I live in Canada – where Boxing Day is the holiday after the holiday. It’s a bizarre concept if you ask me. Many people have spent hours in malls in November and December and spent way too much money – only to continue on Boxing Day. I think it would be interesting to track Boxing Day purchases and see if people really do save much. I’m pretty sure whatever they’re buying isn’t anything they really need – just something to indulge in.

We went to YW IN Excellence last week. It was a new experience for me. I don’t remember attending that when I was a young girl, nor when I served in YW years ago, so I didn’t know what to expect. I had high hopes though that I’d see projects and hear experiences of girls accomplishing great things. We did hear from a lot of girls – but the message that came through loud and clear was how these girls really looked forward to their roles as wives and mothers and how Personal Progress was preparing them for that. Why does the focus so often get funnelled into marriage and motherhood? To me there seems to be so much more to the program! Where does faith, divine nature, individual worth, knowledge, choice and accountability, good works and integrity mean marriage and motherhood? I am far from being a feminist who hates men and marriage and motherhood – but this really bugs me about the young women’s program. You sure don’t hear the young men dreamily discussing these kinds of things! They focus on being righteous men, worth priesthood holders, and leaders. Why is it the girls don’t seem to get this? Of course, there are some who do – but the louder message seems to be for them to have this one focus. One girl even said that she heard that boys have been told to only date girls who have their YW medallion on a chain around their neck, and soon she will be turning 16, so she wanted to up her chances of getting dates.

*sigh*

A friend of mine summed it up quite well. She said: “And it’s not really in our control. What the goal of being a wife is, really is a goal to date, rate, hope and wait. It’s a “goal” for someone else’s feelings. Until you “accomplish” that goal you can’t even more on to the second goal –which, in turn, is dependent on biology. ”

How do we get these girls to have a bigger vision?

It’s a sure sign of my old age: talking about the good old days and all!

I spent a fair number of years in a young single adult ward, and have thought a lot lately about those years. I remember often hearing high councilmen recall their years in the same wards I was attending, with great fondness. They would often say that the friends made during those years would become life long friends. I have had a number of experiences lately at church meetings and other activities and meetings outside the church where I’ve run into friends from my YSA years and have found myself agreeing with that those high councilmen. Those are great friendships that I hope to maintain for years to come. I loved my years in the YSA ward. I think one of the brilliant things about a YSA ward is the innovative thinking and the ability to have fun. Thesevideos take me back to these days!

Amazon.com currently has a book for sale that teaches people how to be better pedophiles. They’ve refused to remove it. Please sign this petition and pass it on to your friends and family. We’re hoping if we put enough pressure on Amazon that they will back off their statement and remove the book.
