1) Always clear your cookies and cache before and after a bank transaction

2) Use a good anti virus software. It can be free like AVG or Avast. Alternatively get a paid one if you want the best and support for your software.

3) Use proper passwords. Don't use passwords that can be easily guessed such as 1234, abcd, qwerty, or your personal particulars that can be obtained easily by scammers and hackers.

4) Avoid doing your online banking in Internet cafes or public computers because you won't know are the PCs safe. Don't take unnecessary risks.

Singaporeans affected by frauds transactions on iPhone & iPad

Some Apple customers have reported on illegal transactions. The average among is around $30-$40. All the banks involved are investigating and exploring ways to tackle the problem.

Hopefully Apple implements the 3-Domain (3D) Secure protocols by Visa, MasterCard and Amex which sends out a OTP (One-time password) via SMS whenever the customer wants to make a purchase or transactions. This added layer of security will serve to prevent frauds from happening and at the same time notify the customer that someone may be using his/her credit card illegally.

Till the day Apple/iTunes adopts the technology, we will have to be more careful and remember to check your bank accounts for unauthorized transactions.

SMS Bank Alerts for ATM & Overseas Withdrawal

Finally the banks will be having SMS alerts for withdrawals. Most of the major banks will implement this strategy by 30 June, 2012. So the next time you receive a SMS withdrawal when you didn't do it, then you know you are a victim of card skimming (hopefully not).

Arrests made for DBS card skimming & Security Improved

The police had already caught the syndicate responsible for the card skimming in a matter of days. The ATM card skimming scheme had affected about 700 of DBS customers involving $1million stolen.

Below are the new security measures implemented:

1) customers who have not used their credit and/or debit cards outside singapore since Jul 1st last year will no longer be able to do cash withdrawals overseas until they enable the function.

2) those who want to activate the function will also receive a SMS alert notification confirming their request. This feature alone is very helpful IMHO.

UOB's Q2 net profit up for year 2011

Aug 12 (Reuters) - Singapore's United Overseas Bank , Singapore's third-largest lender, posted a 5.6 percent rise in second-quarter net profit on Friday, beating expectations on strong growth in fee and commission income as well as strong loan growth.

UOB earned S$636 million ($525 million) in the three months ended June, compared to S$602 million in the year-earlier period. Its results were above the average estimate of S$616 million in a Reuters poll of five analysts.
Singapore banks have seen strong loans growth over the past year, but this has not translated into significantly higher interest income as rates are hovering at historic lows.
DBS , Southeast Asia's biggest bank, last month posted a quarterly profit that was slightly above analyst forecasts, helped by strong loan growth as it rebounded from a loss a year ago when it took a goodwill charge.

Cash deposit to DBS, and difference between POSB and DBS banks

Saw this on yahoo, someone asking:

I'm buying something from a blog shop and I have to deposit money into the owner's DBS account, but I don't know how to. Do I just go to some random DBS ATM machine and transfer the money there? I don't have a bank account or credit card by the way!

And another question - what's the difference between POSB and DBS? Thanks! :)

My answer: Yes, you go to a DBS cash deposit machine , and put in the money, then enter the blog-shop owner DBS account number and the money will be transferred. Keep the receipt!

well DBS and POSB are now "under the same umbrella", meaning bank customers can transfer their money between the banks within the same working day (in-fact immediately) if you are transferring money.

However DBS and POSB bank codes and branches are different. And they have different credit cards issue too.

POSB started as a "people bank", then sort of "merge" with DBS into one bank, running two systems...and probably in the processing expanding their customer bases.

SingPost postman stealing credit cards

Should you be applying for a new credit card, or expecting a replacement credit card, do check the mail when you receive to verify that the mail had not been tempered with. It seem credit card theft can even start from the post office (although this is rare or seldom). So becareful lest you rack up big bills from your credit cards.

SINGAPORE: A former postman, who was the mastermind behind a plan to steal credit cards from two Singapore Post regional bases, was sentenced on Friday to 13 months' jail.
The mastermind, who resigned from SingPost last September, had made friends with his two accomplices.
Mohd Feerdauz and Mohd Hud stole seven letters containing credit cards.
Mohd Fauzee then made plans for the credit cards to be used to make purchases across the Causeway.
The trio had planned to re—sell the items they had bought and share the proceeds.
The court heard that five of the cards were used for transactions totalling more than S$17,000.
They were caught after a bank manager lodged a report about some unauthorised transactions made on credit cards that his customers did not receive.

Add Money into Paypal with DBS easily now

Good news if you are frequently using Paypal to pay for your online purchases.

DBS bank now allows you to add Paypal as a payee, and from there you can transfer whatever money from DBS to PayPal, vice-versa

Transfer time will still take 1-2 working days. And subject to prevailing currency rates. There will be no fees charged by Paypal (at least for now, let's hope it keeps it that way)

For more instruction, on adding Paypal into your account, and transferring monies to it, just login to your DBS via Internet Marketing, and follow the instructions step by step.
