今回翻訳してみたのは、イギリスの新聞「The Independence」の、"Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from cars"。

この記事は、国連食糧農業機関の「Livestock’s Long Shadow（家畜が落とす長い影）」という、超有名な報告書についての報道です。これが公表されたとき、ヨーロッパなどではトップニュース扱いでしたが（私は当時BBCラジオをリアルタイムで聴いていました・・・）、日本では全く報道されていないので、翻訳してみました♪

あまり時間をかけないで翻訳したので、ぜんぜん名文ではありません・・・('~')

車のCO2排出よりも地球環境に有害な、牛からの「排出物」

世界最大の環境破壊の原因と向き合おう。それは車や、飛行機や、ジョージ・ブッシュなどではなく、牛である。

国連の報告書によると、気候、森林、野生生物にとって最大の脅威は、世界全体で急速に数を増している畜産牛であることが特定された。畜産牛はまた、酸性雨や外来種の移入、砂漠化や酸欠海域の発生、河川や飲料水の汚染や珊瑚礁の破壊といった、その他の環境破壊の主要な原因でもあると考えられている。

国連食料農業機関（FAO）による400ページに及ぶ報告書Livestock’s Long Shadow（家畜が落とす長い影）」では、牛のほかに羊、ニワトリ、ブタ、ヤギについての調査がなされている。しかし、ほぼ全ての事例において、全世界で１５億頭になる牛が最大の環境破壊の原因とされている。地球温暖化の原因となる温室効果ガスのうち１８％は畜産業によるものであり、車や飛行機などの全ての輸送機関からの排出量を合わせた数値を上回る。

家畜の餌を成長させる肥料を製造するための燃料、食肉の生産と輸送、そして放牧による森林伐採は、最も一般的な温室効果ガスである二酸化炭素の排出量のうち９％を産出している。またそれ以外に、二酸化炭素の２０倍もの温室効果があるメタンの排出量のうち３分の１が、家畜のゲップや糞尿から発生している。

家畜はそれ以外にも１００種類以上にものぼる汚染ガスを産出しており、酸性雨の主な原因の一つであるアンモニアの排出量全体のうち３分の２以上を占める。

報告書はまた、大規模放牧が世界的な森林破壊の重要な動因であり、過放牧によって牧草地のうち５分の１が砂漠に変えられたとも述べている。また、牛の放牧は大量の地下水を必要とする。牛乳１リットルを生産するために、なんと９９０リットルもの膨大な水が費やされている。

飼育場からの廃水と餌を育てるために使われる肥料によって、水質が栄養過多になり、雑草が他の生物を死滅させる原因となっている。また、殺虫剤や家畜の飼育に使われる抗生剤・ホルモン剤が飲料水に混入し、人々の健康を危険に晒している。

汚染物質は海へ流れ込み、珊瑚礁を破壊し、生物のいない酸欠海域「デッドゾーン」を発生させている。そのうちの一つは２万１千平方キロメートルにもなり、合衆国の牛肉生産による廃水がミシシッピ川から流れ込んでいるメキシコ湾に位置している。

この報告書は、抜本的な改革が行われない限り、将来の食肉の需要増加に伴い、この家畜による甚大な被害は2050年までに現在の二倍以上に増加すると予測している。

Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from cars

Meet the world's top destroyer of the environment. It is not the car, or the plane,or even George Bush: it is the cow.

A United Nations report has identified the world's rapidly growing herds of cattle as the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. And they are blamed for a host of other environmental crimes, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species, from producing deserts to creating dead zones in the oceans, from poisoning rivers and drinking water to destroying coral reefs.

The 400-page report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, also surveys the damage done by sheep, chickens, pigs and goats. But in almost every case, the world's 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.

Burning fuel to produce fertiliser to grow feed, to produce meat and to transport it - and clearing vegetation for grazing - produces 9 per cent of all emissions of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. And their wind and manure emit more than one third of emissions of another, methane, which warms the world 20 times faster than carbon dioxide.

Livestock also produces more than 100 other polluting gases, including more than two-thirds of the world's emissions of ammonia, one of the main causes of acid rain.

Ranching, the report adds, is "the major driver of deforestation" worldwide, and overgrazing is turning a fifth of all pastures and ranges into desert.Cows also soak up vast amounts of water: it takes a staggering 990 litres of water to produce one litre of milk.

Wastes from feedlots and fertilisers used to grow their feed overnourish water, causing weeds to choke all other life. And the pesticides, antibiotics and hormones used to treat them get into drinking water and endanger human health.

The pollution washes down to the sea, killing coral reefs and creating "dead zones" devoid of life. One is up to 21,000sqkm, in the Gulf of Mexico, where much of the waste from US beef production is carried down the Mississippi.

The report concludes that, unless drastic changes are made, the massive damage done by livestock will more than double by 2050, as demand for meat increases.

(日本語)　テレビ捨てたい

軽く日記のみ・・・

現在、テレビとビデオデッキをどうすれば捨てられるかを調べ中。10年前のものですが、全く壊れていなくて、使用期間も短く元気いっぱいです・・・
札幌市内で、楽に無料で廃棄するにはどうするのがベストか？
もう古くて何の役にもたたなさそうなテレビとビデオデッキだが、ほんの少しでもいいからお金になる可能性もあるのだろうか・・・？

確かに、今後完全にテレビ無しの生活というのはちょっと不安はある。
でも、もうここ何年も、コンセント抜きっぱなしで一度も使ってないにもかかわらず、受信料だけしっかり全額取られていく。私は公共放送は大事だと思うし、受信料制度にも反対していないけど、もう限界。

今までずっと、全く観ていないのに払い続けただけでももう十分。テレビ捨てて即効解約します。
とりあえず先にコードだけ捨ててNHKに連絡、その後でゆっくり本体を捨てるべきか・・・？

[World Vision] (English 日本語) Christmas Presents for My Child In Ethiopia

私は、ワールドビジョンジャパンのチャイルドスポンサーシップで、エチオピアに住む9歳の女の子のスポンサーをしています。その子に2ヶ月ほど前にクリスマスプレゼントと手紙を送りました。(*****の部分は、伏字です。）

I am participating in World Vision Child Sponsorship and my child is 9 years old girl living in Ethiopia. About 2 month ago, I sent Christmas present and letter to her. (the part ***** is filter, related to personal information).

Merry Christmas and Happy birthday! How are you doing these days? ********** In Catholic church, Advent of this year starts on November 28th. I'm looking forward to it very much.

With this letter, I send Christmas presents to you and your siblings, and birthday presents to you. January 7th is Christmas in Ethiopia, and December ** is your 9th birthday, isn't it? The Christmas presents are a small desk calendar, six sheets of stickers, and a Christmas card.

The desk calendar is a lunar age calendar of 2011. I am afraid that this calendar is different from Ethiopian calendar. Anyway, you can display it and learn from it about waxing and waning of the moon. I think a World Vision staff tells you how to read this calendar, if you ask about. The letters on the Christmas card are saying "Merry Christmas" in various languages. "Buon Natale" is Italy; "Feliz Navidad" is Spanish; "Merry Christmas" is English; "Frohe Weihnachten" is Germany; "Joyeux Noel" is French; and "メリークリスマス", the handwritten text which I wrote is Japanese.

I have enclosed a birthday card for you, and an accessory as a birthday present. And I have enclosed a ruler too. It is a present from World Vision Japan. World Vision Japan gives it to all children who have sponsors in Japan. You can wear the accessory anywhere you want (for example, on your schoolbag), as pictured below. And can you see the English words on the accessory, "JESUS CHRIST", "Son of God", and "SAVIOUR"? I hope you remember these words. Please ask someone who knows

both English and Ethiopian what these words mean.

Digest of the last episode; The Stormwind navy cutter I was aboard was dragged into undersea by Naga and a mysterious gigantic molluscan. I was narrowly rescued from them by Erunak Stonespeaker who restored the contact with Earthen Ring main unit. Before the begining of real war, I got sleepy and went back to the city one way or another.
<前回までのあらすじ> Nagaの陰謀（？）によって海底に引きずり込まれたStormwindの軍船。間一髪のところでEarthen Ring本隊との連絡が取れ、いよいよこれから本格的な戦いが・・・というところで眠くなったので無理やり首都へ一時帰還。

I wrote WoW entries here only in Japanese at first. Because, in English, there are tons of WoW information site already and personal blogs are not popular. But I decide I'll write both in English and Japanese from now on.... as much as I can.

Actually, writing entries in two languages is not easy for me, though only in Japanese or in English is not very difficult. If I write in Japanese first and write in English after that, my English gets clumsy (more than usual). And if I write in English first and next write in Japanese, my Japanese gets clumsy too for some reason （'-'）

I think I'll be better after I just get used to write in this style, and I have to find more interesting things that can amuse both English-speaking people and Japanese-speaking people.

今までは、英語のWoW情報サイトなんて腐るほどあるし、日記型の英語ブログは流行らないから、WoWネタは日本語だけで十分かな～と手を抜いていたんですが・・・
やっぱりできるだけ英語と日本語両方で書いたほうがよさそうだと思うので、これからはそうします。

いや・・・日本語だけ、とか英語だけ、とかならともかく、両方書くのって意外と大変なのよ・・・どうしてもどちらかが不自然な文になってしまって。
元々下手な英語の方が不自然になるというならまだしも、英語を先に書いてから日本語の文をつけようとすると何故か日本語までおかしくなります（'-'）

まあ、まだ日本語英語併記のスタイルに慣れていないというのと、記事のネタ自体が十分に錬れていないってのがあるんだろうね。大して面白く書けていない記事でも、読者層が比較的限定されていると思うと「なんかこんな感じでいいか～」って妥協してしまうところがあるし・・・。
