Update An additional walk has been scheduled on Saturday, 1st July. Remember that the booking lines open tomorrow morning!

In the coming quarter, guided tours to Chek Jawa in Pulau Ubin have been scheduled for Sunday, 16th July and Monday, 17th July at 8.30 a.m. on both days.

Visits to Chek Jawa have to be managed to prevent its delicate habitats (there are more than one) from becoming wasteland. As walks can only be held in daylight hours at the lowest of low tides, dates for walks are very limited. Time and tide, as they say, wait for no man.

How do you book a place on the walk?

Well, at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, 1st June, NParks' Pulau Ubin Hotline - 6542 4108 or 6545 4761 - will open to take bookings for the July walks. Be patient, persistent and polite. Bookings are usually snapped up really fast. To be fair to everyone, each booking call is limited to 10 places.

Name me three museums in Singapore that are not run by the National Heritage Board.

Got you there, didn't I? International Museum Day 2006 is your opportunity to discover Singapore's museums. More importantly, you'll learn more about a whole range of local heritage topics and issues. And of course, it'll be fun!

If you want a sample of a few different museums, you might want to try the Museum Hoppin' Trails. These self-paced, themed trails will provide quick introductions to several museums in Singapore. There will be special programmes lined up at each of the museums along the trail. I've previewed a few of the sights along the trails.

UPDATE: The MIA Trail is fully booked!

Since yours truly will be guiding, I must recommend the M.I.A Trail. This once-off guided night tour will start at the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, leading on to Kent Ridge Park, followed by Reflections at Bukit Chandu and finally, Memories at Old Ford Factory.

What's the common thread? What does nature have to do with World War II?

Vesak Day Celebrations

Tomorrow millions of Buddhists around the world, including Singapore, celebrate Vesak Day, or Buddha Purnima. Vesak Day commemorates the birth, enlightenment and final Nirvana of the Buddha. This year marks 2550 years of Buddhism. Among other things, the day is marked by visits and offerings at temples, communal ceremonies and processions, and for some, by going vegetarian on the day.

This year, I have a chance to volunteer at a Vegetarian Food Fair in a Buddhist temple. This is at the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery (KMSPKS), the largest Buddhist temple in Singapore.

The food fair is only one of the many Vesak Day celebrations at the temple this weekend - there's plenty more! And if you happen to visit, do stop by and get a healthy fruit juice or snack - I'll be helping out at the Vegetarian Society's stall between 9 AM and 1 PM :)

Their website, unfortunately, has a severe lack of details. Quite shocking really. They went to all this trouble to set it up, but never packed it with content. Anyway, if it's from 8 am to 8 pm, I trust there had better be some carnival going on!

Still on the Beautiful Game, the National Library Board is holding a Football Double Bill on Saturday, 13 May.

This exciting two-parter will see two experts talk about the other aspects of football, offering a different perspective into the game we think we know so well. The first is a video recording of a talk given by Prof. David J. Hand from Imperial College on the study of probability and coincidences.

The second is by Wan Kong Wah, a principal research engineer who will touch on the various developments that have taken place in relation to the game of football in recent years.

Essentially clueless about Pulau Ubin, Singapore's time capsule?

Take a journey on bicycle with the Jungle Fowls, a bunch of friendly volunteer guides from NUS' Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, and discover the nature and heritage of Pulau Ubin. Even novice cyclists are welcome! If you can balance yourself on a bike, you will survive the ride!

The Play: This original English musical follows two small town dreamers in their journey to and through "Bollywood" the all-glitter-and-glamour Indian film industry, and the rollercoaster ride that they face as they pursue their ambitions. The entire play is narrated in the tone of a light hearted comedy and has ten original music compositions.

The Cause: Kathputli is the annual drama production by SOIS, and is a venture created for raising money towards charity work. All proceeds from this year's show will go towards the Sree Narayana Mission, a charitable organization that runs the Home for the Aged Sick and works for the welfare of the elderly.

[Dec] Free Bukit Chandu Shuttle, Animation Screening & Open House

For the past 5 years, a self-taught photographer, Akiko Koga has been loafing away, collecting documents of her life with a camera with no preconceived project. Her 2nd solo exhibition features a series of B&W and colour works of her surroundings and observations�?�the toys she collects, her little niece, her grumpy dog, goldfish, places she has visited, grubby restaurants in which she has eaten�?�

Catch a glimpse of the goofy and awkward world as seen through her lens!

Here is singapurathisweek's email interview with Akiko.

Would you like to introduce yourselves to our readers?
My name is Akiko Koga. I was born in Japan and grew up in Singapore. I�??m a self-taught photographer and a freelance writer.

What drew you to photography?
I picked up the camera 5 years ago when I went on a trip to Hong Kong. I got completely hooked. I�??m terribly shy and I�??m not very good with words. I have lots of ideas going through my head. Photography was a good way of working out that idea. I guess I was looking for an expressive outlet and photography happened to answer that need. I�??d love to work on moving images one day.

A Japanese photographer living in Singapore... how did that come to be?
I came here when I was 8 years old �??cause of my father�??s work. I grew up here. I left for Japan when I was 17 but couldn�??t stand the cold there and I missed home. I decided to come back here to work. I think I�??m more Singaporean than a Japanese!

Have you really been loafing around? How do you get by?
I work as a freelance writer and I do quite a bit of translation work. Other than that, I�??d be walking around taking photographs. I bring my compact camera with me wherever I go.
I get by probably because my life is pretty simple. It revolves around photography, movies, music and books. I�??m not into shopping and partying so that helps.

What is the upcoming exhibition all about?
There�??s no particular theme to it. My previous exhibition �??Hello Girlfriend�?? was all about girls and I wanted to take a break from portraits. I thought it�??d be good to show my other works that�??s been stacking up over the years. There�??ll be landscapes and travel photographs of Italy, Spain, France, Hong Kong and Japan.

Why 'at the tip of the letter k'? Something do to with your name, perhaps?
I picked this line up from a poem by Jeff Tweedy, my favourtie singer-songwriter from WILCO. When I read the poem, it just hit me. I guess it means that you�??ll get to see a part of my world. K also stands for squirrel K, which is my nickname. I�??ve had this imaginary band called �??squirrel K & the shy rockers�?? for the longest time.

You're displaying a mix of B&W and colour prints. Any particular reason for using mixed media?
I�??ve always shot on colour and I wanted to try out something new. I still prefer colour though. It gives more life to things.

Do you shoot digital? Why? Why not?
I shoot on film. I tried using a digital camera once, but I wasn�??t very comfortable with it. It seemed all so easy and fluffy. I didn�??t like how the pictures turned out either. With film, every shot is so precious.

I take it you're an avid toy collector. What kind of toys do you collect?
I have a fascination for small and old things like bottles, clocks and dolls. If I had the money I�??d go out and save all the old cameras.

How's your goldfish? Is he/she the star of the exhibition?
Kalkitos is fine. You won�??t get to see much of him. There�??ll be more of my dog Boo Boo and my 3-year-old niece Hinako.

What's your shooting philosophy?
I like photographs with love and a bit of hope in it. I try to achieve that in my work.

One word to describe your photos:
Quirky.

One word to describe yourself:
Awkward!
