Park Hotel Group's Asia Pacific Expansion Plans

At the ITB Asia trade show held in Singapore this week, Park Hotel Group revealed details of an expansion programme rolling out across the Asia Pacific region.

With eight properties in its current portfolio, Park Hotel Group is aiming to open 10-12 new properties in the next three to five years. These include additional investments in Japan and China, plus interests extending to other prominent destinations in Southeast Asia, as well as Singapore.

In August this year, Park Hotel Group celebrated the latest addition to its portfolio with the grand opening of Park Hotel Clarke Quay, an iconic new landmark situated beside the Singapore River in the vibrant lifestyle district of Clarke Quay.

Designed by DP Architects as a celebration of Singapore's bygone Victorian era, the architecture of the 10-storey, 336-room Park Hotel Clarke Quay incorporates a distinctive red-tiled roof and spired towers in homage to Singapore's classic colonial style of the early 1800s and the romanticism of the Clarke Quay skyline.

Scheduled to open in May 2010, Park Hotel Group's flagship hotel, the Grand Park City Hall will also feature Knightsbridge, an 83,000-square foot luxury retail podium that is on course to becoming the luxury shopping destination of choice for discerning Singaporeans and overseas visitors. Named after London's most fashionable address, Knightsbridge promises timeless chic and classic style.

Integrated within an Sin$80 million makeover of the former Park Hotel Orchard and rebranded as a five-star hotel, Knightsbridge is in line with the group's vision for Grand Park Orchard to become synonymous with fashion and luxury. The dazzling exterior of the hotel includes a herringbone-designed glass façade and incorporates a dramatic eight-storey tall media wall. Retail units facing Orchard Road boast direct street entrances and frontages unseen in Singapore.

Elsewhere across the region, the Group's Hong Kong property - Park Hotel Hong Kong - has completed a major refurbishment, showcasing a brand new look. Conveniently located in the city's premier shopping district, the hotel has an adjoining shopping mall that is currently under refurbishment and scheduled to open early next year.

In Wuxi, Province Jiangsu, China, Park Hotel Group's Grand Park Wuxi is planning for a relaunch in the first quarter of 2010, after a refurbishment programme. The new Grand Park Wuxi will showcase an extensive range of banqueting and F&B facilities.

The group continues to view China as a key growth market and said it will continue its focus on the bourgeoning second-tier cities. In Japan, the group has been assessing acquisition targets since its first acquisition in Otaru, Hokkaido, last December.

Singapore Changi Airport the World's Favorite Airport

A survey of more than 14,500 frequent travelers, representing 160 countries around the world, has revealed Singapore Changi airport as the world's favorite airport, closely followed by Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok.

It's the second year running that these two airports have occupied the top two positions in this survey, although in 2008 the positions were reversed.

The poll was conducted by Priority Pass, an independent airport lounge programme.

Speaking about the results, Jonathan French, Head of Brand for Priority Pass said, “The travelers who took part in this survey took almost 250,000 flights between them over the last year (an average of 17 each), and that means they know a thing or two about airports. Opinions about both Changi and Chek Lap Kok are almost universally good throughout the world, and this accolade is well-deserved.”

In third place in the poll of favorite airports was Amsterdam Schiphol. Also in the top ten were Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Seoul Incheon. Things do not look as good for London Heathrow which “won” the poll for the world's worst airport for the second year running.

What more could you need!

Attractions to be opened in Singapore

The Singapore Tourism Board has announced details of some unique attractions that will be opening in the city-state next year.

Families will have the opportunity to visit the Universal Studios amusement park at Resorts World Sentosa to experience the world's first attraction based on the hit animated movie Madagascar.

There will be a state-of-the-art indoor boat ride featuring characters from the film and special effects.

Also set to open at Universal Studios in Singapore is the first Far Far Away Castle, which features in Shrek, another hit movie released by DreamWorks Animation.

Fashion devotees will be able to visit the city-state next year to explore a unique 'floating' Louis Vuitton store.

The flagship outlet will be based on an island at the Marina Bay Sands resort, which will also feature a five-star hotel, a casino and several restaurants.

Jason Ong, a spokesman for the Singapore Tourism Board, said: "With the wide range of new product offerings … [at] Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, we will firmly establish Singapore as one of the world's top travel destinations."

Changi Airport named 'Best Airport'

Singapore Changi Airport has received another five awards, including four 'Best Airport' titles, in the month of September 2009. These awards were for Changi's excellence in airport facilities and services.

Changi Airport has been voted the "Best Airport in the World" by readers of Business Traveller (UK edition), a leading global travel publication. Since it first won the title in 1988, Changi Airport has won the award for 22 consecutive years.

Closer to home, Changi Airport received the same affirmation from readers of Business Traveller's Asia-Pacific edition, who also chose Changi as the "Best Airport in the World" for the 18th consecutive year. In addition, Changi Airport was named "Best Airport Duty-Free in the World" by the magazine for the 12 th year running.

In another poll conducted by online travel magazine Smart Travel Asia (www.smarttravelasia.com), Changi Airport was ranked highest in the "Best Airport Worldwide" category out of more than 100 airports. According to Smart Travel Asia, Changi Airport's shopping facilities, greenery and colour, as well as the addition of Terminal 3 - have made Changi "a formidable competitor".

Separately, Changi Airport also received the "Best International Airport" accolade from Travel Weekly China, a major travel trade publication in China, as part of its 'China Travel and Meeting Industry Awards 2009'.

Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group, Mr Lee Seow Hiang said, "It is our top priority to continuously improve Changi's facilities and service standards to create an excellent Changi experience for travellers."

Mr Lee added, "Despite the increasingly competitive operating landscape, we are heartened that Changi Airport continues to win such airport awards every year.
