How it works
Consumers set up an online account at Serve.com or through a smartphone app. Funds can be added from bank accounts, debit cards, credit and charge cards, or other Serve accounts. Customers can use those accounts to send and receive money to friends, pay bills and make purchases online. Serve bridges online and offline commerce – each customer will be issued a Serve reloadable prepaid card linked to their Serve account that can be used at any merchant or ATM that accepts American Express cards.

Unlike traditional debit card accounts, Serve offers users the ability to easily create, manage, and specify sub-accounts for their friends, family members or colleagues. Sub-accounts are linked to the master account and allow users to set spending profiles for everything from children’s allowances to dog walker fees.

The Serve platform evolved from technology obtained through the acquisition of Revolution Money in early 2010.

Serve is available immediately to anyone in the U.S. and is expected to launch into other international markets over the coming year. Partnerships

Android Developers has announced the launch of in-app billing for developers and app users on the Android ecosystem.

What this system does is allows developers to create apps that utilize in-app purchases. In turn, when users are using those apps, they can choose to pay and upgrade or add new features as they are released.

This also opens up an alternative way to try before you by apps in that you can offer a cut down app to users and then when they pay, the extra functions are added on.

A few requirements and help documents have been created such as the need for security and details on how you can test in app purchasing (if you are a developer).

It’s been a long time coming, the Android Market finally support In-app Billing. Users can now buy virtual goods inside Android apps, just like their friends on iOS.

Google announced that it would be coming last week to give developers time to prepare, and some of them have. Apps like Tap Tap Revenger and Comics by Comixology which rely on buying goods in the apps are ready on day one. Finally Comixology users on Android can buy comics straight from their phones without having to navigate the website (though they obviously still can).

For users, refunds are still possible with In-app Billing, though it is handled through the app and not the Android Market. Everything else should be the same.

For developers, Google takes the same 30 percent out of in-app purchases. That’s a good thing, however, because it means that free apps can now rely on in-app purchases to make money. Hooking users on a free app and making them pay for more content should be much easier than convincing them to pay for the experience up-front. Hopefully this will make Android a bit more profitable for developers.
