I decided to make a fresh start with a new template, and lost my hand-coded blogroll & some other stuff. I have it saved somewhere but it could be a while before I have time to devote to restoring it. So sorry to those who are no longer there, but once I do check and verify your sites are still around I'll put them back up. I just had a lot of dead links and this was the quickest and easiest solution. Plus, I like the template!

Many years ago, I was alone, walking down US1 barefoot, with no money and no ID. I was about to walk into a dangerous part of town, when a cop pulled over and picked me up, saying he was afraid something would happen to me if he didn’t. At that point, I began to babble incoherently.

Since I had no ID and did not live nearby, he felt he had no other choice, so he delivered me to the nearest mental hospital. I continued to babble until the intake counselor stopped me, ripping up the paper he’d been writing on, and told me that if anyone else had seen or heard what I’d been saying I would be locked up in there for life. His opinion? I was an artist in crisis, and just needed to sort things out.

Shortly thereafter, they took my temperature: it was 103.5°F, I had the flu. When they realized how sick I was, they made arrangements to transport me to the nearest General Hospital. While I was awaiting transport, two of the employees were talking in the hallway about church on Sunday, so I asked them to pray with me. They looked at me like I had just arrived from Mars, then ignored me and continued their chitchat.

Desolate, I called out to God, and immediately I felt the warmth of His love, and the sensation of being hugged by Jesus. Many might say that it was a hallucination from the fever, but I know it was real – and I’ll never forget it.

I may have neglected to mention my position as Broward County Special Needs Parents Examiner (I know, it's a mouthful) at examiner.com but I have been doing it for a couple of months now and really enjoy what I'm doing. I just realized that I never posted a link to the new website, built to counter the message of Autism Speaks. Nutshell version:

Autism Speaks produced a video that those of us in the Autism Community find to be very disturbing in that it has the potential to generate a huge amount of prejudice against us and hatred towards us.

iamautism.org contains videos and links that tell more of the story. Instead of edited footage of autistic people combined with sinister-sounding music and voiceover, you will hear our own voices... including the voices of the nonverbal who use assistive technology to communicate.

Instead of providing the assistive technology that would enable thousands of our brethren to tell us what THEY truly want, Autism Speaks presumes to speak for them whilst keeping them from being able to communicate.

This is an organization which has taken in multiple millions of dollars, tens of millions annually... yet spends less than ONE million on actually directly helping autistic people and their families. Their money goes primarily to highly-paid staff members, legal fees, advertising - and research into genetic testing to eliminate us by preventing us from being born in the future.

Conversely, the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network seeks to empower our population and above all to let the REAL voices of our people be heard.

DON'T SUPPORT THE EUGENICS OF AUTISM SPEAKS.

Review of the movie "Adam"

Asperger's Syndrome is a condition on the Autism Spectrum which renders people socially awkward. Adam is a movie which offers a glimpse into the life of a young adult Aspie (person with Asperger's) whose father has passed away, leaving him to live alone in a New York City building. He meets a new neighbor and they develop a relationship, but they are from two different worlds and her parents are not kind about pointing this out. Parents who, as the story reveals, have problems of their own.

Despite the obvious stereotypes depicted, the story has warmth and substance... enough so that some have wondered if there might be a sequel. Overall the story revealed the inner richness of this young man and how undervalued and overlooked he felt as well as the stigma that others can place upon someone who is different. His kind and tender heart, extensive knowledge of subjects which pertained to his Special Interests, and his willingness to learn were endearing and memorable.

In the end, I would like to see a different outcome - so I am in the boat with those hoping for a follow-up.

I've been keeping a relatively well-prioritized "rolling" list the past several days and find myself working hard and ending the days with more of a sense of accomplishment than I did prior to utilizing this method. We'll see if it sticks or slides... time will tell.

As of August 3, so far so good. I just take anything that I don't get done today and transfer it to other days... I've been much more productive and less forgetful.
