09 August 1965, the day Singapore become independence. A historical moment for the nation and for the people. The day we stand together. The day we fight together. The day we work for each other. The day strive forward as a nation. And today we did it. Thanks to all our familes and friends.
This year 2011, we will hold our National Day Parade at Float@Marina Bay. At the event, you witness plenty of wonderful performances. My favorite and most touching moment is when we stand up and sing the national anthem and watching the national flag fly overhead us and saying the our national pledge. These moments just make me feel like standing up for our country and fight for whatever it may come. At the end of the event, there will be a wonderful fireworks. I thought the best act is at the finale when there are rapid and intense fireworks bursting up at the sky.

Every year, as the days grow nearer to National Day, I will yearn for Singapore patriotic songs. I still love the early days original Singapore National Songs. I still remember fondly of the songs, Stand Up For Singapore, Count On Me Singapore, We Are Singapore and One People, One Nation, One Singapore.

Those days as a kid, I enjoy seeing and listening to these songs been boardcast on television. Their lyrics had always inspire me to stand for my country and remind me of my Singapore roots. Fast forward to the 1998, the beautiful Home, sang by Kit Chan and written and compose by Dick Lee had somehow become a favorite national song. Many Singaporean living aboard will turn watery eyes after listening to this touching song during 09 August. In 2002, Stefanie Sun's We Will Get There is another commercial and patriotic sing. Both Home and We Will Get There's English and Mandarin version had attain a huge success.

Mint Museum of Toys

Attractions
This toy museum is an interesting place to visit. Nostaglic toys are housed in this five-storey shophouse. I would suggest you take a lift to the top floor and walk down from level to level. You could see the early-days Batman, Superman, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Tin Tin and many more toys.

Mint Museum of Toys is really a fun and educational museum. It is really an eye-opener for me! If you are an avid toy collector, the Mint Museum is must-visit for you.

At the ticket entrance, you could also view a collection of old toys. Oh yes! These toys are for sales! I have to confess that it is very tempting buy a few of these toys to my bedroom! Well, I suggest ... don't resist, just buy it :)
In fact, on the weekends, many local families have a family get-together in the airport! Whenever I touched down at Changi Airport from an oversea trip, I have a kind special feeling. Maybe it is a homely feeling? I suppose airport is a place with lots emotion floating around. There are smiles and laughters, cries and watery-eyes and beautiful hugs lingering around.
For transit passengers, you can have a stroll in Butterfly Garden, relax with a massage, having a dip in the rooftop swimming pool and shopping at the retail shops. Kong Meng San, established in 1921, is one of the largest monastery in Singapore. In the monastery, you can visit and worship at the Hall of Great Compassion, Hall of Precepts, Hall of Great Strength, Hall of Universal Brightness and Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas.

When I visit Kong Meng San, I find the monastery rather peaceful. I say my little prayers at the various Halls and enjoy the silence around me.

When visiting the monastery, one should wear clothes that covers shoulders and knees as well. Please talk softly and switch your mobile phone to silent mode.
This morning my mum told me that there is cake in the refrigerator and when I open take out the cake box ... I am thrilled to see the name, Jane's Cake Station, on the box! I had eaten this delicious cake before during my National Service days (all thanks to Roy who introduce me this wonderful cake!!!). And I had not eaten this cake again ... till this morning, as the place is located in Jalan Kayu, it is out of the way unless you drive.

Woww.. . it is probably around 10 years ago. But I had always miss Jane's Cake Station's chocolate cake. I still remember that day when I first bite into the chocolate cake, I am thrilled by the taste and texture. Back then, Jane's Cake become one of my favorite chocolate cake.

Another sinful cake that Jane's Cake has is the wonderful durian cake! The dangerously delicious durian cake will leave you craving for more serving! :)

Happy eating :)
Singapore Arts Festival 2011, 13 May - 05 June, will reconnect with us through the theme of I Want To Remember. Check out the various programmes of music, dance, theatre, film, workshop, exhibition, etc.. . I am quite excited with the up-coming event :) . I make myself available for the performances that I really fancy. Yeah !!

I thinking of catching the music performances of T'ang Quartet - Soul Capture, Inch Chua - Love and Accolades, Loops - Raga Jazz Liasion.

For dance acts, I am dreaming of Be-Being - Li and Sa, Yoshito Ohno - Kuu, T.H.E Dance Company - As It Fades.

Woww... . I am also interested in many other workshop's programmes! Now, I am trying hard to shortlist these programmes. These wonderful arts programmes are giving me a selection headaches! But I like this headache :)
Yeah, I like to stroll freely around the 28-hectare award-winning zoo. There are 315 number of species, 16% of which are threatened species, and 2530 number of specimens in the zoo.

From the minute I step into the zoo, I will experience walking through a tropical forest. As i walk along the path of Rainforest Walk, I could gaze through many flora and fauna, and listen to the chattering of cotton-top tamarins at the same time. Many children like Rainforest Kidzworld as it is a colorful wonderland. Many kids enjoy playing and splashing in the Play Water In fact, I quite enjoy looking at the children having an enjoyable time out there!

There are also Animal Encounter and Rides which you can experience, eg, riding the elephant and horses. There are also tram and boat rides for visitors. I like to walk through the zoo, viewing the animals, fauna, listen and smelling to different types of "animals' sounds and smell". I love these nature experiences.

I strongly recommend all visitors to experience at least one Show Times or Feeding Times. I find it very enjoyable and fun! How many times could we actually see a real live jaguar, cheetah, giraffe, white tiger, chimpanzee, etc, etc, having live feeding times??!!! You may want to go the Singapore Zoo website and check out their Show Times and Feeding Times, so you could go earlier and catch them.

Remember to wear light clothing, bring along water and camera!

Clarke Quay begin life, more than 150 years ago, as a fishing village. Later, it developed into a seaport to trade between the East and West.

Today, the waterfront godowns have become restaurants, pubs, cafe and entertainment spots. There are different types of cuisine for you to pick - Chinese, Italian, Mediterranean, etc. You could also easily pub/club hopping within Clarke Quay as there many different entertainment concept.

In the night, Clarke Quay is filled with so much vibrancy. Stroll along the shophouses, you can hear so much laughter and lively chattering. I like the bustle over here. Yeah, I also like to look at the historical shophouses. Hee.. .

By the way, you may also want to go across the river to Riverside Point for more eateries and nightspot exploration. There are as much vibe over there too!
Lee Kuan Yew and his dedicated team had made and lead Singapore from 1965 till now.

At this paragraph, I cannot help but thinking of the We Are Singapore lyrics which are so true from our independence till now:

"There was a time, when people think Singapore won't make it, but we did There was a time, when troubles seemed too much for us to take it, but we did

We built a nation, strong and free, reaching together for peace and harmony"

However, I feel there are so much to be written on Lee Kuan Yew. I cannot just simply summerise our Lee Kuan Yew in 700 words in my post. I feel I should not be rude and disrespect to our Lee Kuan Yew.

Hence, dear readers, I think it is more appropriate to let you have more in-depth informations through the below website and books:

- From Third World to First : The Singapore Story: 1965-2000

-The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew

-The Singapore Story: Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew, Vol. 2: From Third World to First, 1965-2000

- Conversations with Lee Kuan Yew: Citizen Singapore: How to Build a Nation (Giants of Asia series)

Singapore is very fortunate to have Lee Kuan Yew. I greatly admire Mr Lee's vision, intelligence and great personality. I find his speeches or interview-reply send clear statements and ideas to us and it is inspiring. And I always wonder how did Lee Kuan Yew often state the years of events happening during interview! How did he remember all those numbers so clearly?!

I have to say Lee Kuan Yew is my role model. Hereby, I would like to say, "Thank you, Sir.".

Singapore Botanic Gardens

Attractions

Singapore Botanic Gardens has a history of more 150 years, The Gardens was founded in 1859 by an Agri-Horticultural Society who planned the garden as a leisure garden and ornamental park. Fast-forward to today, the role of The Gardens has become a botanical instiution, tourist destination and regional park.

I think it is a wonderful idea to go the park over the weekend with your family or loved ones. The surrounding is so beautiful and relaxing. I like the smell and the surrounding greenery. It will be so romantic to stroll around and have an evening dinner in the park.

I would advise to wear light clothing and bring along umbrella and water if you wanted to explore the park. There are also many educational and interesting events at The Gardens. Check out their Calender of Events at their website and register for some tour!

Singapore Botanic Gardens

For location information, please check on their website as which is your preferred entrance.

Courtsey image & information from Singapore Botanic Gardens

Zouk

Night Scene

Zouk, launched in 1991, is the leading dance club in Singapore and Asia. Zouk has pushed the dance music culture into the next level in Singapore.

There are 4 different clubs within Zouk complex - Velvet Underground, Phuture, The Wine Bar and Zouk. All the 4 clubs are have its on favour and atmosphere. Zouk has its own resident DJs playing vibrant dance music to the clubbers. International guest DJs are regularly been invited to Zouk to display an array of leading music.

I suppose all Singapore's regular clubbers have been to Zouk at some stage of their clubbing lives! Haa.. . Many grown-up clubbers who are already in their 30s-40s now still miss the days of the retro Mambo Night!! While Singapore's forefathers came to settle in Singapore from many parts of Asia within the last 200 years, the cultures brought to Singapore by these different people are far more ancient.

This aspect of Singapore's history is the focus of the ACM. The Museum's collection therefore centres on the material cultures of the different groups originating from China, Southeast Asia, South Asia and West Asia.

ASIAN CIVILISATIONS MUSEUM

1 Empress Place +65 6332 2982

Courtsey image & information from Asian Civilisations Museum

Little India

Attractions

The first Indian settlers in Singapore arrived with Sir Stamford Raffles as assistants and soldiers back in 1819. In the late 19th century, many more Indian immigrants arrived to find work, be it as labourers to build roads or to take up key positions in the civil service.

Today, Little India is the focal point of Singapore's Indian community. Its spice-scented streets beckon you to a cornucopia of ethnic jewellery, jasmine garlands and silk saris. From the large Tekka Centre and Little India Arcade to the small provision shops, Little India is packed with interesting things to discover.
The passengers, all men, set up home around the south of the Singapore River which is known today as Telok Ayer. Chinatown’s local name - Niu Che Shui (Bullock Cart Water) arose from the fact each household at that time had to collect fresh water from the wells in Ann Siang Hill and Spring Street, using bullock-drawn carts.

Although much of the shops have become more touristy, one can still capture some old architecture from the rows of shophouses. During the Chinese New Year and Mid Autumn Festival season, many Singaporean will flock through the streets of Chinatown to buy the festive goodies. It is will be an experience to soak in the buzz and atmosphere there!

CHINATOWN South Bridge Road

Courtesy picture & information from Vist Singapore and Singapore Tourism Board and Chinatown

Youth Olympic Games

Event

Singapore will be hosting the Youth Olympic Games 2010 on 14 Aug-26 Aug 2010.
