Lately, I've been lucky enough to have some time to explore the town Ashleigh and I live in. During the school year, I really only spend time on campus, but being in the city during the summer has been turning out to be a lot more pleasant than I expected! I made a checklist a couple weeks ago, which has been forcing me to do new things and see more of the place that I live.

I labeled this post about beauty because that is what I am surrounded by right now as I am writing to you! My boyfriend interns at the Columbus Art Museum, and so he brought these beauties home to me a couple nights ago from a wedding that took place there :)

The print below I found at a thrift store a couple weeks ago. I'm obsessed with it.

Do you see a butterfly or two birds?

The farmer's market that I mentioned earlier is in charming, downtown Worthington. I definitely hope to go back there more often! Near the market, there is such a cool place called the Igloo Letterpress where I picked up the postcards below.

Remember this chair?

Look at her now! Ashleigh and I sanded away all of the bugs, re-stained and reupholstered, so now it looks brand new! I picked up the chair for $5 and found this fabric at a thrift store for maybe two or three bucks!

I've also been meaning to ask advice about this piece!

I found this coatrack about a year ago and have been meaning to repaint it! Finally I decided on a bright orange color! After sanding and priming the base, Ashleigh and I finally got started....and 4 coats later it was done! Well almost, I think it could actually use one more coat! Since it took, so long I put it back together and back in its place. What do you guys think? Should I paint the rest of it orange or possible just a few more sections?

Decided to throw in one more photo of the millions of flowers in my room right now! Sorry our posts have been so spread out. We've been so busy this summer. Keep posted for the redesign of our blog though! Currently I'm sketching up a new logo and Ashleigh and I are off to a photo-shoot this weekend for our new header! ...We'll let you know how it goes!

How not to make Oreo filled cookies

My roommate, Isuri and I had been hearing a lot of talk about chocolate chip cookies filled with Oreo's. That's right, filled with Oreo's. How delicious does that sound? Have you ever made these??

So we set off, following this recipe. In a similar direction, maybe we could have tried this one!

We got a little carried away, so the video below took place.

...About ten minutes later, we took the cookies out of the oven only to find out we did something wrong! Perhaps they didn't turn out as planned because we didn't sift the flour and/or added too many ingredients? We won't know until we try them again! Oh well, you don't become a master chef overnight!

Flea Market Finds Pt. 1

Hey everyone! It's been a while! We've been busy and I think both Sarah and I were completely unplugged this weekend. It was nice but I definitely am looking forward to getting caught up with everyone's posts!

Anyway, as I alluded to in this post, Sarah and I headed to a flea market a couple weekends ago so we were able to cross that off our to-do list. We found so many great things that I think we may become regulars! So in this post we're going to share Sarah's finds. Come back tomorrow to see what I came home with!

First up, we have this little chair that we walked away with for a few dollars. It's solid wood and in good shape. It's already begun it's transformation and we'll be sharing that later this week.

Sarah found these old cans for cheap and loved the colors and old typography.

As you can tell Sarah loves old posters and advertising and bought this old theater poster/hand out thing for a few bucks.

A Picasso print for $5.

An old purse for $2. It's marked Fendi. We have no idea if it's real, but it's pretty neat either way. I scored some great stuff from the same lady that I know you'll all be jealous over :)

Lastly, Sarah's been wanting an old glove form so we stopped by the local antique shop that we knew had some so she could pick one up.

A Prototype Scarf

A couple weeks ago Sarah and I decided to try to revive our middle school sewing skills. It was a scary prospect but we borrowed a friends sewing machine and dove in head first.

Disclaimer: Fashion majors and people who actually know how to sew, look away. We have no idea what we're doing :)

We decided the easiest thing to try was a scarf. So we got started...

and 45 minutes later we had the machine threaded!

Seriously.

Sarah had a bunch of fabric remnants so we picked a few colors we liked, laid them out and cut them to approximately the same width.

This is me after sewing the first time since middle school!

We sewed all three pieces together to practice our straight lines ahah.

Then we pinned it and essentially turned it into a giant tube. We wanted it to be big and voluminous so it was pretty large.

Then we sewed it together so it was a giant circle. Here's Sarah rockin' the finished product.

We've got many more ideas! And with more practice we're starting to get the hang of the whole sewing thing. Maybe next time we'll actually look up some instructions or something :)

Intern Heroes!

Little Debbie currently has a contest running where interns can win free breakfast items by submitting a picture saying why they deserve Little Debbie breakfast.

If you didn't know, Sarah and I (along with two other awesome people) intern at the same ad agency. Today we decided to have a little fun and submit a picture! Here is our work of art:

Jake was a good sport and let us photoshop him up as a Little Debbie wannabe. And a few short hours later, we found out that we won!

Call me crazy...again.

I feel like the majority of my posts should start out this way. I posted my first crazy idea here and I'm still working on that one. Meanwhile, I saw on a blog (and I can't remember where!) that someone used contact paper to make chevron stripes on their wall. I thought this was a genius idea because I'm a renter and can't do anything permanent.

Well, if you know me at all, I'm not one to measure and take my time so chevron was not going to work for me. Stripes seemed simpler. I thought I had a one of a kind idea but as soon as I googled "tape on walls" I ran across this post over at High-Heeled Foot in the Door. So I'm not a genius haha but it was nice to find someone who had already done this!

I used three inch electrical tape that I ordered off Amazon. I'm kinda lazy so I skipped the measuring and math and just tried to space my stripes 5 inches apart. They aren't perfect but I'm ok with that. I'm pretty short so reaching the ceiling was a small victory in itself!

I picked up these vintage jello molds from Cindy over at Custom Comforts. I love the way they look with the gold mirror.

So, what do you think? I don't even know if I love it. I'm trying to picture a gallery wall behind the tv eventually. But I'm still not sold. The best part? I can take it down if I don't like it. I promised myself I'd live with it a few days before I take it down.

It is starting to grow on me :)

Sarah and I have been super productive today. So productive that I haven't the strength the put together a real post. Let's just say we can officially cross something off of Sincerely's 100!

Anyway- everyone knows I'm a little obsessed with my cat. I can't help it! So I figured I could muster up the energy to share a couple pictures of the little guy.

Mid Century Dresser Makeover

Hey Everyone!

Regular posting should resume shortly! I'm all moved in, not settled but at least everything is in here. It may be weeks until all my clothes are off the floor but hey, slow and steady, right? Meanwhile, new apartment means a lot of new projects! So I should have some pretty cool stuff to share soon :)

First up- this mid century modern dresser. I picked the handsome man up from Craigslist months ago with my new apartment in mind. I normally don't go for this style, but lately I've been having an affair with mid century design. Did I mention it was only $35, in perfect condition? Yeah. Baller status.

I liked the original color but decided I wanted to go just a little darker. The top was laminate (sad face) but everything else was either solid wood or real wood veneer (read: stainable).

I tested one to see the difference. Then I finally was able to get outside and do the rest of the drawers.

Because the top was laminate, I decided to paint the outside. I was originally going to go with white...but for some reason I can't recall I decided to go with a medium gray.

Yes... I was watching cash cab. I need to go on that show! I was killin' it!

It just wouldn't be a complete post without an appearance by Liam.

This corner of the apartment is looking a little bare at the moment. But after I finish a couple projects I'm working on it should start to come together.

So how do you guys feel about mid century pieces? I'm usually more of a traditional girl but I'm beginning to stray ;)

Antique Chairs Pt. 2

Ok, so it's been an incredibly long time since I first introduced you to these chairs here. Well I finally got around to finishing them up (which I could not have done without the help of this wonderful, insanely talented woman), but I took so many pictures that I'm splitting it up into two posts. So here is part 2 of my pair of antique chair makeover:

Disclaimer: Lots of Liam pictures in this post. I can't help it! He loves being in the spot light!

With the help of my wonderful boyfriend (and kitty), we began tearing these guys apart.

There was a lot of this:

After the crumbly-foam-pocolypse we were left with this:

We popped the backs out and saved them for future reference.

Liam found a place to lay and watch. It's not like he was in the way or anything!

I sanded off the peeling finish so I could paint.

Then I prepared my first coat. I knew I wanted to distress the frames so I mixed a gray color to be the base coat.

I distressed the base coat a little then painted over it with a soft black from Martha Stewart. After distressing I gave them each a coat of wax. You can sort of see the difference: the one in the back was waxed and the front wasn't.

I think I'm going to turn my twin bed into a couch. This would definitely be my biggest repurposing project to date. But I don't think it would be very hard at all.

Here's why:

I wouldn't have to drop $500 bucks.

I'd be using something I already have. Love being green.

It's cheap.

I would have to live 2 weeks sans couch while waiting for the one I want to arrive.

It would be a perfect spot for overnight guests.

Did I mention I wouldn't have to spend $$$$?

I would only have one, but I think it could work! I think I'll use a 10oz dropcloth to make the cover. I thought about a king sized flat sheet but I think a drop cloth will look a little crisper. It doesn't have to be perfect. I like how this one is casual looking. If I end up hating it... well I can save up for a couch and get it later.

This will be happening pretty soon. So I will keep you all posted on the progress.

Ok, be honest. Have I really lost it this time?

A Craigslist Rocking Chair

Moving in t-minus 3 days. Ahhh crazyness. I have so much packing/cleaning to do. And there have been some complications with the couch situation. Frustration!

In the mean time...

I picked this number up off Craigslist for $12. I loved that it was mostly stripped. You could tell this poor girl had been quite a few different colors in her day. Yellow, blue, white, green.

I only had to do minimal sanding to get her ready to paint. I skipped the primer because I knew I'd be doing some heavy distressing. I used a Martha Stewart pre-mixed sample in Ballet Slipper. A few bucks and I had more than enough.

It had this weird little seat. It was too small and uncomfortable to sit on. My dad cut a piece of plywood for me to use as a new, more proportionate seat.

The color is a super soft pink. I'm going through my pink phase late in life and needed to paint something pink. Sometimes I wish I would have liked girlier things when I was little, instead of Power Rangers and four wheelers. But then I would have missed out on pretending to be Blue Ranger (he was the smartest) while riding my fourweeler...

Anyway!

I used drop cloth to cover the seat. I had picked out some other printed fabrics but kept going back to the plain drop cloth. I wanted the heavy distressing to take center stage.

I used a super fine sand paper to distress. I've found that doing it this way takes longer but gives a more natural worn look.

TIP: Let your paint cure for a couple days. It will distress more naturally without peeling as much.

Another TIP: Distress an area, paint over it and distress it again. This makes it look legit haha.

Sorry for so many pictures! I just love all the detail of this piece. And all the pink-ness.

5 Minute Pillow Cover

Throw pillows are great, not just for looks, but for sisters who come to visit you that sleep on your couch and you don't want to give them your pillow... Just kidding! I have lots of regular pillows too haha. I digress. This is a simple tutorial to make covers for your pillows. I don't sew and I think even I could do this. It's an easy way to use fun fabrics or even upcycle. Use goodwill fabrics or an old sweater to drive the cost of this already cheap project even lower.

My $3 Vanity Mirror

Hello!

Let's skip the small talk and get right to it! I bought this little vanity mirror and a junk shop for 3 big ones. I know, I know. So expensive ; ) I forgot to take a picture before I got started, but I remembered soon enough to be able to show you what the original finish looked like!

It was black with hints of gold and I really wasn't feeling it. It stayed that way for a little bit while I decided what to do with it. I contemplated a bright glossy color, but decided I wanted to give gold a shot. I looked in to gold leafing but decided that was more money and time than I wanted to invest.

I picked up a tube of rub 'n buff for a few bucks and went to town.

This ^^^ was the finish before. Too dark/gothic looking for me. Here it is after the rub 'n buff:

It stayed like this for a while too. I liked it, but I never really used it. I usually stand up at my vanity to do my hair and make up so I never even looked into this mirror.

I still liked the way it looked so I decided, while doing this project, to give it a little chalkboard love.

I considered writing some confidence-boosting-esteem-building-tyra-banks-ish quote on it.

But then I decided to keep it real and write something a little more useful:

Am I the only one who doesn't notice an annoying stray eyebrow hair until I get into the driver's seat and look in the rear view mirror? No?

This is crazy! I saw my mirror in a boutique in the Short North this past weekend. Theirs was painted a creamy white... and I kind of like it!

I think, for now, mine will stay the same.

Spicy Chicken Fried Rice

I'm moving out in 9 days! I can't believe it. I'm enjoying these last few days with roommates and it will definitely be bitter sweet when I leave. One thing I'm especially enjoying is the cooking of my Sri Lankan friend, Isuri. Not only is she one of the most talented artists I know, she also makes some delicious food and every time she cooks the apartment smells amazing.

The other night I asked her to show us how to make fried rice so I could share it with everyone.

Our wonderful chef.

Ingredients

[You could add or take away pretty much anything to suit your tastes.
And make as much as you want. It's a flexible recipe!]

Rice

Chicken

Eggs

Carrots

Onions

Seasonings

[To taste.]

Curry Powder

Tumeric

Red Pepper

Chili Powder

Garlic Salt

Curry Leaves

Salt

CAUTION! This is a spicy fried rice. Adjust the spices accordingly. If you use the amount of spices that we did you may or may not create a cloud of spicy mustard gas that will burn your eyes and nose... oops.

Pretty, though. Right?

TIP: Cold rice is better for frying, so use leftovers or chill your rice after cooking.

Mix your spices and chicken and cook first. You can use butter or oil for frying.

Take a break and take a picture of your cat because he is cute :)

Add in chopped onions, pre-steamed carrots and any other vegetables you'd like.

Then add the rice. You may need to add additional butter/oil for frying purposes.

Lastly, make a little hole and pour your eggs into. Let cook briefly then mix in.

And since I know you all enjoy a good before and after...

You can add soy sauce too if you'd like. Just don't ask Sarah to put it on for you...or you might end up with it all over your dress ;)

My First Curbside Makeover

Hi all. I'm excited to bring you my first ever curbside makeover. Well, there was that coffee table. But that wasn't mine. I first showed you this end table in this post. Here's a little refresher:

It is a pretty solid piece. The drawer is dove tailed an the only thing majorly wrong with it (besides the dated yellow finish) was the peeling veneer on the top.

I peeled off the remaining veneer using the hot iron and towel method. I used wood filler to fill the bigger gouges. Then I used spackle to go over the entire area to even it out. I let that dry, sanded it, did another layer and then sanded it again. I used fine grit to ensure a smooth surface. I also used this time to fill in a few other minor scrapes. I usually don't do this, but I didn't want to distress this piece so it was necessary.

Inspired by Cassie's nightstands (over at Primitive & Proper) to break outside of my color comfort zone, I picked out a deep purple. I wasn't quite ready to go too bright haha.

The color is Kalamata Olive by Behr.

The knob is from Anthro on sale. Yellow and purple are compliments so it made sense. I think it's fun. I could always change it to something more subdued if the mood strikes me.

I think this one will be coming with me to the new apartment...

...which I move into in like a week and a half. Crazy! So if we're a little light on posts it's because we're in a transitional period! But don't worry, we'll have lots to blog about once we're settled in!

A Curbside Coffee Table

Who doesn't love free stuff? It must have been fate. Around the time that I picked up my first curbside find my best friend, Rachel, called to tell me she found an awesome coffee table someone was throwing away in her neighborhood.

Here it is after we applied some paint stripper to the top. it looks white, but it's actually a gross looking light yellow. I can't even describe it.

I have nothing against yellow, as you can see in this coffee table makeover I completed a while back. But this was. just. wrong.

The paint job was sloppy and thick and required a lot of muscle to strip.

After the second round of stripping and sanding forever.

We stained the top dark walnut and painted the base in a white we had left over from this project.

The knobs were on the piece when Rachel found it and we liked them so they stayed. Rachel, unfortunately, does not have room for this in her apartment, so right now her parents are fostering it in their living room. When Rachel does have room for it... it may get ugly!

We did a little distressing to bring out some imperfections and blend nicely with the worn top.

It's a beauty all right. And the only thing Rae had to buy was some stain. This project literally cost only pennies. I'm a little jealous.

Anyone else find any fab "trash" lately?
