Making a Big Bright Splash with Project Jelly

The Ultimate summer shoe is back. Hands up who had a pair of these in the eighties? We certainly did, beautiful sparkly ones that were on our feet every step of the summer adventures. Worn as much around the playground, garden and fields beyond as they were on the pebbly beaches of our holidays.

We're thrilled that these are back in fashion and back on little feet albeit now our children's rather than ours. I'd happily give up being a grown up and hand over my car keys and mascara to be six years old and wearing these skipping about this summer.
With two delicious colours to choose from there's Watermelon Rocks, a bright cherry red with neon green sole, and, Raspberry Pink Mivi, a sparkly pink style shimmering with glitter.

These shoes look as good with tights and ankle socks as they do bare foot which is just dandy as we know once the kids get hold of these they'll never want to wear anything else.

An enterprise founded by Natalie Collier, the limited edition jellies are made by the original UK makers of the eighties jelly sandals, Juju Footwear. Waterproof, flexible and loved by kids there's no better reason to be donning a pair this summer. But, if you need a little encouragement then know that this is not only great British design but that it's also combined with a fundraising edge with 25% of the profits going to MENCAP, the charity for the voice of learning disability.

Monday Makery - Prize Pinboard

With another Birthday Party approaching and of course the girls wanting to stick to their love of all things circus we've had a weekend crafting for the preparations. We've been busy decorating party hats, and making yet another photobooth (pictures will come soon) along with all its masks.

We created this 'Prizes' board for the party but to make sure it lasts beyond the special day we created it so that it can be used as the girls own noticeboard that they can put pictures and postcards on, hang their invites and all those oh so special things that kids love!

Here's what you'll need:

cork-board / piece of light plywood. we up-cycled out kitchen one cork-board.
paint - spray paint is best.
wooden clothes pegs
glue
glitter

Here's the how:

Spray paint the front of the board, if you want to create a pattern use masking tape to hide where you don't want the layer of paint to go. Leave to dry.
Now for the pegs; brush one side of a peg with pva glue and sprinkle with glitter. Put to one side and continue with your other pegs. Leave to dry.
Once both the cork-board and the glittery pegs are dry you can finish it off by adhering the pegs to the board. Use a good all purpose super glue, this board will get a lot of use and those pegs need to be firmly fixed.

it's ready to hang

Our prize bags will be filled with little jokes as well as sweets, temporary tattoo's, whistles and bouncing balls.

We couldn't wait to get our hands on this brilliant revival of the classic fruit crate, and now we're happy to announce that the Baines & Fricker fruit crate is now in the boutique showing off one of Britain's great creative talents.

Brighton based Baines & Fricker are a husband and wife team bringing creative, innovative products to the design market. Snapped up by the likes of Liberty and Paul Smith their unique designs and individual stamp are being appreciated and are already having a big influence on how we choose to style our interior space.

It is no wonder that Steve Baines and Eliza Fricker's collaboration is such a great success; Baines has has a background in furniture making and Fricker illustration and screen-printing. Together their utilitarian approach to design influenced by a wide range of elements; early modernist through to post war utility furniture, industrial architecture and the even the more mundane and everyday such as street signs, their inspiration is full of the often overlooked aspects of our heritage. They believe that things for the home should have longevity and they use this philosophy when creating their pieces, keeping British heritage at the heart of it all.

Taking on the fruit crate using strong lines and saturated colour these 'nutility' pieces are made with birch ply sourced in the UK and made in their workshop on the south coast of England.

The fruit crates are brilliantly versatile you can use them in as many ways as you'll find things to store inside. Used for storage in any room in the house you can sort them into existing shelves, stack them up or mount them on the wall.

Monday Makery - Miniature Circus

Roll Up! roll Up! Watch the daring death defying mice jump through the ring of fire!

Celebrating all things circus the girls have asked me to create something for the Maileg mice whilst they await the arrival of their circus tent and circus troupe.
A little rummage around in our crafts cupboard found some wooden cotton reels, pipe cleaners and red felt to create a ring of fire for the most daring of mice.

Here's what you'll need:

a pipe cleaner
cotton reel
red felt
colouring pens or paints
fabric glue
scissors

Here's how:

Cut a strip of felt 3cm smaller than the length of your pipe cleaner and about 5cm wide
Using fabric glue, glue the pipe cleaner to the felt so that it sits in the centre and has 1.5cm free at either end, fold over the felt and press firmly
Now cut into the fabric to create very rough triangles of various sizes to give a flaming appearance.
Decorate your cotton reel.
Bend the flaming pipe cleaner into a hoop shape and push the two ends together inside the hole of the cotton reel.

you're now ready to perform your daring ring of fire act.

Monday Makery - Invisible Ink

Great for games of espionage and its clandestine intelligence operations, playing private eye with its hush hush hidden covert messages, for secretly marking the X on a treasure map, magic shows, wizardry and even little love notes passed between one another.

Here's what you'll need:

lemon
q-tip
paper
a secret message

Here's how:

Squeeze the juice of a lemon into a bowl or cup
dip the q-tip into the juice and use it as 'ink' to write your message, a fine paintbrush would work too.
To see the message hold the paper agianst a heat source.

Here's why:

Lemon juice is acidic, the acid in the juice weakens paper and stays there when it dries. When the paper is held near a heat source the acid will burn faster than the paper and as it heats up it turns brown enabling you to see the message that has been written.

Milk, white wine, apple juice and orange juice work too, why not try other things; see what else you could use to make invisible ink.

Alternative:

Great for younger children; use a white crayon or even a candle on white paper to draw a picture or write a message and have your child discover the hidden picture using coloured crayons or paint.

Qubis Haus - Rocking to the Rooftops

The dual designed Qubis Haus is a multifunctional piece for the home. Part coffee table part dolls house its a piece that will be played with and around and used by all the family. The transformational design invites play; with sliding walls made from wood and perspex the 'designer' can arrange the rooms and alternate the layout. The house itself with its beautiful simple lines is made with solid birch ply wood lending itself to a sleek and contemporary aesthetic.

It is a beautiful piece that invites both a pot of tea shared with friends as much as the curious child who's imagination can play amidst the conversations around them, bringing family together in a creatively shared space.

Collections of magnetic furniture that click together to create tables, beds chairs and lamps and much more have been made from locally grown sustainable oak and cleverly hand crafted into varying shapes and sizes, they snap together with the help of embedded magnets magically transforming them into piecs of furniture. Monday Makery - Circus Creative

Come one come all to the Cirque de Sitting Room

With daughters who want to join the circus, who love nothing more than acrobatics and daring feats; walking imaginary tightropes dressed in tutus and striped tights, jumping hoops, stilt walking, grand introductory speeches standing high on stools, and hilarious attempts at juggling, it was obviously going to become the theme for next birthday. So, in preparation for Oona's 4th Birthday we got busy creating a circus....all whilst she was sleeping.
With balloons, a tightrope, a balance board, dressing up box, a flaming ring of fire and strongman weights it's all the daring fun of the fair with its vibrant colours and promise of performance. The girls woke up, ran away with the circus and were back in time for birthday cake!

Tightrope Walk

Imagine you're far up in the sky walking the wire as you navigate the tightrope.

Here's what you'll need:

1 wooden plank measuring 160cm L - 10cm W - 5cm D
2 wooden blocks 50cm L - 8cm W - 5cm D
MT tape for decorating

Here's how:

Decorate the large piece of wood using MT tape making sure you cover all the corners. Create a stripe down the middle of the length of wood to give it the illusion of the tightrope.
Decorate the 2 blocks with matching contrasting colours.
Set the blocks under each end of the board and you're ready to go!

Use props, like an umbrella held high for theatrical effect!

Balance Board

How long can you balance for. Try to keep the edges from touching the floor as you thrill the audience and challenge others to do the same with the daredevil balance board.

Here's what you'll need:

wooden board: 65 cm L, 22 cm W, 3cm D
MT tape
pool noodle / foam strips
cutting knife/blade
wooden pole / heavy duty cardboard roll: 60cm L, Diameter 6.5cm

Here's how:

Decorate your wooden board with strips of MT tape.
Measure 2 lengths of foam to match the width of the board and cut into it giving a slot of about an inch deep.
Slide on the foam to the edges of the board.
decorate the wooden / cardboard pole
set the board onto the centre of the pole and be ready to keep your cool as you try to stay balanced.

Strongman Weight Lifting

Who is the strongest of them all. Can you lift the wight above your head and prove to all that you've got the strength of a lion.

Here's what you'll need:

wooden pole / length of bamboo 90cm L, 2.5cm diameter
2 balloons
marker pen

Here's how:

decorate a thin wooden pole or length of bamboo with decorative tape.
adhere a balloon either end
using the marker pen write the weight of each balloon....... can you lift 50kg?

Ring of Fire

Would you dare take the leap with this death defying act and jump through a ring of burning fire. Roly-poly through the ring of flames and gracefully land upon a cushioned floor.

Here's what you'll need:

Hula hoop; the bigger the better, ours has a diameter of 94cm.
red tissue paper

Here's how:

Layer several sheets of tissue paper one on top of the other and fold in half.
Cutting away from the folded edge, cut out a flame shape (a wriggly triangle). Repeat along the folded line until you have as many as you need.
Open up each doubled flame, fold over the edge of the hula hoop and use double sided sticky tape (or fold over ordinary sticky tape to create doubled sided) and tape the inside of the flames together securing it to the hoop.
Hang by attaching a length of strong string to either side to a high point on either side of the room, or if you're unable to hang have someone hold it an inch or two off the floor.

If you can't bring the circus to you; create it!

Monday Makery - Paper Cup Shooters

This weekend we've needed some quick, surefire and silly fun. These paper cup shooters are the closest thing to instant gratification of the diy craft variety.
Pinging mini marshmallows and later, once those were either lost or eaten, screwed up secret messages (I know where mum keeps the chocolate biscuits), and woollen pom pons we made on a fork.

These would make great party games, silly afternoon fun and as they're super easy to make you'll be playing a game of sitting room ping-pong in minutes.

Here's what you'll need:

paper cups (plastic ones will crinkle and crush)
balloon
scissors

here's how:

cut the bottom of the paper cup out.
cut the rounded end of a balloon off.
tie a knot in the end of the balloon, as you would if it were blown up.
stretch the balloon over the open bottom of the paper cup.

To shoot: hold the cup, pull back the balloon and release!

*caution* this shooter can be pretty powerful. NEVER shoot towards people's faces, bottoms I feel are fine, but NEVER faces!

Thank you for all your messages since this last post about our Mama. Her strength of spirit is shining through and soon we will be all together at home surrounded by flowers and chatter and our hearts full of love.

To all Mamas and their Mamas and Mamas before them, and all Mamas-to-be too...

Everyday as a Mother is a celebration of life.

For our Mama who is....
a woman who makes magic. She is the comforting shawl that keeps me warm, who turns matchboxes into miniature chests of drawers for dolls houses, who can turn tears into laughter and a rainy day into one of the brightest days I can remember. She is the smell of Nivea hand cream, the sound of 3 silver bangles joined together that make music as she moves. She is my friend, my mentor, my constant inspiration, a woman worthy of words i will never be able to find. A woman i admire and can only hope to have inherited part of her strength, her beauty, her sense of adventure and zest for life. She not only gave me the person I am but she gave me you too. She gave me my sisters my brother my untangled love and friendship that is our family, and even though I mother her now it is because she has taught me.

When I planned a Mothers Day blog series, our Mama was well. Carrying, marching, making, caring and being the leader of our family. Our Mama is and does everything. Energy, independence and resourcefulness is what she is. Without any reservation or hesitation, she gives.

A few weeks ago we 3 sisters became Mamas carers. The roles have reversed so fast and now our Mama needs mothering. All the love she has given is flowing back to her from friends and family. It is our turn to feed her nutritious meals, make sure she's comfortable, fluff her pillows, plait her hair and bring her flowers. It is our turn to hold her hand and hide our worries. It is our turn to stand tall.

Three Trees Quilt

Mama has made 4 children and in turn 6 grandchildren. Hers is a body to be celebrated, for sure. But her body has aged, as bodies do. The reproductive part of her body has fulfilled its role and is now ill and causing pain. Tomorrow we will take her to hospital for an operation. A 'procedure' that marks, in a way, the end of the youth of her body. We will nurse her through the recovery and see her back to health again, just as the first blossom, in the knowledge that this part of her journey of Motherhood is fragile. We will cherish and celebrate each moment, as each new season.

So, here I divert from the planned 'Mothers Day Goodies' blog series and invite you to celebrate Motherhood with us - in all its' joy, beauty, pain and magnificence. Motherhood IS magnificent.

On a Summer Breeze

Like Tuesdays child the Hucklebones girl is full of grace. She explores the world around her with curiosity and wonder as she takes in the sights and sounds of summer. Spring / Summer 2013 takes inspiration from the elegant beauty found in nature. The soft warm breeze on a sun drenched day, the lightness of a dandelion-seed being carried high, the ruffle of a feather or turn of a pinwheel.

The seasonal print evokes this mood depicting the sweep of starlings as they dance through the evening sky. Gusts of petals waltz across silken dresses and pop coloured blossoms are thrown merrily into the dance. 'On a Summer Breeze' celebrates that wonderful lightness that not only lifts the mood but puts a spring in our step as the season moves into summer.

Mama's In The Kitchen

Perhaps it's the time of year, maybe because I've been asked for ideas for Mothers day gifts as well as looking for something for my own but lately I've been pouring over recipe books, looking for that ever trusted collection of recipes to add to my kitchen reportoire and I have to share my 2 favourite books I'm adding to my already bursting shelves as well as my favourite kitchen pieces I just have to add to my wish list this mothers day.

The first is The Little Paris Kitchen by Rachel Khoo (pictured above). Likened to Amelie by Elizabeth Day of wrote in the Observer last summer ' an idealised version of what we imagine an English girl living in Paris might be like. Think of a cross between Amélie and an excitable Lizzy Bennet.' I've had my eye on this book for a little while now and having fallen in love with her style, I'm excited about trying her recipes. The second is Lunch in Paris by Elizabeth Bard. A New York Times best-seller is promising to be a good read. 'I slept with my French husband halfway through our first date' - the first line to this book which is part memoir, part recipe book and very much a love story it's a tale of falling in love, with someone, with food and of course Paris.

Though not the most amazing cook, I do aspire to be (better at least), and I do throw myself into it with a passion and one thing life has taught me is you don't have to be a great chef to bring out the best in a dish, its about an appreciation of food, its fresh unprocessed flavours, food that the whole family can enjoy. Its the passion for cooking and quite often the passion comes from those things around me, the things that inspire me, the things that make cooking fun, a new recipe to try, colours, that big platter just begging to be piled high with deliciousness that makes me wanna grab my measuring ducks and spice tin, besides isn't it a whole lot easier to put your heart into something if it has a little and oh so colourful soul.

Eat Me!

There's a recipe I hunger for on chilly afternoons, though I seldom have all the ingredients when my stomach growls for it it's one that makes me happy to wait until a fresh croissant has turned a little stale. Doesn't sound like the best start to a recipe does it. But trust me, or rather trust Nigella Lawson, this is a simple dish everyone will love. Snapping a picture on my phone before it was all guzzled was the hardest part!

I blame the weather and mammalian instinct for my craving, with the sun shining and a chill still in the air we've been making the most of the light in the day, wrapping up warm and enjoying what feels like Springs rehearsal. But nothing beats coming home to make something delicious and comforting and this is what, for me, is the perfect comfort, warming food; caramel croissant pudding. Sophia and Oona love making it too, or rather the science of it, so I'm not singled out in the kitchen and it's slowly becoming a wintry walk tradition..... and just as we're beginning to thaw out from the day. *ping* it's ready. nom. nom.

Ingredients:

4 stale croissants (original recipe states 2 but I've always used 4!)
100g caster sugar
2 x 15 ml tbs water
125ml double cream
125ml full fat milk
2 egg, beaten

*recipe also suggests adding 30ml of bourbon but we skip that bit.

Method:

Tear the croissants up into pieces... not too flakey and put in a gratin / tatin dish. We use a shallow 30cm casserole dish.
Put the sugar and water in saucepan and watch it dissolve as you swill and swirl it around. Little scientists can learn all about how a liquid can dissolve a solid here and here
Put the saucepan on the hob over a medium heat and let it bubble away, don't be tempted to stir it, let it turn a deep amber as it caramelizes (about 3-5 minutes).
Turn the heat down and pour in the cream. It will splutter and that's fine. Whisk, whisk away adding the milk. Little pieces of toffee may form but don't panic these will all go if you keep whisking over a gentle heat.
Take the pan off the heat and still whisking add the beaten eggs. This is your caramel sauce.
Pour over the waiting croissants and let them soak it all up for 10 minutes before putting in the oven - now's the time to heat it ready at 180 oC / gas 4 - for 20 minutes.

serves 4 people.... if 2 of them are small!

My Heart, My Home, My Style

I spend a lot of time in my kitchen; morning, noon and night and all the snack-grabbing, at-the-table-doing-homework and catching-up-with-friends-over-a-cuppa times in between. When I think of my kitchen its full of colour, full of flavour, full of inspiration to cook big beautiful stupendously scrumptious dishes. Its about fun, the noise of banter with friends and family whilst whipping up platters of that oh so splendid homemade food. I think colour. I think large plates passed around a noisy table of chatter with friends. I see cups filled with daisies the children freshly picked from a morning in the park placed next to mismatched napkins that sit together at the table unique and treasured as each of its guests.

Practical no longer equates dull. We try to echo this with a collection in the boutique where the kitchen isn't just a place to cook but a place to get a kick out of cooking. The kitchen is the heart of the home and we want to hear it beating, we want it to feel alive! Give me colourful jugs with utensils spilling out, bright melamine mixing bowls, storage jars, a rainbow of cups and cutlery, baskets full of colourful flavours, and spice boxes to take my taste buds on a journey far far away.

Take 1 large dose of practical, add a bag of great design followed by a large cup of versatility then stir in masses of style. It's delicious!

A kitchen for entertaining as much as for rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in. Because that's our style!

Monday Makery - Patchwork Flowerpots

Valentines Day and Mothers day is soon upon us and both days are days we show our love and appreciation. We want to make sure we give the people we love something that will last and something they can keep as reminder of our love. I love the idea of giving people seeds or bulbs as a gift, something that can grow bigger each day. So we've set about making fabric covered flower pots. As you can see they're still wet but once they're dry we'll get planting.

I'm going to make pretty envelopes with seeds inside with the words 'love grows bigger every day' written upon them to give to the girls on valentines morning. They'll have fun planting the seeds and taking care of them as they watch them grow and blossom into beautiful flowers.

They're so easy and so fun to make and with little materials you can turn a boring plastic pot into a beautiful planter or storage pot.

I'm planning on making a small stack of pots for my mama too for Mothers Day with her favourite flowers panted in each one. I'd like to have a row of them upon my desk for keeping my pens and pencils in too! So I'll be sure the girls show their daddy how to make them.

Here's what you'll need:

flower pots - we used standard plastic ones
PVA glue
bowl
water
fabric

Here's how:

Cut strips of fabric,
mix PVA glue with water in a 50/50 ratio
glue your strips of fabric onto the pot as neatly or as randomly as you like, smoothing out each piece as you go to avoid creases.

Even though I took a more mathematical approach to mine; measuring the top of the flower pot dividing that number between the number of fabric strips to get the width of each fabric and then the same for tapering the fabric at the bottom I think Oona's looks so much better for having just gone with the flow of it.

If you'd like to have your pots kept outside you will have to varnish them to make them waterproof and to seal the fabric from the elements.
