Creating Hashtags for Your Events

Hashtags are a must-have for events. Not only do they allow your attendees to network and share information, but they are a fantastic marketing tool. It is vital to not only create a hashtag, but also become invested in how it is used. An active hashtag with great information can attract prospective attendees for future events.

For Twitter purposes, it is best to keep your hashtags short. Remember your attendees only have 140 characters to get a point across. Make sure to use the most important characters and that it is recognizable.

After you have come up with your perfect hashtag, you should check social media to make sure no one else is using it. A Google search is a good idea as well. Make sure that this hashtag is unique to your event and not just a copy of another.

Now that you have your perfect hashtag, it’s time to get your attendees to use it!

Make sure the hashtag appears on every piece of pre-conference material. Include it on every post/tweet about the event. Get it out to where your attendees will see it, so that there is no question as to what the hashtag is.

Create a video chat or podcast with a speaker from your event to give a pre-event teaser on what to expect. You could also do a pre-networking session using the hashtag. This will get your attendees in the habit of using it and it will get the word out to those that have yet to register.

Remind your attendees to use the hashtag during the event. It can be on conference materials, including signs. Ask your speakers to include it on their slides. Be sure to continually post/tweet information using the hashtag. It’s important to have someone that can post/tweet out the information that is being covered.

After the event is over you can continue to use the hashtag. All follow up actions should include the hashtag. You can curate the posts/tweets to share your event in a story format. A good tool to use is Storify. You can share everything from the educational information to the connections that were made. You can then use that as a part of your toolbox for convincing prospective attendees for the next event.

Have information that is relevant to the attendees? Then put the hashtag on it. It could then become a resource for that industry, which means that information about your event can reach even more eyes.
