibly the least touristy area of Kerala, this quiet fishing village will give you an authentic sense of Kerala life.  A few miles away is the lakes and lagoons of  Alleppey, an area of spectacular natural beauty.

When?

Jan-Feb Although this is the winter season, the rainfall is at its lowest and it’s still warm, around 28 degrees.

4. La Gomera, Canary Islands

Where?

Think of the Canary Islands and chances are you think Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and maybe Fuerteventura. What a lot of winter sun-seekers don’t realise is that there are a couple of lesser known islands that are much more laid back and unaffected by tourism.

The volcanic island of La Gomera is the second smallest of the 7 main Canary Islands. This rugged,  laid back island is really popular with hikers and the dark sand beaches are quiet and relaxed. Head to the island’s sunny south, which is known for long hours of sunshine, quiet fishing villages and banana plantations.

When?

The best time to head to La Gomera is Sep-Nov when temperatures average around 26 degrees.

5. Ambergis Caye, Belize

Where?

The largest of the hunderds of islands in the north of Belize. The barrier reef is home to some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world. The bustling, multicultural charm of the island’s town, San Pedro, with its Mexican, Caribbean and colonial influences, along with the white sand beaches and outstanding diving make this the liveliest of our five, but still a beautiful place to chill out.

When?

Mar-May is the sunniest time to go.

Scientists at King’s College London have discovered a natural compound produced in coral reefs that protects them from the sun’s damaging UV rays and they’re close to reproducing it in the lab.

The Science …

Corals need sunlight to survive, and so are exposed to high levels of UV rays, especially in the tropics. They also absorb photosynthetic algae into their bodies so they can be fed from within.

The algae forms a compound that scientists think is transferred to the coral, which modifies it into a sunscreen. The sunscreen is then passed down the food chain to the fish that feed on the coral. If the scientists can work out how it’s formed, they can recreate it in the lab.

Other Benefits …

Not only could it help protect us from damaging sun rays, but it could also be used to help provide a sustainable food source for developing countries by modifying crops so they can survive exposure to strong sunlight.

There are dietary pills on the market at the moment that are thought to offer UV protection, but they’re not regulated. The pill the King’s College scientists are looking at developing would be available by prescription only.

Don’t ditch the sun cream just yet; all going well the scientists hope to test the compound within the next couple of years. Watch this space.

If you’ve got a precious couple of weeks left this year and can’t make your mind up – snow or surf - these two centre holidays are definitely the way forward.

These breaks are also ideal if you get bored of the same thing after a week or so. Sometimes  two weeks is just too long spent doing the same thing. This way, you get to enjoy the snow whilst looking forward to some lovely chill out time on the beach.

 Where to Go …

1. Canada and Hawaii

A couple of hours north of Vancouver on the west coast of Canada, Whistler is a premier, year round ski destination. The skiing and snowboarding here is second to none and the town has a pretty impressive apres-ski scene too, with an abundance of cool restaurants and bars.

A tropical Hawaiian island is the perfect antidote to the frenetic pace of the ski slopes. If you get restless lounging around on the beach, you can swap the snowboard for a surfboard; Hawaii has some of the best surfing in the world and there’s an abundance of surf schools.

2. Chile and Brazil

Ski the relatively unspoilt and spectacular southern Chilean Andes for a few days then catch a flight over to Brazil to soak up some rays on the beaches of Buzios near Rio. If you go in August or September you’ll find the ski slopes are pretty much empty. The beaches around Rio are gorgeous, with beautiful secluded coves dotted all around.

3. Scotland and The Med

If you’re based in the UK and can’t be doing with the time and expense of travelling long haul, opt for a ski holiday in Scotland.

The area has boomed in recent years, as the five resorts – Cairngorm, Glenshee, Nevis Range, Glencoe and The Lecht – experience record snowfall.  Aviemore’s a lovely place to stay, great for families and 36 miles from Inverness.

Follow up with a quick jaunt from Inverness down to the south Med for some sun.

What to Pack …

You’ll need two very different wardrobes for both the ski and beach part of the holiday, so the trick is to travel as light as you can and take any clothing that will double up.

Ski wear – Ski clothing is getting ever more lightweight, so you don’t need to bulk out these days in order to stay insulated and warm. If you’re skiing in the spring for example, you can start with a lighweight shell and layer up as you need to.

Bikinis – We’re a bit biased being a beachwear blog, but you can get away with overdoing it slightly with the bikini packing, they don’t take up too much room (Our excuse anyway!).

Summer Clothing – The lighter the better – sarongs, pareos, cotton maxi dresses for the evening. Check out the beach resort online before you go and if it’s quite informal take clothes that will double up as beach and evening wear to save space. Less is definitely more when it comes to a two centre holiday.

Based on the assumption that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan of Shekhar Eye Research Centre in Mumbai and designer Sanjay Shah have developed the ultimate in eye wear bling – gold contact lenses encrusted with 18 diamonds. The lenses sit between 6 and 9 mm away from the cornea, holding water between the lens and eye for comfort. 

A limited edition of just less than 4,000 pairs are being made and all profits will go towards the treatment of patients with Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a skin disease that affects tear ducts, leading to loss of sight.

Could diamond lenses become the next jet-set must-have? They say it-bags are out, maybe this is the status symbol of tomorrow. Watch this space … !

There are certain swimwear brands that  A listers, celebrities and fashionistas flock to to take care of  their holiday wardrobe. This summer and last, two designer labels have notably stolen the show amongst the jet set: Melissa Odabash and Vix.

Beyonce, Cameron Diaz and Halle Berry are just three of many A listers who can’t seem to get enough of  Brazilian brand ViX. The label’s popularity has gone from strength to strength. Kelly Brook was spotted in the ViX Bia Logo bikini  (above) last summer, looking amazing as ever.

It’s easy to see why they’ve got such a high profile following. The high end brand  just seems to have a knack of creating the most gorgeous bikinis in the most inspired colourways. Detail is key, and the bikinis are finished with beading and gold tone trims that give them the edge.

Next, Melissa Odabash. As a former swimwear model, the designer spent so long in badly fitting swimsuits and bikinis, she now knows instinctively what works and what doesn’t in terms of design and fit. Celebs flock to this label.

Eva Longoria, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kelly Brook and even  future Queen Kate Middleton have been spotted wearing Melissa Odabash bikinis and beachwear. The style is kind of an opulent hippy chic, it’s relaxed but glamorous.

Gwyneth Paltrow took the Equador and St Barts away with her last month, Cindy Crawford looked incredible as ever in the Carrie Kaftan and Cameron Diaz rocked the Panama hat.

The sustainable swimwear is made from a plant starch that’s been turned into fabric and is completely compostable, taking less than 180 days to break down under soil. It’s not expensive and can be worn more than once.

There were two swimsuits on show; one with a crossover top and the skimpiest bikini bottom with nude sides and the other a more modest bikini with boyleg bottoms and halter neck.

The Haute Natured show also showed sustainable swimwear by Mae Couture, Meadow and Eco Swim, who designed environmentally friendly swimwear and beachwear using recycled materials.

The idea of sustainable swimwear is certainly appealing, as designers have long faced major challenges in finding eco-friendly alternatives to lycra and spandex, which give modern day swimsuits their clingy stretch. We look forward to seeing what the visionary Luxury Eco™  designer will come up with in the future.

Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks is in talks with swimwear manufacturers, with a view to launching her own swimwear collection and eventually plans to extend the swimwear range to lingerie and clothes.

Famous for her hourglass figure, the swimwear line will be made with curvy women in mind. She tells this month’s Lucky Magazine about how she’d love to start a swimwear range especially for curvy women.

Look forward to seeing the designs – I can imagine a structured, Mad Men, retro-inspired line working really well.

Trends

The Classique and Journey  ranges have a  distinctly 50s in influence. Timelessly chic and immensely flattering. Lustre is a modern take on the retro trend, with cut outs and ruffles featuring prominently.

Colours

After wowing judges at the event in Norfolk, 23-year-old Corrine Lee is now hoping to make it big in the fashion industry.

She was also crowned Miss Photogenic at the contest held by the Kerri Parker Academy. But her final victory was still a surprise, she said.

“Once third and second place had been called out, I sort of lost a little hope of my name being read out, so when my name was announced as first place, I literally felt like I was going to burst with excitement,” Ms Lee added.

The young mother from Gainsborough will appear on the front cover of the academy’s Bikini Babes calendar for next year.

Ms Lee has also qualified for the final round of the Model of the Year competition due to be held in November.

The former Miss Lincolnshire said she stayed fit by exercising and maintaining a healthy diet.

The N12 Bikini (called N12 because its printed on a material called Nylon 12  a waterproof Nylon) is the worlds first 3d printed bikini. There is no sewing required at all, the pieces are printed out in a couple of sections and then simply clipped together (the clips are printed also).

The great idea behind these printed clothes is that they can be printed to any size and shape, so in theory, if you scanned yourself, or provided exact measurements they could print a bikini tailored to fit you exactly. At the moment its still very much a work in progress but the company behind it will be selling them later this year for around the $200 mark.

We’ve scoured the never ending range of mobile apps to bring you our choice of the best beach apps for sunbathing this summer.

1. iBooks

iBooks is an Apple app. In the same way you buy music through iTunes, you buy books through Apple’s iBooks store. The books are laid out in a virtual bookcase and it’s simple to use, you just click the ‘store’ button above the bookcase to go to the iBooks store to buy the book you want, then read it on your device. The app is available for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.

You can change the font size and type if you want and the screen is a subtle, slightly off white colour so you don’t feel like your straining your eyes. No more lugging heavy, cumbersome books around. On the other hand, there are still plenty of refuseniks who swear by a good old fashioned book and can’t imagine moving on from paperbacks. Not for everyone, but for converts it’s a gem of an app.

2. Google Translate app

Going abroad and don’t speak the lingo? Fear not. With the Google Translate app, you can type the text you want translated (or press the ‘mic’ icon next to the text box and speak the words) to see the text on the screen or hear the words spoken back to you in the language of your choice.

This great app saves those awkward ‘fumbling through the phrase book’ scenarios of old! It also remembers your recent translations, for future reference. Useful little app that works for Android,  iPhone or iPod Touch iOS version 3 or later.

3. Doodle Jump

Be warned, this retro platform game is highly addictive! The ‘Doodle’ character automatically jumps from platform to platform and you navigate left or right by tilting the phone. To shoot from the character’s snout, you tap the phone. The cute graphics have a ‘hand drawn’ look about them. Harmless fun that’ll have you hooked. If you’re into Super Mario games, you’ll love this. Possibly meant for children, but hey.

4. Scrabble

On the subject of addictive. Scrabble. There are various Scrabble related apps out there,  both free and paid. Fist up is the classic Scrabble Tile Rack, a free app that transforms your mobile device into a scrabble board and includes a dictionary.
Words with Friends is a cross-platform app you can play against your friends on Android or Apple devices. While away many an hour on the beach or lounging round the pool. Careful, though, you might get to the end of the week and realise you hadn’t done any of the sightseeing or activities you had planned!

5. Spotify Mobile

If you’ve ever used Spotify to listen to and discover new music, you’ll know how great it is. If you’ve got a Spotify Premium account (£9.99 a month) you can get a free Spotify Mobile app that lets you sync your favourite playlists to your mobile as well as search for new music from Spotify’s 13 million song library.

 If you’ve got a free, open or unlimited account, you can download the mobile app and listen to your tracks or buy Spotify playlists.
Premium accounts are compatible with almost all handsets. If you’ve got any of the other, cheaper or free Spotify accounts, Spotify Mobile will work with an iPhone or Android. There’s nothing quite like listening to your favourite music to help you properly relax.

The hunt for the perfect bikini can take over when we’re looking for a beach holiday wardrobe, and it’s easy to forget about what we’re going to wear in the evenings. With holiday evening wear, it’s all about getting the balance right between relaxed and casual (you are on holiday, after all) and dressy enough to separate it from the clothes you’re wearing on the beach. So what should you look out for when planning your holiday evening wear?

First of all, a lot depends, of course, on where you’re going and how posh or laid back the resort you’re staying in is. If you’re splashing out on a once in a lifetime holiday to an exclusive resort, it’s a good idea to check the evening dress code before you go. We all know what it’s like to feel either under or overdressed. Makes for a very uncomfortable evening! Most resorts are fairly casual about evening wear these days, but it’s well worth checking if you want to be absolutely sure.

Accessories make the outfit…

If you want to feel relaxed but make sure your evening wardrobe is different from your daytime one, stay fairly casual with your evening clothes but accessorize them with a bit of sparkle or shine. A pretty, floaty maxi dress looks perfect teamed up with some gold or silver flip flops and lots of dangly jewellery to complete the boho chic holiday look.

A maxi dress is the ultimate in holiday evening wear. Bearing in mind it’s likely to still be warm  in the evening, you want something loose and swishy that’s not going to feel uncomfortably tight against skin that’s been out in the sun all day. It might be lovely and warm as you head out for the evening, but can turn unexpectedly cold once the sun goes down. A light shawl or scarf will do the trick to keep the cold away and will fold up nice and small in your bag so you can carry it when you’re not wearing it.

Generally, the evening dress code on holiday is more casual than it is at home, a lot looser and more floaty and free. Choose colours you know will compliment your tan in natural fabrics such as cotton, which will keep you cool and comfortable.

If you’ve been affected by the latest Icelandic ash cloud, there are some points to bear in mind before you travel.

As we write, each individual airline is making its own decisions about whether or not to fly, so it’s essential to contact them before you head off to see what the latest is.

• Contact your airline, departure airport or travel agent before you travel for their latest advice and information on the situation.
• If your flight is delayed for more than 5 hours or it is cancelled, you should be offered a full refund or alternative flight by the airline.
• Airlines will not compensate  for any other disruptions relating to accommodation or car hire or anything other than your flights.

 You can take out travel insurance that covers ash cloud disruption, following the ash cloud last April. However, if your policy does cover ash cloud disruption, you’ll only be covered if you took out the insurance before this latest cloud could have been foreseen.

Test 1 : Hold something pure white under your chin; a towel, say, or a big sheet of paper. If your skin has a slightly yellow hue, your skin tone is warm; if it’s slightly blue, your skin tone is cool. Make sure you remove any make up first, by the way, and  do the test in natural light.

Test 2 : Have a look at the underside of your arm. Has your skin got pink or blue undertones and do your veins appear blue? If so, you have a cool skin tone. Does your skin have a more yellow hue and do your veins appear more green? Then your skin tone is warm.

Test 3 : Do you suit suit gold better than silver? If so, your skin tone is warm. If silver looks better on you than gold, your skin tone is cool

Warm skin tones can be light, medium or dark, but the undertones are golden or caramel, as opposed to pink or blue.

Cool skin tones range from being very pale and porcelain with no cheek colour, to darker skin with pink or red undertones, as opposed to golden undertones. When cool skin tone tans, it has a reddy tinge, rather than a golden hue.

Warm skin tones best suit warm, natural earthy colours such as sage green, mocha, bronze, mango, burnt orange, olive green, gold, deep tomato red, dark brown, deep yellow.

Cool skin tones suit deep, rich, vivid colours such as emerald green, ruby red, raspberry, plum and sapphire blue as well as more muted tones like dusky pink, lavender and powder blue.

Once you’re armed with your basic skin tone, you can look further into it, like whether you’re summer, winter, autumn or spring, but knowing your general tone will help you choose the swimwear that’ll bring out the best in you on the beach.

1954 bikini

How times have changed since the early part of the 20th century when it was seen as thoroughly indecent for a woman to show her belly button. Although women did wear two pieces as far back as the turn of the 20th century, the modern bikini was invented in 1946 by French mechanical engineer Louis Réard and named after Bikini Island in the South Pacific.

Louis Réard’s bikini was different from the two pieces that came before it because it exposed womens navels, which was quite a shocker in those days and it didn’t go down at all well in most countries apart from France.

Catholic countries banned it and most of the rest of the world recoiled in horror at the thought of exposed belly buttons. Slowly though, the risqué bikini gained acceptance as it was seen more and more in the western world’s media.

 1950s Bikinis

Brigitte Bardot

Although the two piece bikini had been around for a few years, most women still wore one piece swimsuits at the start of the 1950s. Bikinis were still thought of as far too daring for the masses. Brigitte Bardot wore a bikini in the 1956 film ‘And God Created Woman’ which popularised it in her native France, but the rest of the world was still not prepared to expose their navels in public.
Most bikinis seen in the 50s were modest, with high waisted pants that covered the belly button.

The swinging sixties was a much more liberal decade for women and this is when bikinis became widespread and acceptable, although they were still off limits in catholic countries at the start of the decade. The infamous bikini scene featuring Ursula Andress emerging from the sea in a white bikini in Dr. No propelled what was a risque item into the mainstream and sales of bikinis went through the roof.

The 1970s was the decade when bikinis got a whole lot more sexy and revealing, with skimpy string bikinis and teeny bikini tops with maximum exposure. Farrah Fawcett in her high legged red swimsuit made one piece swimwear massive again, but bikinis never went out of fashion.

This was also the decade that saw the first topless G string bikini, and the string style bikinis got smaller and smaller throughout the ’70s and into the ’80s.



 1980s – 2011 Bikinis

Since the 1980s, when it was all about high legs and less is more, right through to today, when pretty much anything goes when it comes to bikini trends and no one style is dominant,  bikinis have never lost their appeal. Can you imagine what the women of the 1940s would have made of the super skimpy thongs of the 1980s?

There are two things that set Sarah apart from previous Seafolly models. The display of the swimwear during last week’s Australian Fashion Week in Sydney triggered widespread protests in Hindu-majority India, with angry mobs in northern Punjab state burning Australian flags, according to media reports.

India had raised the issue with the Australian ambassador in New Delhi. Indian commerce minister Anand Sharma said the issue was also raised during talks with his Australian counterpart Craig Emerson in Parliament House.

Designer Lisa Blue has apologised for any offence caused by the design of her swimwear line.

In a statement, the company said it has stopped the production of the swimwear and the offending swimsuits would not be sold.

Welcoming the latest move, Indian commerce minister Anand Sharma said that “Lakshmi is a deity which is worshipped by the Hindus and using the image on a swimwear line offended the sensitivities and the religious sentiments” of Hindus.

“The concerned company was rightly advised and has withdrawn the line and that issue is settled because by doing so, sensitivity on this matter and the religious sentiments have been respected.”

Of those questioned, over four out of five (81%) men and 66% of women said they do not have any confidence about their stomach.

The luxury Brazilian brand ViX has created a heady mix of sexy, fashion-forward swimwear and beachwear this season.

The collection that instantly caught my eye that perfectly evokes the Latin feel is the animal print ViX Toulouse bikini (right) with matching footwear and kaftan. First up the bikini – strapless with a cute ruffle at the top to match the cheeky ruffle at the back of the bikini pants. The jade coloured strip in the centre of the bikini top sets the animal print off beautifully. Team up this adorable bikini with the super-stylish ViX Toulouse flip flops, with animal print insoles and jade straps. I love these flip flops because they’re perfect for the beach but would look equally lovely with a simple pair of jeans and vest top when you get back home.  As temperatures soar to the mid 20s in the south east, it’s easy to forget it’s only April as we relish this early chance to get out our swimsuits and head for the beach.

So, if we do decide to stay in the country, we want to make sure we make the most of it, but where’s best to show off our lovely new summer clothes? We’ve picked the pick of the free beach festivals in 2011.

Paddle round the Pier 2nd & 3rd July, Brighton

Paddle, or to give it it’s full title, Paddle Round the Pier is the largest free beach festival in Europe; a seaside extravaganza with something for everyone. Brighton is a buzzy town at the best of times, but add to that land, sea and air sports demos, live music, beach bars, food stalls and the opportunity to paddle round the pier using whatever unusual water vessel you choose (the more ridiculous the better) and it makes for a  weekend to remember full of fun. Paddle is a charitable event, with proceeds raised from the Paddle round the pier event going to The Teenage Cancer Trust, Surf Relief and the RNLI.

The paddle round the pier is the world’s biggest water sport raffle. Participants receive a raffle ticket per £5 they raise in sponsorship, giving them the chance to win prizes including surfboards, wetsuits and holidays. There will be spectator sports as well as plenty of sports you can get involved in. Brighton is packed full of fashionable al fresco eateries and trendy bars; can’t think of a better place to make the most of some gorgeous new beachwear, so grab your sun hat, kaftan and shades and head this fashionable Sussex town for a couple of days of beach side fun.

1. Ursula Andress white bikini – Dr. No (1962)

Who can forget Ursula Andress emerging from the sea as Honey Ryder in the 1962 James Bond movie Dr. No, with a shell in her hand and a knife at her hip? This now infamous white bikini was an obvious influence on the one Halle Berry wore as she stepped out of the surf as Jinx Johnson in another Bond film Die Another Day, 40 years later. This classic has been a definite influence on so many swimwear designers over the last 50 years, none more so than today.
The wide set shoulder straps and supported cups on the bikini top and thick belt on the bottoms make  this the most flattering and figure enhancing bikini; its cult status is no surprise.

The  Freya Magic soft tri bikini (pictured above) is a flattering bikini, perfect for that Ursula Andress beach goddess look, or how about and a red hot Sunseeker Hawaiian halter top bikini (left) for more of a Halle Berry.

The fab thing about both of these designs is that they miraculously manage to cover all the right places whilst still looking stunning.  The bikini bottoms may be big, but they’re bang on trend too.  This is the most fashionable, wearable swimwear for all shapes and sizes.

2. Elizabeth Taylor’s white swimsuit – Suddenly Last Summer (1959)

The late, great movie star and style icon Elizabeth Taylor showed how the simplest swimsuits are often the most striking. This film from the late 1950s depicts a time of classic, understated glamour. One of cinema’s most famous movie stills shows the actress kneeling in the surf in a plain white swimsuit with oval cut out under the cleavage, effortlessly cool, staking her claim as the ultimate movie siren with a star power that many would argue has never been matched.

3. Angelina Jolie’s black bikini – Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life (2003)

Again, proof if ever it was needed that simple can be the most effective. This is a style you just can’t go wrong with, its an understated design classic. You could wear this design in 2011 or 2021 and it would still look timelessly cool.

4. Bo Derek’s swimsuit –  ’10′  (1979)

Everything about this look says late 1970s. Bo Derek running along the sand was iconic for two reasons. First, the hair that sparked a massive trend – plaited in cornrows with beaded trims – then that swimsuit. The late 70s was a time when it became more acceptable to bare more on the beach, and Bo Derek did just that with this skimpy light brown number, instantly propelling her to cult sex symbol status. This beach scene has become an iconic one in the history of film.

Braid your hair and look to Gottex for the ultimate 10 look. Be warned – most definitely not for the shy and retiring!

5. Cameron Diaz’s white bikini – Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003)

This skimpy white bikini with ties at the side shows a surfboard carrying Cameron Diaz as the epitome of health and vibrance. This bikini is cute and carefree, depicting a laid back surf vibe. This is again a classic design, with the side ties harking to the 70s. This is a look that’s huge this summer and it can be widely found amongst our swimwear brands.

Cyprus came out really well, taking two top ten spots, with the lively resort of  Ayia Napa at number one and the more family-friendly Protaras at number three.

Two of the top ten destinations are in Greece; Skiathos, the small island with sixty beaches at number two and the super-stylish resort of Mykonos at number four. Mallorca, Spain took two of the top ten places, with family favourite Alcudia at number seven and historic Calvia at number nine.

First up on our wishlist is the strapless, striped beach dress with detachable halter-neck strap. It comes in either ice blue and black or monochrome stripes, with an elasticated bandeau bust. 2011 is an eclectic year for beachwear, with something for just about everyone, but there are a few strong trends we’re seeing coming through. Here’s our pick of the best of swimwear and beachwear trends this year.

1. 1950′s Retro Pin-Up Girl

This is a major trend that’s inspiring most of our favourite swimwear and beachwear designers this season. What’s really great about the retro 1950s pin-up girl look is it’s both high-fashion and immensely flattering, especially if you’re naturally curvy. The retro 50′s pin-up look is all about creating the perfect hourglass figure; cinched in waists and accentuated busts and bottoms.

Colours are classic; red, blue, black and white, with contrasting coloured trims, and prints are bold florals, polka dots or stripes. Pin-up girl bikini tops are generally either strapless or halterneck and bikini bottoms come high waisted with low-cut legs.

Red or Dead have fully embraced the trend this season, with some gorgeous 1950′s inspired swimsuits and bikinis. Their one pieces perfectly encapsulate this bygone era, with decorative buttons and piped trims.

A classic example of 1950′s glamour is this Jets by Jessika Allen Classique bikini which is effortlessly chic and incredibly flattering. Put the finishing touches on your poolside screen siren look with a pair of cats eye sunglasses and ruby red nails and lips.

2. Ruffles

3. 1970s Hippy Chic

We’re sure in for a retro summer this year. As well as the pin-up girl look of the 1950′s, the more laid back, hippy vibe of the ’70s is making a massive comeback this summer. Wide legged trousers, button-through denim skirts, wide brimmed straw hats, oversized sunglasses, kaftans, head scarves, maxi dresses, cute little halterneck tops and platform sandals. The trend continues on to the beach and poolside with the free ‘n’ easy feeling reflected in swimwear and beachwear.

The 1970′s was the decade that saw the first string bikinis. Triangle cups with halterneck spaghetti straps and side-tie bikini bottoms were huge in the late ’70s, along with more modest halternecks with wider straps and cute ties at the cleavage.

You’ll be spoilt for choice this season, with side-tie string bikinis making a big splash right across our brands, as well as halterneck bandeau tops with wider bikini bottoms and tie-front one piece swimsuits. Cute retro prints, ditsy florals and candy stripes complete the look.

She said: “I actually didn’t ask her advice on this one. Victoria’s doing very high-end, high-fashion, and what she’s done is brilliant. But she’s always been like that.

The Indian Ocean islands are an increasingly popular choice with travellers thanks to their tropical setting, which offers the perfect environment for adventure activities.

For those after a quieter life, fishing and bird watching are also popular and can be enjoyed best between April and October, according to Nadine Hallak, of Cheapflights Media.

Planning ahead is the key to making a Seychelles holiday the trip of a lifetime, according to Ms Hallak.

Arranging flights is easiest for the main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, with prices depending on the time of travel, she said.

Some 174,529 holidaymakers made the trip to Seychelles last year, according to the country’s tourism board.

This would be a fabulous idea of only more of us had servants.  It probably wouldn’t be too difficult to make such a contraption but it would be rather arduous to get it up and down a beach without help.  It’s therefore highly unlikely that anyone but a very rich or very modest and desperate person would attempt it.  After all it is so much easier to not actually be seen in a bikini by either not going swimming at all or not wearing one.  Perhaps that is the way forward to getting a revival of the Victorian bathing machines; the shocked and horrified onlookers who would be racing to the edge of the sea with towels whilst averting their eyes from the rather horrific and unsightly sighting of the naked body of someone who should really be covered up.

Even if the lady does look fine enough in their bikini or swimsuit, for many women they just can‘t comprehend that themselves and have a low self body image that can almost cripple them from being seen in anything revealing or fitted.  Research over 10 years ago found that upto 8 out of 10 women will not be happy with what they see in the mirror with more than half of them not seeing themselves as others do.  The same cannot be said for men who appear to either be indifferent or even pleased with how they see themselves.  The difference between the sexes for the way they consider their self body image seems to start from a young age since in one study normal-weight girls were more worried about their appearance than obese boys.

Women who take part in sport are found to have more positive considerations of their self image and a greater acceptance of the natural body shape leading to the theory that exercise therapy could be of assistance in those with low self body image.  Men taking part in sport also saw their body image more positively than those men who did none.

So it’s seems to be clear that in order to be comfortable with your self body image enough to cope with being seen in a bathing costume, such as trunks, swimsuit or a bikini, more sport is required.  One of the best forms of exercise for someone new to it or out of shape is swimming and so we get back to Catch 22; How to swim in order to feel better without being seen before you feel you look better?

A marvellous invention if only someone would make it is for a bikini or swimsuit to be put on that can inflate to form a light weight equivalent of a bathing machine, a suit-bather, fitting from neck to ankles.  A swimmer could then walk serenely and get into the water at their own pace, whereupon the suit-bather would deflate as they entered the water, re-inflating on their exit.  Surely it must be possibly with so many advances in swimsuit and tent technology?

The Hangover actor will show off his feminine side in the November issue of Vanity Fair’s Swimsuit Calendar.

Sporting a one-piece fuchsia swimsuit and basking in the sun on the beach, Galifianakis will join the list of models for the magazine shoot, which has previously seen the likes of Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima and Gisele Bundchen.

The Youth in Revolt actor will also change into feminine costumes for five sensual poses, with Sam Jones as his photographer.

Zach Galifianakis, who will be back as Alan Garner in The Hangover 2, is currently in the thick of the film’s production. The movie takes place in Bangkok and L.A, according to the director Todd Phillips.

The Hangover 2 will star Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and Bradley Cooper and will be released in 2011.

The 52-year-old Like a Virgin singer and her 13-year-old daughter, Lourdes, recently launched her Material Girl clothing line, and both are keen to add to its range of products, according to UK-based entertainment webzine Contactmusic.

A Material Girl spokesperson said: “We’re focused on rolling Material Girl out into additional categories, including swim and intimates and expanding the dress assortments. We launched footwear with ballet flats this season, but we’re going to expand into a full footwear collection going forward. It’s all under discussion.”

Madonna previously admitted she loves working on the clothing range with her daughter, but revealed they do not always see eye to eye.

She said: “”I think we complement each other but we do disagree on a few things. I wouldn’t have worn this flannel shirt thing but she looks good in it so what are you going to do. I’m a very proud mother.”

Since then, Spencer Pratt has cancelled his plans to release a sex-tape of him and Heidi, turning down £5 million from an adult entertainment company, reports said.

The pair, who were married in 2008 on The Hills expect to receive their divorce in February next year.

Last year, designer Jia Crens set tongues of animal rights activists and vegetarian groups wagging when she was pictured at a party is a dress made from bacon.

Stars such as 65-year-old Dame Helen Mirren have recently been spotted sporting a two-piece, dubbed the grankini, boosting its popularity amongst older women.

And with advances in swimsuit technology there are now more bikinis tailored to suit the more mature figure.

In the same way that a bra offers support, bikinis now have built-in mesh and gauge wires and wider straps to shape the bust. The waistline on the bottoms has also been raised.

Over the last two years sales of the increasingly popular grankinis have soared by 118 per cent, according to major retailer Debenhams, with rising sales driven by women in their fifties and sixties.

Sasha Nagalingham, the store’s swimwear buyer, said: “A full costume on an older lady instantly says ‘granny’; but a supportive, well-proportioned bikini is less ageing and accentuates rather than hides natural shape.”

In the past few years 71 per cent of women aged between 50 and 65 have ditched the ‘granny-like’ one-piece for a daring new grankini.

Bikini Bash 2010 will be held on August 28 at Chiringuitos Del Sol on Campoamor beach, Orihuela Costa.

As well as the all-important official count and photo shoot, the event will include music and entertainment from 4pm until 9pm.

Previous attempts to take the title have met with mixed success. While one show attracted more than 2,000 people, just 43 women showed up at a separate event in Southend, Essex.

Organisers say they will also attempt to break the record for the largest number of women walking around a set circuit while wearing bikinis, currently held by Japan with 323.

Conception Island

Conception Island is one of the Bahamas’ far-out islands which dots the eastern reaches of the archipelago and the only people that know about it are sailors and scuba divers who sail out on there liveboards or long-range day boats. The sheer coral wall which is one of the most dramatic underwater sights in the world is what attract the scuba divers and snorkellers. There are two, long, pristine beaches which offer a rewarding sight for those who make it here, as well as a prime nesting area for endangered turtles. The whole island, including neighbouring Booby Cay, is a protected national park. The water that surrounds Conception Island is as clear and clean as you will find.

Petit Tabac

In the film, Pirates of the Caribbean, the slightly crazy but loveable Captain Jack Sparrow relates the horrors of of being stranded on a small desert island. He’s later dumped on the same spot with Elizabeth Swann, who soon discovers that Sparrow’s first visit involved nothing more horrible than drinking rum on a perfect beach – not far from the modern days of a Caribbean holiday. The director picked Petit Tabac for this scene, undoubtedly for it’s soft, deep sand which is crowned by a stunning shock of green palms; one of St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ dazzling diamonds within the Tobago Cays National Marine Park.

Sandy Island

Storms and the currents constantly move there way through Sandy Island. One year the wind will topple palms and waves will scoop away the sand, and the next year (or even the next week), visitors will discover a newly formed stretch of beach, and the lagoon there may have changed shape.  What doesn’t change is the long stretch of sand which leads to a fabulous reef for snorkellers to explore. You can see the lush green hills of Carriacou not far across the channel. Snorkellers can carry themselves with a few kicks over a deep drop-off where they will be able to watch large rays and pelagic fish pass them by.

Mopion

Mopion, possibly one of the most picturesque beaches, with a dollop of sand in the middle, surrounded by beautiful clear waters has made appearance on several magazine covers and it’s no surprise really. Photographers who get the chance to visit St. Vincent and the Grenadines find there most perfect beach shots here. There’s not a single palm tree on Mopion, the only shade you will find here is from a thatched umbrella. A nearby private-island resort, Petit St. Vincent will be found setting up beach picnics along the sand for their guests, while yachties and those staying on Matreau or Union Island use Mosion as a snorkelling and tanning day trip.

Isla Saona

Isla Saona is a part of the Parque Nacional del Este in the Dominican Republic, where no hotels or resorts will ever be found on it’s stunning palm-lined beaches. However, Saona’s not quite a deserted island, it has a couple of small fishing settlements and holiday makers from the Bayahibe, La Romana and Punta Cana resorts can visit a small village where they will find casual restaurants and a group of shacks full with Art Naif. Somehow, the development doesn’t detract from the natural beauty and attractions of the island, like fantastic snorkelling, miles of pure sandy beaches and a submerged sandbar covered with a universe of starfish. It could be because it is the Dominican Republic and it would seem abnormal to find anywhere there where music isn’t playing and someone isn’t at the ready to teach you merengue.

On holiday with a female friend, Caprice is apparently quiet about her new “ordinary Irish man”.

In a recent interview with the Irish Herald, she said: “There may be someone on the scene. He’s not famous. He’s just an ordinary guy. He’s not a sportsman or an actor or a celebrity of any sort. That’s all I’m saying.”

The 28-year-old tennis champion said she always wanted to have the same body as her sister Venus, but accepted that she ‘wasn’t like’ her sibling when she reached the age of 23.

Serena, who will appear in the magazine’s August issue, certainly appears to be more at ease with her body image now as she put on an Eres-designed swimsuit for the photo shoot.

The star, who split up from her boyfriend Common in April, spoke about the differences between her body and her sister’s. She said: “She’s totally different. I’m super curvy.

“I have big boobs and this massive butt. She’s tall and she’s like a model and she fits everything.”

Serena has previously appeared in swimwear for Sports Illustrated, slipping into a white bikini for a shoot in February 2003.

The star, who is now more accepting of her body shape, said that when she was growing up she was always “wanting to look like her sister” or “wanting to be” her sister and trying to get into her clothes, but she realised that after a while she could not.

She added: “But it’s fine. Now I’m obviously good, but it’s a weird thing.

“Since I don’t look like every other girl, it takes a while to be okay with that. To be different. But different is good.”

According to fashion designer Youlia Nageytseva, the main theme this year is polka dots and stripes in black and white, while the addition of multicoloured leaf, paisley and abstract designs has created an eclectic mix.

The company’s sales and operations director Chris Karanikki said: “Our new collection is beautifully designed, made to last and fantastic value for money. The designs are inspired by current style trends and not merely a re-hash of last year’s collections.”

Suzie May said despite being a relative late-comer this season, the range’s price point will ensure there is little competition.

Marketing director Nick Gonnella said: “No other online retailer is selling such a unique and current swimwear range anywhere near our price range.

It’s a fair bet that you’ve already heard about the horrific oil spill in the Gulf Coast, and how much damage the spill is doing to the wildlife, but most folks are unaware of just how much the spill is affecting the coastline and beaches.

It’s thought that many holiday makers who are heading off to Gulf Coast, the Caribbean and surrounding areas may be in for quite the surprise. The problem is, the oil has forced many beaches to close as they are currently unfit for sun lounging and swimming. So you’re beach and bikini holiday may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

It is thought that the spill may have an affect on tourism in these areas and many holiday makers are heading elsewhere to avoid disappointment. And some have decided to cancel their trips altogether.
Even if you do manage to find a beach that is open, it’s not a great idea to spend too much time in the water. Not only could the oil ruin your favourite swimwear, but it can be extremely dangerous for you health.

If you’re packed and ready to go away, and you don’t want the oil spill to ruin your holiday, then why not spend some time around the pool. You’ll still be able to wear your new bikinis, but at least you know that you’ll be safe in water.

Because of the tides, the amount of oil keeps changing, and more and more beaches are being affected. Where some will only have small amounts of spillage, others are being overrun with oil and tar balls, as well as strong odours and fumes. The clean up crews are working around the clock, and many of the beaches and coastal areas have already been cleaned, but there is still a long way to go.

Remember, if you see a double red flag on your beach, then you cannot enter the water. Many of the beaches are still open to the public for sunbathing, but be sure to check before you head out for the day, otherwise you won’t get a change to test out your new swimwear.

The 21-year-old previously modelled for underwear firm Ultimo, with the firm forced to deny rumours that the photoshoot pictures had been digitally enhanced. They removed her from the £100,000-per-year deal after naked pictures of Miss Geldof were put on the internet by US artist Ben Mills. She denied having a one-night stand with Mr Mills.

In 2007, Miss Geldof, who had a brief marriage to rock star Max Drummey, was voted into FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World rundown. She is currently dating horror film director Eli Roth, 38.

Charlie’s Angels actress Cameron Diaz displayed her toned physique when she stepped out in a tiny blue bikini while on holiday in Maui, Hawaii.

The 37-year-old, who will soon hit the cinema screens alongside Tom Cruise in Knight and Day, puts her enviable bikini figure down to healthy eating and regular exercise.

But unlike many women who are forced to diet to achieve a toned body, Cameron admits that she loves nothing better than eating a good meal.

She said in a recent interview: “Food is one of my biggest pleasures. I love to eat. I love to cook. I love to feed people.”

The actress also admitted that it took her a while to learn to like exercising and outdoor activities, but discovered the benefits while training for a film role.

She told Self magazine: “Before Charlie’s Angels, I never exercised. Not a day! I always associated it with pain and discomfort – something you do if you have to.

“Then, for the movie, we worked out eight hours a day, five days a week for three months, and I learned what it felt like to be strong.

“Now that I know how that feels, I never want to be too far away from it.”

Seafolly chief executive Anthony Halas said: “The next stage is to build the brand so that we have people asking for Seafolly.” Halas says the UK market is unique as most consumers buy own-brand swimwear and have a lack of recognition of branded swimwear.
“Seafolly’s first job is to raise awareness of the brand and convert own-brand sales into branded sales by making Seafolly more available.”

The brand’s annual advertising campaign in Australia signifies the start of the summer, where it enjoys a dominant market share of between 35% and 40%.

There has been a 400 per cent increase in the number of searches on the internet for the skimpy trunks in the past half year, compared to the same period the previous year, according to price comparison website Ciao.

The skimpy look could be popular among women as well as men this summer according to the findings, which revealed that searches for bikinis on the internet are also up 100 per cent on 2009.

Based on more than 6,000 internet searches, the research suggested that, perhaps because of the dismal winter, self-tanning products were also in demand.

Brands such as Fake Bake, St Tropez and l’Oreal have proven popular in recent years. Ciao UK said there was an increase of five per cent in fake tanning searches in the past year.

Tom Hyde, of Microsoft-owned Ciao, said: “Everyone wants to look their best on the beach and clearly Brits have never been prouder to get their kit off.

“People are buffing themselves up so they are tanned and smooth from top to toe and are celebrating by looking for the tightest, tiniest and most revealing swimwear out there.”

Around 97% of bathing locations had “excellent” water quality, compared with 76% a decade ago, tests conducted by the EA found.

However, the results could change over the summer with more rains, as the tests took into consideration early season samples, the agency said.

The agency conducts water tests at 494 locations every week to measure pollution levels between May and September each year.

The highest quality tests have been cleared by 479 sites so far this year. While 14 other beaches were rated as “good”, Staithes in North Yorkshire received a “poor” grading as it failed to meet mandatory standards due to high levels of bacteria from sewage and livestock waste.

The EA said the good results were achieved due to the recent good weather, pollution-reduction actions and tighter regulation of sewer overflows.

It said water companies were investing £4bn in environmental improvements to help raise bathing water quality even more over the next five years to meet more stringent EU standards coming into force in 2015.

Among the highlights was a girl relaxing in a bath of peonies and two Australian models in bikinis who posed in a spa in the Trailfinders Australian Garden, which later received a visit from the Queen.

Guests were also greeted by a performance artist clad only in body paint and a thong.

The competition to find the best garden at the show has now begun, with 15 show gardens, 21 small gardens and hundreds of exhibits for the judges to choose from.

Gardeners competing to be top dog at the west London site have had difficult conditions to contend with this year, from late frosts to extreme heat.

Katrina Hodge, the army lance corporal who won the contest in 2009, argued that the swimwear round was outdated.

From this year, contestants in the national pageant will compete in sports wear and eco rounds, reflecting what are considered to be more modern attitudes.

Katrina, 23, said: “In a world of size zero models it’s not a particularly good image to give out to girls that you’ve got to be stick thin.

“I met girls who were all dieting and worrying about the bikini round and I just thought it’s not a good image for girls to have.”

The swimwear round has been a tradition since the beginning of the contest, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this August. Its current director Angie Beasley said: “In the 50s, the entire competition was in swimwear and called a bathing beauty pageant.

“It’s that idea we are trying to get away from – the girls have to be talented. There’ll be a sports round where they engage in physical activities, and an eco section where they wear recycled clothes to show women can be beautiful in things other than designer labels.”

This year’s winner will be automatically put forward to compete in Miss World in Vietnam in November.

Sun Cream

Obvious, I know, but this is one of the most important items you will need for your beach holiday. Always pick a SPF to suit your skin type. Take enough with you so that it can be re-applied as much as is needed. A lip balm with sun block in it is also a good idea.

Cover- Ups/ Protective Clothing

Sun Cream on it’s own is not adequate protection for long periods in the sun, especially in southern climates where the risk to burning is higher. A wide-brimmed hat that protects the face and back of the neck are great. Other beach clothes like dresses, t-shirts, shorts and kaftans are ideal for covering up and won’t make you too hot.

Swimsuits

You should take at least two bikinis with you so that one is always dry. I would also suggest packing different styles for different activities, you will obviously want a more supportive and reliable suit for water-sports than what you would for sunbathing. Different designs will help to minimize tan lines. Don’t forget to pack ample of swim nappies for young children.

Footwear

We all take our sandals and flip-flops, but beach shoes like the Tusa Beach Walker, are also a necessity for a beach holiday. If there are stones, or sharp objects underwater, beach shoes will prevent any mishaps and keep you quite sturdy on your feet too.

Beach Towels

Each person in your group should have their own towel, it’s no fun sharing one wet towel between four of you. You want to make sure it dries overnight for the next day at the beach or around the pool.

Cooler

If you’re planning on taking snacks and drinks to the beach with you, pack a small cooler. Not only will it keep your items nice and cool, but it will prevent bugs, sand and birds from feasting on your lunch.

Water

Bottled water is a must, not something you should pack in your suitcase, but something you should buy out there. Constant exposure to the sun and lots of activity rapidly dehydrates the body. Water will refill your body’s water reserves and prevent sun stroke, heat frustration and tiredness.

Bucket & Spade

You can’t head to a sandy beach without sandcastle building tools! A bucket and spade and other moulding tools will keep the kids entertained for hours.

Toys

Great toys to pack for the beach are inflatables, like balls, lilos and rings. Other toys for kids improving their swimming are toys which sink and they have to retrieve. Don’t forget armbands for the younger children that haven’t yet built their confidence in the water.

For out of the water fun, take a frisbee or volley ball if you have room in your case. For long journeys, don’t forget hand-held video games, MP3 players, books and magazines.

Water Sports Items

Take your mask, snorkel and fins set with you to enjoy a bit of snorkelling while you’re away. Boogie boards are also great, but don’t worry, you can normally buy them out there as it’s unlikely you’re going to want to pack one in your suitcase.

Underwater Camera

You can have great fun with your underwater camera, capture all those fun times on the beach and in the sea!
Dry Bags

A waterproof bag or two will help keep valuable items like phones, cameras, cash, keys and I.D safe from water ruining them. A couple of plastic or zippered bags are also handy for wet clothes and easy disposal of rubbish.

After-Sun

After-Sun gel is a must for sunburn. It provides cooling relief and helps to heal the burn. Some after-suns can also help to maintain your summer tan for longer too.

Beach Bag

A large beach bag with numerous pockets and compartments is a necessity for keeping all your day-to-day items together. I would suggest getting a hard-wearing bag like a canvas bag. Mesh bags are also good as they prevent sand gathering in the bottom of them.

Insect Repellent

Don’t let bug bites ruin your holiday. Take a insect repellent spray, wipes or cream and apply it before going out, especially in the evening when they seem to hang around.

A poll by Debenhams found that people choosing to holiday at home typically preferred to cover up even though 91% would wear a bikini on foreign shores.

The department store said the growth of less-revealing swimwear options had helped fuel the contradiction, with sales increasing by 112% when compared to bikinis.

Sasha Nagalingham, a buyer for the company, said: “Despite a reputation for leaving inhibitions at the door in places like Alicante and Antigua, traditional British reserve takes over in Bognor and Brighton – its geographical modesty.

“The return of the staycation has simultaneously sparked a return to Victorian values. Judging by sales of the skirted swimsuit, British beaches will look like 50s picture post-cards this summer.”

The investigation revealed that Blackpool had sold more units of bikini alternatives than anywhere else, making it the most modest town in the UK, closely followed by Aberdeen.

The 25 finalists of the Miss London competition, scheduled to be held on May 25, will model sportswear rather than swimwear, at Miss Hodge’s request.

Sportswear for the contestants will be provided by the Kings Road Sporting Club and evening wear will be designed by Karen Karmody.

According to Miss Hodge, who has taken a break from her Army career for her year as Miss England, removing the bikini round from the beauty contest would prove the competition is about “real women”.

The present Miss England, who served in the Adjutant Generals Corps, said: “It’s not just Miss London, it’s going to be Miss England as well that’s not going to have the bikini round.

“The reason is, in a world of size zero models it’s not a particularly good image to give out to girls that you’ve got to be stick thin.

Miss Hodge, who has participated in Miss England competition for two consecutive years, said: “We want to promote that Miss England is more of a real woman, a realistic role model.”

Sunblock

This may sound like a obvious one, but pack a waterproof sunblock that at least has a 30 SPF. Look for trusted labels that have a UVA and UVB protection. Always remember to re-apply, especially if they have been in the sea.

Swim Nappies & Wipes

Swim nappies are a must for the beach. Disposable swimming nappies are great because they can be thrown away and are very convenient for the beach. Don’t forget the baby wipes, not only are the great for cleaning tots bottoms, but they’re great for cleaning messy hand and faces after lunch or playing in the sand!

Beach Cover-Ups

T-Shirts and Sun Hats with a SPF 50 factor are highly recommended by paediatricians because they continue to block the sun’s rays. Even when they’re wet they will block the sun, unlike some creams and blocks which can wash off and need to be re-applied.

Plastic Bags

Not a necessity, but come in very handy. They can be used to store opened snacks and food that you don’t want sand or bugs to land on. They will also come in handy to dispose dirty nappies in.

Talcum Powder

Relieves sweaty and sticky body parts when applied and if you shake some on yours or your child’s hands before eating it will help to get rid of the sand.

Snacks

Both you and your little one will work up an appetite running around on the sand and splashing about in the sea, so make sure you take some easy to eat snacks with you that you will both enjoy.

Beach Toys

Toddlers love the sand; they’ll happily sit and play in it for ages. You don’t have to spend loads on getting lots of toys, you’re the one that will have to lug them too and fro. Just make sure you have the classics like a bucket and spade and they will love it!

Towels

Make sure you have enough towels, one each. Having to share wet and sandy towels isn’t fun.

Beach Bag

When choosing a beach bag, make sure it’s big enough to fit everything in. Look for a bag that is durable, and suited for the outdoors such as cotton or canvas bags. Mesh is popular too as it’s useful for storing sandy toys and wet clothes.

Extras

You may want to consider taking a few extras like a parasol or beach tent to shield the children from the sun, should they need it. Chairs are great for the elder members, or on stony beaches. If your child is potty training, it might be worth getting yourself a travel potty. Don’t forget to take a digital camera to capture all the best bits of the day.

Town officials recently passed new regulations prohibiting beach users from revealing more than local beach users would ordinarily like by donning the skimpy suits.

The ban covers anyone using Kure Beach on Pleasure Island in North Carolina from wearing thong bathing suits after town officials took action when a visiting couple rang ahead to ask whether there were any specific rules about wearing thongs on the beach.

Mayor Dean Lambeth said the new rules have been introduced to protect the “small town atmosphere” on Pleasure Island, but admitted that the blanket ban could leave the local authority open to a legal challenge.

“You can do what you want to in your own space but for public decency, keep it off the public beach,” he said.

“Everything we do is family oriented. We like the small town atmosphere.

“You can file a suit – the way this country is leaning so far left, it wouldn’t surprise me,” he said. “They want to challenge it? They want to spend the money? Go for it.”

1. Bamburgh, Northumberland

This beach is beautiful but even the most annoyed stranded travelers will find themselves looking landward at Bamburg beach rather than seaward because of the fabulous castle overlooking the beach. While there are numerous castles in Northumberland, the view of this castle from the beach is absolutely awesome. Plus, the beach consists of sand dunes backing an expansive golden sand beach.
Where: Take the unclassified road which links Freshwater East with Stackpole; then simply follow the signs for Stackpole Quay.

2. Blackpool Sands, Devon

Whlie waiting for your flight to be rescheduled, you could enjoy the Blackpool Sands beach on the south coast of Devin which  is privately owned and family-oriented. It’s not exactly Southern California — but with no flights out of the UK, this is as close as you will get for a while. There’s a safe swimming area complete with lifeguards on patrol during summer months and a point to collect your lost child. The beach consists of fine pebbles but a sandy area has been added for those who love sand between the toes and sandcastle building. There’s a freshwater paddling pool which might be the best spot for small children.

3. Lowestoft Beach, Suffolk

You could mope around, letting the absence of a scheduled flight home trash your awesome vacation, or you could make the best of it while enjoying Suffolk, the eastern-most beach no the British Isles. You can even be first to catch the rays and first to get wet in the water. Lowestoft Beach has great bathing water, calm waves, a gently sloping beach shelf and lifeguards during months of summer. This family-oriented resort is busy, but wtih two piers, Claremont Pier and South Pire, a sandy beach with groynes, and a long promenade running behind the beach, there’s space for your and plenty of activities and attractions, both indoors and out.

4. New Quay, Wales

Perhaps there are better opportunities to see dolphins in the Bahamas or other Carribean Islands, but while you’re waiting for a flight to get there, your odds are pretty good at New Quay. Just take a short bus ride from the main airports in the UK and you’ll find a great beach to enjoy without even having to rent a car. While it may be not surf heaven, you’re more likely to see dolphins in these waters than in any other part of the UK. Based in New Quay, the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, operates boat excursions during summer, and you have a good odds of seeing dolphins, harbour porpoises, and grey seals. Trips fares are from £16 for adults and £8 for children aged 12 years and under.

6. Bedruthan Steps, Cornwall

Stranded travelers hoping the volcanic ash settles soon can travel just a few miles east of New Quay and escape the crowds at the Bedruthan Steps. Speaking of volcanos, this beach ironicly consists of volcanic rock stacks, rising from the beach like small mountains, providing a wondreful venue  as you walk along the fine white sand along the rugged coastline. Be sure to be cautious of waves and strong undercurrent here and not that swimming is not permitted for this safety reason. The National Trust has created paths on the cliff tops to limit visitor-caused damage The name of this beach refers to the steep, treacherous, rough-cut steps which allowed beach access in Victorian times. Even today, the steps are steep, so be cautious is you have health issues.

10. Portland Harbour, Dorset

While stranded in the UK, whether trying to get to Europe, the United States, or elsewhere, have some watersports fun in Portland Harbour. There’s scuba diving, kayaking, kite surfing, sailing, and windsurfing available. During the 2012 London Summer Olympics, this will be the venue of the sailing events hosted by the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, so you might want to include a sailing lesson since all levels are available.

Visit the imposing ramparts of 19th-century Fort Corblets which overlook the eastern end of a sandy, sheltered bay. 14. Rhossili Bay, Swansea

For adventure to get your mind off your travel connection woes cause by the volcanic ash spreading from Iceland, venture out to this steep path down to the crescent-shaped Rhossill Bay, offering breathtaking views across the Atlantic Ocean. The walk is rather difficult which cause this beach to be frequently quite. At the south end, the mile-long tidal island of Worm’s Head rises from the water like a beast from the sea. Be sure not ot miss the wooden ribs of the shipwreck Helvetia, destroyed in 1887, and the remains of the City of Bristol which was sunk in 1840. The Sun newspaper said Next, Tammy, Tesco and Peacocks stocked similar items, adding that Primark was also selling underwear aimed at young people bearing the phrase “You’ve scored”.

“We will look into the issue,” Next chief executive Simon Wolfson said. “If anything needs changing we will do it immediately.”

Peacocks boss Richard Kirk added: “We have started checking every product top make sure everything is appropriate.”

Tesco, Tammy and Primark pledged similar action.

Primark was yesterday forced to act after calls for a boycott of its stores by an organisation which helps child victims of abuse and following criticism from Conservative leader David Cameron.

Child protection consultant Shy Keenan of The Phoenix Chief Advocates, which called for the boycott, welcomed the chain’s decision to remove the padded bikini tops.

Mr Cameron, who branded the sale “disgraceful” in an interview with BBC London Radio said he was “delighted” the bikini top had been withdrawn.

1. Portuguese Man-of-War Jellyfish

Not a true jellyfish, the Portuguese Man-of-War is a siphonophore – a colony of organisms living together. Found mainly far out in the sea, it can be seen swarming or floating with thousands of organisms grouped together. Dermochelys coriacea, commonly called leatherback sea turtles, feed on these sea creatures. In fact, it is their favourite food. Sharks can be attracted to the turtles and mistake a human swimmer or surfer as a turtle. It’s safer on the beach if you see jellyfish in the water. Nematocystic toxin from the Portuguese man-of-war is considered to be ¾ as powerful as that of a cobra.

2. Marbled Cone Snail

The Marble Cone snail shell looks beautiful but the sea creature inside is deadlier than any other possible beach inhabitant listed here. One drop of venom could kill 20 or more people. Found in warm, tropical salt water, if you find one, don’t touch it.  A sting immediately begins showing symptoms or the onset may be days later. The intense pain, numbness, swelling and tingling-feeling can result, in severe cases, muscle paralysis, respiration shut down and vision changes or death. It is fortunate that only 30 people have been killed by envenomation because there is still no anti-venom available.

3. Sea Snakes

Ocean-going trawlers are where most sea snake bites occur since the snake can be hauled in along with desirable catch. Most people think these sea creatures can’t bite but their short fangs, less than 4.5 mm can still pierce human skin. They are also capable of opening their mouths wide enough to consume a huge prey so even a small sea snake can grab a human thigh.

4. Common Cone Shells

The marine snail which inhabits cone shells are found in reefs all around the globe. Their victim-immobilizing venom cause their pray to become paralyzed. Over time, there have been 30 or more recorded human deaths from this venom. Fortunately, medical research has found this venom very helping in pharmacology research. However, there has yet been no antivenom developed for the cone snail stings.

5. Stonefish

The Dornorn, commonly called the “stonefish” is among the most venomous beach creatures on the planet. Named for its appearance, this fish’s coloration makes easy to mistake for a real stone when wading. Mainly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, it inhabits shallow waters in the tropics. The dorsal fins contain a row of toxic-filled spines. Those who have experienced the envenomation and lived describe it as the worst pain known to mankind. It can cause shock, paralysis and tissue death. Medical attention must be reached immediately. It can cause death to people within a couple of hours. It’s sole beneficial use is as an extremely tasty, okoze sushi, eaten in Japan.

6. Box Jelly Fish

Box jellyfish, known commonly as sea wasp, is probably the most dangerous beach creature listed here. The creature’s tentacles contain tiny nematocysts packed with powerful venom which stick to victims.  Considered by most the most horrible creature to be stung by, victims have been known to pass out in pain yet continue screaming from the venom’s effects. In 1884, documentation confirms the first recorded human victim and it has since killed over 5,500 people. Who knows how many died before records were kept?

7. Blue-Ringed Octopus

A Blue-Ringed Octopus, athis golf ball sized sea creature has enough venom to kill as many as 26 people within minutes. Considered one of the most venomous animals in the world, no anti-venom is known. The bite may first seem harmless but then the potentially-fatal neurotoxins begin their work to cause numbness, muscle weakness, respiratory failure and death. Watch out around the Pacific beaches from Australia to Japan.

8. Fire Ants

Found typically building nests in sandy soil, fire ants live along the beach and other areas in large mounds. They normally feed on nearby plants and small insects. If disturbed by a person, the fire ants scurry to sting and protect their queen. A few stings are only annoying, unless a person is allergic, and they can be treated at home. But if a large swarm of fire ants sting, death can ensue. In fact, about 150 deaths per day occur as well as untold crop damage, qualifying this as one of the deadliest beach creatures.

9. Asian Hornets

This huge hornet can reach three-inches in length. Just 20-30 Asian hornets can invade and kill and entire hive of honeybees. While the sting is generally not lethal except for allergic reactions, there are four special aspects to the venom:

a: Its sting contains more acetylcholine, an enzyme causing pain, than any other stinging insect.
b: An enzyme in the venom dissolves living human tissue.
c: At least eight different chemicals are contained in the venom which then produce another chemical to attract other hornets to a victim.
d: As with all hornets, it has the ability to sting repeatedly.

10. Cat Fish

Don’t mess with the catfish because of the barbed spines sticking out from the back and side fins. Known for whisker-like sense organs around the mouth, many people think that the they are harmless but in fact they are very dangerous. The spine’s sting, causing pain, can even lead to death in exceptional situations. The spine toxin remains active even when fish are frozen, so be careful.

Toxopneustes pileolus, the flower urchin must be handled with great care due to the long spines which are covered with flower-like venomous pinchers, called pedicillariae. The toxin can cause paralysis and it has been documented to have killed humans in Japan.

12. Great White Shark

This exceptional large shark of “Jaws” fame lives in coastal waters in all the world’s major oceans. Reaching up to five tons and 6 meters in length, this fish is a real predator and the only surviving species of the genus. While they don’t intentionally prey on humans, they tend to “test bite” anything which looks like it could be prey and leads to a number of human fatalities each year in the U.S. During the past century, more people were killed by Great White sharks than dogs.

13. Saltwater Crocodiles

It’s pretty scary to realize that a deadly beach creature can kill an animal as large as a water buffalo. The deadly attack, known as the “death roll”, occurs when the prey is grasped firmly and the saltwater croc begins to roll in the water or on land. In one minute or less, a healthy, spirited one-ton horse can be killed. The crocodile has the ability to travel over land with amazing speed and in the water they are dolphin-quick.

15. Candiru

A naked or loosely-clothed bather can experience the candiru entering one of his or her body orifices such as the vagina, rectum, or penis. If it enters the urinary tract, the fish’s opercle spines make surgery necessary for removal. Cut down on mayo and save 100 calories!

We will be honest, while we do eagerly anticipate those glorious sun filled days spent lounging on the beach in our itty bitty bikini swimwear, to get there we usually resign ourselves to a Spartan like diet in the preparation to baring nearly all. Yes, to look that good there does seem to be a price to pay; yet if you are looking to drop a few extra pounds and truly wow come beach time you may be surprised to know that starvation is not something that needs to fit into the equation.

A common misconception is that simply by eating as little as possible and subsisting on leafy bunny like food alone you will lose the most weight in the shortest amount of time. Those crash diets are not only going to leave you a bit foggy and dizzy in the head but with one grumbling stomach too.  But did you know that the approach could also be setting you up not only for a later binge but work against your goal at the same time? If you do eat less than roughly 1,200 calories your body goes into a sort of starvation mode, your metabolism slows down to about nil, and you’ll probably be left both irritable and still stuck with those pounds. So here is your no nonsense diet plan to get into that bikini by summer time:

1. Eat breakfast first thing. If you want your metabolism to be running as fast as possible, and more importantly burning off as many calories, you want to supercharge it with a breakfast right when you wake up. A great option is something filling but not packed with calories that also contains a good source of protein which will keep you feeling full the longest. A great choice is a piece of fruit and an omelet packed with veggies.

2. Refuel throughout the day. Keep that metabolism humming throughout the day by splitting your total daily calories into three meals and two snacks; you should be eating about every three to four hours but in smaller amounts.

3. Shave a few calories here and there. To lose one pound a week you would have to cut out about 500 calories a day; that can be done by diet and also by burning some of those off by exercise.  Simple changes can really add up; opt for mustard instead of mayo on that sandwich and you could be saving yourself 100 calories for 2 tablespoons. Take that sandwich open faced and ditch the second piece of bread and there is another 120 calories less.

4. Get moving. The best way to lose weight the fastest is to combine a healthy diet with exercise; get in some great cardio activity because each mile run burns about 100 calories!

After a bite to eat, the 34-year-old strutted down the street in a pair of skyscraper peep-toe heels with husband Stephen Belafonte.

She had her own scare when she was confronted by a street performer with a boa snake, but her other half stepped in to show his bravery when he put the reptile around his neck.

Mel stood back from the unusual spectacle of Stephen and the snake, and took photos of him on her mobile phone.

The one-day event in April is called Shaping Up for Lingerie & Swimwear – Defining the Challenges, Exploring the Solutions.

It has been organised by the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry (ASBCI) in partnership with De Montfort University and Lingerie Buyer magazine.

Ten speakers from sectors including retail, contour fashion, branding, sizing and design will address some of the most pressing issues facing the industry.

Matters for discussion include contour design for fuller figures, online selling and the role of new technologies.

Open discussions will be allowed with an expert panel consisting of brand specialists including from Marks & Spencer and Tesco, along with representatives from Lingerie Buyer magazine and Di Murini the mastectomy bra specialist.

The seminar is panned for Tuesday 27th April 2010, from 9.30am to 4.30pm at the Olde Barn Hotel, Marston, Grantham.

PWS reckon that the hottest day will come in a two-week heat wave which is set for the beginning of August (might be a good time to take off work!).

So it seems us Brits could be in for a gorgeous summer this year and our bikinis may not need to jet set half way across the world to see a bit of sun!

Senior Forecaster at PWS, Jonathan Powell says that this summers temperatures will be stifling, which could possibly make it the hottest summer on record.

PWS Forecasters also predicted the big freeze which has just passed as well as a wash out summer in 2009, so let’s see if they are going to be right three times in a row for the forth coming summer.

It has been said that with these predictions, overseas holidays could see a drop in sales. But a spokeswoman from Abta doesn’t think that the forecast will have too big a impact on sales as you get much more of a weather guarantee overseas, and sometimes you just need to get away to gain perspective on your life.

One of the hottest looks is the asymmetric style in either swimming costumes or bikinis. This is the one shoulder look, and I have to say I think it is a very sophisticated look, and depending on the cut of the bikini or suit, it can be quite a modest look too.

Very popular again this year are the cut out swimsuits. These swimsuits have large geometric holes cut out in various places, often around the hip and waist areas. Some have larger areas cut out and can be quite skimpy but they look great if you have a small, toned figure and can pull it off! If you are out to find the hippest in swimwear you want to keep in mind a few key points. The first one is cut-outs and unique straps. Apparently the term granny panties may not be as horrendously out of style as previously thought as some of these makes in fact touted a waistline above the belly button. This was offset by a more revealing top and both were kept in paler tones and with a few girlie frills.

All cuts made an appearance and whether you are partial to a two piece bikini or not so inclined you can still be a fashionista. Black is also on the more slimming side and one such black tank suit took the cut out theme for a sort of slasher inspired twist with rows of slits up the front and sides; yet tastefully done in such a way as it strikes the perfect balance of just enough skin and covering up.  So next time you are perusing for you swimsuit keep these points in mind thanks to Miami fashion week.

There are always hot designers aiming to set up the trends for the future and this year was no aberration. Those sporty girls are also getting paid some attention with a few labels channelling just that look.  A few briefs were looking something akin to a micro running short and bordering on the boy cut brief but they retain an obvious feminine appeal to strike that perfect balance. So it seems that the bikini fashion icons have spoken and in turn began rolling out their latest lines for you to eagerly devour.

The local government will censor adverts with scantily clad women as the tourist state fights back against its portrayal as a “destination for sex tourism”.

“Tourism will not be affected if bikini-clad women disappear from the posters,” said the president of Travel and Tours Association of Goa (TTAG) Ralf De Souza. “In fact, it may help get good tourists.”

Chief minister Digamber Kamat said: “We should go for clean tourism. The government will try its level best to ensure that Goa is spared from the scar of bad tourism.”

Approximately 400,000 foreigners visit Goa every year, along with the two million Indians that travel to the state, but it has been hit by a number of complaints from international visitors about rape and molestation and recent years.

Cases such as the rape and murder of Devon teenager Scarlett Keeling in 2008 have hindered the state government’s effort to re-establish Goa as a preferred destination of tourists.
