So first things first, The Sims 5 is very early in its development and has been titled “Project Rene”, symbolising renewal and rebirth and joy and yadda yadda yadda.

In the early gameplay demo, we saw a return of The Sims 3-esque customisation of build mode objects, including the ability to modify the shape of items themselves. Okurrrrrr v cool!

Thankfully, you’ll have the choice on playing single player or with friends. Whilst we’re glad that we won’t be forced into a multiplayer game, we’re interested in seeing how The Sims metaverse will end up working.

The Sims team are also developing tools to play the same game across multiple devices, so you can furnish your dream apartment whilst on the bus home from your soul-crushing 9-5… neat!

But don’t get too excited just yet, its going to be a long road until we can finally get to play with Miss Rene. There’ll be a ton of snippets and sneak peaks along the way, but it’s likely going to be a few years before The Sims 5 is finally released.

It’s refreshing to see the commitment of an open dialogue from The Sims team as they continue to develop the next iteration of the franchise.

Keen observers tracking EA’s development of face-scanning tech have uncovered fresh updates on the future of creating Sims.

As it stands, AI scientists at EA have been busy building and developing a prototype of tech that will allow Simmers to create Sims from a single image.

There’s a lot of detail in the article, which explains how the team has been using machine learning to import real faces into the Simverse, as well as discussing some of the challenges it will have to overcome.

This certainly is an exciting glimpse at the future of creating Sims within The Sims 5. However, it wouldn’t the first to use machine learning in this way.

The most notable example, DALL·E, creates images from a text prompt and has proven to be somewhat controversial.

Whatever it is, it’s certainly something big. I mean, it probably costs a pretty penny to deface Warner Bros film lot in Sims-themed graffiti.

For those thinking that The Sims 5 will be announced at impending Sims Summit, it makes for compelling evidence.

Sims as a service? Potentially…

It has been a long eight years since the Sims 4 was released, and a lot has changed on how we all buy our games.

As anticipation builds for the announcement of The Sims 5, insiders are increasingly certain that the next instalment will be “live service”.

But what does this mean? Well, not really much at the moment. Live service games are designed to keep players engaged over long periods of time.

If you’re thinking that already sounds like The Sims 4 then you’re not alone. In 2016, EA explained that The Sims 4 is already a live service game.

So, what does being a live service mean then? All it should really mean to you is that The Sims 4 gets more frequent updates to address issues, as well as ongoing free content additions so that players are interested in checking back in and seeing what’s new from time to time. 

If that is the case, why do we care? Like many things, it’s really about money.

The Sims franchise has always sought to maintain engagement amongst Simmers. We’re used to regular expansion packs, and now, stuff packs, game packs, kits etc. This format feels outdated given the advent of subscription-based game passes or free-to-play base games with paid additional content.

It very well could be that a monthly subscription would grant access to The Sims 5, with content releases being made available on a rolling basis.

In our view, this would be a bitter pill for many Simmers to swallow. But for a franchise as big as The Sims, EA see more than enough appetite for this model. I mean, they already did subscription based gaming back in the day with The Sims Online!

Strap in, Simmers – we’re going behind the Sims…

Speculation involving an announcement involving The Sims 5 has been ramping up over the past weeks and now EA have conveniently teased their Behind the Sims Summit.

In typical fashion not much information has been given away for free, with the exception of The Sims 4 itself losing its £17.99 price tag from 18 October.

Whilst that is all well and good, what we found most interesting was the promise of seeing what lies ahead for The Sims Franchise.

We’ll be sharing more about what’s in the works during a special-edition stream, Behind The Sims Summit on October 18, 2022 at 10 am PDT via The Sims YouTube and Twitch channels, also available on demand!

Hmm, suspicious… could we finally receive confirmation that The Sims 5 is on the way? Maybe we’ll even be lucky enough to see a trailer for the game or some official gameplay.

Whatever happens on 18 October, we just hope that any future trailer for The Sims 5 can match up to our favourite Sims teaser released waaaaay back in 2003.
