Marketers tend to think of contests and sweepstakes only in the mindset of acquiring new leads, and emails for the database. But contests are also a fantastic way to engage your existing customers, whom you’ve spent much time and cost acquiring!

While contests are certainly not new to the marketer’s toolkit, they have taken on new life with the growth of the social web. Campaigns create high levels of awareness as they tend to be shared virally.

Gone are the days when you needed to build contests from scratch. There are dozens of platforms (popular ones now include Rafflecopter and WizeHive) that can be used to deploy contests for your business, on your website and/or Facebook and everywhere in between.

While these may make things simpler, there is the key matter of data ownership and privacy. Most contest platforms have third-party terms and conditions that you, and often your entrants, are forced to agree with – and who knows where personal data is being stored.

Single Entry Point’s contest pages are branded for seamless integration in your existing website, and you completely own and control the data, as campaigns are deployed on your servers (or ours).

Our Facebook app also makes it easy to grow your fan base and engage with your audience. The entry mechanism is build right into your page, and gated – meaning users must first like your page to access the entry form. At no time is any data shared with Facebook (or any other third parties).

Lastly, a critical component contest platforms don’t typically offer is front to back strategy and execution. Your checklist needs to include campaign branding, creative, legal, deployment, promotion, project management, entrant support (for tech trouble or questions), winner drawing, data scrubbing, entry validation, reporting, and prize shipment.

Happily, this is what Single Entry Point does best! Plus, you can track individual customer engagement with detailed, visual reports that show entries by source, by day, and by location, plotted on Google Maps for easy visualization.

You run a small or medium business. Maybe you sell eBooks. Or monthly cheese subscriptions (yum!). Or personal training. You understand your industry, your customers, your pricing. You’re an expert.

You also have a website, which you want to use to promote your business. You want to be found on Google and other search platforms, which is possibly the reason you are reading this blog. But staying up to date with search engine optimization seems impossible.

One article tells you to pursue links; another tells you links are dead. One site says to focus on Google Places; another on Yelp reviews. Your web designer might suggest you to build a separate mobile site. Your cousin’s boyfriend says, no, no – you need responsive design.

Who’s right? Who cares! You just want your website to look good, and grow your business. Reputable firms and agencies that offer digital marketing services – such as SEO, online advertising, and email marketing – are experts in their field too. They toil on the information superhighway daily, helping businesses get found online, and converting those visitors to customers.

Emails that show up in your spam folder promising you’ll have the number one rank in Google in just two weeks are just that – spam. Professional marketers would never solicit business this way, or suggest you do the same.

Single Entry Point Marketing has developed some of North America’s largest e-commerce websites – for over 16 years. A unique blend of expertise, proprietary technology, and intelligent application of data deliver incredible results – simply, they make the right information available to the right people, at the right time.

So, don’t stay up at night worrying about SEO. Just get ready for more customers, increased revenue, and a better ROI.

The way to do this is through a content that capitalizes that on what people are searching for – and ranking well in search engines when they do.

To this end, you are probably doing some wonderful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) activities like tagging, and didn’t even know you were making a key mistake.

It’s a good idea to tag your blog posts for relevancy, so search engines and readers can find your content. But often, bloggers are using way too many tags.

One problem with over-tagging is that each tag gets it’s own URL, and if you’ve only used that tag once or twice, it appears to Google and Bing as though your blog isn’t to go-to site for that topic.

Meaning? It is not in a bloggers’ best interest to have a bunch of tags on topics that are not regularly written about. Rather, you should tag the post about the meat of the matter, something you talk about a lot.

An example of this is a post related to a current event. I don’t often (ever!) blog about Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, so I wouldn't tag her in this post even if I weighed in on the foam hand. I will tag the keywords “SEO” and “blogging” however, since I cover those topics a lot.

So tag your posts for content people will continue to search for, and that you blog about often. Crate a list of 20-25 tags that are relevant to your niche, and use those repeatedly. But not – I stress – all together in every past,

Simply put, blog tags do have SEO value. Tags and categories can help organize content and give users and search crawlers easy access to posts. However, over-tagging can be a negative. If your tags are displayed on your blog, they can be a distraction, even look spammy.

So use tags, but use them wisely. For more, listen to Matt Cutts discuss the issue, then download Google’s SEO starter guide PDF.

Check your web metrics: how many visitors to your site are on mobile devices? 10%? 20%? 50%? Smartphone and tablet use is exploding; I’ve heard claims that mobile traffic will overtake desktop as soon as next year.

Responsive design means your one website is coded to responds to the device (laptop, tablet) and browser your site is being viewed on, and adjusts the pieces to give the best user experience – eliminating the need for a separate mobile site.

(If you’re unsure as to which option is best for your business, check out this great article on your options from CMS Wire).

But responsive design isn’t just about fitting your website to different screen sizes, it’s about ensuring the best viewing experience – meaning content, layout, and functionality – for each device and audience. What does this mean?

Content:
Consider your industry or business type: if you are a salon for example, and a user is searching from a mobile, they probably want to find your location or book an appointment. This means that the history of your business and team photos aren’t relevant, so strip it down to show your location map and phone number right off the bat.

Timing of site visits is important here too. If you are a shop or restaurant, and visitors are viewing your site in the morning, they are probably looking to find out what time you open. So feature your business hours prominently, without them having to search, pinch and zoom.

Layout:
Scale down the number of images and columns on your homepage so the look is clean and readable on every device, and ensure the font size is large enough to read without having to zoom.

Functionality:
Smartphone and tablets use touchscreens, and if you’ve ever tried, you’ll know clicking titles on a drop-down menu can be super difficult. Make sure your mobile site has large, clickable tabs or sliding menus for quick and easy navigation.

Many companies have seen significant boost in their key metrics following the implementation of responsive design, especially if they have a transactional site that is converting terribly–or not at all–on mobile devices.

For advice on designing landing pages to be responsive, read this post.

Besides the tried and true email growth tactics, like that sign-up box on your website, there are some other methods that can be used for email acquisition that you may not have yet considered. Here’s a handy list to get your started.

Pop-ups:
Ever visit a website and it quickly fades to present you with a sign-up window? Also called a modal pop-up or lightbox, the pop-up draws attention to your email list when a visitor hits your site. Custom creative (so it doesn’t look spammy) and an incentive can really boost the conversion rate here, for example, “Register and get [exclusive content / coupon]!”

Exclusive content:
Offer fabulous checklists, brochures, or eBooks on your site – and require subscription to download. This also applies to webinars and special events.

Social media:
Many email platforms now offer the ability to integrate with Facebook, Google+ and other networks, offering a quick and seamless way for prospects and customers to sign-up where they already are online.

Mobile:
Mobile is no longer an afterthought. Your prospects are on their phones and tablets, so be sure your subscription methods (pop-ups, forms) are designed for mobile.

And speaking of that sign-up box on your website:
Is it in the same place on every page? Top banner area is best. Make sure it’s easy to see and use, and that the communication subscribers receive are relevant.

To improve sign-up rate overall, keep the form short, and use language that gives your visitor what they really want. A “ free” newsletter? Meh. 10% off? Sign me up!

Yes, another local listing service – but one you shouldn’t pass up! A Google Places for Business listing is a wonderful way to position your small business as a leader in your niche, in your particular location.

While it’s true some business types might do better in a local regard – hair salons and restaurants, for example – each and every business can benefit by connecting with local customers (especially if your competitors aren’t there yet).

Even if you do operate in a highly competitive industry, you have a better chance of reaching a relevant local searcher with Places for Business than trying to compete on a national, or international, search playing field. Happily, your listing will show up on Google’s search, maps, Google+, and mobile devices.

Ready to get started? Great! Submitting your site is easy

Claim your listing by visiting https://www.google.ca/business/placesforbusiness and logging in with your Google account.

After you add information about your business, you’ll need to verify your business with a postcard you’ll receive by mail (makes sense right?).

Finally, you can focus on optimizing your listing:

Fill in every relevant field, including a headline, business description, contact information, hours, and location

Add high-quality photos

Improve the number of reviews you get by making it simple to find your Google+ page (i.e. via your website, your email signature, and through email newsletters)

Use quality keywords throughout your listing

For premium users, Google Places for Business integrates seamlessly with Google Adwords. The “Adwords Express” program allows you to easily create and manage ads targeted at local searchers. And of course, it all ties in nicely with Google+ for even more community engagement.

Mobile search continues to grow at a greater pace than traditional desktop search. This means that marketers should look at a mobile-first approach to their strategies, if they are to capitalize on this growth with their own region.

Let’s look at three methods you can utilize to begin their mobile search strategy for tablet, cell phone and other mobile search users.

1) Take an Responsive Design Approach
Studies indicate that the majority of mobile users close a web page within four seconds if it hasn’t already loaded on their screen. Lack of mobile optimization not only affects audience levels, it also now affects search rankings as well.

Google, for example, is now actively lowering the rankings of sites that are not optimized for a seamless mobile usage experience. Responsive design is device-agnostic, and maximizes load time and functionality.

2) Capitalize on Local Searching
Techniques adopted for traditional web SEO campaigns can still be successful on mobile. Brands must, however, take note of the differences in the way searchers use mobile compared to desktop.

For example, mobile searchers tend to conduct task-oriented searches such as searching for a specific location or product name. By using mobile-oriented copy and keywords, marketers can improve site traffic from mobile.

3) Utilize Email Marketing
As much as 20% of email marketing campaigns are read from mobile phones. That’s because email is easily accessible on smartphones, and users respond quickly to notifications of new mail in their inbox. You can leverage email marketing to drive traffic through links within digital newsletters and other email campaigns.

To be successful, focus on adding mobile-optimized calls to action at the halfway point, and again at the end of emails in order to have the greatest effect on campaign performance.

With mobile technology rising exponentially around the globe, SEO campaigns must begin to focus on the mobile market. Is your website ready?

You might lack the financial resources of your larger counterparts, but smaller organizations can still build momentum with their online campaigns by capitalizing on the advantages of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Without optimization, websites can become lost in a sea of similar sites within a field where visitor numbers are currency and ROI is measured in audience engagement. Building an SEO strategy need not be overwhelming – here are three places to start.

1) Optimize Each Page Title
Add meta titles to your pages to begin the optimization process. This lets search engines know that the website is relevant to a specific keyword or keyphrase (three to four words) being searched for.

It’s important at the inception of any SEO campaign to know which keywords are likely to offer the best returns in terms of clicks. (Not sure which keywords to use? Single Entry Point specializes in improving brand awareness and traffic from search engines.)

2) Begin Link Building
Link building involves driving traffic toward your website through links placed on other sites. The more popular and relevant the website, the higher the value the link has for your site.

Recently, Google has changed the way in which their search algorithm handles specific link-building strategies such as paid links and anchor text, making it slightly more complex for small business owners to generate traffic. Just remember, links shouldn’t seem like they’ve been forced into content online – they should appear natural.

Really, the key is to have strong content that demands attention. Small business owners looking for link-building partnerships could also contact similar organizations to discuss guest-posting opportunities. Other link-building strategies involve submitting sites to online directories, commenting on relevant blog posts, and linking to other blogs within your content.

3) Add Descriptions for Images and Video
The words associated with images and video are key elements to driving traffic to those media on a website. Studies have shown that adding video is a great way to improve search engine rankings. But search spiders cannot retrieve information from media that doesn’t have text connected to it.

This means that site owners must be as descriptive as possible when adding captions and alt tags to their media content. It’s an SEO strategy that has helped thousands of small business achieve the high rankings that propel them to success online.

SEO is the great online leveler. It allows small businesses to compete with large multinationals. It also gives proactive firms the opportunity to engage their audience in a way that traditional marketing simply cannot match.

Small businesses following a best-practice based approach to SEO can achieve strong marketing campaign momentum and high level visibility online with a sound SEO strategy.
