After a while it becomes important to mix things up – for me as much as for the recipient of my missives! So I’ve tried all sorts of themes – I’ve send parts of long poems so that over time he can reassemble them to read the entire poem – Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself  extended across 53 — yes, 53 — letters! So, in a bid to change it up I decided on a little A to Z action — personalised of course.

I like to use stamps – rubber with ink – to spice up my letters and I love seeking out new and fun designs.

I think the kikki.K stamp ranges are my current favourites.

They don’t know who I am. I just love their quirky products!

This year I decided it would be great to have something that means we can share in a tradition though we’re thousands of miles away. I also needed some really light things for his christmas package (the cost of postage is crippling otherwise).

I came up with the idea of Christmas stockings. Not exactly original, but I knew if I made them they would have the requisite loveliness and thoughtfulness quotient required for the occasion.

I found a silk that is smooth and gold on one side and slightly textured on the other. This eliminated the need for batting or lining which I had considered as a possibility. I used the highest quality deluxe faux fur I could find – I really wanted them to feel luxurious.

I started out by using a cheap dollar shop felt stocking as a template. I just pinned it on the wrong side of the folded over fabric and cut out two different sets of the fabric (so I had the makings of two stockings) using pinking sheers. I then used a straight stitch to join the pieces with the right sides facing each other!

I had them pinned and just removed the pins as I showed about 10mm in from the edge of the fabric.

I then sewed a zig zag edging on the fur — it goes everywhere if you don’t create an almost overlocker effect — and had the right side of the fur facing the liner of the stocking to create the cuff.

The final stage is to iron on the cute monogram letters.

Yep. Anna here. The re-entry process from being an ex-pat to being a sister in the sun is more complex than you might imagine. One way to help with the re-entry lag is to recognise that Australia has changed a lot during the almost 5 years I lived overseas. I’m thinking a dose of Australian film might help with that. I’ll probably get all academic about it on goannatree. But here I’ll keep in simple.

As a reference point, I’m going to use Adrian Cooke’s list of the Best Australian films since 1991, but i’m just going to start from 2000. Partly because I’ve seen most of the films before 2000 anyway and also *shush* that actually might make E & K feel quite young and me feel old, and we can’t have that, can we? There are a couple of exceptions to that rule. I’ve also seen a few of these, but i’ll see how I feel about watching those ones again.

Maybe we are. Generally speaking, it’s probably best not to doubt the enthusiasm of the sisters in the sun, as a collective. [A-We may need to invent a collective noun for sisters who blog, or blogging sisters!]

Something else we have quite an abundance of enthusiasm for is Pinterest. Both A and K have their own boards, but there’s one board, appropriately titled “sisters in the sun” where we’ve been collecting inspiration (or pinspiration as A likes to call it) despite still being on different continents. What’s inspiring you today?

The relief was evident in my voice.

The house was no.3 on our list of preferences. It is a cute little weatherboard, complete with picket fence.

We sign the lease and pick up the keys next tuesday. I have no doubt that I will be excitedly sleepless on Monday night.

E and K have gone to more inspections than they care to count, and we applied for close to 10 houses before K and E got the call that we were successful. I’m so grateful for them both.

We haven’t come up with a name for the house yet – believe me that will come soon enough – and there aren’t good enough photos to share yet, those will come too.

The next post will have some photos of the *new* home of the sisters in the sun and some basic stats! We’re pretty excited.

K + E have been inspecting houses. A has been sitting back in Scotland in backseat driver fashion sending links and doing as she’s told (at least some of the time). Three applications are in. Now we are waiting. It could take a while.

The quotidian delights. This is M. she likes to help. She is single minded when she wants to be. She is adorable whether she likes it or not.

Other than the occasional country music quote thrown in for good measure, we’re not exactly sure what will happen either.

The last time we lived together, A was 18 & K was 10.

This blog will be about what happens when two sisters live together in an old house in a beautiful sunny city!

It’ll be a little about what it means to make place and make home.

It’ll be a little about learning to live together and with each other…

It’s likely to involve photos, food, frivolity, and a whole lot of laughter!

And possibly a few tears. not going to lie.
