Structured feather replacement (moult) send the right chemical signals to glands to sort the amounts needed out as feathers drop out. A species' chosen moult sequence comes about at the best time for it, re food, lack of stress, etc (why some do a summer complete after breeding, some do a winter complete in sunny Africa, etc.) If a feather is replaced out of sequence, other signals can be mixed in, especially if lost under stress. This is why we especially why we as birders get to see that odd flight feather (primaries, secondaries) or contour feather (esp coverts) grow back white when lost under stress. They usually sort themselves out at next moult (when not replaced under stress). Partial albinism or albinism are usually inherited imbalances, and lifelong. As this coot grew them out, I'd wager it wasn't a juv when first noted, and had some trauma going on. If over the body, then stress during planned regrowth (actual moult) or major incident (predator attack with plenty of feather loss) perhaps causes (birds have an ability to shed lots of body feathers as an anti-predator device). [b:p9385b1c]Hi Bo, I'm a little surprised that you appear not to be aware of the eponymous origin of the term 'hepatic' as applied to certain female cuckoos. This variant was first described by Robert Banks Jenkinson (1770 - 1828), a keen amateur ornithologist who observed several brown-phase birds in the vicinity of Rye in Sussex after he was elected MP for the town in 1790. His political career prospered spectacularly and left him little time for bird watching, and he became Prime Minister in 1812. In the mean time he had suceeded in 1808 on the death of his father, to the title of Earl of Liverpool. Nevertheless he remained intensely proud of his early ornithological discoveries and in a monograph of 1814 proposed the term 'hepatic' for the brown-phase of the female cuckoo as a word-play on the city from which he took his own title.
