Ciao baby! Yes, the weekend beckons, and I am fired up about getting out of town, heading up to Seattle for a little business and oodles of pleasure – the food, the view, the company and, oh yes, the shopping. I already have a consignment clothing store staked out (Alexandra’s on Olive Way, has anyone been there? Reviews?). Needless to say, with the busy, busy week I’ve had, similar to yours I’m sure, I’m thrilled to have made it to Friday.

This past week in Paris, the spring couture collections have been quite feminine and for the most part, very stunning. Christian Dior most certainly was my pick for best in show and it seemed to be many of yours as well as it was the most popular post of the week. Sufficed to say, I love to travel, and when I do, I like to do it well, but with the goal of eliminating all the unnecessary extras. So with a handful of exciting and dream-coming-true trips planned this year, my mind has been on traveling and how to do so in style – specifically how to fly in style guarantee a pleasured filled experience from take-off to landing.

Pre-Flight Planning

The day before your trip, double check the time of departure, calculate how long it will take to get to the airport and how you will get there. Be sure to have the necessary documents (ID’s, Passport, tickets, etc) and necessary cash or traveler’s checks ready to go.

Stylish, Yet Comfortable Attire

Always travel in style, as you will be treated in the manner you present yourself. If you’re feeling like Charlize Theron, put ballet flats in your carry-on tote and wear stilettos through the terminal, slipping on your flats when you’re on board. Dress in layers – a tank, camisole or short-sleeve fine fabric blouse, followed by a cardigan, blazer or leather jacket. Throw in a large scarf that can serve as a blanket or warmth around your neck if it’s chilly outside. Functionable Carry-On Packed with Essentials

Recently I began traveling with a hard shell suitcase with 360 degree wheels. It makes it effortless to travel between gates and protects what you’ve packed from being smashed. As far as what I pack inside my carry on and tote: reading material (magazines, books, iPad), medications, necessary toiletries (toothpaste, feminine items, contacts & solution, etc), laptop, smart phone, one outfit, jewelry and basic make-up.

How to Look Fresh on Arrival

While flying, be sure to hydrate by drinking water when asked what beverage you’d prefer. Just before touching down, take a trip to the restroom, spritz your face with water, massage a luxurious facial moisturizer onto your face (preferably tinted to save time), touch up your make-up simply with concealer, blush, no smudge mascara and a neutral lip. With your over-sized sunglasses in hand, swiftly put on your blazer, cardigan or jacket and you will look fabulous.

A Luxurious, Functional Office – Houzz IdeaBook

At the beginning of the year, I shared ideas on how to create a productive office which correlated with a previous post where I shared the foundational pieces all offices should have regardless of your decor style. Needless to say, the space where I work must be aesthetically pleasing. There must be a certain “feel” to the room in order for me to call it my office. Yes, this sounds picky, but at the same time, it has everything to do with staying in tune with who you are and knowing how to help create a most productive work environment so that by the end of the day, you can wrap up your work and feel good about what you’ve accomplished.

With that said, I’ve done a bit of shopping for you, as I have designed what I define as a simply luxurious office space. What inspired this was that about a month ago, Houzz.com (Houzz is a leading destination site for home design enthusiasts) contacted me and asked if I might create a monthly decor ideabook that adhered to the premise that you, my readers, have come to recognize everyday. With my love for luxurious aesthetics, but a need for simplicity, I was thrilled to be able to share more of my decor ideas and have even more of a reason to peruse the internet shopping for fabulous finds.

What that means is each month I will be creating a new ideabook focused on a central theme. For example, this month was creating a luxurious, functional office space, but next month may be focusing on different styles of chandeliers or French Country decor.

What I would love from my readers is for you to share (leave a comment or email me) what you are most interested in seeing as I will keep your ideas in mind as I want to share ideas that you would most be interested in.

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Couture

Wearable couture? Who knew? Now if only I could afford it. But a girl can dream, and these dresses are what dance through my fashion dreams.

Bill Gaytten went back to the foundations of Dior – nipping the waists, flouncing the skirts – which is a 180 reverse from John Galliano’s extravagant Alice-in-Wonderland-esque designs, thus making them must more applicable for the woman who wants to not only purchase a piece, but be able to wear it down the street. 4 Ways to Guarantee A Great Monday

Monday often becomes labeled as the red-headed stepchild of the seven day week, but that’s only if we aren’t prepared for it and choose not to take advantage of all that it offers.

Today, I’d like to reveal four tips on how to ensure that Monday becomes a much more enjoyable day in the work week. After all, Monday is the first impression for the rest of the week that sets the tone and can potentially become a day that instead of dreading becomes a day that is respected for its ability to keep us grounded, helping to balance our work and play in a successful manner.

Use the Weekend as a Springboard

A few weeks ago I shared what a typical work day looked like for me, and while every weekend has its own unique identity, there are a handful of regular things I make sure to do before Monday rolls around in order to help make Monday as successful and productive as possible. Here are my five regular things to do during the weekend no matter what else I may have planned.

Check off the To-Dos

There are usually errands that can’t be completed during the week that begin to pile up just waiting to be dealt with when Saturday arrives. Take the time to group them all together and complete them on Saturday rather than Sunday so that you aren’t burdening yourself with the reminder all weekend of this nagging task.

Stay on Schedule

With regards to your body, try to sleep 6-8 hours as well as staying as close to your “to bed” and “to rise” times as well. Adhering to the same times as best as possible keeps your body in a rhythm, so that when Monday arrives, waking up at five, six or seven, isn’t a shock.

Relax

Scheduling time to relax is a must. After all, unwinding and getting lost in activities we love is what the weekends are for. In order to perform our best during the week, we must strike a balance and rejuvenate over the weekend.

Don’t Overbook

Simply because everything you have planned for the weekend involves activities and people you love, be diligent about not overbooking yourself which may potentially cause you to see the week as more of a respite than the two day weekend. Be savvy with your energy levels and time. After all, we only have so much to give and use.

A Moment to Plan

Call me crazy, but this is something that I look forward to during my Sunday afternoons. Carving out time to sit down with my planner and look at the week in front of me, prepares me for what I have to accomplish and reminds me that getting a good night’s sleep is imperative if I’m going to function at my best. This is also a great time to plan the week’s meals, create a grocery list and make sure all of the clothes you will need are washed, laundered and ready to be worn.

Laundry – ironing, dry cleaners, etc

A Workout is a Must

Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, made a simple suggestion for a happier week that until I had read was something I never considered, but at the same time, wondered why I hadn’t thought of it earlier. Always workout on Monday. Why? Beginning the week by checking one workout off your list immediately as the week begins and taking the time to take of your body is sure to have a positive effect on your energy levels and mood.

Tackle the Tough First

When you get to work, choose to complete a task that will bring great relief when it is successfully put to bed. Knowing you have been quite productive early in the week provides inspiration and lifts your confidence as you proceed through the week, ultimately setting a positive tone.

A Good Night’s Sleep

I know I mentioned it at the beginning of the post, but because of its importance, it’s worth repeating. Go to bed at a decent time, so that when that alarm clock begins to sing, you are capable of starting the day out on the right foot.

With these simple tips, Monday no longer has to be a day to dread, but instead can become a day to ground us and begin the week on a very good note.

With black and white images that lend themselves to so much more romance and intrigue, I am dreaming of Paris, getting lost in the process of feeling beautiful and the confidence that is awakened when we allow ourselves to be pampered.

Yes, the weekend is here and whether you are dreaming of Paris, like myself, or able to dance along its streets, may we all find the magic that these two days offer up. This past week in the Pacific Northwest have allowed for two snow days which I have lapped up and devoured as it allowed me more time in front of my computer, talking, working and dreaming with all of you. Why Not. . . Recognize the Stages of Making a Lifestyle Change?

Over the past year, I have been witness to two different stages of the transformation process when it comes to change someone’s way of living. Each person is someone I either work with or care deeply for, and so I have keenly observed what they were going through. What I have noticed was something I have spoke about previously on the blog regarding having to struggle as we shed old skins, in other words ways of doing things, in order to create a new and more wonderful life for ourselves.

Each stage is different and involves its own unique emotions, patterns and behaviors, but like the stages of grief, each stage is necessary to go through in order to emerge on the other side, in order to reach the much desired (and often needed) change. Now some people will stay in one particular stage longer than others and less at times in others. How this change occurs in their lives won’t look exactly like someone else’s, but the following six stages are certainly something to be aware of especially when you begin, so that you don’t become frustrated and throw your hands up walking away when you’ve made so much progress.

1. Ignorant of the Reality

The beginning of the process of making a lifestyle change often begins without our knowing it needs to take place. Most likely, others are noticing that something needs to change, but we are ignorant to this fact, or don’t want to listen. For some people this stage takes longer than others, but it similar to having a broken gas light in your car that alerts you when you are low on full. The fact is (whether you know it or not) you are about to run out of gas and be stranded if you don’t pull into the next gas station, but at the present moment because the car is running, it appears that everything is going just fine.

2. Contemplation

At this stage, you are aware that a change needs to occur and are beginning to mull over ideas on how to accomplish it. However, no action is occurring; therefore, nothing is getting done.

3. Becoming Resolute

No longer are you simply considering the idea of change, but you are more than convinced that something must be altered because you can no longer go on doing what you’ve always done – only getting three hours of sleep, refusing to exercise and eating poorly, or living like there are 48 hours in a day when unfortunately that number will always be stuck at 24.

4. Planning

Now that you know exactly what you want to change and accept that it is necessary in order to live a better life, the brainstorming begins. Once all the possible options are laid out on the table, a decision is made regarding the best plan for your personality and success in making sure the needed change becomes a reality. This will also include the preparation of supplies if you are going to need assistance – a healthy clear out of the fridge and restocking, or making an appointment with a personal trainer, or contacting your human resources department, just as examples. In other words, you become ready to take action.

5. Putting it into Play

Now you are doing what is necessary to move yourself closer to your goal of change. You are engaged and garnering the strength to say no to that extra serving, saying no to friends who want to hold you back because they don’t understand why you are choosing to change, saying no to a way of life that is not lifting you to your best potential but instead pulling you down.

6. Making it a Way of Life

The initial first few attempts will be exhilarating, not only because they are new, but also because the surprise of realizing you really can do what you’ve set out to do, will lift your spirits; however, it is continuing on even when that giddy energy dissipates that will ultimately cause the change to stick. Once you make it clear to others (whether through your actions or your words) that this change you are taking on isn’t a phase, they will either back off or support you. When this happens, it actually makes it easier for you to make the change a way of life because you are creating a culture around yourself that is getting to know the “new” you and slowly this change that you are seeking will no longer be new, but will be the new and improved you.

I will tell you this, many people don’t make it through the entire process, as I alluded to earlier. Many people assume that change can occur without too much effort, but once you realize that true, lasting and life-changing alterations take time and diligent perseverance, you will hopefully stay the course, navigating through each of the above six steps so that you can experience what exquisite experiences await.

Do this for yourself. Do this for a better life for those you care about, and most importantly, dig deep to find that inner strength that is needed to be successful. It’s there if you’re willing to look for it.

Captured in bohemian-chic styles, Mario Testino reveals a young, ever evolving style aficionado Taylor Swift. On the cover of Anna Wintour’s Vogue February 2012 issue, her hypnotic blue eyes sell the the decision of celebrities as cover worthy. Yes, it does become an expected frustration when month after month not a single fashion model appears on the the most coveted cover in the fashion industry (Hello, Karlie Kloss? Still waiting to step out of the pages and onto the cover), but Wintour understands what sells, and if she wishes to broaden her reach, she knows the fashion conscious will still pick up the issues month after month, but it is those who are not so fashion minded that she seeks to convert.

6 Essentials to Create a Life of True Accomplishment

What does an accomplished life look like to the outsider? Oodles of cash? Multiple homes? Being able to send each child to an esteemed college? Or is it something more intrinsic? Something less discernable by the naked eye?

As you might imagine, I would wholeheartedly defend the latter definition of an accomplished life. Unlike what much of the media, music videos, pop celebrities would have us believe, an accomplished life if one that is in step with the values each of us believe is most important, being able to successfully live up to our true potential which is different for every single individual and the ability to create a legacy that contributes to the world each of us will someday leave behind.

With that said, below are the six essentials for living a truly accomplished life:

1. Be Courageous

In life, to pursue the life you most desire, it will take courage, risk and strong belief that you are worth tackling the unknown. It is easy to stay on the path that others have followed, but when you listen to your heart, when you realize what it is that you want and what should be done, you must be courageous enough to take action even if the path won’t be easy.

2. Continually Seek Wisdom

Never stop learning. Always choose to be a student in this classroom of life. There are lessons each day just waiting to be absorbed. Open yourself to the belief that whatever happens during your day is an opportunity to become a better version of yourself. And if you choose this philosophy, you will always be able to find energy to seek out a better life for yourself.

3. Be Nurturing

Show compassion – to children, to adults, to animals, to the community, to the world in general. Provide guidance whether it be with your words or by setting a positive example. Grow a garden. Plant a tree and watch it grow into it’s full maturity, so that you might sit beneath it protected by its shade on a hot summer day.

4. Give More Than You Take

Choose a life, choose a job path, choose a daily attitude that is contributing to the society, the community, and the relationships you are involved with in a positive way. Always be mindful of your attitude because giving doesn’t always have to involve material possessions, but also includes the energy we project out into the world.

5. Practice Integrity Even When No One is Around

Be honest. Pay your taxes. Be faithful. Uphold your promises. The life you desire to live will not be enhanced with the immoral shortcuts, but in fact will be complicated tremendously. As Mark Twain reminds us, “It’s much easier to remember the truth, than a lie.” Make your life easier and enjoy much more peaceful nights sleep by simply acting with integrity.

6. Be Cognizant of History

In order to make decisions as you move toward your goals that you wish to enjoy in the future, you must be aware of the past. Being informed, doing your research and overall, just being savvy and eliminating as much ignorance as possible, will always be a favorable decision when it comes to living your most accomplished life.

This week, take some time and sit down to evaluate if your life does indeed incorporate these six essentials. The good news is, true accomplishment doesn’t arrive in our lives when we bring home the award or when the outside world recognizes our success, but instead when we have been honest with ourselves, when we’ve dug into and given it our best and lived up to what we know is possible (and often we surpass this, which is a wonderful surprise). Have confidence in yourself that living a life of true accomplishment will soon be your new reality, if it isn’t already.

With the arrival of a long weekend, a huge sigh of relief escapes from my lips, and I am thrilled, as I know a weekend away awaits to beg us to stay in bed a bit longer, sweet treats just waiting to be devoured and time gentling offering itself simply to allow us to unwind knowing that reality is far, far away.

How are you? How has this first full week of January treated you? Hopefully, you are entering the weekend with the retrospective of great productivity having occurred throughout the week, but acknowledgement that a rejuvenating weekend must occur for such a week to happen again.

Why Not . . . Create a Clean Slate for the New Year?

One of my favorite things to do each year as a new year begins (and actually I also do it on my birthday and at the beginning and end of the school year) is to first, look back and determine how much growth has occurred, what approaches worked, which did not and make a specific list so that while I am not done chasing goals, I can at least pat myself on the back for what I’ve accomplished in the last 12 months.

Once I have looked back, I then set my sights forward and make clear goals/resolutions on what I want to target as the new year begins. And no matter what I write down, it is quite helpful to begin the new year with a clean slate and with as few leftovers from the previous twelve months as possible.

With a long holiday weekend coming up in the states in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., I am looking forward to tackling this list I am sharing with you today. There is nothing more unburdening and rejuvenating than tidying up the business of your life. And that is truly how you must see it. No matter what you do for a living, your life is your own little business, and you determine how successfully it is managed. If it is cluttered, productivity will wane; however, it you are well organized and clear about how you want to successfully go through your day, there is an increased potential for wonderful successful and happiness.

So, without further chit chat, below is a list of ideas so that you can begin this year, and each subsequent year, with a clean slate, leaving as much room as possible for tremendous growth.

1. Clean Out Your Files

Knowing exactly where certain paperwork is located without blinking an eye is a very comforting feeling when it comes to security. Take the time to go through all of your files, shredding what is no longer needed to be kept and strategically making files for each company that has a bill you pay (and thus receive an invoice), a fund you have money in or any other set of documents that are necessary to keep at the house. 2. Clean Out the Refrigerator and the Pantry

Whether you’ve set a resolution to lose weight or not, clean out your fridge and edit your pantry, evaluating what you have in it, trying to maintain healthy choices, as well as limiting the snacks. 3. Clear Out Email Inboxes

Choosing to go digital is a great idea to reduce clutter, but when the inbox is overloaded, just looking at the long list of emails can be a drain on our mental psyche. Take some time to clear it out, filing important emails in appropriate folders and feel at ease knowing that you have dealt with all unfinished business from last year, so that the new year can begin with a fresh start.

4. Reset Fitness Goals

So how do you feel in your body? Do you feel full of energy, or sluggish? Do you feel you are as fit as you can be, or could you be a bit more disciplined? Take some time to reassess how well your previous health approach was working and tweak it to either maintain or improve your outer and inner being. Add new music to your iTunes account, set simple goals – maybe just one each month, and once you successfully follow through, add another new habit – walk each morning or eliminate desserts, or limit the amount of caffeine you consume. Oh, and on the fashion side, treat yourself to a new set of workout pants or a top you’ve had your eye on. Working out is easier to look forward to when you know you will be looking your best.

5. Get In Sync with Your Finances

Being financially secure is a piece of the foundation that allows for true independence and a healthy self-confidence. (Click here for more financial ideas and inspiration.) How much money is where? How much money is REALLY coming in each month? If you have debt, create a reasonable plan to pay it down. Begin to prep for taxes and organize all receipts and other necessary materials.

6. Go Through Your Closet

Last week, I shared my top five new years’ resolutions for fashion, and I must reiterate that going through your closet at least once a year (some do it seasonally) allows for you to determine what it is you should be shopping for when you do go clothes shopping. One of the reasons our closets become so cluttered, yet we still feel like we have nothing to wear is because we don’t have a clear idea of what we are looking for. Upon going through your closet, create three piles - keep, fix, and donate. Then, based on the fundamental pieces needed in your wardrobe (view my suggested list here), make a list of what is missing and what you need be searching for when you head out to your favorite boutique.

By following this six steps, you are that much closer to making sure 2012 is the best year yet. And if you choose to embark on this task during this upcoming weekend, think of me, as I will be cleaning my slate right along with you.

A Day In The Life . . .

Last month a reader made the suggestion on this post that I share my daily routine. While all of my posts that appear on Mondays and Wednesdays are derived from what I believe in and what I try to practice in my life in order to live a fulfilling and contented life, I mulled over the idea and finally came to the conclusion . . . well, I think this post is a dead give away, don’t you?

Needless to say, I respect my readers’ requests and want to provide content that you can find value in and want to read, so . . . here it goes. What I hope you will see is that my daily routine fairly simple, but also allows for some time to feel comfort and pampered – thus, the luxurious part. After all, it is about being clear about our intentions, knowing what we want to accomplish and how we are going to do and then, finding the balance so that we have the energy each day to put our best foot forward.

On a regular work day my goal is to begin feeling rested, work in such a way that I may end the day feeling productive, as well as having had the ability to balance business with some pleasure and calm.

5 or 5:30am – Wake up, walk the dogs if my afternoon is especially full or shower (washing my hair only every second or third day – saves time and my hair). Twice a week – go through my simple strength routine for arms, abs and legs, and if I have time 3 sets of Sun Salutations. Always having to have something in the background to keep me moving, I turn on Morning Joe on MSNBC to get up-to-date on world/national news.

6:30pm – While still in my robe (to make sure I don’t spill on my clothes), I make myself the same breakfast that I have every morning – traditional oatmeal sprinkled with sliced roasted almonds, 1/2 cup of orange juice, 1/2 whole wheat English muffin, and one egg. Turning on NPR to listen to while I eat my breakfast in my kitchen nook with either the Sunday New York Times that I haven’t finished from the weekend or an article from The New Yorker that I am slowly making my way through. My dogs – Norman and Oscar are chilling at my feet waiting to lick my plates when I’m done (yes, I realize my dogs are spoiled, and the dog whisperer would have a fit – please don’t tell.)

7 am – Time to choose the outfit and enjoy deciding on the shoes, accessories and which coat will take me where I need to go throughout the duration of my day.

7:30 am – Head to work with Tazo’s Zen green tea with lemongrass in my travel mug.

Late morning – snack on a Gala apple (my favorite – not too sweet, but just enough, and never too tart).

Lunch – Fage Greek yogurt with strawberries – so filling, you’ll be amazed – I promise.

3:30 or 4pm – After work is complete, before heading home, I take care of errands, trying to condense them into as few trips as possible and stop by the grocery store for any fresh items I will need for dinner (and always try to bring my cloth grocery bags, but sometimes I forget too and I always kick myself).

4pm – 5pm – If I didn’t exercise in the morning, I would make sure to do so now, otherwise, I try to schedule appointments into this window if at all possible.

5pm – The Simply Luxurious Life beckons, and I work on my laptop.

7pm – Dinner. Only indulging in dessert three times a week with a truffle just before bed if it is a non-dessert night to reward myself for following my eating plan (peanut butter is my favorite).

7pm once a week – yoga with my favorite yoga instructor.

7:30 – The evening is mine to unwind, read, sip tea, watch a DVRed show and simply relax. My dogs of course will want to snuggle which I gladly welcome.

9 or 10 – To bed for beauty sleep and enough energy to get up and do it all again.

As you know, there are days and special events and demands on our time that change the order of this day, but ultimately this is the schedule I do my best to stick to, and thankfully with much diligence, it happens more than not.

As you can see, each day, while full, still allows for moments of rest and indulging in activities I love. Nothing thrills me more than living this life that has taken work to create for myself and those I love and welcome into my life, and that includes having the opportunity to communicate with you, my readers. Keep the ideas and suggestions coming regarding posts you would like to see. It is truly my goal to create a blog you enjoy visiting each day of the work week, all the while adhering to The Simply Luxurious Life premise.

10 Simple Ways to be More Charismatic

For a moment, make a mental note of all the people you enjoy being around, the people you desire to spend time with and the people you look up to. Now, what do all of these people have in common? While there will be many different, unique reasons for each person, more than likely one of the common threads is that there is something exciting, something certain and at the same time something welcoming about the energy each of the people you are thinking about exude.

While there are many ways for these three components to be projected out into the world, they all can be explained as elements of a charismatic person. Defined as exercising a compelling charm that inspires devotion in others, being charismatic may come more naturally to some, but it is possible for all of us to include more of it in our lives, thereby improving our social skills and opening doors to new possibilities.

Many leaders have charisma, more often than not well-liked celebrities possess loads of charisma and effective teachers, doctors (bedside manner) and nurses as well must have at least some charisma to be successful while working with an a array of different people.

Some may argue that being charming can become insincere, but here is where I believe the difference is. There is being charismatic and there is being ingratiating. The former being an act of sincere interest and involvement and the latter being insincere due to selfish wishes one is ultimately hoping with occur.

So, how can anyone become more charismatic? Here are 10 simple ways that will be sure to garner more conversation, interest and an magnetic attraction that draws others towards you.

1. Be Warm, Yet Strong

Smile sincerely. Be confident, but not arrogant. Don’t tilt your chin up which causes you to literally be looking down your nose, but instead, tilt your head slightly down as to be able to look at someone at their level with more sympathy and understanding.

2. Stand Up Straight

Perception is everything, and if you look confident, people will perceive you as confident, until you give them a reason to think otherwise. So, follow my father’s advice and own your height, whether it’s 5’11” or 4’9” – stand up straight and walk surely in your shoes.

3. Be Willing to Listen without Judgment

Keep an open mind. People will want to talk to someone who is actually hearing what they are saying, not just nodding their head and immediately making a judgment. To know you have been heard, even if a solution isn’t readily available, is an opportunity to connect and bond with someone. It always amazes me how little people actually listen, but with so many distractions in our world, to take the time to do so can make just about anyone feel very special and therefore, your actions will not be forgotten.

4. Have an Abundance Mentality

By being grateful and appreciative for the life you are already living, you attract more beauty into it. In other words, go out into the world with the attitude of feeling blessed instead of with your hand out thinking you are lacking. Such an approach will help you lighten up and not be so uptight. When you believe you are living a good life, you can relax, have a sense of humor and just live in the moment thereby being more attractive and inviting to others.

5. Exude Vivaciousness

Charismatic people exude an energy for life that is intoxicating to those around them, motivating them to give a new idea or exercise a try. By displaying sincere, positive energy, the creativity and excitement is captivating to those who watch and listen to you.

6. Don’t be a Pushover

It’s one thing to be open to meeting new people and listening to all that they want to share, but always know where you stand and what you stand for. Being willing to have an opinion, while being open to others’ ideas, will require that you know why you believe what you believe so that you can also entertain a conversation or healthy banter. Don’t become a “yes girl/boy”. You will gain respect by being someone who leads without pushing, but you never want to be someone who is flailing in the wind. In other words, be assertive.

7. Be in the Moment

Be fully present. Look someone in the eye when they are talking and let them know that where you are is where you want to be – talking to them.

8. Be Curious

Diane Sawyer pointed out that one of the best pieces of advice she ever received from her father was “Remain curious.” In other words, be the person who is asking the questions. Choose to get to know those around you and your curiousness will attract them to you even more because of the interest you have shared in them. People in general are so wrapped up in their own worlds that to show curiosity about someone else simply just because is quite flattering.

9. Speak with Intention & Determination

As a person with charisma, it is a bit easier to appear as such, but the next key step is to follow through when you open your mouth. Always know what you are going to say and keep it succinct. In other words, always think quickly and speak slowly, and then speak in a tone that is not questioning or doubtful, but instead resolute, confident and determined.

10. Fall in Love with Life & All Its Possibilities

When someone is excited about life and its possibilities, it’s easy to be drawn to them, just as on the flip side, someone who is cynical about life is a repellant. Choose to be someone who sees the possibility in life and mean it. Live it. Go out and design your life, put forth the effort, so that when someone is asking questions about you, you have something worthwhile to talk about.

It will take conscious effort, but by choosing to be more charismatic, you will be certain to improve your social world, as well as conversation in any situation.

The Weekend . . .

Weekends are for cozy over-sized cashmere sweaters, casual walks through the snow with the dogs in the late morning brisk air and taking time to pop into your favorite boutiques just to see the new merchandise that might spruce up your closet.

While there may not be snow in the Pacific Northwest, the rest of the above weekend scenario sounds quite delightful, and I fully intend to immerse myself into such leisure. How about you? Won’t you join me in such pursuits?

With the house back to normal and schedules too, I must say January is becoming a month I rather appreciate more than usual. There is something quite lovely about routines especially when you haven’t been following them for some time. Why Not . . . Create A Productive Office?

Some of you, like myself, may have made a resolution that pertains to work – mine was specifically to create a more organized and productive workspace. With that said, I became quite excited about the decor and organizational aspects of this goal; however, prior to plowing ahead, I wanted to create a checklist to ensure that the foundation of what makes a productive office was laid out properly, and below are what I believe to be the most important pieces to creating an office space that is not only welcoming to the worker, but successful in its production.

Make Wise Color Choices

When it comes to painting or wallpapering your office, make sure you decide on a color that is inspiring, not depleting. After all, this area of the house has a very focused purpose – to create a product that reflects the artist/worker’s best abilities. Some may prefer a clean, streamlined space - white or off-white perhaps, some may prefer more earth tones that are neutral in their base – taupe, chocolates, beige, etc, while others may want to be a bit more creative and colorful – yellows, greens and shades of orange. Whatever you choose, remember that you are still going to be able to bring in accessories and furniture, so it might be best to keep the foundation (walls, floors, etc) calming and add color (if wanted) by way of photos, pillows, shelving decor, etc. Either way, let what inspires you and prompts you to create be your driving force when making a decision when it comes to color choices.

Create a Place of Inspiration

Once the color of the walls has been decided upon, place images and objects that continue to create a place of inspiration. Perhaps a bamboo plant (they welcome good luck) or flowers? Is music a must in your office? Why not include a quality Bose radio or dock for your iPod? If you are a writer like me, I need seating that is comfortable whether I’m working at the desk or plopped down on the couch with my laptop, so choosing furniture that is welcoming and soothing is something to keep in mind as well.

When it Comes to Technology - Quality vs. Quantity

Less is more, and while you may not have the budget for an Apple MacBook Pro, trust me, it is worth saving up for, as after purchasing my Dell laptop three years ago, I have now spent just as much (and more likely more) than I would have on an Apple. Eliminate the headaches and purchase quality when it comes to the tools you depend on.

Take Command

Whether you adhere to the rules of feng shui or not, choose to place your desk in such a way that allows you to see the door or entrance to your office. In other words, do not place yourself with your back to the door. Initially this may not seem like a big deal, but the energy and command of the room you will convey is immediate when you face whatever is brought through the door to your space of production.

Get & Remain Organized

First, remove all clutter and begin a filing system that is easy to follow and that you will adhere to consistently. Then create a place for everything – incoming/outgoing mail, business cards, pens, notepads, inspiration board, charging station for all of your technology, etc. Then follow the system that you have created. Not only will it save you time, but it will free your mind, allowing it to be open to more ideas and a flow of imagination. Another aspect of organization is how you travel and then return to your office. Do you have the proper carrier cases for your laptop, iPad, etc? Knowing you’re always able to function regardless of where you are and where to place these items in your office is something to keep in mind as well. Use ONE Calendar

With the endless options for keeping a planner – Google Docs, iPhone, Blackberry, Franklin planners, etc – it’s easy to think that maybe each of the systems offered to us should be used, but immediately I would advice to ignore that particular thought. First of all, keep it simple. The best way to do that is to choose one system. Come to understand which system works best with your way of doing things and then regardless of whether other people understand it or not, stick to it and ignore what others may believe is the better choice. For example, I tried to used my former Blackberry’s calendar and then I realized I loved having to handwrite my daily schedule. So I reverted back to Franklin Planners and have never looked back. This way you know exactly where everything is and don’t have to wonder which calendar contains that necessary information that you’re searching for at any given moment.

Once you have created a foundation that promotes success, the rest is up to you – the doer, the creator, the programmer. So enjoy the design process and enjoy even more so the creative process.

Top 5 Fashion Resolutions

While I have made my grand resolutions for 2012, I couldn’t help but write down my fashions resolutions. After all, looking our best is what helps us stand up a little straighter, exude self-confidence and without a word project to the world that we are going to achieve what we set out to achieve.

So with that said, below are my top five fashion resolutions as I continue to live a simply luxurious life. I would love for you to share your fashion resolutions as well.

1. Shop Consignment Stores First

There is a consignment shop in Portland – Seams to Fit – that makes me feel like a child on Christmas morning just as I enter the store because I never know what I will find. I have yet to be disappointed, as I always find something that would work well with my signature style. With that said, my checkbook thanks me because I’m not paying an arm and a leg, and I have an item that is less likely to be seen on another walking down the street. In other words, before hitting Nordstrom (or whatever your department store vice may be), visit your local consignment shop.

2. Shop Regularly, Not On Demand

Melissa Tosetti of The Savvy Life suggests in her book Living the Savvy Life to regularly frequent your favorite boutiques and clothing stores (on a monthly basis approximately) in order to see new merchandise, get to know the owner as they will too get to know your style and hopefully in the future give a heads up when they have merchandise that may be of interest and thereby possibly holding an item in your size. The key is to know your signature style, have a budget and know that having a fabulous outfit for that upcoming wedding already in your closet is going to make you feel so much more confident than frantically looking for a dress the week before – one that will most likely never be worn again.

3. Take More Risks

Bill Cunningham states in the documentary Bill Cunningham New York “A lot of people have taste, but they don’t have the daring to be creative.” So this year, why not add a bit more color, or experiment with new accessories or a hair style that may flatter your face a bit more? Again the key is to know your signature style and most importantly know who you are – then express a tad of that to the world. Don’t hide behind your clothes, let them whisper authentic musings of who you truly are.

4. Edit & Evaluate My Closet

This resolution probably should be #1, but at the beginning of the new year, take an afternoon and edit your closet. Click here for specific ways to effectively go through this process. Make a list of what you need and always carry this list with you when you are out shopping.

5. Quality for Classics

When it comes to classics, save up and splurge. In actuality, it isn’t splurging if it is something that will last for many seasons to come and work with a multitude of different outfits. After all, the premise of living a simply luxurious life is to have less, but what you do have should be of luxurious quality that impresses and comforts, helping to exude even more of your true beauty and self-confidence. 3 Simple Steps to Designing Your Best Life

Yesterday as the 2012 waved hello and introduced itself to the world, the auspiciousness of what could be in the next 366 (leap year!) infused me with child-like giddiness. While some may scoff at writing down resolutions and immediately throw up their hands in defeat, I feel this is one of the many times throughout the year to be clear about our path, and the life we want to create, or continue creating, for ourselves. As Steve Covey reminds in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (page 129), each one of us is the programmer of our lives and it only once we realize this that we can create the life we desire.

So, in accepting and stepping into the role of being our very own ideal life curators, what do you want your life to look like? Quiet, yet challenging or chaotic and restless? What do you want to feel in your being as you go about your day? Contentment, hope or frustration and fear? And what energy do you want to project into the world and others around you? Happiness and ease or cynicism and dread?

Initially, these appear to be simple questions to answer (and I highly suggest, you begin by answering these questions first before writing down in ink your resolutions), but once you are certain about your responses, the tough part is knowing how to help them come into fruition.

Let’s break down each question:

What do you want your life to look like?

In order to answer this question, you must know yourself. You must know what environments fill you up and which deplete you. For me, I need clean, organized, serene places, balanced with occasional energetic outings. Ultimately, to be productive, my home and my workplace need to be free of clutter so there is room for the people, ideas and opportunities to be welcomed inside.

Once you know what your life should look like, you need to be strong enough to edit. Adding and subtracting those things, people and jobs that are contributing or hindering your progress.

What do you want to feel in your being as you go about your day?

Once you narrow in on the feelings you want to create - intimacy, security, hope, optimism, contentment would be a few of mine - then mold your behavior. In other words, you will have to very conscious of the words and actions you display. This is where we must reel in our ego and not say everything that comes to mind. This is where we must acquire self-confidence and toss aside self-doubt.

What energy do you want to project into the world and upon others around you?

This question will come somewhat naturally once the first two questions are dealt with appropriately to achieve your desired results. When you are content with the life you are leading, once you are honest with what truly gives you joy and pleasure, fulfillment and hope, your energy will naturally be more intoxicating and inviting to others.

Each one of us has so much potential and at the same time, each one of us will create a uniquely different life than those around us, yet it is possible to be content and not jealous as long as we follow our inner yearnings and not those dictated to us by the outside world - thus creating a simply luxurious life.

So as you begin 2012, go within yourself, get quiet, and ask yourself these three simple questions (and before you write any of the answers down, be able to explain to yourself why you want what you think you want. In other words, make sure you are be authentic and not a puppet.)

Then proceed to write down your resolutions, breaking them down to smaller steps and then checking on them periodically each month (maybe each week).

I wish you great success because I know it is possible. Have patience with yourself, but be stern with yourself as well. After all, each of us is the programmer - what life will you design?
