A side dish accompaniment to every
Korean meal, kimchee is a fiery, spicy, fermented cabbage marinated in
red chili powder, garlic and ginger, akin to German sauerkraut, only
packed with a wallop of heat.
Celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Tyler Florence and Chuck Hughes have
become a few high-profile kimchee converts, teaching viewers how to
make quick-style, 'Westernized' versions on food TV. A few popular
applications include stuffing the condiment into barbecued, pork
sandwiches as an Asian-style slaw, a natural combination given that
kimchi and pork also make up the main ingredients in another authentic
Korean dish, kimchee stew.
The report credits the influence of food trucks for pushing Korean
cuisine into the North American culinary consciousness, which over the
last few years has been primarily fixated on other Asian influences --
Thai and Vietnamese flavors.
Entrepreneur Roy Choi's food truck Kogi BBQ, for instance, drew a cult
following in Los Angeles for its Korean Mexican tacos -- traditional,
homemade tortillas stuffed with Korean-style beef -- spawning copycat
trucks all over the country. Their popularity is also widely credited
for putting the spotlight on Korean flavors.
French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and his half-Korean wife Marja
have also been spreading the Korean culinary gospel this year in their
PBS series Kimchi Chronicles. Narrated by Aussie actor Hugh Jackman,
the series travels throughout South Korea highlighting the country's
regional specialities.
Meanwhile, the report also points out that since Koreans run most of
the sushi bars in the US, expect more fusion recipes as restaurateurs
gain the confidence to open eateries outside the confines of
Korea-towns. The Korean government, for instance, has embarked on an
aggressive tourism campaign and is reportedly footing the bill for an
upscale restaurant in New York to promote the national cuisine,
according to the consultants.
Seoul transplant Junk Sik likewise become the first gourmet,
'modernist' Korean restaurant to take up residence in New York when it
opened last month.
Other popular Korean dishes include kalbi, marinated short ribs,
bulgogi, marinated beef, and bibimbap, a bed of rice in a traditional
stone bowl, topped with seasoned vegetables, beef, and a fried egg,
bound together by kochujang, a red papper paste.
While American palates aren't quite ready for the paste to become to
become a mainstream grocery store find, the consultants predict,
"...wait until 2013."
Baum + Whiteman creates high profile restaurants around the world and
is the team behind Windows on the World, which sat atop the World
Trade Center.
Source:Yahoo.com.sg

The Hit List - Bars with Best Views in Singapore

Source: Yahoo.com.sg
These Singapore bars serve up more than just a good cocktail
Thanks to the recent additions of the Marina Bay Hotel and the
Singapore Flyer, Singapore bars with sky-scraping rooftop are
understandably all the rage these days. In fact, there are so many that we can
sometimes lose the meaning of any one measure. In this article, we'll
look at two different measures of debt and how they change the
landscape of the most indebted nations.

Debt Compared to Cash Coming In
One of the most popular, measures is debt as a percentage of GDP. This
tells you how likely it is that a nation is going to be able to pay
its bills. In this sense, GDP is income, so the more GDP you have, the
more debt you can service.
As far as measuring which nations are struggling, the debt to GDP is
an excellent measure. The public debt to GDP listing, compiled in the
CIA World Factbook, is reassuring in this sense. It's top 10, based on
2009-2010 data includes:
1. Zimbabwe 234.10%
2. Japan 197.50%
3. Saint Kitts and Nevis 185.00%
4. Greece 142.80%
5. Lebanon 133.80%
6. Jamaica 126.50%
7. Iceland 126.10%
8. Italy 119.10%
9. Singapore 105.80%
10. Barbados 102.10%
The United States is far down the list at number 32. The U.S. has the
highest GDP for a single nation, in other words, excluding the E.U..
The U.S. GDP hasn't come in under $1,400 billion since it broke that
level in 2007, so the debt situation of the U.S. isn't as bad in this
context, when compared to Japan. Japan has a GDP of around $4,300
billion and public debt over $10,000 billion.
The reason that Japan hasn't folded, is that over half of all Japanese
debt is held domestically. This gives Japan the advantage of
relatively friendly hands holding its IOUs. There is also another
economic advantage that economists see in the Japanese situation: most
of the interest payments on the debt, make citizens wealthier and more
likely to buy things domestically. This makes some sense, but the
theoretical domestic buying boom either hasn't yet hit its stride in
Japan, or the debt situation has grown beyond the point where this
beneficial side-effect is noticeable.
Japan's woes aside, the debt picture shifts quite noticeably when,
instead of looking at debt-to-GDP, we focus on external debt.
Measuring External Debt
External debt is a measure of the public and private debt, that is
owed to non-residents. This list, also compiled by the CIA, gives a
different top 10.
1. United States $13,980 billion
2. European Union $13,720 billion
3. United Kingdom $8,981 billion
4. Germany $4,713 billion
5. France $4,698 billion
6. Japan $2,441 billion
7. Ireland $2,253 billion
8. Norway $2,232 billion
9. Italy $2,223 billion
10. Spain $2,166 billion
Now, there is no reason to panic, despite the U.S. taking over the top
spot. The foreign holdings of treasuries total about $4,500 billion,
so this is not all public debt, by any stretch. Unlike domestically
held treasuries, however, the external ones are making interest for
non-citizens, making it less likely that the money will be put back
into the economy in any way. In the end, external debt just means
interest and principle payments that are going abroad and adding to
another country's GDP.
How Did We Get Here?
The U.S. has a lot of external debt, true. There are two ways of
looking at it, one is the debtor nation view, where the more external
debt a nation has, the more likely it is giving away its future, in
the form of interest payments to foreigners. The second way is the
investment destination view, where so many foreigners are looking to
lend and invest in the debts of U.S. citizens, companies and the
government, that the low interest loans can be used to build more
economic capacity, to produce more capital to pay off these cheap
loans.
The truth is that the U.S. is a bit in between the two scenarios. It's
strong GDP numbers make it one of the most attractive investments
compared to other struggling nations, but this huge foreign debt load
has passed the healthy level and is edging up to dangerous levels.
Just because other nations are willing to lend cheap, and the U.S. is
willing to spend, doesn't mean there aren't long term consequences.
The Bottom Line
Debt is a matter of perspective. The health of a nation is not so
different from the health of a business. If a nation is borrowing to
build infrastructure that will pay off in the future, then having a
lot isn't necessarily bad. If, however, the money is being poured into
areas with little or no return, then the burden on the economy to pay
those debts will eventually lead to more economic hardship in the
future. A fair assessment would involve tracking what each dollar of
private and public debt, goes towards purchasing. It's a major inconvenience," she said.
Australian businessman David Stewart, 52, en route from London,
decided to buy a new ticket through to Sydney with Emirates.
"It's absolute chaos," he said. "I've tried to be as loyal as I can to
Qantas. I could be cat-walking with the Heidi
Klums of the world," said the Bangalore-based Vishwanathan who stands
five feet nine inches (175cm) in her bare feet.
"But you've got to be at least 5'11" for any international fashion
house to come near you," she told AFP during the recent New Delhi
Fashion Week.
Compared to the West, career modelling is still in its infancy in
India, although it has made huge strides on the back of rapid economic
growth and the growing profile of Indian fashion designers.
Only a handful of Indian models have tasted success abroad, with the
likes of Lakshmi Menon and Ujjwala Raut modelling for Gucci and Yves
Saint-Laurent.
Menon walked for Jean Paul Gaultier shows in Paris and went on to
become the face of French luxury goods maker Hermes, replacing
Ukrainian Daria Werbowy.
The financial pay-off for those who do break out of the relatively
low-paid domestic scene can be enormous, and Raut is quite frank about
why she is no longer seen working the Indian fashion shows.
"They can't afford me," she told the Times of India in an interview last week.
Whispered allegations of racism have been made by some who tried and
failed overseas, but Vishwanathan believes the main barrier is the
natural body shape of Indian women.
"We are genetically more voluptuous and curvaceous," Vishwanathan
said, adjusting her tight mini-skirt as she sat down during a break in
her daily round of make-up sessions, hair-dos and fittings.
"Agencies abroad want girls who are really thin, almost skinny. It is
tough for us to fit into their requirements.
"I have been around on the Indian fashion scene for 10 years and would
have absolutely loved to make it big internationally. But even if you
have a little body to you, you're out of the race," she said.
Another factor is that Indian models tend to start their careers much
later than their Western counterparts, with parental pressure often
keeping them in college until their early 20s.
"In the international context it means they are already over the
hill," said Anjana Sharma, fashion director at IMG Reliance.
"Gisele Bundchen started modelling at 14, Kate Moss was discovered at
14 and by 16 she was a known face," she said.
Once frowned upon in conservative India as an immodest career choice,
modelling grew in popularity -- and acceptability -- in 1994, the year
former Indian models Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai took the Miss
Universe and Miss World titles respectively.
Both went on to successful and lucrative film careers, fuelling the
aspirations of millions along the way.
More recently, the launch of Vogue India in 2007 heralded the start of
a new fashion era and an overhaul of wardrobes of the nouveau riche.
"You name any international magazine and they are now in India," said
popular dress designer Samant Chauhan.
"It has opened the outside world to India. Models in India are now
more aware, assured and ambitious."
Rikee Chatterjee, a 24-year-old up-and-coming model said her family
fully supported her decision to take up modelling even before she
finished her college degree.
"They understood and backed my choice," she said. "A lot of parents
now are happy enough to see their kids in the limelight."
But there are some limits.
Indian models generally hesitate to do lingerie work, or other shows
that involve baring a lot of skin, and most lingerie ads in Indian
fashion magazines use foreign models.
"The question is not so much of modesty -- but of negative public
opinion," said Nonita Kalra, editor-in-chief of the Indian version of
Elle fashion magazine.
There are also complaints of a bias against darker-skinned models in
India where a light complexion is widely considered synonymous with
beauty and skin-lightening creams rack up annual sales of 500 million
dollars.
Top Indian model Dipannita Sharma ruffled feathers earlier this year
when she accused not just the fashion industry but the country as a
whole of being "obsessed" witn fairness.
"We will take another hundred years to completely get over it," she said
Source : Yahoo.com.sg

Deepavali – The Sweets, The Snacks and the Substantial

Makansutra – Mon, Oct 24, 2011 3:20 PM SGT
Text and images by Lorraine Koh @ Makansutra (yahoo.com.sg)
Nothing quite lights up one face, like good food. With Deepavali,
otherwise known as the Festival of Lights around the corner, our
Indian friends can look forward to precious moments with good food and
good company. "Deepavali is one of the most pleasant periods of the
year. There is a lot of celebration and the season where you can
expect prosperity!" says Chef Milind Sovani , head chef at The Song
of India. So what are the munchies involved in Deepavali? In essence,
there are the sweets, snacks and more substantial dishes.
The Sweets

The sweets include Jalebi, Bal Mithai and Bondi Laddu. Word of
caution: Indians really like their desserts super sweet, and this may
not sit well with those of us without a natural sweet tooth.
"In the Indian culture, Indian sweets symbolise either the spreading
of good news or an event of celebration such as Deepavali. The Hindus
believe that sweets are the best way of expressing happiness and
goodness," says Chef Sheikh Asabulla, head chef at Zaffron Kitchen.
"We have a saying 'make our friends' palette sweet' which translates
to sharing our joy with friends," adds Sovani.
The Snacks
Savoury snacks include different varieties of Murukku. This crunchy
snack is made from urad and rice flour with various flavourings like
chilli or cumin added. Although murukku is available throughout the
year, it's still a must-have item at the Indian household.
"Deepavali sweets and snacks are usually prepared a week in advance
and compared to other Indian snacks, they can be stored for a longer
period of time," says Sovani. The reason for this is because Deepavali
is typically celebrated over a period of five days. These snacks can
only be bought during Deepavali. He adds, "Due to the fast pace of
city life, few families make these sweets and savouries from scratch.
There are now many Indian companies who are able to courier these
snacks anywhere in the world, during Deepavali. I have to say, the
taste is also authentic."

The Substantial
"Deepavali is essentially the celebration of bringing light into the
world and the triumph of good over evil and therefore, Hindus come
together to have family meals after sunset as the coming together
symbolises the harmony present amongst loved ones. Thus, bringing
light and hope to everyone around during this festive period," says
Asabulla. There are many homecooked dishes Indian families can look
forward to like Mutton Mysore, Dum Chicken Briyani and Chicken
Chettinad.

The Indians also observe some religious rituals which involve food
during this occasion. Sovani says, "During Deepavali, the lady of the
house will get up early, bathe and offer her worship to the gods
before preparing food for the family." Asabulla adds that Hindus make
it a point to present offerings such as fresh fruit and home-made
desserts when they visit the temple during this festive season.
Asabulla, who hails from North India, remarks, "In India, it is
priority to spend Deepavali at home with loved ones and to enjoy a
hearty home-cooked meal with great music, laughter and happiness.
Although this is common for Singaporeans, the factor of spending more
and going out of the house to commemorate the festivities of Deepavali
is also observed."
From Makansutra and Makanation, we wish all our Hindu friends a happy Deepavali!

Singapore Food – from street to sleek

Makansutra – Sat, Oct 15, 2011 12:59 AM SGT
Text by Sheere Ng @ Makansutra
Singaporean food culture is rojak – not as in the Asian salad but its
urban meaning of "mixture". We add southeast Asian spices such as
garlic, ginger and chilli to the sedated chicken rice from the Hainan
Island; we combine noodles, a Chinese staple, with Malay spices and
rempah culinary techniques to create a repertoire of "mee" soup; and
we add minced mutton, egg and Indian spices to western baguette and
invented a new dish for the British, or John, and named it after them.
So Singaporean food is born out of cross-cultural exchanges, will this
fact make us more accepting towards attempts to alter it? What would
you say if the tourism authorities and relevant agencies here
Singapore Tourism Board (STB) wants to publicise Singapore food, but
in a different way from how we have always known them?
Last week, 21 chefs from 15 different cities were in town for the
Singapore International Culinary Exchange organised by Singapore
Tourism Board (STB), IE Singapore and SPRING Singapore. During the
event, the chefs came up with their own interpretation of
Singapore-inspired dishes, which they may feature in their own
restaurants.
Amongst them was Chef Alvin Leung from Bo Innovation, Hong Kong, who
is well-known for his modern interpretation of Chinese cuisine. He
made a poached egg in laksa stock, with cockles on the side and
deep-fried rice noodles as garnish – turning the main ingredient into
a side ingredient and vice versa.

Chef Leung said he retained what he liked about the original laksa,
but changed what he didn't fancy. "I didn't like the hardboiled egg so
I made it into a poached egg under 63 degree heat," he said. He kept
the cockles rather than the prawns (he used them to make the stock
instead) because it has a softer texture and blends well with the egg
when chewed together.

While the first dish still has much resemblance to its traditional
form, Chef Leung's other creation stretches your imagination. In his
rendition of Rojak, which he said was made to suit a kid's palate, he
replaced turnip with Chinese pear, prawn paste with black soy sauce,
peanuts with pine nuts and added rose apples and vanilla ice-cream.
"The DNA of Rojak is found in its textures. My creation has similar
bite to the original ingredients, but I think children will prefer my
version," he said. The taste, as you would have guessed by now, is
entirely different.

Most of the other chefs picked out a sauce or an ingredient to create
something entirely new. Chef Josean Martinez Alija from Nerua, Spain,
for example, made a soup out of banana flowers and the plant's stem
after discovering the ingredient at a Peranakan restaurant here. "I
like to look out for new things, it could be a new dish or an
ingredient, and then play with it and experiment with it in my
cooking," he said.
Most of these chefs have turned local street food into haute cuisine.
These, or other similarly high-toned dishes, will be introduced into
their restaurants' menus for at least six months as part of STB's
effort to promote Singapore to the rest of the world. "The chefs are
free to exercise their creativity in presenting their own
interpretation of Singapore food, reflecting our position as a capital
for culinary innovation," said Ms Ranita Sundramoorthy, STB's Director
of Attractions, Dining & Retail.
What we are curious about is whether these are how Singaporeans want
their food to be introduced to the rest of the world. Are you the one
who will laud the creativity and audaciousness of these chefs or do
you belong o the opposite camp that says, "No, we don't want the
essences of our traditional dishes to be tainted!"?
Tell us your thoughts!

Hyo-min Clarifies T-ara's "Attitude Problem"

..18 Oct – Current leader of Korean girl group T-ara, Hyo-min, has
decided to clarify the controversy surrounding the group's
disrespectful attitude that arose while performing at an event,
according to allkpop.
For the uninitiated, earlier on 14 October, a netizen on an online
community board had written about her disappointment with T-ara, "They
came to perform at a festival in Woori, and all they did was laugh and
chat on their own while lip-syncing. Their mouths didn't match up to
the words at all and they really didn't care for the performance."
The netizen continued, saying that the youngest member, Ji-yeon, was
merely staring at the floor while Qri was looking disinterested with
the MC's speech. This was not the first time for Ji-yeon as she also
faced criticism earlier for her performance in the KBS '7080 Concert'.
In her Twitter, Hyo-min clarified, "For our "Why Are You Like This"
performance, there are gestures we'll make where it looks like we're
talking to each other. That is a part of the choreography. For "Roly
Poly", we tried to make the stage look as fun as possible by laughing
and playing jokes on each other. It's a part of the performance. I
think those things have caused such a misunderstanding."
She continued by expressing the group's gratitude towards their fans,
and promised to work hard to live up to their expectations. Hyo-min
finishes with, "Please don't misunderstand us."
Source : Yahoo.com.sg

Jang Geun-suk annoys "Love Rain" production

..28 Oct – Jang Geun-suk's international schedule may not hurt him,
but it sure hurts others involved in his projects - especially the
shooting of KBS' highly anticipated drama "Love Rain".
According to allkpop website, insiders from the production claimed
that shooting for the drama was ground to a halt for two weeks due to
Jang Geun-suk's busy schedule.
The anonymous source stated, "Director Yoon Suk-ho recently brought
all the managers together to go over schedules. Because Jang Geun-suk
paid attention only to his foreign schedules, the director had to step
up to the plate. It's a rare case for the director to personally meet
with the managers."
He added, "The shooting schedule is considerably backed up. We were
supposed to have completed five episodes by now, but only got through
one. Jang Geun-suk keeps leaving in the middle of this situation, so
the directors and the other cast members are having a hard time."
Jang Geun-suk recently kicked off his Japanese Arena Tour, and also
had his first Chinese album to promote as well.
"Love Rain", which also stars SNSD's YoonA as the female lead, is
scheduled to be broadcast in early 2012. It is highly anticipated as
the drama would be a comeback for famous director Yoon Suk-ho who
directed the four season dramas, including "Winter Sonata" (2002) and
"Autumn in My Heart" (2000).
Source : Yahoo.sg

Terra Nova, TV’s most expensive series ever

It's being billed as television's most expensive series ever made and
everything about this show is B-I-G.
Before filming of its two-hour pilot episode even began, "Terra Nova"
had already racked up $10 million in costs. The pilot alone is
estimated to have cost somewhere up to $20 million.
Subsequent episodes are being budgeted at $4 million each. The last
time any pilot was this expensive was the multiple Emmy Award-winning
"Boardwalk Empire" directed by Martin Scorsese, which cost $18 million
back in 2009.
Helmed by none other as Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg,
"Terra Nova" is a cross between "Avatar", "Jurassic Park" and
"Stargate".
The premise of the 13-episode series is simple: In the year 2149,
Earth has been so completely polluted that humans have to breathe
through an air filter.
In an attempt to "reboot" human history, mankind's only hope for
survival is to travel 85 million years back in time to a colony called
"Terra Nova"and where dinosaurs still reign supreme.
The show's central character is ex-cop Jim Shannon (Jason O'Mara), a
devoted father with a chequered past, who is forced to guide his
family through this new world of limitless beauty, mystery and terror.
Adding intrigue to the show is the presence of a splinter group of
colonists with a secret agenda.
However, critical reception to the show's U.S. debut has been mixed.
Some have lauded the series' big-budget cinematography as gorgeous and
the CGI of the dinosaurs, in particular, as visually stunning. They
also praise its Hollywood movie-like production values, calling the
show "literally the biggest thing on TV this fall."
Other critics, however, were not so kind, saying the series' main
fault lies in the cheesy, corny script between the characters.
Regardless, whether the series will be renewed for a second season,
only time will tell: it's either going to be a mega-expensive flop or
a ball-out-of-the-park, smashing success.
The TV series was picked up straight to series with a 13-episode order
and will premiere in Singapore on 29 October at 8.55pm on FOX (StarHub
Channel 505) and FOX HD (StarHub Ch 558).
Watch the trailer below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6aNEIZwPFc&feature=player_embedded

Super 7 rips off SNSD's "Hoot"

27 Oct – Taiwanese girl group Super 7 who have recently rose to fame
for allegedly copycatting South Korea's favourite, SNSD, is now
criticised for performing a SNSD song at the prestigious Golden Bell
Award in Taiwan, according to soompi.
In a recording of their live performance, it can be seen that the
group performed a cover of SNSD's "Hoot," clad in the same outfits and
following the same exact choreography as the Korean girl group, but it
is not the best imitation.
After seeing the video, netizens have questioned the real motive
behind Super 7's cover performance at such an important stage.
The Super 7 performance was highly criticised not only for its
lacklustre show and the fact that the group is only dancing to another
group's song. Some even stated that the group is unworthy of being
onstage for such an important event.
A lot of netizens, including Taiwanese fans, voiced their disapproval,
"This is a Taiwanese awards show, not a show in Korea."
Others said, "The fact that they couldn't perform to their own song
means they're not ready to be a true artist."
"Why did you even debut?" they added.
Super 7 have been at the centre of controversy since their debut for
having strikingly similar concepts and looks as SNSD. Their title
track, "Mai Luo Suo," have also been under fire for featuring very
similar costumes and overall concepts to that of SNSD's "Hoot."
Golden Bell Awards is an annual Taiwanese TV show award found in 1965
and sponsored by the Taiwanese government. The supply of
goods and services made in the ordinary course of business in
Singapore by a GST registered person is subject to GST. Under this scheme, 75% of the first S$10,000 of CI is tax
exempt and 50% of the next S$290,000 of CI is tax exempt:
Income Exemption Exempt amount
First $10,000 @ 75% $7,500
Next $290,000 @ 50% $145,000
Total $300,000 $152,500
The exemption does not apply to Singapore dividends received by
companies enjoying a concessionary tax rate granted by a tax incentive
and income of a non-resident company subject to a final withholding
tax rate.
Qualifying newly Singapore-incorporated companies may enjoy a separate
tax exemption scheme for its first three consecutive years of
assessment. This scheme allows qualifying new companies to enjoy a tax
exemption on the first S$100,000 of CI and on 50% of the next
S$200,000 of CI:
Income Exemption Exempt amount
First $100,000 @ 100% $100,000
Next $200,000 @ 50% $100,000
Total $300,000 $200,000

Resident and non-resident companies are taxed on income accruing in or
derived from Singapore as well as on foreign income remitted (actual
or deemed) into Singapore. Remittance of foreign income (dividends,
branch profits, services income) may be tax exempt when remitted by a
resident company under certain conditions. A company is tax resident
in Singapore if the management and control of its business is
exercised in Singapore.
The tax year, referred to as the year of assessment (YA), runs from 1
January to 31 December of each year. Income for the YA is computed
based on the income derived in the preceding calendar year (known as
the basis year) from all sources. For a trade, business, profession or
vocation with a non-31 December accounting year end, the Inland
Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) normally accepts the accounting
year as the basis year instead of the calendar year. Under such
circumstances, tax is assessed for each YA on the income for the
accounting year preceding that YA.
A company is required to provide an estimate of its CI within three
months after the end of its financial year. The estimated tax payable
can be paid via instalments. The number of instalments available
depends on when the estimated CI is filed within the three-month
window period and on the method of filing. The annual corporate income
tax return must be filed by 30 November of the YA. After the
submission of the tax return, IRAS will issue a notice of assessment
to collect any tax shortfall. The tax payment has to be paid within
one month after the date of issue of the notice of assessment.

STAMP DUTY
Stamp duty is levied on legal instruments relating to the sale,
mortgage or lease of immovable property and the sale or mortgage of
stocks and shares.

DETERMINATION OF TAXABLE INCOME
Singapore-incorporated companies are required to prepare their
financial accounts according to Singapore Financial Reporting
Standards (FRSs). The FRSs are closely modelled on the International
Accounting Standards (IAS) and International Financial Reporting
Standards (IFRS) issued by the International Accounting Standards
Board (IASB). The accounting profits are adjusted in accordance with
Singapore tax rules to arrive at the taxable income.
Companies are required under FRS to prepare their financial accounts
according to their functional currency. Those with non-Singapore
dollar functional currency accounts are required to furnish their tax
computations to the IRAS in that functional currency. Expenses must be
incurred wholly and exclusively for the production of income in order
to be tax deductible unless specifically disallowed or restricted
(e.g. noncommercial motor vehicles, medical expenses, expenses of a
capital nature). Special rules apply to expenses incurred by
investment holding companies, companies that commence business
activities during the financial year and expenses incurred in respect
of foreign sourced income.

INTEREST DEDUCTIONS
Interest is deductible to the extent it relates to funds borrowed for
income-producing purposes. There are no thin capitalisation rules in
Singapore.

STOCK/INVENTORY
There is no prescribed valuation methodology under the domestic income
tax law. As such, IRAS will generally accept the valuation methodology
under FRS.

CAPITAL GAINS AND LOSSES
There is no separate capital gains tax regime in Singapore. Gains of a
capital nature are not subject to income tax. Similarly, expenses of a
capital nature are not deductible for income tax purposes. IRAS will
look at the facts and circumstances of the transaction to determine
whether the gain is capital in nature or a trading gain which is
subject to income tax.

DIVIDENDS
Dividends paid by Singapore companies are exempt from tax in the hands
of the shareholder from 1 January 2008. Foreign sourced dividends
remitted into Singapore may be tax-exempt under certain circumstances.

CAPITAL ALLOWANCE
Capital allowances, instead of accounting depreciation, are granted
for plant and machinery acquired and used in a trade or business. Most
plant and machinery qualify for three-year straight line tax
depreciation. Low cost items (costing not more than S$1,000 per item)
may be tax depreciated in full, subject to a total claim of S$30,000
for each YA. Certain equipment (such as computers, automation
equipment, pollution-control equipment, energy-saving equipment) may
qualify for 100% tax depreciation in the year of acquisition.
Industrial buildings used for qualifying purposes can claim an initial
allowance of 25% plus an annual allowance of 3%.
Current year unused capital allowances can be carried back (up to a
total of S$100,000 for both unused capital allowances and unused tax
losses) to the YA immediately preceding the YA in which the capital
allowance arose. The unused capital allowances can also be carried
forward indefinitely. The utilisation of unused capital allowances
carried back or carried forward is subject to the business continuity
test and the shareholding test. For the YA 2009 and YA 2010, the
unused capital allowances (together with unused losses) can be carried
back to the three YAs immediately preceding YA 2009 or YA 2010 and up
to a limit of S$200,000.
The business continuity test requires the business/trade for which the
capital allowances were granted to be carried on. The shareholding
test requires that there is no substantial change (no more than 50%)
in the ultimate shareholders and their respective shareholdings on
certain dates.

TAX LOSSES
Current year unused trade losses can be carried back (up to a total of
S$100,000 for both unused capital allowances and unused tax losses) to
the YA immediately preceding the YA in which the trade losses were
incurred up. The unused tax losses can also be carried forward
indefinitely. For the YA 2009 and YA 2010, the unused losses (together
with unused capital allowances) can be carried back to the three YAs
immediately preceding YA 2009 or YA 2010, as the case may be) and up
to a limit of S$200,000.
The carry back/forward of tax losses is subject to the same
shareholding test for the carry back/forward of unused capital
allowances.

TAX INCENTIVES
Singapore has a comprehensive list of tax incentives and development
schemes to attract investments and to assist investors in expanding
their businesses. Highlights of key incentives and schemes are
summarised below.
The Regional and International Headquarters Awards encourages
companies to use Singapore as a regional or global base. A customized
package of tax incentives (such as Pioneer Incentive, Development and
Expansion Incentive, Investment Allowances) and grants will be given
to qualifying companies.
The Pioneer Incentive encourages the introduction and growth of new
industries in Singapore. A pioneer enterprise is granted full income
tax exemption on its qualifying profits for up to 15 years.
Investors undertaking projects that will generate significant economic
benefits for Singapore may apply for the Development and Expansion
Incentive. The incentive provides preferential income tax rates on all
qualifying profits above a pre-determined base, for a set period.
Companies investing into new equipment that introduces new technology
to the industry or contributes to its efficiency can apply for
Investment Allowances. This is a capital allowance given to partially
offset the costs of acquiring qualifying equipment within a set period
and is in addition to the normal tax depreciation.
The Approved Royalties Incentive encourages companies to transfer
their cutting edge technology and knowhow to Singapore by providing
full or partial withholding tax exemption for royalty payments or
technical assistance fees payable to non-residents. Investors looking
into developing or bringing new R&D capabilities can apply for the
Research Incentive scheme. The project should result in an increase of
hiring and training of research scientists and engineers in Singapore.
The scheme provides grants to partially offset the R&D project costs
incurred for manpower training, equipment investment, intellectual
property management and professional services.
The Local Enterprise Finance Scheme (LEFS) is designed to assist and
encourage companies (with at least 30% local ownership) to upgrade and
expand their operations. LEFS loans are available for factories,
machinery and working capital.
The Local Enterprise Technical Assistance Scheme (LETAS) encourages
and assists companies (with at least 30% local ownership) in seeking
external expertise to improve their operations. Generally, assistance
provided is up to 50% of the cost of engaging an external expert to
implement quality management and IT systems (e.g. ISO certification,
upgrading computer systems).

FOREIGN TAX RELIEF
Under Singapore's network of 60 comprehensive double tax treaties,
Singapore will grant a tax credit for foreign tax suffered in the
treaty country. The tax credit granted is limited to the lower of the
foreign tax suffered and the Singapore tax payable on that income.
Singapore also grants a unilateral tax credit for certain income
derived from countries that have not entered into tax treaties with
Singapore.

CORPORATE GROUPS
A corporate group (comprising of a Singapore-incorporated holding
company and its Singapore-incorporated subsidiaries) can transfer
current-year unused losses, unused capital allowances and unused
donations within companies in the group. There is a 75% ownership
requirement that need to be maintained to remain within the group.

RELATED PARTY TRANSACTIONS
IRAS issued transfer pricing guidelines for the first time in February
2006. The purpose of the guidelines is to give guidance on applying
the arm's length principle and the recommended preparation and
maintenance of documentation to demonstrate compliance with the arm's
length principle. In February 2009, IRAS issued a supplementary guide
to provide further guidance and application of the arm's length
principle to related party loans and related party services.
Singapore is now in the process of legislating the arm's length
principle for related party transactions in the domestic tax law. This
will give the IRAS the basis for making adjustments if it is of the
opinion that the arms length principle is not applied appropriately by
the taxpayer

WITHHOLDING TAX
Interest, fees, payments in connection with any loan or indebtedness: 15%
Royalty or other payment for the use of movable property: 10% (final tax)
Payment for the use or right to use scientific, technical, industrial
or commercial knowledge or information: 10% (final tax)
Technical assistance and service fees and management fees: Prevailing
corporate tax rate (20% for individuals)
Rent or other payments for the use of movable properties: 15% (final tax)
Time charter fees and voyage charter fees, bareboat charter fees: Nil to 3%
Directors' remuneration/directors' fees: 20%
There is no withholding tax on dividends.
Source : http://www.taxrates.cc

Singapore personal Income Tax

Resident individuals deriving employment income and rental income is subject to
Singapore personal income tax at progressive rates up to 20%, based on
the following progressive rates.

Singapore Personal Income Tax Rates for resident individuals:
Chargeable Income Tax Rate Gross Tax Payable ($)
First $20,000 0% 0
Next $10,000 3.50% 350
First $30,000 - 350
Next $10,000 5.50% 550
First $40,000 - 900
Next $40,000 8.50% 3,400
First $80,000 - 4,300
Next $80,000 14% 11,200
First $160,000 - 15,500
Next $160,000 17% 27,200
First $320,000 - 42,700
Above $320,000 20%
Singapore Personal Income Tax Rates for non-resident individuals:
Employment income of non-residents are taxed at a 15% tax rate or
resident rate, whichever gives rise to a higher tax amount. A nonresident
individual (other than a director) exercising a short-term employment
in Singapore for not more than 60 days may be exempt from tax in
Singapore.

A Singapore citizen is considered tax resident if the individual
normally resides in Singapore except for temporary absences that are
consistent with the claim to be a resident. A foreigner is considered
resident in Singapore if the individual is physically present or
exercises a Singapore employment for 183 days or more during the basis
year.
Non-resident individuals exercising an employment in Singapore are
subject to income tax depending on the number of days in Singapore.
Employment income derived from short term employment (not more than 60
days) is exempt from Singapore income tax for the non-resident
employee. This exemption does not apply to non-resident company
directors, non-resident public entertainers or non-resident
professionals including foreign experts, foreign speakers, queen's
counsels, consultants, trainers, coaches etc. Nonresident employees
exercising an employment in Singapore for a period of 61 - 182 days
will be taxed at the higher of 15% (without personal tax reliefs) or
the progressive resident rates (with personal tax reliefs).
Non-residents deriving rental income are taxed at 20%.
Dividend income from Singapore companies, interest income from
savings, current or fixed deposit accounts with approved banks or
finance companies in Singapore and foreign-sourced income are tax-
exempt for individuals (regardless of residency).
Filing status – Each individual is required to file a separate tax
return, including married couples living together.
Taxable income – Income includes gains or profits from a trade or
profession and earnings from employment (including the value of
employer-provided food, clothing or housing and allowances other than
for subsistence, transport, travel or entertainment).
Capital gains – Singapore does not tax capital gains.
Tax Deductions and allowances – Personal reliefs and tax rebates are
granted only to resident individuals. Personal reliefs may be deducted
against assessable income to ascertain chargeable income on which tax
is then computed. Tax rebates are deducted from the tax payable to
determine the final tax liability of the individual.

Other taxes on individuals:
Capital duty – No
Stamp duty – Same as for companies.
Capital acquisitions tax – No
Net wealth/net worth tax – No
Real property tax – Property tax, levied on all immovable property in
Singapore, is payable annually by the owner at the beginning of the
year. Immovable property includes Housing Development Board flats,
houses, offices, factories, shops and land. The annual property tax is
calculated based on a percentage of the gross annual value of the
property as determined by the property tax department. The property
tax is 4% for owner-occupied residential property and 10% for other
property. A property tax exemption for land under certain development
may be granted for certain cases.
Inheritance/estate tax –Estate duty has been abolished for deaths
occurring on or after 15 February 2008.
Social security contributions – Only employees who are Singapore
citizens or Singapore permanent residents are required to contribute
to the CPF at a rate of 20%. However,
this move has been put on hold indefinitely.

SERVICE TAX
Service tax is a single stage tax applicable to certain prescribed
goods and services in Malaysia. The tax also applies to professional
and consultancy services as prescribed by the Malaysian customs
authorities. The rate of service tax currently is fixed at 5% of the
price, charge, or premium of the taxable goods or services prescribed.
Professional services provided by a company to companies within the
same group will be exempted from service tax, subject to terms and
conditions.
Generally, the imposition of service tax is subject to a specific
threshold based on an annual turnover ranging from RM150,000 to
RM500,000, subject to the types of taxable services and taxable
person. The threshold would not apply for certain prescribed
professional and consultancy services.
It is proposed that with effect from 1 January 2010, service tax be
imposed on credit cards and charge cards including those issued free
of charge as follows:
- RM50 per year on the principal card
- RM25 per year on the supplementary cards.

SALES TAX
Sales tax is a single stage tax imposed on taxable goods manufactured
locally and/or imported. "Taxable goods" means goods of a class or
kind not for the time being exempted from sales tax. Generally, all
exports are exempted from sales tax.
Manufacturers of taxable goods are required to register with the
custom authorities and to levy, charge and collect the tax from their
customers. For imported goods, sales tax is collected from the
importer upon the release of taxable goods from customs control.
Sales tax is an ad valorem and can be computed based on the value of taxable
goods sold, used, disposed of, or imported.
Sales tax is imposed on certain imported and locally manufactured
goods under the Sales Tax Act 1972. The tax rate ranges from 5 - 10%
for majority of the goods except for food preparations other than
alcoholic and non-alcoholic compound preparations (other than those of
heading No. 33.02) used for making beverages. Sales tax is also
imposed on petroleum and petroleum products according to specific
rates.
http://www.taxrates.cc

Malaysia Corporate Tax

The standard corporate tax rate in Malaysia is 25%, while resident
small and medium-sized companies (i.e. companies capitalised at MYR
2.5 million or less and not part of a group having a company exceeding
the above capitalisation threshold) are taxed at 20% on the first MYR
500,000, with the balance taxed at the 25% corporate tax rate:

- Company with paid up capital not more than RM2.5 million
. On first RM500,000
20%
. Corporations in Malaysia have until
31 December 2013 to adopt the STS. Dividends received under the
imputation system are taxable with a credit available for underlying
corporate tax paid. Dividends paid by companies using the STS are not
taxable.
Capital gains – Capital gains are not taxed in Malaysia, except for
gains derived from the disposal of real property or on the alienation
of shares in a real property company (RPC). The real property gains
tax, which applied to such gains, had been suspended since 1 April
2007, but is reinstated at a rate of 5% as from 1 January 2010.
Losses – While losses can only be carried back for assessment years
2009 and 2010, they may be carried forward indefinitely (except where
there is a substantial change in corporate ownership of a dormant
company).
Surtax – No
Alternative minimum tax – A Labuan offshore company may elect to pay
MYR 20,000 or to be taxed at 3% of the audited accounting profit.
Foreign tax credit – Foreign tax paid may be credited against
Malaysian tax on the same profits (limited to 50% of foreign tax in
the absence of a tax treaty), but the credit is limited to the amount
of Malaysian tax payable on the foreign income.
Participation exemption – No, but foreignsource income is not taxable
and local dividends do not attract further tax or are tax exempt.
Holding company regime – An investment holding company (IHC) is a
company whose activities consist mainly of the holding of investments
and that derives not less than 80% of its gross income, other than
gross income from a source consisting of a business of holding of an
investment, from such investments. Generally, only expenses falling
within the definition of "permitted expenses" in the tax legislation
would qualify for tax deduction in respect of an IHC.
Tax Incentives – A wide range of incentives are available for certain
industries, such as manufacturing, IT services, biotechnology, Islamic
finance, energy conservation and environment protection. Available
incentives include: tax holidays of up to 10 years (pioneer status);
investment tax allowances (i.e. 100% allowance on capital investments
made up to 10 years); accelerated capital allowances; double
deductions; and reinvestment allowances (i.e. 60% allowance on capital
investments made in connection with approved projects).

Withholding tax:
Dividends – Malaysia does not levy withholding tax on dividends.
Interest – A withholding tax of 15% applies to interest paid to
nonresidents, which may be reduced under an applicable tax treaty.
Royalties – A withholding tax of 10% applies to royalties paid to
nonresidents, which may be reduced under an applicable tax treaty.
Other – A withholding tax of 10% applies to rentals of movable
property, technical fees for services rendered in Malaysia and certain
one-time income paid to nonresidents, which may be reduced under
applicable tax treaties.
Branch remittance tax – No

Other taxes on corporations:
Capital duty – Capital duty is levied at rates ranging from MYR 1,000
to MYR 70,000.
Payroll tax – Tax on employment income is withheld by the employer
under a pay as you earn (PAYE) scheme and remitted to the tax
authorities.
Real property tax – Individual states in Malaysia levy "quit" rent and
assessments at varying rates.
Social security – Employers and employees are required to make social
security contributions to the Social Security Organisation (SOSCO).
Generally, an employer contributes 1%-1.25% of an employee's
remuneration. Employers and employees also must contribute to the
Employees Provident Fund (EPF) at the rate of 12% and 8% of the
employee's remuneration, respectively.
Stamp duty – Stamp duty is levied at varying rates between 1% to 3% of
the transacted value of property transfers and 0.3% on share
transaction documents.
Transfer tax – No, except for stamp duty.
Other – Equity requirements have been substantially relaxed as from 2009.

Anti-avoidance rules:
Transfer pricing – Transfer pricing rules are imminent and guidelines
have been issued by the tax authorities. Taxpayers can request an
advance pricing agreement.
Thin capitalisation – There are no specific thin cap rules, but
legislation has been amended to allow for such rules.
Controlled foreign companies – No
Disclosure requirements – Yes

Administration and compliance:
Malaysia Tax year – Fiscal year (i.e. generally the accounting year).
Consolidated tax returns – Consolidation is not permitted as each
company is required to file a separate tax return. However, subject to
certain conditions, 70% of a company's adjusted loss may be used to
set off profits of a related entity.
Tax Filing requirements – Malaysia imposes a self-assessment tax
regime. Advance corporate tax is payable in 12 monthly instalments. A
tax return must be filed within 7 months of the company's year end.
Penalties – Penalties at various rates apply for failure to comply.
Rulings – Taxpayers may request an advance ruling on the tax treatment
of a specific transaction. Public rulings also are issued.
Source : http://tax-rates.cc

Vietnamese prostitutes openly prowl Chinatown

Middle-aged Vietnamese women have replaced their Chinese counterparts
in offering sex to elderly men and retirees along Chinatown.
In recent times, the women from China have become a rare sight after
various raids and tough action against them. However, Vietnamese women
who look to be in their mid-to-late-40s have filled the gap.
These women, believed to be on social visit passes, scour the area
around Chinatown MRT station, stopping now and then to talk to elderly
men and retirees sitting around the area, reported The New Paper.
A hawker, who declined to be named, said, "These women are not so
young, so they openly target the retirees because maybe they are the
ones who are willing to pay."
Shin Min Daily News quoted a man saying, "She (a Vietnamese woman)
started chatting with me, then pulled me to a corner and asked me if I
was interested (in sex).
"She was bold and even quoted me her price," he added.
The women, however, dress discreetly in blouses and jeans instead of
revealing outfits to avoid unnecessary attention.
Another hawker, Tan, said, "They are here at all hours of the day,
chatting up the older men who hang around here and, if they are
willing, offer sexual services.
"Before, we had China girls here… now it looks like these Vietnamese
women are taking over.
"I think it's not good for the image of the place."
Another man, who runs a food stall at People's Park Centre, told TNP,
"I've noticed quite a few Vietnamese women hanging around during the
day time and even in the evening these last few months.
"They will sit around and chat up the men who congregate here."
According to one man, the going rates for these prostitutes average
S$100 per hour.
Another man said that the prostitutes are actually from the back lanes
of Geylang, where it is now over-populated by women from China,
Indonesia and Vietnam, all vying for the same customers. Thus, they
have to resort to operating in the open of Chinatown for money.
"They know it's dangerous and the risk of being arrested is high
because they're operating in the open, but in the end, it's all about
the money," he said.
Many prostitutes have moved away from Geylang in recent years, to
neighbourhoods such as Joo Chiat, Haig Road and Tanjong Katong.
In 2009, a total of 7,614 foreign women were arrested for suspected
vice-related activities, up from 5,047 the previous year
Source: Yahoo.com

Universal Studios’ Transformers ride launches Dec 3 (US Singapore)

Mark the date down -- Saturday, 3 December.
That's when the highly anticipated Transformers theme park ride at
Universal Studios Singapore throws its doors open to the public.
Gracing the exclusive gala premiere of "Transformers: The Ride" a day
earlier will be none other than Michael Bay, director and executive
producer of the Transformers blockbuster franchise and the
attraction's creative consultant.
"I am very excited about the debut of this attraction at Universal
Studios Singapore. He became very close with his biological sister, the novelist
Mona Simpson. But he decided he didn't want to meet his father,
Abdulfattah Jandali, who had left his mother when Mona was still
young. (The couple gave Jobs up for adoption when they were both in
graduate school.)
"I learned a little bit about him, and I didn't like what I learned,"
Jobs says in new audio recordings released by Isaacson. "I asked her
to not tell him that we'd ever met and not tell him anything about
me."
But it turns out they had already met, even though neither man
realized it. When Mona Simpson tracked down Jandali, he told her about
a restaurant he used to manage in Silicon Valley that was very
popular. "Everybody used to come there, even Steve Jobs used to come
there," he told her. "He was a great tipper." Simpson was shocked,
but didn't reveal that Jobs was Jandali's son.
"I remember meeting the owner who was from Syria, and it was most
certainly him, and I shook his hand and he shook my hand and that's
all," Jobs told Isaacson.
Jandali, now 80, said he sent Jobs' birthday emails after he found out
he was his father, and claims that one time he received a response
that just said "Thank you."
source: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/steve-jobs-unusual-meeting-father-135624786.html

Straight talk with Singapore’s sex doctor

yahoo.com.sg
By Deborah Choo
Tue, Oct 25, 2011........
Dr Martha Lee broke ground in Singapore a few years ago when she
started offering sexuality and intimacy coaching. …
Beautiful, confident, outspoken. Those who know Dr. Martha Lee or have
come across her name would know that she is Singapore's only certified
clinical sexologist and sexuality educator.
Lee created a sensation in Singapore when she founded Eros Coaching in
2009 and started offering sexuality and intimacy consultancy.
Often cited in the media, she is the appointed sex expert for Men's
Health magazine both in Singapore and Malaysia, and for Durex
Singapore's Facebook page. Also a writer with local website
publichouse.sg, she was most recently voted in March 2011 as among the
"Top 100 Inspiring Women" by CozyCot, an online women's site in Asia.
But perhaps what most do not know is that Eros Coaching is not Lee's
first entrepreneurship venture.
Prior to this in 2005, Lee founded Youth Employment (Singapore), a
youth-initiated non-profit society aimed at establishing itself as a
focal resource point for youths in employment. She spent three years
for this project — two of which she ran the organisation full-time,
from working on administrative matters, recruiting volunteers, and
even organising fundraisers.
The initiative came after she quit her job as a corporate
communications executive. She entered the industry upon graduation
from Monash University, Australia with a communications degree.
"Leaving the corporate world after eight years for a non-profit was a
scary step as my future, including my source of income, was uncertain.
And having done that, it made me realise that there are many different
models of lifestyle which may work better for different people," Lee
says.
Running YES proved to be challenging and draining. She honed her
counseling skills during that period, but she wanted her own company.
So she left to pursue a Doctorate in Human Sexuality from the
Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in the United States.
Immediately after graduation, Eros Coaching was born.
Her career change from an executive to a full-time counselor may seem
worlds apart, but Lee argues otherwise. The similarity in both jobs,
she says, is being able to render help which is something that brings
her the most satisfaction. The only difference is the target audience.
While she enjoyed her previous job, the politics proved to be too
much. "I just wanted to do the job without the drama. My own practice,
I decided, would be lean, flexible, and focused on operating
effectively," she says.
The title "clinical sexologist" alone does raise some eyebrows in
Singapore's relatively conservative society, but only because most are
unfamiliar with this field. A common question she receives is whether
her family approved of her pursuing this field. To this, she replies
tirelessly that it was never an issue.
"I don't think my parents or siblings understood what my studies or
work would include. They didn't ask and I didn't share. My attitude
has always been that it is my life and I lead it the way I feel is
best for me."
Capitalising on the Internet and writing articles for various
publications and online sites from time to time to educate
Singaporeans on sexual issues in general, her business venture has
done well in a relatively short time.
Her firm offers services ranging from sexuality and life coaching, to
workshops on sexual techniques such as mastering the art of hand jobs
or blow jobs, to accompanied visits to a sex shop for fun, educational
tours.
Of course, with the Internet nowadays, learning about sex -- from
reading articles, or watching videos -- is not difficult. But if you
are looking to learn the most in the shortest time, or even further
your sexual knowledge with some hands-on workshops, then Eros Coaching
may be your answer.
Lee may seem vocal when you read her articles. But one thing you can
be assured of, she is extremely protective and tight lipped not only
of her own privacy but also of her clients'. Right from the beginning
upon accepting the interview, Lee was quick to lay down the ground
rules: No to any talks about sex with her husband, and no to any
information concerning her clients.
Not only that, she does not discriminate. A statement she
intentionally included on her website caught my eye. It stated that
she welcomes "individuals as well as couples of all sexual
orientations".
When queried about her take on the local government's repeated refusal
to legalise homogenous marriages, she unapologetically questioned the
stance of the ruling party.
"We all want the freedom to lead our lives without fear of
repercussion. It is our right as human beings. But the ruling party
doesn't want to lose voters. It's simply politics. It doesn't make it
right in my eyes," she said readily.
In her line of work, just like everybody else's, Lee reveals that
while there are bad days, but she is not giving up on her calling.
Sharing her life motto based on a quote from one of her role models,
Eleanor Roosevelt, Lee says, "You gain strength, courage, and
confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear
in the face."

Sentosa Island

A slice of paradise right in our doorstep, Sentosa offers a kaleidoscope of attractions and activities.
