ENG: This October 2009, Australia has entered a war against the million camels in the country. They double each 8 years. The first camel was imported from the Canary Islands in 1840. Now I understand why last year I had not so friendly encounters with these massive 6 foot - 2000 pounds animals. So if you are in Australia, don't hesitate to eat wild camel meat, it contains low fat and it's excellent. You'll do a favor to local jobs and desertification.

ENG: Here's the final route I made across the length of the Simpson desert. I finished with 10-12 liters of water and little food. At that time, my body was used receive less water and I was fine with 2 to 2,5 liters per day. I had no time left (had to take my plane) to finish walking around lake Eyre. I believe it would have been possible but in that case I would have been entering deep survival and put my body into high dehydration.

I just got back in Belgium yesterday and now I'm back at work. I haven't told you everything from the adventure as I keep some parts for a book and some of it has been filmed in HD too. I have almost 2000 photos and above 3 hours of film. So I'm very happy. The adventure did not finish in william creek. Coming back home WITH the entire Camwheel desert cart was an adventure as well. You can subscribe to this blog on the right side also so you'll also know for future exhibitions and slideshows.

Back to Sydney

ENG: Sunday must and is sunny! It was hard work to hitch hike and get my plance in Alice Springs to Sydney. I'll take another plane back to Europe in a few minutes. This morning I finally met Lucas Trihey, the Aussie adventurer who became the first person to walk the width of the Simpson desert unsupported (June 2006). We discussed my path and I showed him the CamWheel. He helped me a lot with his knowledge and gave advices for me to be successful. Later we went to my main Aussie sponsor Activate Outdoors. They have been my first sponsor ever and are always helping out new adventurers with original adventure ideas.

William Creek

ENG: Hi all. I was picked up this morning at 9.45 am by Jim who drove me back to his home -The peak cattle station- and have a warm shower, massive lunch -meat pot, cake, tea- and clean my stinky clothes. Jim lives with his girlfriend Sarah. The trip took over 2 hours and we left at 3 pm towards William Creek. I am now staying in a caravan behind the property of Trevor, the owner of Wrights air. I'm fine and the Camwheel too. I hope to get a lift tomorrow back to Alice Springs. I thank Etienne G. who has been working on the blog and more for the past 6 weeks. I now back the commands :)

ENG: Well people, Louis-Philippe has reached his goal! He arrived yesterday in the early evening at the northern tip of lake Eyre, which means the end of the Simpson desert. He is the first man ever to cross the world’s longest parallel sand dunes desert unassisted in its length (North-South). That is something to cheer about! He made really good progress in the last few days as the food reserves were getting depleted. Fortunately he still has enough water.

He just agreed on a pick up by the manager of the "The Peak" cattle station ranch tomorrow at 10 am at a water hole for the trip back to William Creek. We will keep you posted on his return. Talking about lake Eyre, Sébastien Héritier, a French adventurer who gave advice on the lake to Louis-Philippe, said: “Lake Eyre is dead. There is so little life there that even death has fled the area”.

Before leaving for his trip in July he had agreed to be do so-called cognitive tests with a French scientist. Among other things it involves naming as many words starting with a particular letter in just one minute, naming colours,… That scientist is currently studying the human mind in extreme circumstances. Louis-Philippe was therefore the ideal person. We will be posting more on that later.

The end is in sight

ENG: LouPhi’s position yesterday was South 26° 51 and East 137° 30’. In 24 hours he walked 30 km and is very happy about it. Although his potential success had been jeopardized at the start due to the slow progress he now sounds confident he can succeed. Whatever happens he does not intend to go further south than Macumba Station. Food and water supplies are in line with expectations. His feet are aching and blisters have appeared, but nothing to be worried about. And finally landscapes are so nice it was worth going through all this. Louis-Philippe thought he had found a water lake, but it was only the reflection of the sky on the salt lake.

Making big progress

ENG: Louis-Philippe has entered the Simpson Desert National Park and reached the so-called WAA line. His position yesterday was South 26° 34' and East 137° 27'. He has taken superb pictures of the wonderful landscapes there. He said the sand colour has gone from red to beige in the area he is currently crossing where small lakes abound. As expected he drinks less and less water as his body has adjusted to the extreme desert conditions. He feels at ease with the desert and has finally found what he was looking for when planning his trip.

He is now heading South for the next two weeks or so. The cart is now much lighter, there are no longer any spinifex bushes on his way, and the full moon on 15 August will help him a lot. This is why he is making big progress which is absolutely essential if he wants to win his challenge. He will not be going to William Creek (southwest of lake Eyre) as first anticipated and will probably stop at Macumba Station

Raising the Aboriginal flag !

ENG: Three weeks into his trek Louis-Philippe has lost quite some weight and fat. He feels he is slowly starting to understand how the desert works and is enjoying his time there. At night it is quite cold. After walking a full day he usually stops for a while around 8-9 pm local time and then resumes his journey. In the next few days he will be taking full advantage of the full moon that will allow him to walk for a few more hours in ideal circumstances. Before falling asleep he watches stars.

And this news just in: Louis-Philippe reached the geographical centre of the desert (position 25° 22’ East and 137° 05’ South) and raised the Aboriginal flag (see picture) on the pole symbolizing his respect for the deep connection that the Aboriginal people have for this desert. This is a cause close to his heart which he kept repeating before leaving for his trip. He is now racing towards Poeppel’s Corner as his cart is much lighter. Still 2 weeks to go before food and water supplies dry up.

25th parallel

ENG: Louis-Philippe should have crossed the 25th parallel yesterday evening and hopes to reach the centre of the desert by Wednesday or Thursday. He has made good progress during the weekend thanks to the cart getting lighter. He has drunk a lot of water in a few days as the weather has been hot without any wind blowing. The water supplies remain under control, though.

Chased by camels

ENG: Now an anecdote to keep you entertained! Louis-Philippe spotted a group of camels coming towards him. At first he was not suspicious and allowed them to come closer but soon enough they were getting quite close and gathering like a Roman legion just before an attack. He then went to hide but figured the only way to get out alive was to flee… which he did with the camels chasing him! Fortunately they stopped after a while. He came to understand that they were probably trying to protect their young.

Crossing lakes

ENG: Louis-Philippe took a big gamble this weekend. He entered a place captain Charles Sturt once described as ‘hell’ (thorns everywhere, big humps) and after walking just a few kilometers on 25 July, much below his anticipated daily average, he decided to try something to make more progress. He cut the weight in half, carrying one part on one day, coming back during the night with an empty CamWheel and get to move the second half on the next day. The challenge was to find the way back with his GPS as he left the food, tent and sleeping bag in the second part. He called a few hours afterwards to confirm he had succeeded. Talk about a risk taker! The good news is that he crossed the 24th parallel and that the progress will be easier in the southern part. Next goal: the centre of the desert.

No man’s land from now on

<img alt="a Such a prickle to puncture my airmattress.
ENG: Louis-Philippe met Aboriginals on 22 July. From then on it will be a long time before he comes across any human life again. On 23 July he walked 15 km instead of the planned 25 km. Despite being 4 days behind schedule, he keeps a good spirit. To make up for lost ground he walks by night for a few more hours thanks to his GPS and stars. It is then very cold, but the day time weather is nice. He has damaged his air mattress, which forces him to sleep on the ground. I guess you can imagine he has had bad nights, but he sounds confident he can make it. Coming up next: more on his trip through the National Park to cross in the Northern Territory.

Hot weather despite winter time

ENG: Daytime temperatures reached 35° during the weekend. Making headway is quite difficult because of spinifex, grass typical of arid Australia: two or sometimes three tries are needed to get over it. The cart required a few repairs, but is holding on. And finally, the water supply is being kept under control. So no reason to worry too much!

Wish him luck!

ENG: Louis-Philippe’s long journey has kicked off. He left Alice Springs at 1pm Australian time in a 4WD and was dropped off near Jervois (see pictures). The real adventure begins now as he will do the rest by foot with a cart weighing a grand total of… 210 kg! He has now entered the Aboriginal land called Atnetye and is now heading for Atula Creek which he hopes to reach it by tomorrow evening. He sounds relaxed and very upbeat. Stay tuned!
