How to make a Jack-O-Lantern

Carving a jack-o-lantern is easy and fun.

First, pick a pumpkin from a pumpkin patch. Second, gather all the materials. You need a knife, spoon, candle, gloves, an adult and a marker. Then, draw a Boo! face and have your dad help you cut the face. After that, draw the lid and your dad will help you cut the lid and remove it. Later, take the goop out of the pumpkin, throw the scraps away and put put a candle inside the pumpkin. Put your carved pumpkin at the front door and your jack-o-lantern is ready to greet all the trick or treaters.

Last but not the least, have a happy halloween!

Walden

Imagine a young man in the 1850s striding off into the woods close to Boston and living alone in a log cabin for two years. He then writes a book about it and names it after the lake next to which he lived for that time- Walden. What can you reasonably expect from it? A log of how he built the house (on his own); how he fed and sustained himself (as he 'lived by the labour of my hands only'), specially in this lonely winter months; and perhaps some philosophical insights about the whole experience. After all, he was not that far from his town of Concorde and visited it often enough; and this was not a grand adventure like walking across America or a transatlantic voyage. Was Thoreau and his book famous by exception, because he was the oddity- a philosopher in an up-and-coming America that lay so much emphasis on commercial enterprise?

These were my thoughts when I picked up the book. What I found was an exciting book that beat all those low expectations. In his very first chapter 'Economy', he captures the reader with the striking arguments he makes for the principle that was the motivation for his two year stay- that true wealth and happiness comes through shunning the laboured accumulation of material riches. It is not a new message, but is delivered so well that right away you realize this is an extraordinary person with an extraordinary clarity of thought and a great gift for words. As I read further, I had a pencil in hand- the book had too many statements that took my breath away and compelled my graphitic tribute. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.", he said, as they work endlessly to support lands, farms and houses that are supposed to support them. Also immediately evident is his contempt for conventional wisdom or the advice of seniors. This is not arrogance but the sign of a true moral compass- this was the age of slavery and Thoreau was one of the few who had the courage to stand up against that accepted practice of society.

The second thing that struck me was that this Harvard graduate was a scholar of subjects much beyond the walls of his Alma Mater. He quotes extensively from the Vedas, from Hindu fables, from Kabir, from Confucius, from the Greek epics. This was no empty display of academic achievement- his entire philosophy was a distillation of great purity from these readings. His attitude was not of erudition but of a deep love for the truth in those timeless writings. "How much more admirable the Bhagvat-Geeta than all the ruins of the East!", said he. "It was fit that I should live on rice, mainly, who loved so well the philosophy of India.", he said, when itemizing his food related expenses. How many of us can claim this voracious appetite for wisdom from distant lands, specially at such an young age?

The third thing is his amazing love for all things nature. Solitude was not loneliness because he immersed himself in every aspect of pristine nature that was at Walden. No detail was too small and beauty was everywhere- in the blue of Walden lake, in the red squirrels that gave him company, the hare, the partridge, the owl, the eagle, the fish. Who carries out purposeful pilgrimages to individual trees in the woods? In this respect he was like Muir or Melville, devoting entire chapters to bubbles under the ice, epic wars between ants (written with great humour!), or to patterns in the sand as the ice of winter melted.

Sometimes, .. I spent the hours of midnight fishing from a boat by moonlight, serenaded by owls and foxes, and hearing, from time to time, the creaking note of some unknown bird close at hand. These experiences were very memorable and valuable to me,—anchored in forty feet of water, and twenty or thirty rods from the shore, surrounded sometimes by thousands of small perch and shiners, dimpling the surface with their tails in the moonlight, and communicating by a long flaxen line with mysterious nocturnal fishes which had their dwelling forty feet below, or sometimes dragging sixty feet of line about the pond as I drifted in the gentle night breeze, now and then feeling a slight vibration along it, indicative of some life prowling about its extremity, of dull uncertain blundering purpose there, and slow to make up its mind. At length you slowly raise, pulling hand over hand, some horned pout squeaking and squirming to the upper air. It was very queer, especially in dark nights, when your thoughts had wandered to vast and cosmogonal themes in other spheres, to feel this faint jerk, which came to interrupt your dreams and link you to Nature again. It seemed as if I might next cast my line upward into the air, as well as downward into this element, which was scarcely more dense. Thus I caught two fishes as it were with one hook.

Our village life would stagnate if it were not for the unexplored forests and meadows which surround it. We need the tonic of wildness,—to wade sometimes in marshes where the bittern and the meadow-hen lurk, and hear the booming of the snipe; to smell the whispering sedge where only some wilder and more solitary fowl builds her nest, and the mink crawls with its belly close to the ground. At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be infinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of Nature.

His descriptions of the seasons is as methodical as it is aesthetic. For him, the long lone winters were times to be spent with his books and his winter companions- visiting poets, philosophers and resident owls. Spring is the subject of many writers- but Thoreau beats them all hands down.

The first ice is especially interesting and perfect, being hard, dark, and transparent, and affords the best opportunity that ever offers for examining the bottom where it is shallow; for you can lie at your length on ice only an inch thick, like a skater insect on the surface of the water, and study the bottom at your leisure, only two or three inches distant, like a picture behind a glass, and the water is necessarily always smooth then. If you examine it closely the morning after it freezes, you find that the greater part of the bubbles, which at first appeared to be within it, are against its under surface, and that more are continually rising from the bottom; while the ice is as yet comparatively solid and dark, that is, you see the water through it. These bubbles are from an eightieth to an eighth of an inch in diameter, very clear and beautiful, and you see your face reflected in them through the ice. There may be thirty or forty of them to a square inch. There are also already within the ice narrow oblong perpendicular bubbles about half an inch long, sharp cones with the apex upward; or oftener, if the ice is quite fresh, minute spherical bubbles one directly above another, like a string of beads.

The snow had already covered the ground since the 25th of November, and surrounded me suddenly with the scenery of winter. I withdrew yet farther into my shell, and endeavored to keep a bright fire both within my house and within my breast. In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagvat Geeta, since whose composition years of the gods have elapsed, and in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial; and I doubt if that philosophy is not to be referred to a previous state of existence, so remote is its sublimity from our conceptions. I lay down the book and go to my well for water, and lo! there I meet the servant of the Bramin, priest of Brahma and Vishnu and Indra, who still sits in his temple on the Ganges reading the Vedas, or dwells at the root of a tree with his crust and water jug. I meet his servant come to draw water for his master, and our buckets as it were grate together in the same well. The pure Walden water is mingled with the sacred water of the Ganges. With favoring winds it is wafted past the site of the fabulous islands of Atlantis and the Hesperides, makes the periplus of Hanno, and, floating by Ternate and Tidore and the mouth of the Persian Gulf, melts in the tropic gales of the Indian seas, and is landed in ports of which Alexander only heard the names.

But the sum total of the book is its sublime wisdom. He was a rishi in New England attire, his cabin his deerskin seat, and Walden the purifying waters of his austerities. His deep connection with Eastern and timeless truths is why this book became the inspiration of latter day Eastern saints with similar moral clarity and eloquence - Tolstoy and Gandhi. So it seems apt that, on the eve of the first non-cooperation movement in India, the first Satyagraha booklet distributed by Gandhi was simply a reprint of Thoreau's Civil Disobedience.

So this is the answer to the question I posed in the first few sentences of this post: A young man's simple account of an uneventful stay in a wooden cabin became the cement for the convictions of giants among men, who changed the very course of human history.

I will leave you with his own words of his lessons from the experience: "I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings"

Remembering Gandhi

We know Gandhi at the peak of his political power but most are not aware of how he got there. Nowadays the assumption is that the people of India were mesmerized by his philosophy of love and peace and deprived other, more effective leaders the opportunity to helm the freedom struggle. But in fact there were many eminent and courageous leaders in India before he entered the fray...the reason he still rose rapidly is two-fold: (1) he took the attack to the British with more force and impact than anyone else before, (2) he centred the struggle on atrocities of the Raj on the common men and women of India (and not about the ego satisfaction of being treated as equals by the British)...for the first time, political success was interpreted as service to the weakest members of society. Here is a small anecdote from Guha's "Rebels against the Raj" to illustrate.

Further context to the excerpt below, Gandhi returned to India in 1915, when Annie Besant was at the peak of her political powers (she was the first woman president of the INC in 1917) and the leader of the Home Rule movement, the most prominent struggle against the British at the time. In 1916, she founded the now renowned Banares Hindu University (BHU) and invited, among others, Gandhi, to speak (excerpt starts here):

"He was expected to talk about his work with the diasporic community in South Africa, but he chose to focus on issues closer at hand instead. Indeed, Gandhi made this the occasion to announce himself as the coming man in Indian politics. He did so by attacking the patrons of the university, who had come suitably overdressed for the occasion. Was it necessary, asked Gandhi of the assembled Maharajas, 'that in order to show the truest loyalty to our King- Emperor, it is necessary for us to ransack our jewellery-boxes and to appear bedecked from head to toe? There can be no spirit of self-government about us,' he carried on, 'if we take away or allow others to take away from the peasants almost the whole of the results of their labour."

After targeting the Princes Gandhi targeted colonial officials, of whom a fair sprinkling were also present. As he chastised them for being so indifferent to the plight of ordinary Indians, Mrs. Besant, who was also sitting on the stage, said *"Stop! Stop! Stop!"* The students, on the other hand, asked Gandhi to continue. So he did. But when he characterized British officials as 'tyrannical and overbearing', Mrs Besant intervened once more. The chairman, the Maharaja of Darbhanga, now asked Gandhi to stop, once and for all."

A few months later, in the wake of a nation wide campaign against the Rowlett act that galvanized the country, Gandhi had replaced her and Tilak as the leader of the Indian freedom struggle.

The White South and Moby Dick

I recently read (again) The White South by Hammond Innes and would recommend it to fans of Moby Dick. There are some parallels and some differences. The story is mostly a first person narrative of a somewhat naïve sailor who impulsively joins up a fleet of ships focused on whaling. Soon his (and that of his crew's) fate is overwhelmed by forceful personalities and unforgiving nature, leading inexorably to disaster. Like Moby Dick, the narrative is enjoyable for its attention to maritime terms, the business of whaling and extraction of oil (but less squeezing and more motorised saws). The Southern Ocean with ice floes and bergs is described vividly and fulfils the stark potential of terror that Melville attributes to the color White. If you are not familiar with what I am referring to, I recommend you read Chapter 42: The Whiteness of the Whale of Moby Dick- an enjoyable chapter dedicated to explaining why the Whale is all the more terrifying because of its white hue.

The book is definitely not in the same literary class as Moby Dick. The plot is not about a whale or even the whale...the foe is human, and is nowhere close to Ahab in complexity. The whale is a mute backdrop to the story, the hunt is mechanized, with spring loaded harpoon guns replacing cannibal savants. The animals are slaughtered and chopped up in an arrogant and indomitable "factory ship"...a fait accompli for any Moby Dicks out there. But Nature is the leviathan here, and delivers poetic justice with its own savage machinery, and that fascinating battle between man and Nature is still what will grab a MD fan's attention with this book.

Rebels against the Raj

I just completed "Rebels against the Raj" by Ramachandra Guha. It dives deep into the lives of 7 foreigners who come to India and fought against the British Raj. These are true romantics and incredible adventurers, dabbling in the great laboratory of human values that was the Indian freedom movement. Thier lives were inevitably intertwined with the chief curator of that lab- Mahatma Gandhi. All of them were imprisoned or exiled, some for years, and yet continued to be Indian in spirit, dress language and deed, till their death. British, Irish, American, Men, Women..they came in all shades but were united in thier love for India.

Consider Madeline Slade or Mira Behn. As a young lady she chanced upon a booklet about Gandhi, whom she had never heard of. Right after reading it, she decided that she needs to be his service, and made that into reality a year later. She took a vow of celibacy, was imprisoned a couple of times, fell in unrequited love with Hari Singh (a Gandhian revolutionary), wrote about and pioneered many principles of ecological living. A few years after Gandhi's death she relocated back to Europe and lived in the land of Beethoven, her other idol, and worked with Attenborough to bring about the movie Gandhi. She lived by her Bapu's principles till the end of her life, maintained by a grateful Indian government. What an extraordinary life!

The other rebels in the book all stayed back in India after independence, making contributions till thier death in their adopted land.

Written in typical Guha style, the book is eminently readable: full of absorbing details that emerge from detailed research, but not losing the personal touch. For example, he highlights how Meera wrote a book about Beethoven that was never published in Europe despite her efforts...the manuscript was found in her papers after her death in 1982. But the book was finally published in 1999: in India, by the Khadi Friends Forum. "An act of grace" as Guha puts it- They fulfilled her wishes in honour of her (Meera like) devotion to Gandhi and India. What a poignant detail!

The Independence movement was extraordinary in one unique aspect: in a short span, it thrust forth some of the best humans ever born-who set the world some high standards to live by. This book is worth reading to know more about some of those exemplars and be inspired to live better.

But Guha puts it best at the conclusion of his book:

"These individuals came to India at different points of time, from widely varying backgrounds and with widely varying motivations. Once here, they lived in different parts of the country, and pursued different callings and obsessions. What unites them was, first, the courage and fearlessness they displayed in their personal lives; second, the depth and duration of their commitment to their new homeland; and third, the contemporaneity, indeed, timelessness, of what they lived and struggled for. So many years after the last of these rebels passed on, what they did and what they said still speaks to Indians today.

If only we could listen."

What does Tagore mean to you?

It is Tagore's 82nd death anniversary this year, and someone asked what he means to non-Bengalis. I am not a Bengali but am a fan of Tagore. Apart from an excellent anthology of his works that I would recommend to anyone, I have read several short stories, The Geetanjali, and most recently completed 'Gora'.

The first thing that strikes you is his self awareness and confidence as an artist. He knew his abilities, and tasked himself to set a high standard that matched his reputation. He was not one to rest on his laurels, which meant that he constantly strove (and succeeded) in achieving new heights of creativity. This is evident in his later works where he wondered about the longevity of his legacy...a rare master who was masterful and vulnerable.

The second thing that strikes you is his empathy. I challenge you to read the Kabuliwala without getting a prickle of tears at the end, when the father of the bride sees a fellow father in the unfortunate Kabuliwala. Also consider this passage about a father's love for his unruly daughter from "Gora"(the book is set in late 1800s in orthodox Calcutta):

"Paresh Babu had for this capricious and unruly daughter of his even more affection than for the rest of his children, and his regard for her fearless truthfulness was all the greater because it so often got her into trouble with the rest of the family. Lolita's faults were obvious enough, and he could see how they prevented this special quality of hers from being appreciated. He was therefore all the more careful to keep it under his fostering care, lest in the process of bringing her waywardness under control her inner nobility should also be crushed.

The beauty of his other daughters was readily acknowledged by all who saw them, for their features were regular and their complexion fair. But Lolita was darker and her more complex face admitted of differences of opinion. For this reason Mistress Baroda had always expressed to her husband her anxiety about finding a suitable husband for her. But the beauty which Paresh Babu saw in her face was not that of complexion or features, but of the soul which there found its expression, not just the pleasantness of a faultless shape but the firmness of strength, the brightness of independence- characteristics which attract a chosen few, but repel most others."

This passage also highlights Tagore's mastery in portraying compelling and endearingly flawed characters. Hence his novels are classics in the vein of Dickens or Vikram Seth.

Another thing that I like is his youthfulness. If Geetanjali was impressive for its wonderful portrayal of nature and divinity, his best poetry and songs are those written from a young man's perspective...a romantic and carefree view of life and love. He was not a fuddy duddy, orthodox person despite his serious works. Even works that he wrote late in life had a youthful perspective. To him, life was full of wonder, curiosity, humour, vitality...if he lived in modern times, he would have experimented with rock guitars, I am sure!

And let us not forget, he was the one who christened Gandhi as the Mahatma...a recognition of a kindred maverick spirit.

Finally, his versatility is astounding. Plays, songs, poems, novels, music, art... there was no limit to his creativity.

So Tagore, son of Bengal, is a national and international treasure. I hope the next generation of readers get to enjoy his legacy as much as I have.

Ramrao - A book about the Indian farmer

Ramrao

I recently completed this book "Ramrao" by rural affairs reporter and writer, Jaideep Hardikar. It is about the hardships of the Indian farmers, with a focus on their unabating suicides in Vidharbha. It is also the personal story of Ramrao, one such farmer, who attempted suicide but survived, and went on to live a life of gratitude for his second chance, even if the problems that led to that act continue to beset him.

It is a poignant book, that humanizes those numbers we see in the newspapers. Consider this suicide note from one such farmer that Hardikar quotes at the start of the book:

Me aagala vegala, mahi nyarich jindagani;

mahye maran bhi aahe, jase avakali paani.

"I am unique; my life an uncommon odyssey;

My death will also be like untimely rain."

The story is also about village life, and the courage of the women who survive and prevail over the same troubles that took the lives of the men in their families, and the burden young women and men carry with the Hobson's choices they face: a degraded, laborious life in the city; or the endless misery of rainfed farming. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation, and go to the grave with the song still in them.", said Thoreau - that seems to apply to the Indian farmer.

Thus it is a book worth reading because you understand them more, and respect them more, for the valiant lives they lead in the face of great adversity. The prose is simple, sympathetic and calm, enabling the reader to weather a difficult subject.

Since we come from a farming family and have ex-farmers in our midst, I am sure this will appeal even more to us.

సుందరి

పూజారి రమణయ్య గారికి, కమలమ్మ గారికి సుందరి పుట్టినప్పుడు ఊరంతా "ఎంత చక్కనిది మీ బిడ్డ " అని మాయాబజార్ లో సూర్యకాంతం లా ఒకటే పొగిడారు. అమ్మాయిది ఆఖండ జాతకం, వరపుత్రిక అని , పాప జన్మగ్రహాలను బట్టి జాతకం రచించి, చెప్పాడు తండ్రి . చదువు, ధనం,అదృష్టం దేనికీ కొరత లేని జీవితం అని విశదీకరించాడు. కామందుకి ఈ పిల్ల నా కూతురికి పోటీయేమో అనే ఆలోచన కలిగేంతగా రమణయ్య ఆనందించాడు.

తండ్రి అమాయక,పరమభక్త పూజారి కావడంతో సుందరికి వయసుతో పాటు అందము,భక్తి కూడా కలిసి పెరిగాయి. తన భక్తీ , తన పూజలూ , గుడిలో తండ్రికి సాయం ,అమ్మకి అప్పడాలు ,వడియాలు,పచ్చళ్ళు తయారు చేయడంలో, తర్వాత అమ్మడంలో సాయం, రోజంతా గడిచిపోయేది. వీటన్నిటివల్ల, చదువు రాక,స్కూలు మానేసినా, భక్తురాలు, బుద్ధిమంతురాలు అనే బిరుదులు మాత్రం ఊరి వారు ఉదారంగా దానం చేశారు.

కొత్త పంచాంగం రాగానే శ్రద్ధగా తిరగేసి, మథించి ఏ మాసం, ఏ తిథిన ఏ పండగో, వ్రతమో, ఉత్సవమో,ఊరేగింపో క్షుణ్ణంగా వివరించగల సుందరికి తెలుగు, లెక్కలు, చదువు ఎందుకు "వంట"బట్టలేదో!!
"వంట" నైవేద్యానికీ, సంతర్పణలకీ మడితో రుచిగా,శుచిగా చెయ్యటం ఎలా వచ్చిందో !!
బల్లి,నల్లపిల్లి శకునాల శాస్త్రం బోధ పడినా సామాన్య శాస్త్రం, సాంఘిక శాస్త్రం బాధ పెట్టాయి.

కాలికి రాయి తగిలినా,చేతిలో ముల్లు విరిగినా దేవుడి కే మొర పెట్టుకునేది. కష్టం వస్తే దేవుడి పరీక్ష అనీ , పడుకోడానికి చలికాలంలో కటికనేల కాకుండా బొంత దొరికితే, దయామయుడి కటాక్షవీక్షణం అనీ తండ్రి కంటే ముందే గ్రహించేది.

తన తోటివారు బస్సులో పక్క ఊరికి వెళ్ళి చదువుతుంటే, తన పూర్వ జన్మ పాపంవల్ల , పురాకృతకర్మ వల్ల ఈ జన్మ లో చదువబ్బలేదనీ, బోలెడు పుణ్యం ఇప్పుడయినా చేసుకుంటే మళ్ళీ జన్మలో పంతులమ్మ గానో, కనీసం స్కూల్లో ఆయాగానో తనకు తగిన ఉద్యోగం దేవుడు ఏర్పాటుచేస్తాడని గాఢంగా నమ్మి ఆ మార్గంలోనే నడిచింది . అడుగు బెసగనివ్వలేదు, దారి అంగుళం కూడా తప్పలేదు.

తల్లి సరైన వైద్యం అందక, శరత్తులోనే శిశిరం వచ్చిన తోటలో ఆకులారాలిపోతే, కాలిపోతే తండ్రీ కూతుళ్ళిద్దరూ
ఒకరినొకరు ఓదార్చుకొని స్వామి లీలలకు విషాదంగా తల ఒగ్గి, సంబాళించుకున్నారు. పునిస్త్రీగా కాలం చేసింది పుణ్యాత్మురాలు అని ఊర్లో అందరూ అంటుంటే మిగిలిన మా గతేంటి అన్న ఆలోచనని అణిచేశారు.

ఆ ఊర్లో ఏ ముసలావిడనయినా "మీ ఆయన మంచం మీద రేపోమాపో అన్నట్లున్నాడుగా, ఆ అదృష్టం నీకు కావాలా? పోతావా?" అని ఏకాంతంలో అడిగితే, "చెప్పుతో కొడ్తా,నా సంగతి నీకెందుకు" అంటుందని నా దృఢనమ్మకం.

కాలం బడుగు పల్లెటూరి పూజారి కోసం ఆగదు కదా. దరిద్రంలా,చీడపురుగులా,గబ్బిలాల గుంపులా శరవేగంగా దూసుకెళ్లింది. సుందరి , చేమంతిలా చక్కని చుక్కలా, మల్లెమొగ్గలా మనోహరంగా నిర్మలంగా,ముద్దబంతిలా ముద్దరాలిగా పెరిగింది. తండ్రికి మాత్రం వదిలించుకోవలసిన కుంపటిలా, బరువులా , బండరాయిలా, గుదిబండగా ఎదిగింది. గోదాదేవి కథ చిన్నతనం నుండి తండ్రి చెప్పగా విని తను కూడా దేవుడినే పెళ్ళాడాలని కలలు కనేది.
నువ్వే దిక్కని, ప్రార్ధన సమయం అహర్నిశలుగా మార్చింది. నువ్వు ఎక్కువగా అభిమానించే స్త్రీ ఎవరంటే తడుముకోకుండా మీరాబాయి అని చెప్తుంది.

పూజారిగారింట్లో పెళ్లి మనింట్లో శుభకార్యం కాదేంట్రా అని ఊరుఊరంతా సుందరి పెళ్లికి సహాయానికి ముందుకొచ్చారు. వీరిద్దరు హర్షాతిరేకంతో, అమందానందంబొంది ఆనందాశృవులు కార్చి కృతజ్ఞతతో కుంచించుకుపోయారు. ఊరిపెద్దలిద్దరూ జయవిజయులని, ఊరివారంతా హరి పరివారమని, ఊరే వైకుంఠమని పులకించి పరవశించారు.

ఏదో గంతకు తగ్గ బొంతలా, ఆడపెళ్లివారి తాహత్తు కి తగిన సంబంధం జనమంతా కలిసి ( తమ మీద ఎక్కువ భారం పడకుండా జాగ్రత్త తీసుకుంటూ) కుదిర్చారు.
పెళ్ళికొడుకు కొంచెం మంద బుద్ధి. తాగుడంటారా ,తాగనివాడిని ఒక్కణ్ణి చూపించండి ఈరోజుల్లో. మిగిలిన వ్యసనాలా, అవి పిల్ల చేష్టలు. బాధ్యత,బంధం తగిలిస్తే తెంపుకొని పారిపోతాయి. మన ఊరికి పిలిస్తే పలికే దూరంలో గుళ్ళో పూజారికి అసిస్టెంట్. ఆయన పోతే ఇతనే పూజారి.చామన ఛాయ. అందం అంటారా, కనుముక్కు తీరైనవాడే. మన పూజారికి కూడా ముసలితనంలో వాడే ఆసరా. కావాలంటే రెండు గుళ్ళు నిభాయించగల సత్తా ఉన్నోడు.

పెళ్ళిమాటల్లో ఏమిఅడిగాడో తెలుసా!!. కట్నం మీరేమివ్వగలిగితే అదే. అమ్మాయికి భక్తి ఉందా? మడి,ఆచారం,సాంప్రదాయం , అణకువ తెలుసా? అంతే..... శభాష్.!!!

మార్చ కలిగినది,చేకూర్చకలిగినది ఏమీ లేకపోయినా మాటవరసకు , " సంబంధం మంచిదే కదా" అని తడబడుతూ సుందరి దగ్గర మాట నాన్చాడు తండ్రి. " పెళ్ళి ఏడు జన్మల బంధం అని నువ్వే చెప్పావు కదా. ఈ జన్మ, మరి కొన్ని జన్మలు నియమనిష్ఠలతో బతికితే ఎప్పటికయినా ఆయనకు నారాయణాంశతో, నాకు గోదాదేవి అంశతో మోక్షం దొరకదంటావా నాన్నా " అని దృఢవిశ్వాసం తో సుందరి ప్రశ్నించింది. ఆ నాన్న అవాక్కయ్యి , దుఃఖం అణుచుకుంటూ అందరితో పాటూ అక్షింతలు వేశాడు.

సుందరి భర్త "నిత్యాగ్నిహోత్రి." ఉదయం కళ్ళు తెరుస్తూనే బీడీ వెలిగించటానికి అగ్గిపుల్ల వెలిగించి, దీపదర్శనం చేసుకొని మంచం దిగుతాడు.   అన్నం పరబ్రహ్మస్వరూపం కనుక ఫలహారం లేదా చద్దన్నం అతని "సంధ్యావందనం". గుడిలో తప్పితే మిగతా అన్ని చోట్లా, అయిపోయిన బీడీతో కొత్త బీడీ వెలిగిస్తూ, చేతిలో ఎల్లవేళలా అగ్ని ధరిస్తాడు. సోమయాజి ( యజ్ఞం చేసినవాడు) కాకున్నా , సోమరి కనుక గుడిలో పనిచెయ్యటం అతనికి "యజ్ఞం" తో సమానం. యజ్ఞం అవగానే ఇంటికి చేరి భార్యకి బడితె " పూజ" చేస్తాడు. తిట్ల, బండ బూతుల "పురాణం" చదువుతాడు. ఆవిడ ఆ పని,ఈ పని చేసి సంపాదించిన పావలాపరక    "దక్షిణ" స్వీకరిస్తాడు. సాయంత్రం ప్రారంభించిన సోమ(సురా)పాన సేవనం ఏ రాత్రికో భూతలస్వర్గపు రంభో, ఊర్వశో ఇంట్లోంచి బయటికి తోయటంతో ముగుస్తుంది.                    సుందరి మాత్రం తన భర్త వాల్మీకి లానో, భక్తకన్నప్ప లానో మారుతాడని ఎదురుచూస్తూనే ఉంది.

పెళ్ళి చేసుకొని, మేకుల మీద పరిచిన పువ్వుల బాటలో నడుస్తున్నానని, ఆ బాట ఇనప ముళ్ళ తీగలా మారి, కాళ్ళకి చుట్టుకుని, అడుగు ముందుకు సవ్యంగా పడనివ్వటం లేదని తెలిసినా, ఒళ్ళంతా మనసంతా గాయాలతో రక్తమోడుతూ,హీనంగా, దీనంగా, అసహాయంగా, అనాథరక్షకుడిని,ఆర్తత్రాణపరాయణుడిని, తలుస్తూనే కొలుస్తూనే ఉంది సుందరి.

సకలరోగపాలకుడయిన ఆమె భర్త వరశాపంలాగానో లేక శాపవరంలాగానో ఆమెకు ఆడపిల్లని ప్రసాదించాడు. పేరు లక్ష్మి. ఆ లక్ష్మి పెద్దదై తన ఇంట్లో నడయాడడం, తాండవించటం చూడకుండా తండ్రి సముద్రుడు ఎండి ఎడారిగా మారి తడారిపోయి పండి, పోయాడు.

ఊరి జనం పడికట్టు పదాల ఉవాచ. " గుళ్ళో పూజారీ ,పుణ్యాత్ముడూ.మంచి వాళ్ళని దేవుడు తన దగ్గర ఉంచుకోవాలని త్వరగా తీసుకెళ్తాడు. అందుకే పరమపదించాడు."
" పరమ మదించాడు. పుచ్చి చచ్చాడు." నా ఆలోచన.

భర్త చనిపోతే,ఇంతటితో నూకలు అయిపోయాయి, శివైక్యం చెందాడు అని సుందరి నిబ్బరించుకుంది. జన్మ జన్మ కి ఈ భర్తే కావాలా అని అడిగినవాళ్ళు లేరు కానీ సుందరి సమాధానంగా " పరమాత్ముడు ఎలా తలుచుకొని, ఏది రాస్తే అదే " అనే అంటుందని నా ఊహ. మరో పెళ్లి తప్పు అన్న ఆలోచన సుందరిది. తనని తాను నమ్మించుకోవడం కాదు అది దృఢవిశ్వాసం. ఎప్పుడో వచ్చే నరకం కంటే తన గత జీవితం భయానకం అనిపించినా "అంతరాత్మహత్య" కి పాల్పడడమే సుందరి అలవాటు.

కష్టాలలో కాగి కాగి ఉక్కు ముక్క లా మారిన ఎడారి లాంటి మనసు లో మాతృప్రేమ అనే ఒయాసిస్సు ఏర్పడింది.
లక్ష్మి పెరుగుతున్న కొద్దీ శారీరక పెరుగుదల తో పాటు బుద్ధి వికసించడం లేదని తెలిసింది. పిచ్చి పిల్ల,పిచ్చి పిల్ల అని తోటిపిల్లలు ఏడిపిస్తుంటే చీర కొంగు కవచం చాటున లక్ష్మిని దాచి కాపాడి పెంచింది. సుందరి జీవితంలో ఇది మరొక కొత్త మలుపు. అన్నా,అయ్యా అని పిలిస్తే ఏమిటమ్మా      ( ఏమిటి +" అమ్మా" ) అని పలుకుతూ వంకరచూపులు చూసే ,తుంటరి చేష్టలు చేసే నీచులను అడ్డుకుంటూ, ఆపుకుంటూ కాలం ఎలా గడిపింది, గడిచింది అనేది మరో పెద్దకథ, వ్యథ.

ఇన్ని బాధల మధ్య, లక్ష్మి పెళ్ళి కాకుండానే తల్లి కాబోతుంది అని తెలిసిన రోజు సుందరి దేవుడిని వంద ప్రశ్నలు వేసింది. వెయ్యి సమాధానాలు కోరింది. లక్ష సార్లు చచ్చింది.కోటి జన్మలకి సరిపడా దుఃఖం, బాధ అనుభవించింది. కుమిలి కుమిలి, కమిలి కమిలి కొలిమిలో ఇనుపద్రవంలా ద్రవించింది,ప్రవహించింది.
తేరుకున్నాక, తెప్పరిల్లాక మనసు మళ్ళీ మొద్దుబారింది. పదునైన ఖడ్గం లా బతుకు యుద్ధానికి సిద్ధమైంది.

పరమాత్ముడిని నిందించటానికి నేనేంత. ఆయన ఆజ్ఞ లేనిదే చీమయినా కుట్టదుకదా. ఇన్ని కష్టాలు ఈ జన్మ లోనే కల్పించాడంటే మరో జన్మ లేదేమో. మోక్షమేనేమో. దయామయుడిని నిలదీయడానికి నా అర్హతేంటి. తప్పు చేసేనని భయంతో, బాధతో అసంఖ్యాకమయిన మొక్కులు మొక్కింది, ముడుపులు కట్టింది. ఉపవాసాలు, ప్రదక్షిణలు లెక్కలేనన్ని చేసింది. ముక్కోటి దేవతలను కోట్ల కోట్ల క్షమాపణలు కోరింది.   కాపాడమని వేడుకుంది. బిక్కచచ్చి బావురుమంది.

వేదశాస్త్రములు చదివినవారే ఎరుగరు సృష్టివిలాసం.
అల్పబుద్ధి తో జ్ఞానదాతనే సలుపకు పరిహాసం.
బాటసారి సినిమాలో భానుమతి పాడిన పాట స్ఫురణకి వచ్చి స్ఫూర్తిగా నిలిచింది

ఆడపిల్లే పుట్టినా బతికి బట్టకట్టలేదు. కట్టడానికి బట్టలు కొనలేని మన వారి వద్ద మనలేనని మనవరాలు వెళ్ళిపోయిందని మనస్సమాధానం చేసుకుంటూ, మనసు మభ్యపెట్టుకుంటున్నానని అర్థమై సరిపెట్టుకుంది సుందరి.

ఇంట్లో చావు సంభవిస్తే దుఃఖించాలా, సంతోష పడాలా తెలియని స్థితిలో   నిర్ఘాంత పోయి నిలిచిన మనిషి నాకు తెలిసి సుందరి మాత్రమే. లక్ష్మికి ఏమీ తెలియదు. చనిపోయిన పాపని చూపించి
" అమ్మా ఈ బొమ్మ ఎవరిదే" అని అడిగింది లక్ష్మి.

ఇప్పుడు సుందరి ఎక్కడ, ఎలా ఉంది అన్నది మీ ప్రశ్న.మీరు ఆ ఊరికి వెళ్ళండి. బస్సు దిగాక ఊళ్ళోకి నడుస్తుంటే   వినాయకుడి గుడి కనపడుతుంది. మీరు కొబ్బరి కాయ కొని దేవుడికి కొట్టండి.
మీ అదృష్టమో, దురదృష్టమో సమకూరితే ,తన మూడ్ ప్రకారం రాయి తీసుకుని "దేవుడేడిరా,ఎక్కడున్నాడ్రా వెధవా. దణ్ణం పెట్టావా కాస్కో" అని మిమ్మల్ని ప్రమాదకరంగా తరుముతూ, మీ వెంటపడుతున్నది లక్ష్మి.

ప్రపంచంలో ఉన్న మొత్తం దుఃఖం, దరిద్రం,దురదృష్టం, దైన్యం, నిస్సహాయత ఒక్క చోట కట్టకట్టి నిలబెట్టినట్టు   మీ ఎదురుగా నిలబడి,కనబడి మీ కాళ్ళ మీద పడి,నారాయణమూర్తి మీకు క్షమాగుణం ప్రసాదించాలని. మీరే నారాయణమూర్తి అని ఆక్రోశిస్తూ,     వదిలెయ్యమని బతిమిలాడ్తోందే ఆ ఆకారమే సుందరి.

ఇప్పటికీ ఉదయం, సాయంత్రం గుడి మెట్లు కడిగి,గుడి ముందు చీపురుతో శుభ్రం చేసి,నీళ్ళు చల్లి,ముగ్గు వేసి, గుడి ఎదురుగా, కొబ్బరికాయలు,పూజాద్రవ్యాలు, పూలు అమ్ముకుంటూ స్వామి సన్నిధిలోనే కాలం గడుపుతోంది. ఆయననే నమ్ముతోంది. జన్మ జన్మల భవిష్యత్ ఏమి నిర్దేశించాడో అని ఎదురు చూస్తోంది.

సుందరి ఏ కాలంనాటిది, వయసెంత, ఏ ఊరు అని ఆలోచిస్తున్నారా? సుందరి అజరామరురాలు. మీరు కళ్ళు విప్పి చూడాలనుకుంటే, చూస్తే సర్వత్ర, సర్వదా గోచరిస్తుంది ఒక నిర్భయ,ఒక దిశ కథలు విన్నా,పరువు హత్యలు చూస్తున్నా మారని యువతకి ,   గర్భం ధరించడం, మాతృత్వం గొప్ప వివరించకుండా --- గర్భగుడి ఘనత వినిపిస్తున్నాం.                                                                       మనతో నడిచే స్త్రీమూర్తులను సమానంగా చూడడం విస్మరించి , దేవతామూర్తులను స్మరిస్తున్నాం.

కాని ఈ ఆగడం ఆపాలని చేసే నిరంతర పోరాటం ఆగడం అసంభవం. ఈ పరిస్థితి ని మార్చాలని,నీచులను హతమార్చాలని నిలబడే వారే నిజమైన నాయకురాళ్ళు, నాయకులు.
వారే పాలనకు లాయకులు. (लायक)

ఏ సమాజమయినా ఉన్నతదశకు చేరిందనటానికి తార్కాణం అందరు తమ విలువనూ, స్వేచ్ఛనూ,హక్కులను గుర్తించి బాధ్యతగా,సమానంగా నివసించడమే.

My Champs Experience

Hello everyone. We had our championship meet yesterday and that marks the end of the season. Now it is time to retrospect.

Yesterday for our champs meet I reached the pool around 6:45 a.m, and warmpus started at 8:10. We were competing with 11 other teams,so the pool was crowded. During warmups I felt nervous, but after swimming a couple laps I was ready to race.

After warmups and team cheer the races started.During Champs I swam 4 events. Krupa atta and Adi anna came to cheer me on for 2 of the events. Before each event I focused on nothing but the race.I wasn't fast enough to win a ribbon,or medal. In my butterfly race I finished 3rd in my heat, but I didn’t win anything because I didn’t make the top 3 overall.

Analysis

I feel like,I have improved over the course of the season.I have improved my freestyle time by 14 sec ,breaststroke by 8 sec ,and butterfly by 13 seconds.However one thing I can improve on are my turns,because one recurring theme was that in the first half,I led the race,but in the second half ,I lost momentum .I also need to work on my stamina as on the last leg of the race,I slowed down .

My learnings

Over the course of the season, I have learned new techniques like turns and diving.While I have stated I need to work on turns,I can still do them well . Coaches also taught me how to dive,and it took me few weeks to get comfortable but I like diving now.

Conclusion

I enjoyed my first year of swim league and made a lot of improvements. This experience was great as it allowed me to swim competitively and hang out with friends. I am glad that I got this opportunity and I can't wait for the next season. Let's go Dolphins!!

Summer Swim League

Hello everyone, it’s summer vacation for me and do you know what's my favorite summer activity? The answer to that is swimming. Earlier in the year my parents signed me up for East Bay Swim League which is a summer swim league and you can find information about it here .

When I first heard about it, I was skeptical about participating as I was not sure if I was good enough to make the team. Mom and dad strongly encouraged me to go for the try outs and in retrospect I am glad that I did.

Tryouts:

My tryouts were on March 16th. Mom and I drove to Chabot College, our practice location. I was excited to try out for the swim team. After we reached the pool I met the head coaches of the swim team I would eventually join.

The coaches Aaron and Jesse asked me some questions about myself, my experience with swimming and my hobbies. They asked me to get into the pool for a speed test. For reference,the pool is 25 yards one way.So I had to swim 50 yards,to do the speed test. I finished with a freestyle time of 72 seconds. After the test I was curious to know if I made the team and I did it.

Daily Practice:

We have practice sessions Monday- Thursday 6:00-7:30 PM. Our practice session started on April 4th and will continue until July 21st.

Season overview:

We have six meets in one season, three home meets and three away meets. However, if you get selected for champs you have to compete in a seventh meet at Chabot College[our home pool].

Types of swim meets:

There are two kinds of swim meets. They are dual meets and tri-meets. Dual meets are when only 2 teams compete with each other and during tri-meets 3 teams face off against each other.

Placing in the meets is also different,for dual meets the league gives ribbons up to eighth place,while for tri-meets it is ninth place.Even so placing at a tri-meet is harder than a dual meet

because of the fact that there are more swimmers competing in a given race.

Improvements on my times:

In 2 months I have improved my freestyle swim time by 30 seconds. I can swim 2 laps of freestyle in 40 seconds.On all the other strokes (Breaststroke,backstroke,and butterfly),I have improved my times by more than 12 seconds.

Champs Meet Selection

On 7/10/22 we received an email from the teams manager Jenny Kubicki that I had made it to the championship meet.The championship meet isn’t available for everyone teams are incredibly picky about who to send for champs which goes to show you how much I’ve improved. Our Champs meet is on 07/23/22.

What is “Champs”?

The answer to that is that champs is when the best swimmers from every team come together and compete.Making to champs isn’t easy as teams have a limit on how many they can put on the champs roster,so the selection is tough. As a result only the best swimmers get to go to compete in champs.

On my team,among my age group I have won 5 ribbons, as of 7/17/22 .In my opinion swim team is fun as it allows me to be competitive while enjoying the best parts of summer which are swimming and hanging out with my friends.I hope my team[Bay Area Dolphins] wins.

Kids Against Hunger

Hi, I am back with another post. We started volunteering about 3 years back during holiday season. This year we volunteered at Kids Against Hunger. Yesterday my dad found this opportunity to volunteer at the Pleasanton location. You can find more information about the program here. We went to volunteer with a group of 35 people. There were a few kids in our group. Once all the volunteers arrived, we walked into a large room. We were all given hair caps to make sure that hair doesn't fall in the meal packs while packing. We were also asked to sanitize our hands and wear gloves. In the room there were 8 tables with different boxes, weighing scales, funnels, hot press and measuring cups. We were all assigned a role based on our age.

Before the packing began the organizer described the process. There are 5 stations

Funnel Station
Food Station
Weighing Station
Sealing Station
Packing station

The process of packing starts from the funnel station. On our table there were 2 boys (including myself) and we were in charge of this. Our job is to open the bag and put the funnel inside the bag and hold it tight so that the people at the food station can put 1 cup of Soy ( protein) ,1 tbsp of dehydrated vegetables ( minerals and also flavor), 1 tbsp of milk powder ( calcium and iron) and 1 cup of rice (carbohydrates). Once all these are added in the bag we take the filled bag to the weighing station and leave it in the stand and we move on to the next bag.

Next, the weighing station volunteers weighs the bag to make sure it is between 390 and 396 grams. After the weighing station is done weighing the meal bag is moved to the sealing station. Here the bags are sealed using hot press. This is one station where kids are not allowed to work. Once the bags are sealed they are packed into boxes. Each box contains 36 meal kits. Lastly, all the packed boxes are transported in shipping containers to areas where there is a need. One bag can provide a meal for 6 people !! Isn't that amazing!?

During our break time they showed us a video about how the program started and the real impact of this program. It was a 5 min video we saw how the food is transported to Haiti and how it is distributed. In the video I saw kids of different age groups eating the food that was cooked, with out complaining. It made me feel thankful for what I have. If time permits I want to volunteer once a month to help this cause.

By the end of the session we packed an eye popping 9936 meals that are going to be sent to Haiti or any other place that has a food shortage. Each table made an average of 150 bags of food.

I hope that one day we will be able to eradicate hunger in the world. I understand that it is a long way to go, but as the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said " A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". It was a great learning experience and I am thankful that I got to be a part of this effort.

ప్రశాంత అయస్కాంతంలా "ఆకర్షించి" సంతులనం నేర్పించావు.

నవ్విస్తే సంతోషపెట్తే నన్ను ప్రేమిస్తావనుకున్నా.

ప్రేమసాగరంలో మునకలేసి అలసిపోయా .

అర్థించి ప్రార్థించి ప్రేమను పంచమని వేడుకోలు తో వశం చేసుకుందామనుకున్నా.
స్వార్ధించి ఆర్జించటం   మంచికాదని వంచన వదలి వీడుకోలు చెపుదామని వచ్చా.

ఎదురు చూసింది నిష్కర్షగా నిర్దయగా దిక్కులు పట్టి పొమ్మని చీదరింపు.
ఎదురైంది నిష్కల్మషంగా నిర్మలంగా అక్కున చేర్చి రమ్మని ఆదరింపు.

ఏ దేవుళ్ళో కరుణించారని వరమిచ్చారని అరక్షణం ఆలోచించా.
ఆ దేవత నీవేనని మరుక్షణం గ్రహించా నీ వశమై అనుక్షణం పరవశించా.

నీకే మనస్కరించి నువ్వే సంస్కరించి పురస్కరించావు.
ఏమివ్వను? ఏమీ ఇవ్వను.ఇవ్వలేను.నమస్కరిస్తా.

అల్పాన్ని శిల్పంగా మార్చిన ఉలి పట్టిన స్థపతి ఈ నెచ్చెలి.
చెదపట్టిన మదిలో మంచిని ఎంచి గుడిగా మలిచి నిలిచిన దేవి నా చెలి.

మరో( నో) ప్రపంచం.

ఇసకలో గుండ్రంగా గునగున లక్ష్మి కోపంగా ముందర నడుస్తోంది . సిలిండరు, లడ్డుండ ముద్దుపేర్లు తలుచుకొని నవ్వు ,ఆయాసం కలిపి నడుస్తున్నా. బస చేసిన తాజ్ హోటల్ కి తిరిగి వెళ్ళే దారి తెలియట్లా. ఇంత ఉదయాన్నే జనం ఎవరూ కనపడట్లా. రూమ్ నంబరు తను గుర్తుంచుకొని , నేను దారి గుర్తుంచుకునేలా పని ఎప్పట్లానే సమానం గా పంచింది .

ఎవరో తెల్లని లాల్చీ పైజమా గారు అక్కడ కూర్చుని ఉన్నారు. మమ్మల్ని చూసి పలకరింపుగా నవ్వారు.
చిన్నప్పుడు హిందీ ప్రాథమిక చదివింది. సమయం దొరికితే హిందీ వాడటం మహా ఇష్టం.
తన హిందీ భాష ప్రయోగం మొదలెట్టింది. ఇక వినండి.

వారు ::--- షాజహాన్.
నా ఖర్మకి ఆయన సమానమయిన తెలుగు ప్రతిభాపాటవ ప్రయోక్త.

(ఉందా కామోసు.ఇంకా నయం లడ్డుండా అనలేదు.ఈవిడ కొద్ది రోజులు తెలుగు టీవీ సీరియల్స్ కి కథలు ,స్క్రీన్ప్లే రాయాలని ట్రై చేసింది.నిన్న రాత్రి రూమ్ కి రావడం ఆలస్యం అయితే తాగి,తులిశాకులు నమిలి వచ్చావందిరాత్రి గ్లాస్ మేట్ వీడే. నువ్వే ఆ పేరు చెప్పావ్ అని 1000 ఎపిసోడ్ల ధారావాహిక నడిపిస్తుంది. )

వారు ::--- I said cheater. (మోసగాడా దగాగాడా) . ఝూట్ బోల్ రహే హో
                (చెయ్యి చూపించాడు వెనక్కి. అది హోటల్ వెనక భాగం కాబోలు .)
                మాడం యహీఁ సే గుజర్ తీ హై. చక్కర్ లగాకే ప్రయాస్ కర్కే వాపస్ ఆతీ హై. Five miles?
ఈవిడ ::---గుజరాతీ నహీఁ ఆంధ్రా . పాయసం నహీఁ.
                డయాబెటిస్ వల్ల ఆయాసం , ఏనుగూ నహీఁ . మీరు చెప్పండీ వెధవకి.
వారు ::--- వెధవ?
నేను ::-- వెధవల్ మీన్స్ కోర్ట్స్ ఇన్ లాటిన్. యూ కెన్ ఆస్క్ గిరీశం.
వారు ::--- జాన్ గ్రిషాం చెప్పా ? సరే పోయింది.
స్వగతం ::-- నా ప్రాణం , మతి త్వరలో పోతాయి.
              ఇక మొత్తం తెలుగులోనే చెప్పుకుందాం. ఈ బాధపడే భాగ్యం ఎందుకు కలిగిందో మీకు చెప్పాలి.
                  " పండగ డిస్కౌంట్స్ మాయా మాల్ లో బాగా    ఇస్తున్నారటండీ. లక్కీ డ్రా కూడా అట. " అంది మా
ఆవిడ నేను ఇంట్లో అడుగు పెట్టగానే. ఈ కథంతా అక్కడ ప్రారంభం అయింది. "ఆఫీస్ నుంచి వచ్చినట్లే లేరు. ఎంత ఫ్రెష్ గా ఉన్నారో." అంటే అర్థం వెంటనే బయల్దేరండి.
                తనవంతుగా "చిన్నప్పుడు మూడు నెలలకో సబ్బు ఇచ్చేదాన్నమ్మాయ్ వీడికి " అంటోంది అమ్మ. అందుకే స్కూల్లో మిగతా వాళ్ళు ఇరుక్కొని కూర్చొని నాకు ప్రత్యేకంగా ఒక టేబుల్ ఇచ్చేవారు అని గొణుక్కున్నా.
             " నీకు మాత్రం నెలకు రెండు సబ్బులిచ్చేదే మీ అమ్మ . పొట్టిగా, నల్లగా ఉండేదానివి కదా"
             "అప్పుడేదో చిన్నవయసు ,తెలియని తనం అత్తయ్యా " అని భారంగా , ఘోరంగా సిగ్గు పడింది. మెలికలు తిరిగే ఛాన్స్ మాత్రం లేదుగా.
"ఇంటిల్లిపాదికీ తమ్ముడు బట్టలు పంపించాడండి. దానికి మరికొన్ని కొందాం. కాలేజ్ కి వెళ్ళే పిల్ల కదా."
కాలేజి అంటే ఫాషన్ షో నా? పీరియడ్సా . బట్టల పెరేడ్సా? మాటలు గొంతు లోనే కుక్కేశా.
"పాప రాదా మనతో బట్టలు సెలక్ట్ చేసుకోవడానికి?"సమాధానం తెలిసే అడిగా.

"ఇంటర్మీడియెట్ అండీ. అదీ.ఇంటర్మీడియెట్. క్లాత్ కొంటా.కొలతలకి ఇంటికే
వస్తాను అన్నాడు రామారావ్."
గుండె కూడా తుమ్మితే క్షణం ఆగుతుందట. ఇండియాలోచదువుకునే పిల్లలకు మాత్రం విశ్రాంతి అంటే తెలియదు నిరంతరం తిరిగే గ్రహాల్లా,సముద్రపు అలల్లా.

" 1004/-- . అయింది మాడం. ( ఆడవాళ్లను మీరు అనే కంటే మేడమ్ అంటే పులకిస్తారనే సైకాలజీ కాచి వడపోశాడు) . వెయ్యి రూపాయలకి ఒక కూపన్. మరో 996 కొంటే ఇంకో కూపన్ వస్తుంది. మీరు , సారూ బట్టలు చూడండి. మగాళ్ళకయితే రెలియన్సా, రేమండ్సా , ఇంకోటా కొంచెమే ఛాయిస్. లేడీస్ కయితే ఉప్పాడ ,కోట, చందేరి , కంచి మరెన్నో వెరైటీలు. ఒకటి కట్టినప్పుడు లావుగా,మరోదాంట్లో పొట్టిగా,పొట్టగా లేదా సన్నగా ఉంటామని భయం.మీరు ఫర్లేదు. ఏదయినా నప్పుతుంది మాడం . ధర్మవరం కొత్త స్టాక్ వచ్చింది మాడం. చూడండి. (ధర్మవరమా! పోలవరం పూర్తి అవుతుంది ఆడవాళ్ళంతా ఒక్క సంవత్సరం వీడి బారిన పడక పోతే.). మీకు అన్నీ భలే బాగుంటాయ్."
"తమ్ముడూ మీ ఇల్లెక్కడ? "
పక్కన ఆడుతున్న కోతి పిల్లని పిలిచి కడుపుకు కరుచుకునే కోతి లా కనపడింది మా ఆవిడ.
" కైలాసపురం మేడం."
" ఆవకాయ తింటావా. పెట్టారా పచ్చళ్ళు. ?" ఆర్ద్రత గా ఈవిడ.
" మధ్య తరగతి కూడా కాదు కదా అక్కా . డబ్బేది? భార్యకి ఆవకాయ ఇష్టం. నాకు మాగాయ అమ్మకి నిమ్మకాయ, నాన్నకి దబ్బకాయ." ఆవేదన ,ఆక్రోశం అన్నీ ఒకే సారి వాడి కంఠంలో ,

ఎంత ప్రాక్టీసు తర్వాత పర్ ఫెక్షనో. కన్యాశుల్కం వెంకటేశం లాగా (గేదె పెరుగు చమే , చేగోడీ చమే) చమకం చదువుతున్నాడు వీడు.
" రాత్రి ఇంటికి వెళ్ళేటప్పుడు రా. నీకు , మరదలికి, అమ్మకి ,నాన్నకి పచ్చళ్ళిస్తా. "
"మీ దయ ,జాలి ,అభిమానం చాలా గ్రేట్ అక్కా. కర్ణివా ,బలిణివా, శిబిణివా, దధీచిణివా, థెరిసావా."
"భర్తభక్షిణిరా దుర్మార్గుడా" స్వగతం.
" తమ్ముడు. జనరల్ గా ఎక్కువ మాట్లాడితే నాకు నచ్చదు. నువ్వు వేరు. ఉంటా. కలుద్దాం. "
ఒకే సమయం లో ఒకే మనిషి ఒక దేవతగా ఒక పిచ్చి దానిలా కనపడటం ఒక్కోసారి ఓకే. పాసిబుల్.
" నోరు లేని వెధవ. అడగడం కూడా రాదు." .
హైనా , రాబందుల నోట్లో నించి ,కొండచిలువ కడుపు లోంచి వాటికి తెలీకుండా మాంసంముక్క తస్కరించే మాయావి .భూత్ మహల్ ని దేవాలయం అని టికెట్ పెట్టి చూపించగల మేథావి.

తను కదిలింది. అక్కడే తచ్చాడి , " ఈ సారి పచ్చళ్ళు అమ్మడానికి రామోజీరావు గారిని కలిసినప్పుడు సోమరాజు గారు అడిగారని చెప్పు." చేతకాని కసి తో బుసకొట్టి వచ్చా.
చీరల సెక్షన్. పక్క ఫ్యామిలీ వాళ్ళ డ్రైవర్ వచ్చాడు.
" సార్ పెట్రోల్ రేట్ పెరిగింది. డబ్బులు సరిపోలేదు. ఫుల్ గా కొట్టించాలంటే మరో 500 కావాలి."ఇచ్చాడతను.
" ఎందుకయినా మంచిది. మరో 500 ఇవ్వండి. నేను ఇక్కడికొచ్చి తిరిగి వెళ్ళే లోపు మళ్ళీ పెరిగుండొచ్చు." డ్రైవర్.
" సర్. వీరికి పోయిన సారి లక్కీ డ్రా లో కార్ వచ్చింది. " చీరల సేల్స్ మాన్ చెప్పాడు. పక్కకి తిరిగి కంగ్రాట్స్ సర్ అన్నా.
" పెట్రోల్ కీ , డ్రైవర్ శాలరీ కి కష్టమై ఇల్లు బ్యాంకు లో తనఖా పెట్టా . ఈ సారి డ్రాలో ఇల్లు తగులుతుందని షాపింగ్ కి తెచ్చింది సార్." దీనంగా చెప్పాడతను.

చీరల సెలక్షన్, నా బట్టల సెలక్షన్ ,మరో రెండు పచ్చళ్ళ ప్రామిస్ ల తర్వాత 17560 బిల్ తో సెటిలయింది తను.
           సైంధవుడు పద్మ వ్యూహం లోకి వెళ్ళనివ్వడు. ఇక్కడి సెక్యూరిటీ గార్డు సైంధవుడు బయటికి వెళ్ళనివ్వడు.
" మేడం కాస్మెటిక్స్ మరో 440 కి కొంటే మరో కూపన్. పాప చదువుతోంది కదా. కొనండి".
బిల్లుల మీద స్టాంప్ వేస్తూ,బట్టలు చెక్ చేస్తూ అరక్షణం లో అన్నీ ఆకళింపు చేసుకునే ప్రజ్ఞాశాలి . 20030/-- తో బయట పడ్డాం.
                     రాత్రి ఒక్కొక్కరు వచ్చి పట్టుకెళ్ళాక , తెల్లార్లు టాక్స్ అధికారులు బోర్డు , లైసెన్సు లేకుండా పచ్చళ్ళ వ్యాపారం చేస్తున్నానని దాడిచేసినట్లు మగత నిద్రలో పీడ కలలు. చీమ చిటికేసినా , దోమ దగ్గినా, ఈగ ఈల వేసినా   ఉలిక్కిపడి చచ్చా. అవి కూడా వినబడని నిశ్శబ్దం ఉంటే తప్ప నిద్ర పట్టని పరిస్థితి. "గలగలమనగూడదు ఆకులలో గాలి జలజలమనరాదు.. అలలతో కొండవాగు " అనేంత భావుకత నా భార్యకి లేకపోవడమే కాదు , గురక కూడా.
       నెలన్నర తర్వాత ఫోన్ , వాట్సప్ ,మెయిల్ ,మెసేజ్ అన్నీ వచ్చాయి.

          సోమరాజు గారు.
" మీకు మా సంస్థ మీద ఉన్న ఆదరాభిమానాల వల్ల మనస్ఫూర్తిగా, ఆనందంగా చేసిన కొనుగోళ్లు మీ మా అభివృద్ధి కారకాలు. మీరు మా లక్కీ డ్రా లో ఎంపికయిన విజేతలలో ఒకరిగా నిలిచారు. నలుగురు లేదా అంతకు లోపల (మీ) కుటుంబ సభ్యుల పేర్లిస్తే ,ముంబైకి రాను పోను టికెట్లు , మూడు నక్షత్రాల హోటల్ లో బస భోజనవసతి.ముందుగా ఎంపిక చేసిన ముఖ్యప్రదేశాల సందర్శన కు ఐదు రోజులు   ( తప్పనిసరి ప్రత్యేక పర్యాటక ఆకర్షణ   ఒకరోజు పూర్తిగా అక్కడి మా మాయా మాల్ బ్రాంచ్ ) కారు ఏర్పాటు చేయబడతాయి. షాపింగ్,మరియు పేర్కొనని మిగిలిన ఖర్చులు మీవే. అభినందనలు.
షరా ::--- ఈ టికెట్లు, రశీదులు కక్కుర్తిగా సమర్పించి తమ ఆఫీస్ లో. L..T.C. రీఇంబర్స్మెంట్ తీసుకోరాదు.
                    " వీడెప్పుడూ అదృష్టవంతుడే అమ్మాయి. ఆయన వీడి అక్షరాభ్యాసం 20000 పెట్టి ఘనంగా చేస్తే , 100 పలకలు, 1000 బలపాలు వచ్చాయి "
" అత్తయ్యా . మా పెళ్లి కి కూడా గోడ గడియారాలు , టైంపీసులు , టీ కాఫీ సెట్లు , దేవుడి పటాలు , మిల్క్ కుక్కర్లు , ఫోటో ఫ్రేములు , డిన్నర్ సెట్లు కళ్యాణమంటపం నిండి పొయ్యాయి. మా నాన్న తెలివిగా గిఫ్ట్ షాప్ వాడిని పిలిచి As and where they are పద్ధతి లో , రవాణా ఖర్చు వాడిదే అని అమ్మి 10000 వస్తే మాకే ఇచ్చారు. కొన్ని మిగిలితే , దాచి , మొన్నటిదాకా పుట్టిన రోజులకి, పెళ్లిళ్ళకి, మిగతా అన్ని ఫంక్షన్స్ కి అందరికీ ఇచ్చాం కదా. "
      " మీరిద్దరూ వెళ్ళిరండే అమ్మాయి. పాపను నేను చూస్తాలే. కాస్త వాడికీ గాలి మార్పు."    ఏర్పాట్లు చూసుకుని, అమ్మతో టచ్ లో ఉండమని స్నేహితులతో, పక్కింటి వాళ్లతో చెప్పి నిన్న ముంబై చేరాం.
                        ఈవిడ కఠినమైన డైటింగ్ లో ఉంది. కొంచెం భోజనప్రియురాలు. రోజుకు అరవై సిగరెట్స్ కాల్చే వాడికి డాక్టర్ ఏదన్నా తినేముందు ,తిన్న తర్వాత కాల్చుకొమ్మని సలహా ఇచ్చాడు. వారం తర్వాత ఇంప్రూవ్మెంట్ బాగా ఉందే అంటే రోజుకు ముప్పై సార్లు తినడమే కష్టంగా ఉంది అన్నాడట. ఈవిడకి భోజనం మానమని వేరే డైట్ చెప్పారు. ఉదయాన్నే పావుకిలో మొలకెత్తిన పెసలలో వంద గ్రాముల వేరుసెనగ పప్పు , ముక్కలు చేసిన బెల్లం మాత్రం తిని కాఫీ తాగుతుంది. 11.30 కి ఏదో ఒక జ్యూస్. ఒంటిగంటకు ఒక పుచ్చకాయ , సగం పనస, రెండు ఆరెంజెస్ ,ఒక పైనాపిల్ ,అరడజను అరటిపళ్ళు వంటివి సీజన్లో పండ్లు లైట్ గా పుచ్చుకుంటుంది. సాయంత్రం కీరా , కేరట్ ముక్కలు ప్లేట్ నిండా ( సైజ్ అడగద్దు) , రాత్రి చపాతీలు పప్పు. ఈ సారి డైటీషియన్ దగ్గరకి వెళ్తే మామూలు భోజనం పద్ధతికే మారిపొమ్మంటుందని నా దృఢనమ్మకం .
ఈ దినచర్యలో భాగంగానే మార్నింగ్ వాక్ పేరుతో పది అడుగులు అటూఇటూ వేస్తాం. ఇదీ ప్రస్తుతం.

                      చౌహాన్ గారు పది మాటలు మాట్లాడితే తొమ్మిది కొడుకు గురించే. ఉదయాన్నే తను వాకింగ్ కి , కొడుకు జాగింగ్ కి వస్తారు. తిరిగి కలిసే ప్రదేశం ఇది. తను తెచ్చుకున్న ఫ్లాస్కునుంచి మాకూ కాఫీ ఇచ్చారు.
అక్కడే కూర్చుని కబుర్లు చెప్పుకున్నాం. తనది వెండివస్తువుల వ్యాపారం. అందులోనే బట్టల దుకాణం.దుబాయ్ లో ఉద్యోగం చేసి డబ్బు సంపాదించి వ్యాపారం మొదలెట్టి కోట్లు గడించాడు. తను దుబాయ్ లో ఉండగా భార్యా,కొడుకు ఉద్యోగరీత్యా ఆంధ్రా లో ఉన్న భార్య తల్లితండ్రుల దగ్గర ఉండటం తో వారికి తెలుగు వచ్చు. వారి ద్వారా తను కొంచెం నేర్చుకున్నాడు.
        ఒకరోజు కొడుకు దగ్గర ఒక ఫోటో చూసింది భార్య. ఫోటో వెనకాల రాణి అని సంతకం. కొడుకుని నిలదీసింది.

అదే రాణి కాదు. అందానీ రాణి. నా ఫ్రెండ్.
(మా ఆవిడ నా చెవులో " అంబానీ,అదానీ,అద్వానిల బంధువు" అని తీర్మానించేసింది)

చౌహాన్ గారు మధ్యలో దూరి వివరాలడిగి ప్రేమ పెళ్లికి ఒప్పుకున్నారు . త్వరలో పెళ్లిమాటలకు వెళ్ళాలి. కొడుకు పొడగరి,సొగసరి, గడసరి ,అన్నింటిలో నేర్పరి.
              ఇంతలో డ్రైవర్ తీసుకెళ్ళడానికి వచ్చాడు. బాబు రాలేదని చూస్తుంటే, తన కార్ లో అప్పటికే వెళ్ళిపోయారని చెప్పాడు. మాకు తన కొడుకుని గర్వంగా పరిచయం చెయ్యలేకపోయిన బాధ కనిపించింది.

       రోజూ మాయా మాల్ వారి కార్ ఉదయం 9.30 కి వస్తుంది. రాత్రి 8.30కి దింపేస్తుంది. ఉదయం ప్రతిరోజూ కలుద్దామని నిర్ణయం. రెండు గంటల పరిచయంలోనే సన్నిహితుడు అనిపించే వ్యక్తి.

      ఆ రోజంతా ఊరెరిగింపు జరిగి అలసిపోయినా మర్నాడు ఉదయాన్నే లేపి లాక్కెళ్ళింది. మార్నింగ్ వాక్ కన్నా ఆయనను కలవాలని ఆత్రుత. వెండి మరియు బట్టలు కదా. డ్రైవర్ వచ్చి , వీళ్ళు బయల్దేరాక , అమ్మ గారు చిన్నబాబు గారిని ఎయిర్ పోర్ట్ కి మేనమామ ఫామిలీని తీసుకురమ్మని పంపారని చెప్పి అందరి ఉత్సాహం నీరుకార్చాడు.మర్నాడు బాబు కలవడానికి రాకపోవడానికి మరో కుంటిసాకు. చౌహాన్ గారు కూడా కొంచెం చిరాకుతో కూడిన ఇబ్బంది పడ్డారు. ఈ మధ్య కాలంలో ఆయన చాలా దగ్గరి వాడయ్యాడు. పరిస్థితి గమనించి , తేలికపరచటావికి రాత్రి భోజనానికి పిలిచా..
దారిలో ఈవిడ భార్యకొడుకులకి ఆయన మీద చులకన భావం అని నిర్ధారించేసింది.

                  రాత్రి ఆయన వచ్చాక పిచ్చాపాటి----
" భోజనానికి ముందు స్పిరిట్ హైస్పిరిట్స్ లో ఉంచుతుంది "
" ఈవిడ ఫైటింగ్ స్పిరిట్ తో ఈవిల్ స్పిరిట్ గా మారి దంచుతుంది"
" మరేంచేద్దాం?"
" సాఫ్ట్ డ్రింక్ లేదా జ్యూస్ మంచిది. విస్కీ రిస్కీ."
" అరే !! అతను రష్యన్ కనుక అలా చెప్పాడు. తర్వాత వోడ్కా మంచిదని చెప్పుంటాడు."
       ఒక నిమిషం దీర్ఘంగా ఆలోచించి " ఇతను డోస్టోయెవిస్కీ తమ్ముడో, దగ్గరి బంధువు అయి ఉంటాడు " అని రహస్యాన్ని ఛేదించారు.
      విస్కీరిస్కీ కమ్యూనిస్టు , తను కాపిటలిస్ట్ కనుక రెండూ వేరు వేరు సిద్ధాంతాలని, ఎప్పుడయినా సరే రెండింటినీ కలపటం మంచిది కాదని, బీరు విస్కీ రెండిటినీ కలపమని సెలవిచ్చారు . పడుకోవటం రాత్రి రెండింటికి కనుక మర్నాడు కలవటం కుదరదన్నారు. ఐదో రోజు సాయంత్రం ప్రయాణం కనుక ఆరోజు తప్పకుండా తమ షాప్ కి రమ్మని ఆహ్వానించారు.

           మర్నాడు ఉదయం మద్యపానం, ధూమపానం, జరదా వంటి దుర్వ్యసనాలు, వాటివల్ల జరిగే నష్టాలు ,చక్కటి ఉదాహరణలతో వివరించే ఉపన్యాసం ఏకధాటిగా గంటసేపు వింటానని , రాత్రి ఇంటికి వెళ్ళేముందు చెప్పారు. ఆయన ఈ వ్యసనం నుంచి బయటపడాలని చేస్తున్న బలమైన ప్రయత్నం హృదయాన్ని తాకింది.చలించిపోయాను.
     " వక్త ఎవరు సార్? ఎక్కడ సార్?" గద్గదస్వరం తో అడిగాను.
           " మా ఆవిడ. మా పడగ్గదిలో " చెప్పి వెళ్ళిపోయాడు.

          మర్నాడంతా మాయామాల్లో షాపింగ్. వారి ఆతిథ్యానికి , గౌరవమర్యాదలకి ఈవిడ పూర్తి గా ఉబ్బితబ్బిబ్బయ్యింది. రెండు   క్రెడిట్ కార్డ్స్ లిమిట్స్ పూర్తిగా వాడేసుకుంది. జేబులో మిగిలిన కొద్దిపాటి డబ్బు అత్యవసరాలకు ఉండాలని, మా ఊరిలో విమానం దిగి ఇంటికి వెళ్ళడానికి క్యాబ్ ఖర్చు మనదేనని విభేదించి , వాదించి , నచ్చచెప్పి , బతిమిలాడి బామాలి చివరికి ఒప్పించి , ఊపిరి పీల్చుకున్నానని గర్వంగా చెప్పగలను.   ఆస్థాన ఐంద్రజాలికుడు రంగప్రవేశం చేసి రెండువేల రూపాయలు మాత్రం వెంటనే చెల్లించి , ఎంచుకున్న వస్తువులను కొరియర్ ద్వారా ఇంటి దగ్గర పొంది , మిగతా డబ్బు అప్పుడు చెల్లించే సదవకాశాన్ని అత్యంత విలువయిన , నమ్మకమయిన కస్టమర్లమయిన మాకు అందించాడు. మా వినోదపర్యటన ఖర్చంతా , వడ్డీతో సహా లాగేశారని అనిపించడం నా దురాలోచనల   (దూరాలోచనలని నా అభిప్రాయం ) మెదడుకే సాధ్యమని ఆవిడ అభిప్రాయం .

             ఆఖరి రోజు రాత్రి   ప్రయాణం.   సొంత పనులకు కార్ రాదని, రాత్రికి ఎయిర్ పోర్ట్ లో దించడానికి మాత్రం వస్తానని మాయా మాల్ డ్రైవర్ చెప్పేశాడు. ఉదయాన్నే కాఫీ తాగుతూ, చౌహాన్ గారి షాప్ కి వెళ్ళడం గురించి మాట్లాడుకుంటున్నాం. రూమ్ బాయ్ సునీల్ , ఒక షిఫ్ట్ హోటల్ లో మరో షిఫ్ట్ క్యాబ్ డ్రైవర్ గా పని చేస్తాడట. పైగా చౌహాన్ గారి డ్రైవర్ అతని తండ్రి. వారి ఇల్లు , కథా కమామీషు అన్నీ తెలుసుకనక తను తీసుకువెళ్లి, అక్కడే ఉండి, తిరిగి తీసుకు వచ్చే బేరం కుదుర్చుకున్నాం.

సునీల్ సడెన్ గా " మీది విశాఖపట్నం కదా సార్" అన్నాడు.

" అవును. ఎలా తెలిసింది? "
" నిన్న సాయంత్రం మీ చెప్పులలో , షూస్ లో ఇసక చూశాను. నిన్న మార్నింగ్ వాక్ నించి వచ్చి శుభ్రం చేసుకున్నారు. కాబట్టి బీచ్ కి వెళ్ళారు. గవ్వలు , పూసలు , బీచ్ లో దొరికేవి ఏవీ కొనలేదు. అంటే మీకు బీచ్ అలవాటు. మీ ఊరిలో సముద్రం ఉంది. ఆంధ్రా నుంచి వచ్చారు తెలుగు కనుక. విశాఖపట్నం కంటే మంచి ప్లేస్ లేదు కదా సార్ " అతని పరిశీలనకి ఆశ్చర్యం వేసింది. మారు వేషంలో డిటెక్టివ్ కావచ్చు.

రాత్రి పూట టేపు, భూతద్దం , టూల్స్ , డార్క్ లాంటర్న్ తో మారువేషంలో తిరుగుతాడేమో.

శవాల మీద బెత్తం తో కొడితే తట్లు తేల్తాయా కోనన్ డొయెల్ సరిగా చెప్పలేదు అని అడుగుదామనుకున్నా.

లక్ష్మి అంటోంది " మొన్న డస్ట్ బిన్ ఖాళీ చేస్తూ విమానం టికెట్లు చూశావుగా?"

తమాయించుకోడం కొంచెం కష్టమయింది.

             దారిలో వెళ్తుంటే, అమ్మ గారిని చూస్తుంటే ఒక సినిమా నటిలా ఉందనిపిస్తోందని , పేరు ( సూర్యకాంతం? ఛాయాదేవి? కల్పనారాయ్? టున్ టున్ ?) గుర్తు రాని తన మతిమరుపును క్షమించమని చెప్పాడు. అయ్యగారి దర్జా ,ఠీవి చూస్తే గొప్ప ఉద్యోగస్తులో, పెద్ద వ్యాపారస్తులో అయి ఉంటారని గట్టిగా చెప్పేశాడు. దొంగ పొగడ్తలే కాకుండా అప్పుడప్పుడు వాస్తవాలు కూడా మాట్లాడ్తాడని చిన్న సదభిప్రాయం ఏర్పడింది. తను మామూలుగా ఎవరి దగ్గర టిప్స్ ఆశించడట. అమ్మ గారిని చూస్తుంటే ఏసుక్రీస్తు చెప్పినట్లు కుడిచేతితో చేసిన దానం ఎడమ చేతికి తెలియనివ్వని రకం అని తెలిసి పోయింది కనుక , రూమ్ బాయ్ టిప్ ,క్యాబ్ డ్రైవర్ టిప్ విడివిడిగా ఎంతిచ్చినా తీసుకుంటానన్నాడు. నా భార్య మనసులో మెదిలిన అమౌంట్ , టెలిపతీ ద్వారా వాడికీ , నాకూ తెలిసింది అనటానికి తార్కాణాలు వాడి ముఖంలో సంతృప్తితో కూడిన కనీ కనిపించని చిరునవ్వు , నాకు మాత్రమే వినపడిన నా పళ్ళ పటపట శబ్దం.

          చౌహాన్ గారు స్పురద్రూపి. దబ్బపండు ఛాయ. స్వచ్ఛమైన మందహాసమే ఆభరణం. పక్కన ఆయన భార్య మిసమిసలాడే పాలరాతి తెలుపు. చేతులెత్తి దణ్ణం పెట్టాలనిపించే పవిత్రమైన అందం. మన మనసులోకి చొరబడి , నలుమూలలా పరికించి చూస్తున్నట్లు నిశితమైన చూపు.

నాకెందుకో లోకంలో పరుల కష్టాలు తమవిగా భావించి , కడదేర్చే మార్గాలు వెతికేవాళ్ళనెవరిని చూసినా గౌరవభావంతో పాటు, వాళ్ళ ముఖంలో నిర్మలత్వం మాటున చిన్న విషాదవీచిక గోచరిస్తుంది.
రాముడు, బుద్ధుడు , జీసస్, పాత్రలు ధరించే నటులు తమ ముఖంలో సున్నితమైన ,అంతర్లీనమయిన దుఃఖఛ్ఛాయలను, మార్దవమైన ఆర్ద్రతను మేళవిస్తే బాగుంటుంది అనిపిస్తుంది.

        నాకు ఆవిడ ముఖంలో కలుపుగోలు చిరునవ్వు , ఆప్యాయత తో పాటు అవన్నీ కనిపించాయి. షాప్ లో అడుగు పెట్టగానే కనిపిస్తోంది , భార్యాభర్త సోఫాలో కూర్చుని, కొడుకు సోఫా వెనక ఇద్దరి మధ్య నిల్చొని , దిగిన నిలువెత్తు ఫోటో. ఆయన తన కొడుకు గురించి ఇన్నాళ్ళు చెప్పింది చాలా తక్కువ అనిపించింది.

             కొద్దిపాటి, తేలికపాటి పరిచయమే అయినావాళ్ళ ఆదరణ , మర్యాద అపురూపంగా అనిపించాయి.
" బాబు ఆడిటర్ ని వెంటబెట్టుకొని బేంక్ లోన్ పనిమీద వెళ్ళాడు. వచ్చేస్తారు. మీకు ఈ లోపల షాప్ చూపిస్తా"
అంది ఆవిడ. చూశారా, నే చెప్పాగా అని మా ఆవిడ కళ్ళతో మాట్లాడింది. షాపంతా కలియతిరిగాక , వారి నిరాడంబరతకు ఐశ్వర్యానికి మధ్య వ్యత్యాసం మా ఆవిడ మతి పోగొట్టింది.

                       ఆయన మాత్రం మాతోనే కూర్చున్నా ,తను షాప్ అజమాయిషీ చేస్తూనే ఆతిథ్యం అందించింది. మేము బయల్దేరుతామంటే భోజనం ఇక్కడే అని బలవంతం చేశారు. భోజనానికి రమ్మని కొడుక్కి ఫోన్ చేస్తే ,బిజినెస్ లంచ్ ఉందని మమ్మల్ని కానియ్యమని చెప్పాడతను. dessert కి తప్పక రమ్మని చెప్పమన్నారు చౌహాన్ గారు. "వాడుంటే   , పోనీలే అమ్మా ఒక స్వీట్ , సిగార్ వదిలెయ్ అంటాడని వీరి ఆశ " అని నవ్వింది. కాలం ఎలా గడిచిందో తెలీకుండానే , సాయంత్రం వడాపావ్, చాయ్ వచ్చేసాయి. బాబు రాలేదు.
       బయలుదేరవలసిన సమయం వచ్చింది. మేము నిర్ఘాంత పోయేలా లక్ష్మికి పట్టుచీర , నాకు చిన్న వెండికంచం ఇచ్చారు . వచ్చే నెలలో పెళ్లి అనుకుంటున్నామని , కుటుంబం అందరం తప్పక రావాలనీ ఆయన పదేపదే చెప్పారు. ఆవిడ నా విజిటింగ్ కార్డ్ తీసుకొని భద్రపర్చింది. ఎంతో ఆత్మీయుల్లాగా కారు దాకా వచ్చి వీడ్కోలు పలికారు. యాదృచ్ఛికమే అయినా అద్భుతమయిన ఈ స్నేహాన్ని ప్రాణపదంగా జీవితాంతం కాపాడుకోవాలని దృఢంగా నిశ్చయించుకున్నాం.

          కారు ప్రయాణంలో అంతా , ఇన్ని రోజులు చూసిన ప్రదేశాలు, తీసుకున్న ఫోటోలు , ఆ ఫ్యామిలీ గురించీ , మాట్లాడుకున్నాం. తను హిందీ లో మాట్లాడగలదు కనుక ఈ పరిచయం ఏర్పడింది అని ప్రకాశముగా ప్రకటించింది. ఇద్దరు మనుషులు రెండు భాషలను హత్య చేస్తే స్నేహం పుడుతుంది గదా అని ఙనాంతికంగా చింతించాను.

            సామాన్లు రూమ్ లో పెట్టిన డ్రైవర్ కమ్ రూమ్ బాయ్ కి టిప్పు డబ్బులిస్తూ " ఏమిటో సునీల్. వాళ్ళ అబ్బాయి వీళ్ళిద్దరి లాగా కాదనుకుంటా. కొంచెం గర్వం నిర్లక్ష్యం. కలవడానికి వీలు లేకుండా సాకుల
మాటున దాక్కున్నాడు . పెళ్లికి తప్పకుండా వచ్చి చూడాల్సిందే. " అంది.

                 వాడి ముఖంలో సెకనులో చాలా రంగులు మారాయి. దిగ్భ్రాంతి , కోపం, దుఃఖం వరసగా కనిపించాయి. ఆశ్చర్యంగా చెప్పాడు " అదేంటి మేడం. అమ్మగారు చెప్ప లేదా. బాబు కోరుకున్న అమ్మాయి , తనను కాదని మరొకరిని ప్రేమించి పెళ్ళాడింది. బాధతో అవమానం తో ఆత్మహత్య చేసుకున్నాడు. రోజూ తండ్రీకొడుకులు బీచ్ లో మార్నింగ్ వాక్ లో కలిసే చోట తండ్రి ఎదురుగానే సముద్రం లో దూకాడు. శవం సాయంత్రం దొరికింది. పెద్దాయన షాక్ లోకి వెళ్ళి పోయాడు. అన్ని విషయాలలో మామూలుగానే ఉన్నా , కొడుకు చచ్చిన సంగతి నమ్మడు. రోజూ ఉదయం బీచ్లో , తర్వాత ఇంటి దగ్గర , బాబు ఉన్నట్లే ఊహించుకుంటాడు. డాక్టర్లు ఎన్ని రోజులో చెప్పక పోయినా, కొద్ది రోజుల్లో మనుషులలో. వస్తాడని చెప్పారు. వచ్చేదాకా, ఆ తర్వాత కూడా జాగ్రత్త గా చూడాలి."

             " Dissociative amnesia . ఎన్ని రోజులో తెలియదు. జాగ్రత్తగా చూడాలి " నాలో నేను మాట్లాడుకుంటున్నానని తెలిసేలోపే , గుండెలు కదిలిపొయ్యేలా , కరిగి పొయ్యేలా లక్ష్మి వెక్కివెక్కి   ఏడుపు. తను దుఃఖం లోకి వెళితే ,తనే వెనక్కి రావాలి తప్పితే నేను చెయ్యగలిగింది ఏమీ లేదన్నది అనుభవం.
యాంత్రికంగా సామాన్లు సర్దటం మొదలుపెట్టాను. ఏడుపుతో కూడిన శ్మశాననిశ్శబ్దంలో శ్మశానవైరాగ్యం తో వచ్చిన మౌనరోదన నాది. కుమిలి పోయాను. కనపడని , కనపడనివ్వని కన్నీళ్ళను కనురెప్పల వెనుకే ఆపి కడుపులోకి. దిగమింగి దాచాను.

           " ఎంత బాధండీ అది. ఆయనకెందుకొచ్చింది.అంత మంచి మనిషి . తట్టుకోలేక పోతున్నాను. వెంకటరమణా మరెవరికయినా ఈ ప్రారబ్ధం ఉందా స్వామీ ఈ లోకం లో " మాట్లాడుతోంది తను.

" లక్ష్మీ! ఆవిడ గతేంటి. సంగతేంటి.తన బాధను అణుచుకొని , అతని బాధను తనదిగా చేస్కొని, ఏడవటానికి కూడా అవకాశం లేని పరిస్థితి.రోజులో ఎప్పుడయినా ఒక గంట సమయం ఒంటరిగా దొరికితే ఆవిడ ఎలా ఉంటుందో ఊహించు . నాకు అందడంలేదు." తడబడుతూనే మాట్లాడాను.

తిరుగు ప్రయాణంమంతా నిరాసక్తంగా నిర్వేదంగా-----
విమానం దిగి ఇంటికి ఎలా చేరామో, ఆఫీస్ కి ఎప్పుడెళ్ళానో , ఏంచేశానో తెలియని నిర్లిప్తత. అమ్మ ఏమయింది ఎందుకిలా ఉన్నారు అంటుంటే తనని అడగమని వచ్చేశా. భార్యాభర్తల ఇమేజెస్ రకరకాల భంగిమలలో , భావనలలో,భావాలలో, కళ్ళముందు స్లైడ్ షో.

సాయంత్రం అలసటతో ఇంటికి చేరిన నాకు అమ్మ కాఫీ తెచ్చింది. " రోజూ పాప పుస్తకాలు, బట్టలు సర్ది దానికి ఏదో ఒక ఫలహారం తయారు చేసి, ఎదురు చూస్తూ గుమ్మంలో కూర్చునేది.

ఈరోజు తటాలున లేచి ఎటో వెళ్ళింది. దానికేమయిందో అర్థం కాదు.నాకేమిటి నాయనా ఈ బాధ!!."

              నాకు తెలుసు తనెక్కడుంటుందో. నిస్సత్తువగా లేచి కారు తీసి బయల్దేరాను .బస్టాప్ లో
సిమెంట్ బెంచీ మీద కూర్చొని ఉంది. " నువ్విటు, పాప అటు అయ్యారు.అది బస్సు దిగి వచ్చేసింది "
కారు డోర్ తెరిచి కూర్చుంది. " రేపటి నించి దాన్ని ఇక్కడే రిసీవ్ చేసుకొని తెస్తా " ఆలోచనగా చెప్పింది.

           నెలక్రితం ఒక రోజు, కాలేజీకి బయల్దేరిన పాపకు , రాత్రి ఏడు గంటలకి టైలర్ వస్తాడని చెప్పింది .
సాయంత్రం పాప ఫ్రెండ్స్ ఫోన్ చేస్తే వెంటనే వెళ్ళాం.

" ఉదయం నించి ఎక్సైటెడ్ గానే ఉంది ఆంటీ . బస్సు దిగి , ముందరి నించి రోడ్ దాటబోయింది . డ్రైవర్ చూడకుండా లాగించాడు."

            రక్తం ముద్దలా పాప , చుట్టూతా జనం , ట్రాఫిక్ పోలీసులు , 108 వాహనం. పాపను కొన్ని గంటల తర్వాత అప్పచెప్పారు. నేను , అమ్మ , దాని ఫ్రెండ్స్ దుఃఖం తో పొర్లి పొర్లి ఏడ్చాము. లక్ష్మి కంట్లో నీటి చుక్క , నోట్లో మాట లేవు. ఆ రోజు నుంచి తనకొక మార్పు లేని దినచర్య ఏర్పడింది. ఈ రోజే తొలి కదలిక.

కర్కశంగా నిరాశతో నిర్దయగా వలువలు లేకుండా గుడిమెట్ల మీద పసిగుడ్డుని వదిలారు.

Sometimes things don’t go, after all,

కొన్ని సార్లు

కొన్ని సార్లు పరిస్థితులు అధ్వాన్నం కంటే అధోగతికి దిగజారవు.
కొన్ని వర్షాలు పత్తిమొక్క వర్షాభావం అధిగమించి
పచ్చదనం పల్లవిస్తుంది.రైతు పంట పండుతుంది.

కొన్ని సార్లు మనిషి ఉన్నత లక్ష్యానికి గురిపెడ్తాడు

సాధిస్తాడు
సర్వం సవ్యంగా పరిణమిస్తుంది.

కొన్ని సార్లు మానవులు యుద్ధవిరమణ చేస్తారు.
నీతిమంతుడిని ఎన్నుకొని , అపరిచితులను కూడా ఉద్ధరించాలని శ్రద్ధ వహిస్తారు.
కొంతమంది ఏ ఔన్నత్యం కోసం జనించారో దానినే అందుకుంటారు.

కొన్ని సార్లు మన మంచి ఉద్దేశ్యాలు తప్పు దారి పట్టవు.
మనం ఆచరించవలసిందే నెరవేరుస్తాం

కొన్ని సార్లు భానుడు , కరుడుకట్టి ఘనీభవించినట్లు
కనబడే విషాద క్షేత్రాన్ని కరిగిస్తాడు.మరిపిస్తాడు.
మీకూ అదే జరగాలి.

A Blade of Grass

You ask for a poem.
I offer you a blade of grass.
You say it is not good enough.
You ask for a poem.

I say this blade of grass will do.
It has dressed itself in frost,
It is more immediate
Than any image of my making.

It is a blade of grass and grass

నువ్వు గేయం రాయమని అర్థించావు.
నేనొక గడ్డిపరక సమర్పించాను
నువ్వది సరికాదని సరిపోదని అన్నావు.
నువ్వు కవితే కావాలంటావు.

ఈ గడ్డి పరక సరిగా అమరింది
తను తుషార బిందు వస్త్రం తో అలంకరించుకుంది
నేను ఆవిష్కరించగల ఏ దృశ్యభావన కన్నా
ఎక్కువ మక్కువయినది సన్నిహితమయినది   అన్నాను.

నువ్వు మళ్ళీ అది గేయం కాదు అంటావు.
అది గడ్డి పరక.
గడ్డి పరక నాకేమాత్రం తగదంటావు.
నేను గడ్డి పరక నే సమర్పిస్తాను.

నువ్వు అలిగి ఆగ్రహించావు.
"గరిక సమర్పణం అత్యంత సులభం .
ఇది అసంబద్ధం.
ఎవరయినా గడ్డి పరక అర్పించగలరు."అంటావు.

నువ్వు మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ కవిత కోరుతున్నావు.
అందుకు పోను పోను, రానురాను
గరిక ఇవ్వడం ఎంత కష్టతరమో వర్ణిస్తూ
నీకోసం విషాదగీతం రచించాను.

నీ పై వయోభారం పడేకొద్ది
గడ్డిపరకని అంగీకరించడం

సింధువు ప్రథమ బిందువు
అంకురించిన గర్భస్థ శిశువు
భూమిగా మారిన మట్టి రేణువు.
వెదురు పొద లో గాలి రవళించిన వేణువు.
జలదం చిలికిన తొలి చినుకు.
మొలకెత్తిన మొదటి బీజం
చిగురేసిన లేలేత పిలక
రవి తొలి అరుణ కిరణం
అమీరన్నా గరీబన్నా ఎరుగని అమీబా
ఒంటరితనం అనుభవించాయా?
తుంటరితనం అభినయించాయా?

కాదే

ఏకత్వం సహించి నేతృత్వం వహించి
దాతృత్వం మిత్రత్వం నేర్పించి
స్థితి, గతి మార్చి ప్రగతికిపయనించాయి.

కార్తీకపు మునిమాపు జ్వాలాదీపం వెలుగు
కాశ్మీరపు కుంకుమపువ్వు చురుకు మెరుగు
సాగరపు తరగలపై వెండిజలతారు వెన్నెల నురుగు.
పచ్చికబయళ్ళ జాలువారు బంగారపు నీరెండ సొబగు.
కాంతారపు రాజసపు మెరుపు "కేసరి " వేట వేళ మెత్తటిఅడుగు.
పచ్చని విచ్చిన గరికపువ్వు జిలుగు
గలగల పారే సెలయేరు జలజల దూకే జలపాతం ఉరుకుపరుగు.
పీతాంబరం తళుకు
అందమంటే తమదేనని అహంకరించి హుంకరించాయా
అంతరించాయా?

వినయంతో అందరు మెచ్చి
ఆనందం పంచి ఆహ్లాదం పెంచి
విరించి గర్వించగ
జన్మకర్థం పరమార్థం వివరించి తరించాయి.

అపరాజిత గారు ఈమధ్యనంతా అన్యమనస్కంగా ఉంటున్నారు . మిన్ను విరిగి వెన్ను మీద పడినా చలించని ఆవిడ , కొద్ది రోజులుగా జరుగుతున్న తనకు నచ్చని , మింగుడు పడకుండా గొంతుకు అడ్డం పడుతున్న , వరుస సంఘటనలతో కలత చెందుతున్నారు. సరిదిద్దడానికి స్వయంగా రంగంలోకి దిగాలేమో అన్న ఆలోచన మనసులో మెదుల్తోంది.

              ఆవిడ సహజంగా తన మృదువైన దృఢత్వం తో సొంత నిర్ణయాలని ఆచరణలో పెట్టే వ్యక్తి.   అందుకే తండ్రి కష్టపడి పైకి వస్తూ , తన సామ్రాజ్యం విస్తరించడానికి సరైన సైన్యాధ్యక్షుడిగా ఎంపిక చేసిన వాళ్ళలో , బీదతనం అనర్హతే అయినా తెలివితేటలు సమతూకం చేస్తాయని ఒకరిని వరించారు. తండ్రి రాజుగా, తను మంత్రిగా ఆయనను విజయవంతంగా నడిపించారు. భర్త అధ్భుతమయిన సక్సెస్ లో తన పాత్ర , తన తండ్రి పాత్ర ఆయన ఎప్పటికీ మరిచిపోకుండా ఆవిడ చూసుకుంటూనే ఉంటారు. కానీ ఈనాటికీ శ్రీవారిలో మంచితనం అనే బలహీనతతో ఆవిడ సర్దుకొనిపోక తప్పటంలేదు.

              భర్త పెళ్ళైన కొత్తలో ముద్దుగా "అప్పూ" అని పిలిస్తే వెంటనే సున్నితంగా , పేరు పెద్దది అనిపిస్తే "అజిత" అని పిలవమని నిర్దేశించారు. ఆవిడకి ఓటమి అన్నా , కూటమి అన్నా సమానమయిన అయిష్టం. స్వంతమయిన, స్వతంత్రమయిన గెలుపంటే ఇష్టం. అందుకే తన పేరన్నా , తన ముద్దు పేరన్నా తనంత ఇష్టం. ప్రత్యర్థులు లేని విజయాన్ని ఆవిడ ఎక్కువగా ఆస్వాదిస్తారు , ఎన్నికలలో ఏకగ్రీవాల్లా.

                   శ్రీవారి ఆరోగ్యం కొంచెం ఒడుదుడుకులకు లోనవడంతో, విదేశాలలో చదివి వచ్చిన చిన్న బాబు గారు తండ్రి స్థానాన్ని క్రమేపీ భర్తీచేశారు . వారు సారధ్యం వహించడం ప్రారంభించిన తర్వాత చేపట్టిన మార్పుల్లో " హ్యుమన్ టచ్ మిస్సింగ్ " , " టూ ప్రాక్టికల్ " లాంటి మాటలు వినిపించినా , లాభదాయకత పెరగడం తండ్రి కన్నా అమ్మ గారికి పుత్రోత్సాహం కలిగించింది.     " When the competition is fierce you must be fiercer " అన్నది అబ్బాయిగారి motto . కానీ కుమారుడిది అతిమిత్రత్వ స్వభావమేమో అని madam చిన్న ఆందోళన కలిగి ఉన్నారు. '"సెలెక్ట్ ఫ్యూ" తప్ప మిగిలిన వారినందరినీ గుండెగుమ్మం దగ్గరే ఆపాలి , అంతకుమించి ముందడుగు వేసేందుకు అవకాశం ఇవ్వకూడదని వారి దృఢాభిప్రాయం.
మనసు పుష్పకవిమానం కాదు కదా అందరినీ ప్రేమించి , ఆహ్వానించి , చోటివ్వటానికి .

                           ప్రస్తుతానికొస్తే , అప్పుడప్పుడు దగ్గరలో ఉన్న ఫాంహౌస్ కి ఫ్రెండ్స్ తో వెళ్ళి సరదాగా గడపటం అలవాటు. కొద్ది రోజుల క్రితం అక్కడ పేకాడుతుండగా గోడ మీది బల్లి రెక్కలపురుగును మింగడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తోంది. ఒకసారి వెలుతురు లోంచి,మరోసారి నీడలోంచి , కనబడుతూ, నక్కుతూ , పొంచి చూస్తూ guerilla విద్యలన్నీ ప్రదర్శిస్తూ దాడి చేస్తోంది.   పురుగు అతీంద్రియ శక్తి   కలిగి ఉన్నట్లు , తద్వారా శత్రువు ఉనికిని పసికట్టగలిగినట్లూ , బల్లి దగ్గరకి వచ్చాక ఎగిరి మరొక చోట వాలుతూ పదేపదే తప్పించుకుంటోంది. బల్లి ఆఖరి ప్రయత్నంగా వేగం పెంచి జరజర పాకుతూ వెళ్ళింది. పురుగు తప్పుకోడంతో బల్లి కిందపడింది. అమ్మ గారికి ఇది చాలా అన్యాయంగా అనిపించింది. దేవుడు బల్లిని సృష్టించినప్పుడే పురుగులనూ ఆహారంగా సృష్టించాడు. నియమాలకు వ్యతిరేకంగా పురుగు ప్రవర్తన.....సర్వెంట్ ని పిలిచి , హిట్ కొట్టించి పురుగును చంపించినా ఏమూలో అసంతృప్తి. బల్లిని సింబాలిక్ గా ఒక వర్గానికి   ప్రతినిధిగా ఆవిడ భావించారు. ఆ రోజు మూడ్ బాగోలేక రాత్రికి అక్కడే పడుకుండిపోయారు.

మర్నాడు ఉదయాన్నే కుక్కని వాక్ చేయిస్తున్న సర్వెంట్ ని చూస్తూ బ్రేక్ ఫాస్ట్ చేస్తున్నారు. సూర్యుడు ఎంతో వినయంగా చెట్ల ఆకులమాటు నుంచి పడీపడని వెచ్చని ఎండతో D విటమిన్ సర్వ్ చేస్తున్నాడు. కోయిల విధేయతతో ఆగి ఆగి పాడుతూ ఆహ్లాదాన్ని అందిస్తోంది. గాలి ఎంతో అణకువగా , మెల్లగా వీస్తూ ప్రశాంతతకు భంగం కలగకుండా చూసుకుంటోంది. కుక్క యజమాని గారి దర్జాకి , దర్పానికి అనుగుణంగా ఠీవిగా

( గ్రామ) సింహంలా నడుస్తోంది. కొద్దిగా మనసు కుదుట పడుతున్న వేళ జరిగింది మరో సంఘటన. విశ్వాసం కలిగిన కుక్క , సర్వెంట్ క్వార్టర్స్ లో ఉండకుండా , ఆవరణమంతా తనదిలా తిరుగుతున్న తోటమాలి కొడుకు మీదికి బాధ్యతగా ఉరికింది. గొలుసు తో ఉంది కనుక   వాడిని అందుకోలేక సతమతమవుతోంది. తప్పు చేస్తున్న భయం లేకుండా , పెద్ద కుక్క అన్న భయం లేకుండా కర్ర తీసుకొని ఆ వెధవ ఎదురు తిరిగాడు. కుక్క తోక ముడిచి సర్వెంట్ వెనక దాగుంది. పగలబడి నవ్వుతున్న వాళ్ళిద్దరినీ చూస్తుంటే ముంచుకొచ్చిన కోపం ఇంకా మనసులో ఒక మూల వేధిస్తోంది.

                                                      ఈ మధ్యనే బాబు స్నేహితుడు Mr.నరేష్ ( I.P.S) బదిలీ మీద వచ్చిన సందర్భంగా ఇచ్చిన

పార్టీకి అందరినీ పిలిచారు. అబ్బాయిలందరూ మందు లోకి దిగిపోయేరు. వాళ్ళ లోకం వారిది,వేరేది. అబ్బాయిగారు " ఫీల్ ఫ్రీ. నో ఇన్హిబిషన్స్. ఎవరి నాన్న ఇటు వైపు రారు. ఎంజాయ్ " అని ప్రోత్సహిస్తున్నారు.

అన్ని సంస్థల ఉద్యోగులు రావడంతో కుటుంబాలు కోలాహలం చేస్తున్నాయి. కొద్దిసేపటికి అంతస్థుల అంతరాలబట్టి , తెలియకుండానే ఆడపిల్లలంతా రెండు groups గా చేరేరు . ఎవరి తాహతునుబట్టి వారు ప్రవర్తిస్తే , తారతమ్యాలు సరిగా పాటించబడే క్రమశిక్షణ వలన , madam గారికి అన్నీ సక్రమంగా జరుగుతున్న భద్రతాభావం ఇనుమడించి తృప్తి గా ఉంటుంది. అటువైపు నుంచి Gucci,chanel, DeBeers ఇటువైపు నుంచి ఆ బట్టల షాప్ ,ఈ నగల దుకాణం , రెండు వైపుల నుంచి careers,చదువుల చర్చలు , లోకాభిరామాయణం .

అమ్మగారికి గార్డెన్లో చక్కని గడ్డిపువ్వులన్నీ ఒకవైపు , మనోహరమయిన గులాబీ తోట మరోవైపు ఉన్నట్లు తోచింది. వారికి ఆ సమయంలో ఏ పువ్వు అందం దానిదే అన్న ఉదాత్తమైన ఆలోచన వచ్చి గంభీరంగా అభినందించుకున్నారు. అందం కన్నా హుందా , హోదా వారి దృష్టిలో విలువైనవి . గులాబీల మధ్య అబ్బాయిగారు వివాహం చేసుకోబోయే Miss. నీలిమ ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణ.

              Oxford suit లో చికాకు అంటే అయిష్టంగానే పట్టుబట్టలు కట్టించినా, ఏమీ పట్టనట్లు భర్త ఉద్యోగులతో కలసి విరగబడి నవ్వటం , ఆవిడకి చిరుద్యోగుల విరగబాటులా, చిన్న తిరుగుబాటులా కనిపించి , అనిపించి రుచించలేదు. పిలిపించి శ్రీవారిని మంత్రి గారు, కలెక్టర్, మిగతా రాజకీయ, పుర ప్రముఖుల సముఖంలో నిలవమని సున్నితంగా అభ్యర్థిస్తున్న శరీరభాషతో విశదంగా ఆదేశించారు.

                         వజ్రాల నగలు , దుస్తులూ మెరిసేలా మెజెస్టిక్ గా మహారాణి , " యువ " రాజమాతలా , వెలుతుర్లో కూర్చున్న అమ్మ దగ్గరికి నరేష్ వచ్చి కూర్చొని కబుర్లు చెప్తున్నాడు. వింటున్నాగానీ తను గమనిస్తున్న విషయాన్ని అతనూ చూస్తున్నాడని ఆవిడ పసికట్టేరు. కొడుకు గడ్డిపువ్వుల్లోకల్లా అందమయిన , ఆ మాట కొస్తే అందరికంటే అందమయిన అమ్మాయితో చాలా సరదాగా, చాలా చనువుగా ------ . సందడిలో ఆ విషయాన్ని మరెవ్వరూ అంతగా గుర్తించక పోవటం కొంత ఊరట.అందరికీ అంత నిశిత దృష్టి , సునిశిత పర్యవేక్షణా నైజం ఉండవుగదా!!

                       మిత్రులిద్దరూ మెల్లిగా నడుచుకుంటూ గార్డెన్లో చెట్ల మాటున కూర్చున్నారు. నడుస్తూ నడుస్తూ యాధృచ్చికంగా మేడం గారు కూడా కనబడకుండా వినబడేంత దూరంలో నిలబడ్డారు. నరేష్ " రాజుగాడు నాకూ జూనియరే, ఫ్రెండే. నువ్వు వర్రీ అవకు . మార్జిన్ మనీ అదీ నువ్వు ఎరేంజ్ చెయ్యి ముందు. నాది గ్యారంటీ " అనడం , బరువు దించుకున్నట్లు బాబు నవ్వటం ఆవిడకి రుచించలేదు. ఎవరికో , ఏదో సాయం అన్నదిమాత్రం అర్థం అయ్యింది. మనకు పనికిరాని ప్రతి సాయం అపాత్రదానమేనని , అపాత్రదానం అనర్థదాయకం అని ఆవిడ తండ్రి గారు ఏనాడో సూత్రీకరించారు.ఆవిడ ఆనాడే ఏకీభవించారు.

                         నాలుగు రోజుల తర్వాత సాయంత్రం వేళ ఎప్పటినుంచో తమ వద్ద నమ్మకంగా పని చేస్తున్న ఉద్యోగి   వచ్చేడు. పూర్వాశ్రమంలో స్నేహితుడవటం వల్ల అతను అయ్యగారితో అతిచనువుగా ఉండటం , శ్రీవారు అది సమంజసమే అని భావించటం అమ్మ గారికి నచ్చదు. చిన్నతనంలో నందుడి వద్ద రాజసంపదలు లేని బాల్యంలో మిత్రుడయిన కుచేలుడికి , తర్వాత కృష్ణుడు సకలమర్యాదలు చెయ్యటం విషయంలో దేవదేవుడి మీదే వారికి చిన్న కినుక. ద్రుపదుడు, ద్రోణుడికి చేసిన అన్యాయమేమిటో వారికి అర్థం కాదు , చేసుకోవలసిన అవసరం లేదు.

                          " సార్ తో మాట్లాడాలి, అమ్మా మీరు కూడా వినవలసిన ముచ్చట " అన్నాడతను. సారాంశం. వాళ్ళబ్బాయి, అతని ఫ్రెండ్ చిన్న బాబుకి జూనియర్స్. P.G. తర్వాత రీసెర్చ్ , కొంతకాలం ఉద్యోగాలూ   చేసి , దాచి పోగేసిన డబ్బుతో , స్వంత కంపెనీ ప్రారంభించి , కొత్త ప్రోడక్ట్ తయారీ లో ఉన్నారు. ఉద్యోగం మానేసి వ్యాపారం లో దిగటం మనలాంటి వాళ్ళ కి అచ్చిరాదని చెప్పినా వినలేదు. చేతిలో డబ్బు అయిపోవస్తుండడంతో ఎప్పటినుంచో ప్రయత్నం చేస్తున్న bank loan గురించి తిరుగుతున్నారు.

బాబు , వీరి విషయం లో ముందు నుంచి ఆసక్తి చూపిస్తూ ప్రోత్సహిస్తున్నారు. Bank loan విషయంలో వారు మార్జిన్ మనీ సమకూర్చటానికి ఒప్పుకుని , గ్యారంటార్ గా ఉండటానికి నరేష్ గారినిఒప్పించేరు. పార్టీ అయిన తర్వాతి రోజు ఈ తతంగం జరగాలి . దురదృష్టం . ఆ రోజు రాత్రి పార్టీ లో తాగి కారు నడుపుకుంటూ బయల్దేరారు. దారిలో మరో కార్ ని గుద్దేసేరు. కొడుక్కి కాళ్ళు , ఫ్రెండ్ కి భుజం విరిగేయి.

ఎదుటి కార్, కార్ డ్రైవర్ వెల్ బిల్ట్ కావడంతో మైనర్ డ్యామేజ్ తో తప్పించుకున్నారు. కొద్దిపాటి మైకంలో ఉండటంవల్ల , గాయాల వల్ల వీళ్ళిద్దరూ ఎదుటి కార్ లో వెనుక సీట్లో గుండెజబ్బు వ్యక్తి ఉన్నాడని, ఆ వ్యక్తిని పోలీసులు హాస్పిటల్ కి తరలించారని ఏమాత్రం గమనించలేకపోయేరు. నరేష్ గారు సమయానికి అక్కడికి చేరుకొని అన్ని చూసుకున్నారు.

రాజీ ప్రయత్నాలలో కార్లకి , గుండెకి , వీరిద్దరి చికిత్సకు ఖర్చంతా బాబే భరిస్తే , కేసు కాకుండా నరేష్ చూసేరు.మార్జిన్ మనీ డబ్బు ఇలా ఉపయోగపడింది. ఇకపై కంపెనీ నడిపే అవకాశాలు లేవు కనుక , బాబుని టేక్ఓవర్ చెయ్యమని హాస్పిటల్ నుంచే బ్రతిమిలాడి , కోరడంతో మరో మార్గం లేక వారు ఒప్పుకున్నారు. తండ్రిని మించిన దయామయులవడం వల్ల వారే వాటాలు వేసేరు. చిన్న బాబు కి 50% , వీరిద్దరికి చెరో 20% , నరేష్ గారికి 10%.

                    పిల్లలిద్దరికీ జీతం కూడా సంప్రదించి నిర్ణయించారు. వారి ఔదార్యానికి   ఉదాహరణ నరేష్ గారికి , వారికీ నెలవారీ ఏమీ వద్దనడమే . Capital , loan విషయం వారే చూసుకుంటారు. ఇన్నాళ్ళ తర్వాత ఈ రోజు మధ్యాహ్నం కొడుకు కడుపునిండా తిని , కంటినిండా నిద్రపోతుంటే ఈ వివరాలను చిన్న బాబు కంటే ముందు తను చెప్పి కృతజ్ఞత చెప్పుకోవాలని వచ్చేడు.

          "వారు మీ రక్తం సార్ "

                           రాత్రయింది. బాబు , నరేష్ రావడం , సర్వెంట్ ని పిలిచి నరేష్ కి కూడా భోజనం ఏర్పాట్లు చెయ్యమని , ప్రస్తుతానికి కావలసినవి పురమాయించి తోట లోనికి నడవడం చూసి అమ్మ గారు దూరం నించి వెంబడించేరు. నరేష్ వెనక్కి విలాసంగా వాలి , " SO ! ? " అన్నాడు. బాబు నవ్వుతూ " SO అంటే ఏముంది. 10% తో అగను. ఇల్లు కొనుక్కో. White నీది, black నాది " అన్నారు . " మరో విషయం బ్రో. అనూహ్య మీద నీ ఇంట్రెస్ట్ అమ్మ కూడా గమనించేరు. కంగారు అణచుకుంటున్నారని అనుకుంటున్నాను . వాట్స్ కుకింగ్ ? అన్నాడు నరేష్ .

                           " రేయ్ ! కోరికలు ఎన్నోవున్నా ఆశయం ఒకటే. క్రేవింగ్స్ ఎన్నోవున్నా ఆస్పిరేషన్, ఆంబిషన్ జనరల్ గా ఒకటే . అందాన్ని అక్కున చేర్చుకుంటాం. మనిషినీ కుటుంబాన్నీ నెత్తికెత్తుకోం. " అని బాబు జ్ఞానోపదేశం చేసేరు.
                         నరేష్ ముందు తన భావోద్వేగం బయట పడినందుకు తనను తాను మందలించుకుంటూ, రాజయోగా సాధన చెయ్యాలని నిశ్చయించేరు అమ్మగారు. గర్వంగా గాలిలో తేలిపోతూ, తొమ్మిదో మేఘం మీద తన గదికి చేరేరు.

                            ఫాంహౌస్ మేనేజర్ కి ఫోన్ చేసి కొత్త వాళ్ళని వెదకమని , దొరకగానే తోటమాలిని , కుక్కల్ని చూసే సర్వెంట్ ని లెక్కచూసి పంపించెయ్యమని చెప్పేసేరు.

                          ఉరుములు. మెరుపులు , సుడిగాలి , చీమలదండు తన పుట్టను అకస్మాత్తుగా చుట్టుముట్టినా ఏమీ కాదనీ, ఒకవేళ అనుకోనిది జరగబోయినా ఆపగలననీ తన స్వశక్తి మీద సంపూర్ణమయిన విశ్వాసం గల నాగరాణి   , వచ్చిన చిరు ఆపదలు తమంతటతామే తొలగిపోతే మణికాంతులతో ఎలా తేజరిల్లుతుందో ;

కుటుంబాన్ని చుట్టుముట్టిన దుమ్ములగొండ్ల గుంపును యువకిశోరాలు తరిమికొడ్తే సివంగి ఎలా ఉప్పొంగి పోతుందో ;
అలా ఆ సమయంలో ఆవిడ విలసిల్లారు.

                ఆ సమయంలో అపరాజిత గారికి నాన్న గారి మాటలు గుర్తొచ్చాయి. " అమ్మాయి . నేను చేసిన పూర్వజన్మ సుకృతం వలన ఉత్తమోత్తమ మానవ జన్మనొందితినని శాస్త్రం చదివినవారు చెప్పారు. నేను మధ్య వయసు వచ్చేటప్పటికి ఎదిగాను. నువ్వు తరవాతి తరం. నీ యవ్వనంనుంచి ఎదుగుతూ కొడుకు పుట్టేటప్పటికి గొప్పదానివయ్యావు. నా మనవడు 'బార్న్ విత్ డైమండ్ స్టడ్డెడ్ గోల్డెన్ స్పూన్ ' .శివుడి ఆజ్ఞ లేనిదే చీమైనా కుట్టదు.నువ్వు చేసే అన్ని పనులు దేవుడే చేయిస్తున్నాడు. తప్పొప్పులు ఆయనవే. కరణం కారణం కర్త అన్నీ ఆయనే మనం నిమిత్తమాత్రులం.

                     వీటి పరిణామక్రమం నేను అనుభవించాను. నీకవసరంలేదు .యువరాణిగా,మహారాణిగా,రాజమాతగా నీ జీవితం ప్రకాశిస్తూనే ఉంది. నువ్వు చేయవలసినదల్లా అహంకారం,అహంభావం దాచి ముసుగులు వెయ్యటమే. ముఖ్యంగా ఈ బీదాబిక్కి, డబ్బున్నవాడు , కోపంగా "నువ్వు" అంటే ఏకవచనం అని కొంపలు మునిగిపోయినట్లు పేట్రేగిపోతారు. మెత్తగా , మత్తెక్కించి గొంతు కోసినా అమ్మగారి మాటతీరు , హృదయం వెన్న అంటారు."

                               నాన్న చెపితే నాకు తెలిసిన జీవిత సత్యాలు బాబుకు పుట్టుకతో వచ్చాయని మేడమ్ పరవశించేరు. బాబు ఆలోచించి, " అన్ని " జాగ్రత్తలూ తీసుకుంటాడనీ తప్పటడుగులు , తప్పులు వెయ్యడని , చెయ్యడని ( ???)   సంతృప్తిగా వారు నిశ్చయించేరు,నిబ్బరించేరు.

                            అంతులేని ఆనందం, ప్రశాంతత అనుభవిస్తూ రోజూకన్నా భిన్నంగా ఏమయినా చెయ్యాలని నిర్ణయించేరు . వుడ్ హౌస్, ఐన్ రాండ్ పక్కన ఉంచేరు. భర్త ఎప్పటినుంచో సిఫార్సు చేస్తున్న '" బీదలపాట్లు" అన్న సినిమా చూడడమా లేక " les miserables " నవల చదవడమా అన్న మీమాంస లో ఆ పుస్తకం మీద   హోం థియేటర్ రిమోట్ ఉంచి గాఢ నిద్రలోనికి జారుకున్నారు.

కర్ణనయనాలు ఇటే పడేసి వీనుల,కనుల విందారగిస్తున్నారు.
తమ వంతుగా ప్రశంస ప్రోత్సాహం ఇస్తున్నారు.

పిల్లపిశాచంలా ఇల్లు పీకి పందిరేస్తుంటే చేష్టలుడిగిన ప్రేక్షకులం.

నీకందించే దీవెన వారికి జరలో రుజలో దివ్యౌషధం

తల్లి తండ్రుల పాత్ర నిచ్చి , ఆస్తులకన్నా ఆప్తులు కలకాలం ప్రధానమని
మా పెరుగుదల తో నీ ఎదుగుదల ఏకకాల విధానమని
అవగాహన పెంచావ్,మురిపించావ్, మైమరిపించావ్.

నియమితకాలంలో అందుకుంటూ

గడపలు దాటినా వీలైనంత కలసి గడపటం
నడక దారులు వేరైనా మేలైనంత నడత కలపటం.
