The fragility of life

Today's news featured another person who "fell" onto the MRT tracks.

Life is indeed fragile. At times, accidents happen and one is called to the next world before their time on this world is up. At other times, people linger on in homes and hospices at the ripe old ages, waiting for the transition.

Even as you enjoy life to the fullest and would live a rich and fruitful life, pause, think and reflect.

What happens if the unspeakable happens?
Who will take care of our loved ones when we are not around?
What can you do to take care of your loved ones even when you have moved on?

Consider the need to leave your last instructions of the earth to your next-of-kin or your trusted relative or friend who can be your executor or trustee. If you have a child or children, you may want to appoint a substitute or joint guardian for your children.

No matter what happens, you want to be in control of how your assets would be distributed.

You and I are actors on the stage of life. We perform various roles as son or daughter, husband or wife, father or mother, brother or sister. As we go through our lives in our various roles, do we stop and ponder, what happens to it all when "IT" happens.

Why write a Will?

In life there are only two certainties, one is taxation while the other is death.

Whilst many of you would not want to talk or bring up a topic about your own mortality, you need to consider how you can provide for your loved ones and family as a mature, responsible and caring person while you are still on this world.

In the absence of a will, you cannot ensure that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes when one passes on. There are many people in Singapore who do not have a will and who pass on without making sure that their loved ones, family are adequately provided for from their estate after their death. As a result, a number of unnecessary complications arise, making worse the grief of the bereaved and the expenses of settling the deceased person's estate.

If you pass on without a will in Singapore, the Intestate Success Act (ISA) (the law) decides who will receive your assets. Some people think that you are married and die intestate, the surviving spouse inherits everything. This may not be so as it depends on whether there are parents as the parents will take 50% if there is a surviving spouse as well as parents of the bereaved still living.

Instead of letting the law determine who is provided for when you move on to the next world, write a will to ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
