In the photo above (of course) I am in my <a href="http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/ga508.html" target="_blank">Atlanta Lab Rescue</a> gear. If you follow ANY of my social media, <a href="http://abjphoto.com/blog" target="_blank">or business blog</a>, you see a lot of dog activity….both mine and rescue. Getting involved with the rescue was an easy decision. Most of my adult life has been spent volunteering, or working in missions. Mostly though Young Life, but also through our church. After losing my black lab Tess it felt natural to thrust myself into healing through helping others, and in this case other dogs. Some people have the same experience with their animals as I have, they are extensions of the family, and some walk important journeys with us through seasons of life. I have had some dogs that have impacted my life more than others. Anyway, the point is that healing for me came through helping. And, it added additional joy into my life. Friends that I would not have met any other way, and different kinds of friends, those that I would not have met without this new connection. And, in a city like Atlanta it is hard to meet <strong>good</strong> friends that were not already friends from high school or college.</p> <p>Another major volunteer action that has helped me over the last year has been volunteering as a group leader through our church. The way that the Lord intervened and brought us all together was a modern day miracle. And, almost 10 months later we are still together, we added new ladies, and we are still enjoying our time together. Stepping out and being vulnerable really adds value to relationships. I am SO thankful for these women in my life. They make the hard days easier, and I hope that they feel the same. (I think they do)</p> <p>I hope that you are able to find YOUR unique volunteer opportunities. I hope they bring you added JOY! And, I hope that you see a glimpse of how much life is really added when you start giving away your time to others, it is not always about your wallet.</p> <p>If you have other volunteer ideas that you would like to share we would love to hear from you! It was a sweet time to visit with friends, surprise my sister-in-law at camp, and enjoy the peace of a mountain rain shower.</p> <p>Sometimes as life changes and the pace picks up, it is sweet to go back to a place where so much of my life took place – where so much “growing up” happened. I will share more photos of my trip later this week. So, as luck would have it, I found this awesome piece for $10!!! I love the little thrift shops in Roswell, they never disappoint! However, I do always seem to find the diamond in the rough, something that may look like you might not want to touch it. But, to me, it is JUST RIGHT!</p> <p>Here is how I took this little green cabinet from drab to fab!</p> <p><a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/diy-simplysouthernblog-1.jpg"></a></p> <p>As you can see, the original color may not have been that bad, but BOY was this cabinet nasty! I had to scrape out all kinds of goo…thank goodness for David’s tools! I made sure to wear a mask…</p> <p><a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/diy-simplysouthernblog-3.jpg"></a></p> <p>I thought I only had one knob for this beauty, but as true thrift luck would have it, the other was inside WITH the screw to attach it back! And, yea, they were brass knobs! They just needed a little TLC!</p> <p><a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/diy-simplysouthernblog-4.jpg"></a></p> <p>I looked online for how to clean such small pieces. I thought I would try something a little extreme- what did I have to lose? And, after my last <a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/2593/diy-brass-table-upcycle.html" target="_blank">brass table project</a> I was pretty sure what I was working with. All you need is a half-n-half mix of vinegar and salt. Let the hardware soak for a little while, and then wipe clean with a soft rag. Make sure to protect your hands! And, only pour down drain after it has been diluted!</p> <p><a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/diy-simplysouthernblog-5.jpg"></a></p> <p>The color above is a little off, due to my iPhone, but they turned out great! The next step for the cabinet was a coat of primer, and I made sure to finish the inside day one so that I could start using it sooner. Sometime with these projects the paint is sticky for a few days.</p> <p><a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/diy-simplysouthernblog-6.jpg"></a></p> <p>At the end of day one I wanted to make sure I also had the legs painted so that on day two I could prop up the cabinet and finish my main paint job. I am super pumped about this find! We were able to stay down there for 5 days! Post finals, and my last day at the Capitol, this was just what we needed! The first day was a little rainy, but that was ok, we needed to force ourselves to slow down and really enjoy the break. We love Orange Beach because we always eat GREAT food, we fish, we visit David’s grandparents near by in Pensacola, and we soak up some sunshine. My client really wanted to include flowers in her session, and the outdoors. After some rain delays and missing the azaleas and trees in full bloom we improvised. We met at a park with yellow flowers covering it, and I brought along these beauties growing wild on their own in our yard! Oh, it felt so good to rake up those final dead leaves, and add some color to the perennials in the pots outside. David added grass seed to the yard a couple weekends ago, and it is fun to see the grass growing! No one tells you, when looking to buy your first home, about how hard it is to grow grass! We have tried sod, and seed. But, with all the activity and shade in the back yard it has been hard to maintain. Oh the joys of home ownership!</p> <p><a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/potupdate-1.jpg"></a>Over the past few weekends David has built a few pallet projects for the outdoors. Below you can see his bird feeder, and my wooden pot holder.</p> <p><a href="http://simplysouthernblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/potupdate-2.jpg"></a>I am excited to continue planting season, and outdoor activities over the next few weeks! It is from Papa, and it has the best funky shape and color!
