Today on my Facebook wall I saw this shared photo:

The first thing I thought was, are you f***ing kidding me? Can this be true? So, using some logical keywords in google I tried to find out. And soon I found this:

Really?? Using someones elses photo in a completely different context to reach your goal? To use lies and shocking photo’s to make people do what you want them to do?

One of the comments below the facebook photo actually says almost everything I was thinking:

“…” I support ethical farming practices. “…” But I HATE BEING LIED TO and I’m SICK and TIRED of “activists” fabricating LIES and spreading misinformation to incite and manipulate the uninformed. The caption in this photo has been proven again and again on this thread to be UNTRUE. It’s a complete fabrication from an ethically challenged activist who has hijacked a CHINESE photo from the Reuters news website and added a blatantly false backstory. WAKE UP!! Lying to people is a great way to make them angry and distrustful, NOT sympathetic to your cause. STOP BEING PART OF THE PROBLEM!! Your lack of honesty and integrity distracts from what would otherwise be a worthwhile cause. “…”

Some people I know are vegetarians, but there is such a big difference in the way they deal with their lifestyles. One of my friends feels the need to attack everyone who eats meat, calls them ignorant and stupid and accuses them of not caring about anything but themselves. This person likes to tell the non-vegetarians what to do, which is: stop eating meat!
Another friend doesn’t force her opinion on everyone around her. If people are interested, she informs them about why she doesn’t eat meat, what it is exactly which she is against and what the alternatives are. She tells this to whoever wants to listen and is interested.

I prefer the informative friend over the aggressive one. I think it is better to educate people in a normal way than to force them to do something into chancing their live without them knowing why exactly. Showing shocking photo’s/video’s is (in my opinion) also a way of forcing people.

As for me: I eat meat. I eat meat once a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. I always try to buy everything organic. I say almost, because it’s not always possible, for example; there are very few organic pizza’s (and I love pizza). I never eat products which have palm oil in them, and therefore spend a lot of time in supermarkets scanning the ingredients. I always choose organic eggs from free ranging chickens, if those are not available, then no eggs. When leaving the store I put all my stuff in my ‘Body shop’ shopping bag which I brought from home. I recycle everything and give old clothes/furniture to charity instead of throwing it away…

The Aggressive vegetarian would have attacked me already because of the first sentence in that story (I eat meat), but Informative vegetarian would be impressed by all the other things I do to live as green as I can right now and would tell me what else I could do to improve my green lifestyle even more.

You cannot make people do what you want them to do, especially not when you shock them or force your opinion on them. Be the intelligent person and give people your arguments on why they should change their lifestyle and then let them decide for themselves. The sad thing is, you cannot reach everyone. Some people just don’t want to change. But at least you tried in a decent way without losing anyone’s respect.

Just like we shouldn’t force animals to live in confined spaces and to do what we need them to do, we also cannot force people to live in the way we want them to live. But we can teach them and hope that they will learn to make their lifes a bit more greener.

Keep this philosophy in mind the next time you either hear some gossip, or are about to repeat a rumour.

In ancient Greece (469 – 399 BC) Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said, ‘Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?’

‘Wait a moment,’ Socrates replied. ‘Before you tell me I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.’

‘Triple filter?’ replied the acquaintance!

‘That’s right,’ Socrates continued. ‘Before you talk to me about my student let’s take a moment to filter what you’re going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?’

‘No,’ the man said, ‘actually I just heard about it and…’

‘All right,’ said Socrates. ‘So you don’t really know if it’s true or not.’

‘Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?

‘No, on the contrary…’

‘So,’ Socrates continued, ‘you want to tell me something bad about him, even though you’re not certain it’s true?’

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued. ‘You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter – the filter of Usefulness.’ Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?’

‘No, not really.’

‘Well,’ concluded Socrates, ‘if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?’

The man was defeated and ashamed. This is the reason Socrates was such a brilliant philosopher and held in such high esteem.

It also explains why he never found out that Plato was having an affair his wife.
