When you look at the features added in ZBrush R2 and R2b most companies would have made it a full release and charged for it but Pixologic did not and they continue to add new features and improve existing ones at no charge. This is one of the reasons I really like Pixologic.

Hi!

Is it possible (Maya 2012) to, depending on which camera is rendered, turn certain lights on or off?

I.e. I have two cameras, one "front" and one "back" basically. I also have three light sources, one "frontLight", one "backLight" and one we could call "fillLight".

Now, if a scene is rendered with the "front" camera, I want "frontLight" turned ON, and "backLight" turned OFF. And vice versa of course. The "fillLight" will always be on, for all intents and purposes here anyway.

Now, where would I go look for how to solve this? I was hoping to find something I could do in the Hypershade or something, like connect an "currentRender" attribute of the camera to the visibility attribute of the light or something along those line.

But I have not yet found anything (I am a newbie in Maya, it's not normally my field of work) on Google or in the help that has pointed me in the right direction. Not knowing the exact terminology due to being a newb doesn't exactly help either :)

Any help appreciated!

Hey everyone,

First let me explain what i'm trying to do,
I've been a huge coaster fan for some years now and i have recently gotten access to a 3D printer.

My idea is to build a looping in maya and then let it print.

But i'm already running into major problems, my experience with maya is near to zero so i'm here for help!

Where do i start and what can i do to build a looping in maya?
Some hints or tips would be very nice!

I' ve tried to manually make a line on which 2 rods can follow, but then just isn' t accurate enough..
Is there a way to make a mathematical value for the line in which the 2 rods can follow so it will be extremely smooth?
And where do i go on from there?

Thanks in advance,
Michiel

I just realized that when using polygons with smoothing (3 key), that you get a sub-D type smoothing except on outside edge corners, see illustration. I understand that this may just be the way it is in Maya, but it's not what I'm used to.

Attachment 50525

Normally if I want sharp corners I would add more divisions.

The other thing is that this sharp cornering will disappear if I give that object thickness, behaving once more as I would expect it.

Should I just ignore this and accept it, I think the same thing happens in XSI.

Ahoi again! - I would need some help.

Either this is bug number x or I missed some additional connections to the shader network.

simple scene:
linear workflow
sphere + misss_fast_skin_maya
camera + mia_exposure_photographic
2 areaLights

= renders black

I pinned the problem down to the combination of the photographic lensShader and skinShader. it renders black until ridiculous high values within the Cm 2 Factor. in addition there seems to be no diffuse/scatter/specular/whatever color information on the skinShaded sphere. its just a flat grey from pure black to white depending on the Cm 2 Factor value.

Any workarounds to make misss_fast_skin_maya work with the photographic lensShader?

thanks in advance!

I have a question for starter. I love programming and would like to know about building plugins and Python & MEL scripts.

I have searched around but I can't find anything that directly relates to learning the language and produres for developing scripts and plugins.

I suppose it may be intuitive to only build plugins & scripts after you have developed a specific function within a Maya Project, but I thought I would see if there is anything that anyone can share regarding this matter.

Plus I wanted to test the input features of this forum.

Thank You and I hope to make collaborators here at SimplyMaya

UNDER THE HOOD:
Oceansplash uses Maya resident resources to build an oSp-engine(splash engine) for the selected object. These engines are designed to detect Maya ocean surface or pond surface(which ever the object is associated with) and the finest of the ocean's or pond's wave movements. The best part is, oSp-engines are independent of its own builder(the plugin). That means, osp-engines when once built, no longer depend on the plugin to generate splashes except for when required to edit. A saved files containing osp-engines are portable, and to open and run properly, it does not require Oceansplash plugin in any other computer.

orthographic camera attribute question

Is there any way to lock an attribute that controls zooming in and out? I have my camera set as orthographic and at a 45 degree angle pointing down for an isometric game I'm doing. It's important that this camera not move up or down or be able to zoom closer or further away. I've locked the y axis movement, but can't seem to lock the zooming capabilities. If I happen to step away from my computer, come back, forget I'm in my special rendering camera, and start panning around and zooming in and out, that would really screw up my renderings because it affects the size of the buildings in the renderings. I'm going to be taking several renders across the course of this project and I need to ensure that the models are in proportion to each other, so that's why this is vitally important.

I've looked through the channel editor and the attributes for the camera, but can't see anything changing when I zoom in and out. Worried that I might not be able to accomplish this.
