It feels like it’s been forever since the site has even crossed my mine. I was browsing around on Amazon.com just a minute ago and the SRR blog popped into my head. I thought I was brush off the dust and make a quick and pointless post.

Nothing much going on with me. I’m still trying to kickstart some things with myself and figure out my own workflow for getting things done. It’s coming along slowly but that’s better than nothing. I picked up a Moleskin and started keeping a To-Do list of the simplest things. You know like “Wipe butt after going #2″ or “Remember to pee in the shower while water is running”. Nothing is more embarassing than your wife wondering why there’s dried yellow spots in the bath tube. The list has been going awesome! Totally awesome.

What else? What else?

In early March I went to the orientation meeting for Raleigh’s public access station, RTN. I met this guy Tony there who’s in the process of trying to get some comic and animations off the ground. I told him about some of the stuff I’ve done and we hit it off. We’re now working on some projects together, one of them being a short horror film called Mary. I’ll definitely be posting more about the stuff we’re doing. But that’s pretty much it for now.

There are a few other things I want to post about but think they all deserve their own posts. I’ll get around to those soon…maybe sometime this year. Hopefully. Some of the things I want to post about: Atlanta Supercross, Jax Supercross, Canon XH-1A, Suzuki RM-250 Project, Editing, Shooting Guns, Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy (Yes it is).

Something to look forward to.

You may have noticed some changes to sirrobbierob.com. It’s that time of year where I get bored of things and need to change something up.

The biggest change is the site design. I got tired of looking at the maroon vomit of the last theme. Since I’m not really in the mood to work on a theme from the ground up I decided to use one from WooThemes. I put together a simple logo and poof…finished. Nice and simple I think.

The other change was getting rid of Entrecard. For the past couple weeks my interest in the application has been dying off. As much as I like having people reading the random crap that comes out of my mind, I’m don’t want to over load the site with ads. This isn’t something I’m trying to make money at, it would be nice but still isn’t my goal. Plus I don’t think there is much money to make from ads on a diarrhea posting. Then came the recent Entrecard announcement and the stuff that played out on their forums. Graham, founder of Entrecard, has proven time and time again the kind of person he is. To put it in the nicest words I know how, the guy is a douche bag. No matter what positive things I was getting out of Entrecard, I’m not going to support and promote a tool (referring to Graham the tool, not the Entrecard tool) like that. I fully intend to continue supporting the blogs and friends I’ve made through the service. Hopefully, you will continue reading this blog.

Those are the major changes with the site. I did make some other smalls things but nothing worth mentioning.

The title really doesn’t have much to do with anything except my like for randomly thinking about 80’s musical lyrics.

Ooh ooh ooh yeah

There isn’t much going on in my little world. I’ve been trying to climb out of this rut that I got myself into, only the harder I try the deeper I get. What I’m finding is that once you let negativity into your thought process it becomes a cancer and takes over. From that point on no matter how hard you try, the negativity will corner you in the shower and have it’s way with you. I refuse to let negativity corn hole me.

I’ve developed a nice little tool (Ha! little…tool) that helps me fight off the negative thoughts. When I feel them coming I stop what I’m doing and scream “I am no longer your bitch anymore. I…I say who gets to corn hole me. Not you, you bastard!”. This helps me push those feelings away and it invites the positive thoughts in.

Seriously, thanks to some medication I’m able to see some light at the end of the tunnel. To say it’s been a nice departure from the normal doom and gloom would be an understatement. With the fog lifting, I’ve been able to get an idea where I want to be in the grand scheme of things…professionally speaking (typing) that is. I won’t go into what I want to do right now. I tend to lose some steam on these types of things when I let them out of my head too soon. Hopefully, I will be able to stay focused on the goals and actually achieve them. Man, having a sense of achievement would be an awesome feeling, one that I haven’t felt in awhile. Bring it on!

There are some things I’ve been meaning to post about and I will get those done this week.

Encountering a rusty gas tank during a bike build can take the wind out of your sails in a heartbeat. Well maybe not for everyone, but for beginners it’s a huge obstacle. pipeworx over at the Jockey Journal forums has posted a great thread on a gas tank rehab.

Well, I have a client that is having me build them a motorcycle and I ran into some problems on the tank today. I thought that since I was having to repair the tank that I would share a little and possibly help someone else out. First, let me apologize for the blury pics as everything was taken with my cell phone. The tank is an old banana wassel. I do not know if they repop these but even if one could be found it would need to have the tunnel modified for the frame that is being used. Here is a pic of what I started with, looks like a clean vintage tank.

As a fan of the Honda CM400 series, I’m frustrated by the lack of builds I come across on the web. I think it’s a great bike for people who haven’t chopped a bike before, and even people that have chopped before. They are super cheap and easy to find on craigslist.

If I had to guess why the lack of support for the bikes I would have to say, it’s the lack of factory and aftermarket parts. Lack of parts usually means fabrication is needed or shelling out cash for someone else to do the work.

The cool thing is, when you do find a CM build on the web, because of the lack of parts, these people are forced to use their imagination. They are forced to come up with their own solutions and not just opening a catalog and busting out the credit card. So when I come across a build I get pretty pumped and try to follow it from start to finish.

Scotty Dont’s CM400E build over at the MassDriven forums, is one of the build I’ve been following. He took a 1980 Honda CM400E and created a nice “Cafe/Bobber Bastard Child”.

GLPICR024W The program did not complete successfully. View earlier error messages for information about the exact error.

In order to get more information about the real cause of the failure, I would need to run an ASCII trace of the idsicrt. This will allow me to see the processes interaction with the operating system. In these interactions I should be able to see which step is failing and a more details error message.

Running an ASCII trace

1. Prior to running the idsicrt debug, I need to enable ldtrc. This is what turns on tracing for the processes.

ldtrc on

2. Now I need to recreate the error. I re-run the idsicrt with the -d and -b flags.

idsicrt -I idsinst -e password4seed -p 389 -s 636 -a 3538 -c 3539 -l /home/idsinst -t idsinst -d 65535 -b /tmp/idsicrt.out

The
-d 65535
turns on the debug and will provide me the most detailed information about the error.

The
-b /tmp/idsicrt.out
is telling the command where I want the detailed output written to. In this case I’m writing the log to /tmp/idsicrt.out.

3. Turn off tracing

ldtrc off

Note: Not turning this off can cause problems with the operation of your ldap server.

Reviewing the Trace Output

Reviewing the trace file for the first time can be overwhelming, as it contains a lot of information. What I would suggest is searching the file for the error message. In my case the error message is ‘GLPCTL019E Failed to catalog database instance node: ‘idsinst’. The failure might have occurred because the system was not set up correctly before using the tool.’ After locating the error, work your way up in the trace. The cause of the failure should be close by.

In my case, the real error message is only 10 lines above the generic message.

GLPCTL017I Cataloging database instance node: 'idsinst'.

GLPCTL019E Failed to catalog database instance node: 'idsinst'. The failure might have occurred because the system was not set up correctly before using the tool.

Now, I have a error message that points me in a better direction. I can see from the SQL1092N that their is a permission problem somewhere.

Reviewing the documentation for IBM Tivoli Directory Server 6.1, I find that the ‘root’ user is required to be a member of the SYSADM group for the DB2 instance. This is because of the way the idsicrt and idsxinst tools create the DB2 instance.

After I added the root user to the SYSADM group for the instance the idsicrt successfully create my instance. From that point I was able to continue configuring the ITDS environment I was setting up.

In some lab environments it’s impossible to use VNC to access remote machines due to security practices(ports being blocked, BSOs, etc). If your job requires you to access those machines pretty frequently this can be a huge headache. Thankfully, we can work around this and tunnel VNC using SSH. In my experiences SSH is almost always available.

This process basically relies on port forwarding, so use good judgement and be careful of firewalls - they may impact your ability to do this successfully (although for me, Zonelabs Integrity Client did not have problems).

SSH can allow you to forward a local port to a destination port and vice versa. Since VNC generally uses the 5900 range (by default on Windows, and usually 5901, 5902, etc on *NIX), you can forward those ports to other ports locally. In my environment I have to go to a jump point server, and then from the jump point to my target server. For you in may not be this difficult.

I’m using a Windows XP machine with cygwin installed. I haven’t tried using putty, so I can vouch for it.

Open a command line terminal:

ssh -g -L 5902:donner:5900 -C administrator@robstestserver.com

Again, the trick in my environment is I have to jump from the target host to the jump point, and from the jump point to my local machine. The
-g
and the
-L
allow me to do this. The
-C
is for compression.

Now open up a VNC Viewer and enter the following and you should see the contents of your target system in the VNC window.:

localhost:5902

In the example I gave above, it tells SSH to connect with Compression to robstestserver.com (the jump point server) as administrator, and then once there forward port 5900 on machine donner (which is defined in robstestserver’s hosts file) to port 5902. Then the VNC viewer on your machine is opened to port 5902 and uses that for I/O to port 5900 on donner.

This is a pretty nifty little trick to getting around the sometimes painful lab security.

If you have any questions or problems post them in the comments.

I’ve been working on my test AIX 5.3 system trying to get Apache2 and PHP installed. My ultimate goal is too get Apache2 and PHP…

I’ve been working on my test AIX 5.3 system trying to get Apache2 and PHP installed. My ultimate goal is too get Apache2 and PHP setup
so I can install Drupal and start testing it with a DB2 back end. If I can get it working and running stable, I will move all of my test web sites over to this machine.

After some trial and error, here is how I got Apache2 and PHP5 compiled on my AIX 5.3 TL5 machine.

Prerequisites

1. Make sure you have plenty of free space in the following filesystems.

/usr
/opt
/home
/tmp

2. Download the latest code available.

Apache Web Server 2.2.2 source code - link

GNU C compiler version 4 for AIX 5.3 - link

GCC library for AIX 5.3 - link

PHP 5.1 source code - link

XML support – IBM’s AIX Toolbox for Linux Applications is back rev’d. Use these instead

libxml2 2.6.21
libxml2-devel

General tools from IBM AIX Toolbox Download Page

LEX flex-2.5

XML support expat-1.95.7

Compression library zlib-1.2.2

Compression develoment zlib-devel-1.2.2

Compression library bz2-1.0.2-3

jpeg support libjpeg-6b-6

jpeg support development libjpeg-devel-6b-6

png support libpng-1.2.1-6

png development libpng-devel-1.2.1-6

Pixmap xpm-3.4k

Pixmap development xpm-devel-3.4k

Freetype2 fonts freetype2-2.1.7-2

Freetype2 fonts development freetype2-devel-2.1.7-2

Gettext support gettext-0.10.40

Any other libraries you might need for Apache or PHP

Install all the RPM files

3. Install
libm.a
from the AIX CDROM
4. Install the compiler and library

rpm -Uvh gcc-4*.rpm
rpm -Uvh libgcc-4*rpm

5. Make sure you’re running AIX 5.3 TL5. They are reported the following steps don’t work on anything earlier than that.

Compiling Apache2 using GCC

1. Uncompress the Apache Web Server source into your home directory

# gunzip httpd-2*tar.gz
# tar xvf httpd-2*.tar
# cd httpd*

2. Build the configuration file enabling shared object

# ./configure

3. Compile the server

# slibclean
# make

4. Install the server (/usr/local/apache2)

# make install

Compiling PHP using GCC

1. Uncompress the PHP source code file and untar the file

# gunzip php*tar.gz
# tar xvf php*.tar
# cd php-5.1.4

2. Build the configuration file enabling shared objects

# export PATH=/opt/freeware/bin:$PATH

# ./configure –prefix=/usr/local –with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs –with-config-file-path=/usr/local/apache2/conf –with-gd –with-pear –with-gettext –with-mime-magic –with-zlib-dir=/opt/freeware/lib –enable-shared –disable-static –with-png –with-zlib –with-bz2 –with-xml –with-jpeg-dir=/opt/freeware/lib –with-png-dir=/opt/freeware/lib –with-xpm-dir=/opt/freeware/lib –with-freetype-dir=/opt/freeware/lib

3. Compile PHP with the following command:

# make

NOTE: There will be compiler warnings about pointers type mismatches. The can be disregarded.
4. Install PHP with the following two commands

# cp .libs/libphp5.so /usr/local/apache2/modules
# cp php.ini-recommended /usr/local/apache2/conf/php.ini

Configuring Apache2 with PHP

1. Stop Apache2

# /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl -k stop

2. Edit
/usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf
, adding the following at the end

LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
DirectoryIndex index.php

3. Edit the
/usr/local/apache2/conf/php.ini
file

Change the php variable:

;date.timezone =

to reflect your timezone

4. Restart Apache2

# /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl -k start

5. Now test PHP with Apache2

Create a test web page

# vi /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/phpinfo.php

<?php phpinfo() ?>

Open the page in your browser: http://localhost/phpinfo.php

Verify the php data

Delete phpinfo.php

# rm /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/phpinfo.php

I wanted to take a minute and thank all of the readers that come by my site. I get so caught up with things that I haven’t been showing any love to you guys and gals. A BIG thank you to all of you.

I also want to send a HUGE thank you out to the entrecarders that have written recommendations for the site. Every time I get a recommendation I get giddy like a little kid. If my mom lived closer I would probably show them to her like I would when I got an A on a report card…Yeah I’m guessing on that one. I don’t remembering getting any A’s. te he.

I know it’s not a lot but I want to share the recommendations for everyone else and give these guys and gals some link love.

100% Canucklehead approved! Not something to be taken lightly. To say this gent is kinda blogosphere royalty is akin to saying Amy Winehouse kinda like the taste of crack … - Life with Canucklehead

An interesting site .I enjoyed reading the posts and the images are great too.So I highly recommend this one…10 out of 10,for sure.Keep up the awesome stuff - Jesse Blogs It All (Blog no longer exists :()

I don’t want to show any favoritism but I will. This one’s my favorite.

You’ve got to see why SIR ROBBIE ROB got an extremely horrible eyesight! I had quite a good laugh reading some of his posts. I admit I am a lurker most of the time and this blog is certainly one of my hangouts. It’s definitely worth every minute being here. You’ve got to see it for yourself! Adding to this blog’s appeal is the zero percentage of declining advert requests. Quick approval on requests and I just love to advertise again and again in this blog! - Lainy’s Musing

I can’t thank all of you enough. Mucho gracias.
