You guys know I’m obsessed with these candles – they smell SO GOOD and the small lasts forever…it makes your home smell like heaven.  I added a few extra faves, including the reed diffuser I have in my closet that makes it smell magical.  I’ve had this reed diffuser for almost one YEAR and it’s still going strong.  I think it’s going to last another year, I swear!  What I love is that the fragrance just stays around the clock and there’s no lighting/blowing out, etc. to keep the fragrance going.  I also love the soap/lotion set and the room fragrance spray – I would use that to freshen up our teen media room…ommmm, does anyone else have a teen room? Need I say more???

And now for my EASY, TASTY, and HEALTHY pasta recipe:  earlier this week I threw together a pasta salad that’s perfect for spring and summer gatherings or just an easy daily meal.  All you need is bowtie pasta, protein of your choice (I went with tequila lime shrimp from the grocery store), cheese of your choice, lime, and fresh cilantro.   How’s that for easy ingredients?

I had mine for lunch on our front porch, it was delish!  If you wanted to make this a dinner portion, I would just add a tossed salad and some garlic bread.  Easy, peasy meal.

Confession:  I don’t really enjoy cooking, so I’m always looking for ways to put together easy, tasty, and healthy meals for our gang without a lot of fuss.  Making this literally takes the length of time it takes to boil your pasta.

INGREDIENTS:

1 box of bowtie pasta

1 container of soft cheese

1 -2 lbs shrimp or protein of your choice

1/2 lime juice for 1 lb of shrimp, 1 lime for 2 lbs of shrimp- I use fresh lime

Cilantro amount of your choice

PREPARATION:

Boil pasta, drain, and mix in your cheese – I love using goat cheese because it’s so creamy and better for you than cow’s milk.

Toss in peeled and deveined shrimp  – I get the tequila lime shrimp from our grocery store and love it!

Squeeze lime and toss all ingredients together.

Top with cilantro and serve chilled!  Serves 3-4.

This is my date night look from yesterday…sassy!

JEANS: My super soft, comfy jeans are on sale 40% TODAY only – they are butter soft and super comfy.  Not sure about you, but it was time to update my jeans look (yep, I resisted) and I must have tried on 20+ different brands and styles with not much luck.  I ended up loving these well-priced, mid-rise jeans, which feels less “90’s Full-House” and are more my vibe. Wearing a size 0 – they have great stretch and aren’t scratchy or uncomfortable, which is a dealbreaker for me.  I got WAY too spoiled wearing leggings during quarantine, so I really go for comfort now, ha ha.  

SWEATER: You may recognize my sweater from previous IG posts – I now have it in two different colors because it’s so versatile, goes with everything, and is super soft/cozy.  Are you seeing a comfort theme here?  I’m wearing a small and tucked it in a little in the front.  If you untuck, this sweater has a nice asymmetrical line and even covers the derrière – perfect to throw on over leggings and sneaks/flats/slides for zipping around.

HEELS: These heels are my go-to (you’ve seen them a million times) and they’re super comfy and well-priced (under $70).  I love the lines and versatility of these guys, and have worn them with pants, skirts, dresses, and jeans.  They’re a great wardrobe staple!

PURSE:  I linked to the updated purse because mine is a little older  – and I use this bag all the time.  It’s a great wardrobe staple for all seasons, is lightweight, and a terrific crossbody for travel or day to day use.  The tassels are removable, which I love, so you can easily change the look!

My husband and I zipped up to Atlanta this weekend to help out his mom around her house, which was really rewarding and fun.  She was so excited to have some simple things done around her home, and we were happy to help.  Instead of heading right back home, we decided to take the next day for ourselves and sneak in a date night.  I checked out the JCrew sale section in Atlanta, since ours is closed, and found two items that happened to be a great “out on the town” look – simple slim pants and a chic top.  If you’d like to look at my try-on in video, I posted it in my Instagram stories over here.

Fashion disclaimer:  I will always blog about ruffles and could easily qualify for a ruffle-addiction clinic, if that were a thing.  I’ll be the gal rocking ruffles into her 90’s, haha.  Ruffles are SO FUN and feminine!!  They’re timeless.

Here’s what I found:

This ruffle black top on clearance (I grabbed an XXS) on sale for $21.  This top is ADORABLE on!  It also comes in hot pink, which is super fun.  I did try it on in leopard and that was a nope – too bulky and the fabric was uncomfortable.  Something about the black is super sleek and very flattering.

The pants!  Been needing some slim (and current) well-priced black pants and really liked these.  They are currently on a 50% off promo.  They super comfy and straight leg enough to work for my style.  They give in just the right areas and have a nice tailored look.  They don’t pinch, rub, flare, or do anything crazy when you sit, stand, or walk, haha.  These would be flattering on any body type, in my opinion.

About me and pants:  I own maybe 5 pair of pants.  I DREAD trying on pants and don’t like the way most pants look on me.  For whatever reason, I find it hard to find pants that fit and look right on my body.  I’ll do anything to avoid trying them on because it’s so hard to find good ones.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Don’t EVEN get me started on not being able to comfortably wear pants after living in loungewear so much in 2020….right?!  Needless to say, I was SO excited to find a pair that were a great fit, comfy, current, AND well priced.

I paired the top  and pants together and loved the black on black look.  Threw on some black heels (only thing I had in my suitcase) and it was a great look.  Normally I would throw on some heels in a fun pattern or color, but the black worked out well. I wore this outfit to get my haircut, since our dinner reservations were right after my cut, and my stylist commented on how chic it looked as soon as I walked in – he’s got a great eye..so that boosted my confidence in the black on black.

Can’t wait to pair up these versatile pants with some of my spring tops!

It’s so good to have a few soft sweaters in lighter colors to keep the body warm, but still look springy.  Found a perfect one that comes in 5 colors!  I’ll show you pics of my dressing room try on and also my friend (who’s a little more petite than me) in this sweater.

Backstory:  my bestie and I went on our usual “Mexican Night” double date and I loved the off-the-shoulder super soft sweater she was wearing…the color, interesting lines, and style.  And yes, you see I caved and got the JCrew jacket even though I have a jacket sickness.  All night I kept commenting on how adorable her sweater was – and the color was so pretty on her.

The next week we went shopping to peek at the sweater…it’s here.  I never go in Express, no particular reason, just don’t shop there as much as my regular haunts, but the whole store was having a 50% off promo so it was fun to look!  Tried on the sweater and loved it.  I can’t begin tell you how soft this thing is.  It’s like butter, and what a great winter-to-spring transitional piece.  I popped on these clearance wedges for a peek (paid $16!!!) and will link at bottom of the post.

SOOOOO I’m now trying a new approach – fast and fun posts that coordinate with my instagram account!   Yep, no overthinking or hours sourcing the “perfect” images for a post.  New year, new me, ha ha.  I’ll start small and simple and see how it works – aiming for one post every week.

HOW IT WORKS:  whenever I see something I think you might like, I’ll share it here and link the post on my IG stories or IG post.  I really really enjoy the convenience, speed, and daily connection on instagram (not so much editing, sourcing, etc.), so maybe creatively merging the blog with IG will be a manageable idea.  Gonna try it out!

I’m sharing some personal thoughts on blogging and a few changes in my life PLUS some great-buys I found for fall (with try-on pics)!  If you’re more interested in the fashion part, just scroll down past our chat.

You all know I love connecting with you here.  And over the past few months I’ve received many sweet messages saying things like “are you okay,” “miss your posts,” and “are you coming back???”  The biggest answer I have right now is yes, I’m doing great!  I’m pretty active on instagram – many of you follow me there.  Since my last blog post, there have been times I would mentally start writing a post during a quiet moment then shake my head and think “no, that doesn’t sound like content anyone would find interesting.”  One week turned into two, then it was a month, now it’s been six.

At the turn of the new year I began a new journey.  I evaluated social media and blogs and what all of that meant to me.  More importantly, what kind of example am I setting to my kiddos on social media?  Don’t know about you, but sometimes blogs and/or instagram posts can feel pretty ego-driven and/or overly materialistic, which gives me an icky feeling.  I find that when I look at some content out there, it’s either a turn-off or easy to forget my own blessings and slip into comparison thoughts or a sense that my path isn’t where it should be.  By February I stepped away from blogs and edited who I followed on instagram.  In my rare alone time, I started listening to great podcasts and powerful audio books during long drives.  I spent more time in nature and started to feel much more happy, rejuvenated, and whole as I focused on things in life that REALLY matter.

We all know blogs have changed (we’ve talked about it several times here) and let’s face it, social media has become an ego monster.  For many, blogs are a business – and I say that with no judgement.  Turning a blog into a business makes sense because the average post takes 2 – 3+ hours to compose and it’s fair for someone to get paid for their time to research and share quality information with their readers.  As our family schedule has gotten busier, my personal quiet time windows have gotten smaller  I knew it was time to choose how I spent any precious extra alone time.  I chose to invest that extra time pursuing fitness goals and expanding my personal/spiritual growth.  This helped me shift into a mindset that sees the unfolding of good/God in everything and everyone I encounter.  It’s been really nice!

The other two BIG THINGS I did for the first 3 months of this year is completely stopped shopping – no Anthro, no TJ Maxx, no sales, etc. AND I wiped out refined sugar (besides birthday week)!!!  You may be thinking, “holy shiitake, Seleta – did you turn into a Monk?”  Almost, ha ha.  Actually the more time I spent away from the pursuit of material things and sugar consumption, the more free I felt.  I began to focus even more on gratitude, grace, and growth.

All that being said, I have missed writing and connecting with you here, but realized that right now is a season rich with family activities and dynamic personal growth.  Instagram has been an easy and great way to connect with many of you and I do enjoy that a lot.  Feel free to follow me there @simplyseleta.

As I stepped away from the blog, I also starting thinking “what do I want to represent on a blog and/or social media?”  I’ve always been myself on both platforms, but as blogs continue to change and comments from posts here started to die down, I really gave it all serious thought.  Unlike 10 years ago, running a blog now requires strategic content planning, professional photos, hours of research, personal assistants, and more.

I’m thinking about where I fit in on all that.

I made the decision to keep my instagram (and blog for now) as long as I share posts and messages with positive, authentic, helpful, fun, and relatable posts that connect with you on a REAL level.  Yes, that includes fun and stylish items I may occasionally find on sale, etc.  So for now I’m posting on instagram and I’ll pop in here when my schedule permits.

Now for some FASHION TALK! 

I always feel good about sharing deals because let’s face it, we all need clothes and it’s great to find something that’s classic, stylish and affordable!  I found some great sale items over the weekend and shared pics wearing them on my IG stories – the response on IG was so strong that I thought it would be great to share here too.   I bought all of these pieces in the stores, so at the time I posted them, I didn’t have links on anything.  I did some digging and found links so you could grab any items you like for yourself.  Here we go!

First – here’s an outfit idea with items you probably already have in your closet:  quality leggings and a tank top.  A black tank/black top and leggings are my go-tos for an outfit base year round.  You can easily build on that by adding in a jacket, cardi, wrap, scarf, etc. and sassy shoes!  I had a ton of messages on IG about my silver shoes, but unfortunately I don’t have a link – they’re old.  

I picked up the cutest suede booties for less than $40.  They are soooooo comfy and fun!  I’m not usually a fan of booties on myself, but they had me with the girly bow in the back and nice fit. I couldn’t find them on Nordstrom Rack’s site, but miraculously found them on this site!  They are pricier than what I paid, but still a good deal!  Let me know if you end up ordering them.  They run true to size.

Here’s a fun fall outfit – a man’s oxford and skinny jeans with girly booties.  I’m wearing my husband’s button down and this goes great with slim jeans.  White top with denim is my one of my all-time favorite combos.  The little bag was a special birthday gift from a dear friend.

Found this pinstripe JCrew top on sale at Nordstrom Rack for next to nothing.  Couldn’t find it on their site, but did find this classic white windowpane Madewell top with tie sleeves on clearance I LOVE for $20.

Also spotted this striped JCrew wrap top (size small is left) which is equally adorable for year round.

Found this super soft and baggy cashmere sweater on sale with an extra 40% off.  I’m wearing the medium.  LOVE it!!

1.  Leopard Tote: At long last I found a cute tote that fits my many ballet supplies and also works well with my frequent all-black outfits. You can find it here.  Good news/bad news on this tote:  The good news is it’s only $8!!  The note-so-great news is it’s on back order til May.  But you can order now and enjoy it to kick off your summer! Somehow I scored one when I was out doing a JCrew return on our last Atlanta trip…and you can see I just came from a ballet class.  #bunhead

2.  Top 15 Brain Foods:  Right now I’m working hard on some personal fitness goals and what our family eats day-to-day with their athletic and academic schedules.  Some days it’s so hard to not just bust out a frozen pizza and be done with it, but you gotta fight to eat right….you know?!  I LOVE this helpful list that explains what foods are best for our brains and why.  I always find it so interesting to learn about the “why” of anything that relates to our wellness and nutrition.  This list has some great foods on it….I can handle everything on it except for item #2, ha ha.

Bonus:  one of the brain foods might be something green that you frequently see on my IG stories.  That being said, THIS Avocado toast with Cilantro Lime Cashew Cream recipe looks absolutely divine!  Cashew cream recipe here.  I want to make this over the weekend.  Gluten-free + vegan!  My vegan and vegetarian readers are gonna love this. 

3.  TURN series on Netflix:  If you like period dramas and/or American Revolution history, I’ve got a good one for you.  While waiting for what felt like forever for The Crown (still waiting) and Victoria to return, my husband stumbled upon this period drama produced a few years ago about the Revolutionary war and America’s first band of spies who “turned the tide” during its fight for independence.  Lots of twists and turns (ahem) that will keep you guessing.  The story is true and based on real characters, which makes it extra fascinating.  My husband and I are both hooked!

It’s not quite at the Downton level (is anything, really?), but it does have great acting, well-developed characters and story line, and excellent scenery and costumes.  Personally, I’m more intrigued with the male characters in this series than I am the females – for whatever reason I just haven’t been able to really connect with the women characters quite as much.  I do love Abigail and wish I could see more of her story and struggle.  Be aware there are some graphic war scenes and adult content – not recommended for young viewers.  It’s fascinating to see real characters from the past come alive in a show during such a tumultuous, scary, and exciting time in our country’s history.  It’s become our ritual at night to watch an episode after the kids turn in.  It was so good that we’re watching it all over a second time around…yes it’s THAT good and also because we would often drift off during the middle or tail end of an episode as we’re usually so tired at night.  Give this one a try!
