Yard sales and auctions have always been a popular fundraising avenue for school and church organizations. Typically, yard sale and auction organizers solicit faculty, staff, parents, and members to donate items to their organization that the organization in turn can sale for a fundraising profit. Often times, the organizers also solicit local businesses for donations of services or items that they can also sale during the yard sale or auction. Although typically worthwhile, these yard sales and auctions have varying degrees of success, and at times take a lot of coordination and upfront work to get started.

To add a new and convenient twist to the yard sale and auction fundraiser, an organization can hold an online auction fundraiser on eBay.

BENEFITS

The benefits of an online auction fundraiser include:

1. Multiple Sell Dates -- Instead of having only one or two days to sell items like with a traditional yard sale or auction fundraiser, online auction items can be listed and sold continuously for as long as the organization chooses, which can be a unlimited source of funds.

2. Wider Buying Audience -- Instead of being limited to word of mouth and a very localized area of buyers, an online auction can attract buyers from both the local area and around the country or world according the organizer's preference, increasing the possibility of selling an item.

3. Convenience of Location -- The selling of items for an online auction can be done from the comfort of an office environment or even at the auction organizer's home. No need to worry about rain dates!

4. Less Room Needed for Storage -- Since items that are sold during the online auction can be collected as they are sold opposed to trying to gather all of the items at once, items can be stored at the donating individual's location, virtually eliminating the need for extra storage space for donated items.

5. No Cleanup After Event -- Since the auction is done online, and items are only collected as they are sold, there is no returning of items or waiting for the unsold items to be picked up by the donating individual, eliminating the need for cleanup as with traditional yard sales. No paper mess to cleanup!

6. Less Manpower Required -- Since everything with an online auction is done "online", then you don't have to worry about organizing volunteers to assist with setting up equipment, putting tags on items, cleanup after event, etc.

ONLINE AUCTION FUNDRAISING PROCESS

Sound like a great idea that you might want to try? Here's a list of the online auction fundraising process:

1) Register as an eBay Seller: The organizer would register as an eBay Seller (registration is free).

2) Ask for Donations: The auction organizer would still solicit friends, family, students, members, staff, etc. for items to use in the online auction. This solicitation could be in the form of a print newsletter, bulletin or email, with instruction telling the donating individual to take a photo of the item they are going to donate, and an email address for the donor to send pictures of the items to for the auction organizer to post.

3) Place and Price Donated Items on eBay: The auction organizer would then post the pictures received from the donating individuals, set prices for the donated items, and start the online auction.

4) Send Off Sold Item: When the organizer is notified that an item has been sold, they would then collect the items from the donating individuals and send them to the buyer.

5) Provide a Receipt to Donating Individuals: The online auction organizer would then give the donating individual a receipt for the item sold for their tax deduction purposes.

Chuck E. Cheese School Fundraiser

Name of Fundraiser: Chuck E. Cheese Fundraiser

Profit Potential: 15% of all register sales generated by your participating friends and family members

How it Works: Your school picks a night to host a fundraiser at Chuck E. Cheese. Chuck E. Cheese will then tally the sales for all food, merchandise, and token deals purchased by your group through the registers on the night of your fundraising event and donate 15% of the profit to your school. Your school will be given materials to pass out to participants to promote this fundraiser, and teachers that attend the event will be given a free meal. In addition, "Chuck E." is available to visit your school on the day of the event.

Please note, this fundraising program is currently only available to non-profit public or private pre-school or elementary schools only with 75 or more students.

How it Works: Sally Foster sells a wide variety of items such as gift wrap, gourmet foods, chocolates, and unique gift items. For every item purchased during the fundraiser, the school or non-profit gets 50% of the sell price. This fundraiser is very beneficial, as orders can be placed online by out of town buyers, as well as through the print catalog shown by the seller. All a customer has to do when placing an order online for their school to get the credit is be sure to enter (or search for) the seller's or group/organization's account number and the order will be credited appropriately.

Profit Potential: 5% of the net sales of your local Whole Foods Market for the day

How it Works: Individual stores hold 5% Days (or CommUnity Giving Days), where they donate 5% of that day's net sales to a local/regional non-profit or educational organization. Every time a customer shops, a portion of their bill goes toward the 5% donation to charitable causes. Watch for signs displayed in your local Whole Foods store to find out when upcoming 5% days will be held. Do your normal shopping on that day, and 5% of your total purchases (before taxes) will automatically be donated to the particular cause that store is sponsoring on that day. There is a different cause/organization that is supported each time. To sign your organization up to become a donation recipient, contact the Marketing Director at your local Whole Foods store.

This website sells school supplies and also talks about selling items such as magnets, bumper stickers, mugs, keychains, etc. to raise funding for your school. How it Works: Krispy Kreme offers several delicious ways to raise funding for your school!

1. Traditional Doughnut Sales -- Using this method, Krispy Kreme offers doughnuts to non-profit groups at a reduced price, which they can then resale for full retail price (or higher). Please check with your local Krispy Kreme store for ordering details.

2. Certificates** -- Instead of selling boxes of doughnuts, you can sell certificates to customers to redeem for one dozen Original Glazed doughnuts at any participating Krispy Kreme retail store. Using this method, you don't have to worry about carrying around boxes of doughnuts, and your customers can go get doughnuts at their convenience.

3. Partnership Cards** -- If your school or organization is within 30 minutes of a Krispy Kreme store, you may want to consider selling Partnership Cards as a fundraiser. With a Partnership Card, customers get a free dozen Original Glazed doughnuts with the purchase of a dozen of their choice. Their card gets punched each time they use it and they can use it up to ten times (limit of 3 free dozen per visit).

4. Coffee -- In participating markets, you can sell Krispy Kreme's Signature Coffees as part of your fundraiser. Krispy Kreme has four delicious coffee blends: Smooth, Bold, Rich and Robust Decaf. You can sell the bags of coffee solo or as a great pairing with their doughnuts -- your school or organization's profit can be $3.00 or more per bag. Profit Potential: Up to 45% of cookie dough order total

How it Works: Your organization orders a cookie dough fundraiser kit that includes 12 brochures of nine delicious oookie mixes to choose from. Each 3 pound tub of cookie dough costs $12 and will make approximately 4 dozen cookies. A minimum of 96 units/tubs must be sold. The checks that your customers write for the fundraiser are made payable to your organization so the organization gets their profits upfront, and then they are just invoiced by Current for the amount due on the units sold. How it Works: GoodShop.com is part of the Goodsearch.org fundraising search engine that gives money to your school or charity for each search performed through their website. The GoodShop Online Shopping Mall Fundraiser works like this -- every time you click over to one of GoodShop's partner merchants (like Gap, eBay, Macy's, Land's End, Sears, Target, etc.) from the GoodShop.com website and then make a purchase, your charity or school earns money (approximately 3% of the total purchase amount).

GoodSearch will send each organization a check once a year in December for the funds earned through the prior 12 months ending Sept. 30 providing the organization has accrued $20 or more. Food Lion, a supermarket chain serving Mid-Atlantic States in the U.S., has a fundraising program named the "LionShop & Share" program where users can get raise money for their non-profit organization. If you live in the Hampton Roads or Tidewater, Virginia area, you don't want to miss out on the The Farm Fresh ABC’s Fundraiser Program to earn money for your school or church. All you have to do is just shop for groceries like you would normally do at any neighborhood Farm Fresh Supermarket, and at the bottom of your cash register receipt, there will be a separate tear off portion that you turn in to your school or church that shows how much money was spent. A portion of the amount spent will in turn be given to your school. This is especially lucrative during the months of September and January, as during these months, every receipt is worth DOUBLE the amount spent!

Again, this is very effortless, as you will automatically get a receipt generated to turn in when you check out -- there's nothing to sign up for or designate.

One more thing -- during this time of year, Farm Fresh has pre-packaged bags of groceries at the front of the store near the check-out stations that can be purchased to give to the local food banks for less fortunate people. Scrip Advantage Bankruptcy

Scrip Advantage, once one of the largest school and non-profit fundraising organizations, filed for bankruptcy in 2006. Unfortunately, many organizations will be out of thousands of dollars as a result of this. If you are one of the organizations or schools that has been affected by this and you would like to make a claim, you must fill out this claim form (PDF format) once Scrip Advantage files for bankruptcy and send it to the court where the bankruptcy is filed. This fund raising program is very similar to the Campbell's Labels for Education program. Simply purchase any General Mills products with the Box Tops for Education label on it, turn it in to your school, and they in turn will send it in for school funding. It's that simple. This is really cool because you can find these box tops on many food items such as cookies and muffin mix, and even on non-food items such as toilet tissue! The Campbell's Labels for Education fund raising campaign has been around for many years and provides large amounts of funding to schools throughout the country each year. The process is simple -- simply peel off the labels of your Campbell's soups and turn them into your school. Your school will then send them in to Campbell's to redeem them for school funding. Also, did you know that all Campbell's labels aren't worth the same amount of money? I found that the Campbell's line of Chunky Chilis are actually worth 5 soup labels! Campbell's makes lots of other products that you can turn into your school for funding -- it's not just limited to soups!
