“My brother keeps a human head in his closet. Every few days he gets a new head.” A young boy walks into his brother’s room and pulls a pair of plastic gloves from the back of his jeans. He pulls out a bowling ball bag with a human head inside. That certainly grabs your attention and that’s what the film FOUND wants to do.

FOUND is the story of 12 year old Marty, who knows that his brother is a serial killer. There is no discovery, as I have said, this is clear the moment the film opens. Marty spends time in his brother Steve’s room when he isn’t home. Keeping a pair of rubber dish gloves on him, he constantly goes into the closet to ogle the latest decapitated trophy. His school life is difficult as he has only one friend and is the object of bullying from other students.

Not only that, but Steve is constantly verbally attacked by their parents, which creates an uneasy feeling throughout the house. Yes, life for Marty isn’t all that great. Things, as bad as they are, only escalate when Steve finds out that Marty knows about his hobby, setting the brothers on a journey towards a bloody resolution.

I’ve heard about this film for some time but I wasn’t sure it was as powerful as people said. Well I can honestly say that not only is the film good, but it definitely goes the hardcore route, but in the appropriate places. HEADLESS, the film within a film is unrelenting to the point where it would be absurd elsewhere, but within the context and bleakness of FOUND, it works perfectly. It is so violently and sexually charged that it is almost unwatchable but much like a train wreck, you can’t help yourself. FOUND is a quiet film, much like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, where the day to day tension mounts till it culminates in a hail of blood and gore.

Some scenes linger just a little too long, but in a good way. The result is unsettling and builds the tension. FOUND has something just below the surface all the way through. The film is not squeamish, but it only shows you what it needs to, allowing your brain to work its magic, creating a truly horrific nightmare that can’t easily be erased.

The production design is top notch, each boy’s room feeling authentic and lived in. A nice touch visually are the movie posters including Popcorn, Without Warning, Wild Zero, and The Taint (the less said about that one, the better), that decorate the walls of their rooms. Intentional or not, the titles and/or plots elude the action unfolding.

Gavin Brown and Ethan Philbeck are at the center of the film and do a fantastic job. Gavin Brown as younger brother Marty is great. His performance is subtle and real. He never crosses the line into dumb or annoying kid territory and that alone is a revelation. Ethan Philbeck as older brother/serial killer Steve turns in a perfectly subdued performance. He is never evil or crazy, he is simply who he is. Their home life and Marty’s school life brings to life the traumas that can push someone over the edge without ever feeling unrealistic or extreme.

All this along with excellent and meaningful direction by Scott Schirmer helps to make FOUND the excellent film it is. As I have said, the film is quiet, but not weak. I recommend it to anyone looking for some truly disturbing entertainment.

Review: Don't Blink (2014)

Sometimes it's the quiet horror that keeps you up at night. The movies that make you think in circles and appreciate the people and pets around you. There are plenty of things in this world that we can't explain and that makes everything possible. Don't Blink looks at the possibilities that lay in remote areas and in the world we can't see.

A group of friends head up to an isolated cabin for the weekend. Jack and his secretly pregnant girl Tracy (Brian Austin Green and Mena Suvari), Alex, Sam, Charolette (Zack Ward, Leif Gantvoort, and Samantha Jacober), among others. It takes about a whole tank of gas to get there some most everyone is riding on fumes when they pull up at the mountain resort.

As they head up to check in, they run into Jack’s ex Ella (Fiona Gubelmann) and her new boyfriend. Ah, good times. The awkward moments doesn’t last as things are not quite right at the resort. No one and nothing is there. The place is deserted with food still warm and pots cooking on the stove. Much like the famous ship, The Marie Celeste, people just seem to have vanished.

As they start to explore, the unthinkable happens. People start to disappear. With the pumps deactivated and no cell signal, the group struggle to survive in a place where if you blink, you may something…or someone.

Don’t Blink is a twisted and frightening film that plays like 10 Little Indians by way of the Twilight Zone. The answers are spare but the tension is cranked up. Like the best films, Don’t Blink explores the darker side of self-preservation. Panic takes over and blood is spilt, not with malice but fear.

Brian Austin Green and Zack Ward are solid here, both commanding and edgy. Each doing what they feel is for the greater good, but constantly being at odds with each other. In fact, everyone is slid here. One of the things I appreciated the most is that there are no stereotypically annoying characters here. Everyone is a real person that both well written and relatable.

First time director Travis Oates smartly casts capable actors and makes daring decisions that keep you guessing till the end. This is not a jump scare type of film nor is it a gorefest. This is a smart quiet film that will leave you with a chill and a desire not take your eyes off of anyone in your house…ever.

Rob Zombie and Bret Easton Ellis Discuss What Went Wrong With Manson!

As exciting as it was to think Rob Zombie would finally be tackling Charles Manson directly, it just wasn't meant to be. He and writer Bret Easton Ellis, the creator of some of the most important novels of his generation (Less Than Zero, Rules of Attraction, American Psycho) are no longer set to bring the miniseries to TV. What happened to possibly the most important version of the Manson Family murders? Timing and possibly social media.

I have a very personal attachment to the Manson case and have read most every book on the subject, visited the sites, and deconstructed the events time and again. The problem with most every account is that it is never as hard hitting and tragic as it is in your head. This is due to the fact that the Family is always the focus and the victims (though more famous than Manson), are regulated to professional extras to be used as fodder. This is troubling. Zombie and Ellis had aimed to change all that with their 10 hour FOX mini-series (HERE), but as usual, anything with substance has a harder chance of surviving the Hollywood system than some standard fair redressed with an interesting setting.

On his latest podcast, Writer Bret Easton Ellis and Zombie sit down for a chat and discuss how things went sideways in a hurry. Brett Easton Ellis had the best idea for the film ever, along the lines of the excellent documentary, Scott Michaels' Six Degrees of Helter Skelter (which if you haven't seen it and have even a passing interest, this is the one to watch above all others).

"The series was going to start a year before the murders occur and it would focus on how all the characters inexorably collided together," laments Ellis. "a large scare look at L.A. at the end of the sixties with a large ensemble of characters from the Hollywood word, the music biz, and the dark side of hippie culture."

When asked what is it about Manson that fascinates, he had this to say.

"I think for me, it was sort of blured in my mind at the time as a little kid." says Zombie. "I'd be looking at pictures of the Beatles, looking at pictures of the Manson Family, looking at the girls and thing, oh, this is all sort of showbiz...and I really didn't have the brain capacity to distinguish what was what. I think sometimes, you get an impression of something at a young age and it stuck with me"

So everything seemed like a perfect storm. Then the ball dropped.

"It is announced that Rob and I are collaborating on this show," details Ellis. "and I was kinda surprised that it kind of blew up on social media and so many people were talking about it. I sometimes wonder fi that gave NBC the idea to greenlight their Manson show..."

The NBC show they are discussing is Aquarius, starring David Duchovny, which follows a detective on Manson's trail before he really goes on a killing spree. Read our first report HERE.

"I think you're right," adds Zombie. "...if they were on the fence, that could have knocked them off the fence to move forward with their project."

So basically, the FOX Ellis, Zombie project hit hard but NBC moved first. This effectively killed the project for FOX and unfortunately for Zombie and Ellis as well. If Aquarius is a hit, they may revive it, but if it fails, any Manson project will seem unprofitable.

It's a shame and it kills me on a personal level, but likely, we will not get anything, anytime soon, that scratches more than skin deep when it comes to those hot summer nights in 1969.

In 1990, the film was released theatrically nationwide. However, the movie studio edited the film extensively and several scenes were excised or rearranged – much to Clive Barker’s disappointment. With lost footage meticulously restored, the result is not only a more faithful adaptation of Clive Barker’s book Cabal, but also what he originally intended NIGHTBREED to be.

Official statement from Director Clive Barker: "This is film history and beyond my wildest dreams of realization. When Scream Factory told me that they found the NIGHTBREED film footage I was gob-smacked! This is the ultimate validation of choices made by myself and Mark Miller [of Seraphim Films] all the way back in 2008. As we embarked down the road of attempting to track down the lost footage, we looked at each other and said, 'Maybe one day they'll find it.' It's my pleasure to announce that the day has come. Speaking personally, I didn't allow myself to believe that it would. Even if we did find some footage (which we did in 2009 in the form of heavily degraded VHS tapes) and even if we did find a company willing to release the film (which we did in 2013 with Scream Factory, God bless them) the prospect of finding the actual lost film materials was remoter than I'd wanted to admit out loud. If the footage could not be found by those who had worked closest on it the same year it had been released, then what were the odds we'd be able to find anything 20 years on? But Scream Factory, in their commendable determination, kept up the search and thanks to them total reconstruction has been made a possibility. There's never been a reconstruction that's had as little chance of succeeding and yet has succeeded on as many fronts as this film has. It's unprecedented. To now have a movie that we can put together in the way that I fully intended it to be seen when I first set out to make this film in 1989 is extraordinary. The project has moved inexorably to this conclusion. Fate and the hard work of individuals such as Mark Miller, Russell Cherrington, Phil and Sarah Stokes, Occupy Midian, Morgan Creek, and ultimately, Scream Factory have made this a possibility and I could not be happier."

New statement from Clive Barker’s Office: The Nightbreed Director's Cut is an entirely different film than the one which was released in theaters. Its 20 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, but it contains over 40 minutes of new and altered footage. Clive oversaw the reconstruction and edit himself, personally ensuring that, at long last, he was able to tell the story he always wanted to tell, but until now, had never been given the chance. Once the scenes were reordered, and the original film footage restored, the entire film received a brand new sound mix and color pass. It is, in every way, a different movie. It contains more story, more monsters, and there's even a musical umber. Ultimately, what we've delivered is a love story 25 years in the making.

Dark Harbor is pleased to unveil two brand new mazes, Soulmate and B340, and an Exclusive Encounter unlike any other haunted experience onboard the infamous cruise liner.

Graceful Gale was the belle of The Queen Mary in the 1930s. As a beautiful first class passenger Gale charmed her way across the ship’s dance floor regularly until mysteriously disappearing on her final passage in 1939. The new Soulmate maze will take over the former location of the Containment maze and bring to life the haunted spirit of the frightful Graceful Gale. The story of Gale will unravel as her true spirit is revealed and those who dare will realize that Gale may not be as graceful as she appeared, but in fact is more monstrous than ever imagined. Gale will haunt The Queen Mary in order to lure suitors into her possession. Once she captures their hearts she will have her adoring minions cut them up and reassemble them to create her “perfect mate.” But Gale isn’t so easy to please and only a few creatures are suitable enough to be her dance partner. The rest of the rejects are doomed and outcast to haunt the Queen at night.

On a 1948 Atlantic voyage, third class Queen Mary passenger, Samuel, was locked away in room B340 after a violent outburst. After hours of isolation, crew found Samuel in his room, violently ripped apart. Murdered or self-induced suicide, no one knows. B340 is a new maze through Samuel the Savage’s schizophrenic journey of isolated decent into insanity. Travel through his warped mind literally and figuratively, ultimately reaching the final resting place, but only after visitors navigate a mirage of virtual B340s. Samuel is on the loose, he’s dangerous and completely out of his mind. Through his maze you may lose your own mind and find it impossible to escape.

The horror comedy Sledge is finally making it's way to us all just in time for Halloween. The film by Writer/director Kristian Hansen will hit VOD in September and DVD in October. Read on for the details.

SLEDGE, a ‘bloody’ good horror-comedy in the tradition of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Shaun of the Dead, premieres on VOD September 2^nd and DVD on October 7^th.

A spoof of the horror genre, and littered with nods and references to fright flicks of yesteryear, the film fixes on a psychopath who not only believes he’s in a movie and video game but that he’s the hero of this story.

House of Manson chronicles Charles Manson's life from childhood up until his arrest following the raid on Barker Ranch months after the infamous Tate/LaBianca murders that sent a shockwave not just through Los Angeles but throughout the entire world.

The film was written and directed by Brandon Slagle, who was recently deemed the "go-to-gore-guy" by The Hollywood Reporter during their coverage of the European Film Market. Review: Take A Swim With The Killer Mermaid (2014)

Every now and again I come across a film that is kinda of quiet sleeper. A film that is pretty decent, but yet gets less press than the latest Found Footage fiasco. The film I’m talking about today is Killer Mermaid and this is one that is worth getting into the water for.

After a bloody opening involving a couple killed by a mysterious fisherman, we are introduced to Kelly and Lucy (Kristina Klebe and Natalie Burn), who are taking a vacation in the Mediterranean. Kelly has some issues with the water due to a personal tragedy but is trying to work through it. While visiting an old friend, the girls meet Boban (Dragan Micanovic). He is a bit of a playboy who invites everyone to an old military stronghold sitting on a nearby island. The problem is that the mysterious fisherman is there, and the deadly secret he is protecting.

Killer Mermaid is a sharp film. It’s nice to see a movie with adults on vacation rather than a bunch of kids on spring break or something to that effect. The relationships are realistic and that alone elevates the film beyond 90% of the stuff out there currently. Of course, Kristina Klebe (Rob Zombie’s Halloween) puts in a strong performance nd can more than hold her own when legendary Franco Nero enters the picture as Niko, the man who knows all when it comes to the killer mermaid. Now speaking of the mermaid let me say this. She is nicely realized. Beautiful and scary, she shines once she is revealed. If there is disappointment, it's with the fact that she has so little screen time.

If there is anywhere the film suffers, it’s with some of the action sequences but they are minor and it shouldn’t hurt your enjoyment of the film. This is a good mermaid film and hey, we don’t get that many in the first place. I think this is one to check out.
