Eeeyikkeees!! A mouse!!! Not just any mouse, but a DEAD mouse (I thought the poor thing was just a little toy that the cat was playing with but NOOO, he was the real deal!)...being a pet sitter can be hazardous to your health, did you know that? Not only do we encounter strange critters...like this mouse for example...but we also encounter oppossums and benevolent bats on occasion. Now this isn't typical, but it DOES happen.

For todays Freebie Frida , post a picture of a 'scary' critter you've had to toss out, get some spray after or run like h*^% from...AND, most important, share a little background so we can all get a little laugh.

God Creates

God creates. Everyday. Everywhere. He works in each one of us and I believe, in animals. He creates people with certain goals in mind for them, puts talents at their fingertips, gives some the ability to design cookie templates and some the gift of compassion and empathy.

As I was laying in bed, trying to take a nap, this topic just popped in my mind so vividly. With Boston all snuggled in next to me my mind drifted. I began thinking of him and why God made this beautiful dog. Did he fashion him in the hopes that he would come into my life and be my snuggle buddy? Or did he have another purpose for him? I believe God has a purpose for Boston. He knows every sparrow He created so why should my dog be any different.

Here in the next week or two a friend is coming to visit for a while. He's from China. They eat dogs in China if you didn't know! Yikes. This should be interesting. My friend is very excited about staying with me and living with my dogs. The 'American way of life' is a great topic he's studying while he's here in the US and studying, don't know if that's the appropriate word, but anyway, studying me and the relationships I've built with my pets is of high importance to him.

I pray that I can shed some light on this topic for my friend and help him understand that dogs are not just 'dogs'. They are family. They are our friends and companions. Boston will be a good friend to him while he's here I'm sure and he'll love all the extra attention.

Thinking further about God creating I pondered how some dogs are able to detect cancer cells in the body. That's phenomenal. I can't comprehend it. Just like I can't comprehend how a 20 year old young man can be taken from this world when he's in the prime of his life. But I know there's a purpose for everything. To everything there is a season. Creating is what my Father does best. He allows us our own free will. To eat dogs. To abuse dogs. To love our children. Or to abuse those we are entrusted to care for.

This season I'm about to take part in will challenge me, I'm sure. It will be enlightening and inspiring. The culture differences and misunderstandings will make us better people. Boston could've been made for such a time as this. I'm praying that my friend will take loads of positive feelings and an open heart when he goes back to his native country. Hopefully he can help change minds where he lives and the mistreatment of dogs will stop. I'm a realist and know that it takes more than one person to change things but it does start with one.

Will you be one that encourages positive action? Will you be one to step up to the plate and open your heart and home to a person in need? Will you be one to save a lost or forgotten pet in an animal shelter, giving life and hope to that creature?

I hope so. God created us all for good things.

Tumor Trouble

I'm writing this blog with tears in my eyes and my heart very broke at the moment.

Lastnight, my daughter and I were sitting on the couch and Angel, AKA my Angel Baby, was sitting between us. Angel was acting silly, flopping around and giving kisses. Danielle said, "Mom, Angel's got something on her gum," so I looked and was shocked. Shocked because I hadn't seen it before. Shocked because she hasn't shown any signs of discomfort. But most of all I was thrown off guard because her mortality hit me head on.

Sidenote: My ex-husband and I always thought we'd have to put Angel to sleep because of her territorial aggression, in neither of our minds did cancer pop up. I can't speak for him though since we're not together anymore but I am asking his advice about the matter...

So, Angel and I just got back from Parker Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Stites is an awesome vet, he knows about Angel, her past issues, and now--her current problem. He's supportive and thinks we should remove the tumor. He advised me that there could be other problems but for now, the tumor needs to come off. Dr. Stites brought up chemo and other treatment options.

All I can think about is how great a dog she is and how I have to weigh her life against the money I have to treat her. How horrible is that! Money shouldn't be an issue when it comes to health...but we all know it is. People don't get the medical help they need because they're insurance won't pay or worse, they don't have insurance. Dogs and cats are euthanized everyday because people can't afford to treat them. I don't want to do that. Oh, how I DON'T want to do that. I love all of my dogs but she's special, very special. But she's different.

Angel was the first pit bull I rescued. When my ex and I were in the early stages of our relationship he was having an extremely rough time dealing with not being able to see his three children in Iowa. One day, I was reading a classified ad and saw a posting for pit bull pups. I thought that I'd surprise him with a puppy. I hoped raising a brand-new puppy (which he had never done before) would help him focus on something else other than his children. Boy, was I right, but I'm jumping ahead a little...back to how we got Angel...so anyway, I called the number in the paper, told the guy we'd before over to look at the pups.

We were both very excited on the trip there. A mixture of emotions were surfacing. We wondered if a pit bull was a good choice, if she'd grow up and be mean, if our other dogs would like her, that type of thing. Well, when we finally arrived the guy took us around back and showed us three beautiful puppies. One was black and white, one was fawn and one was almost all white and had green eyes. My ex was immediately drawn to the white one. She was content in his arms where as the others were squiriming trying to get down.

The gentleman brought one of his daughters out and she began telling us how she dressed them up and played with them all the time. Little did we know at the time that the pups parents were VERY aggressive to other dogs and were kept separated in the home; the male in the basement, female upstairs with the family (had we known that we probably wouldn't have adopted her). So my ex decided on the white pup. She was adorable and seemed to say, "Get me outta here!" It was very loud, chaotic, with two big dogs barking ferousily, pups chasing each other and little children grabbing and man-handling the pups. The little girl told us the black and white pups name was Oreo and the other was Fantasia. She didn't tell us the white pups name and we didn't think to ask.

We gave the guy $50 and headed to the car. As we were walking away the little girl yelled through the privacy fence, "Oh yeah, her name is Angel". That solidified the deal. I went with the intention of finding a pup that he could look out for and one that would be devoted to him, and we walked away with an Angel. How fitting!

Ok, now back to the present. Whatever decision I make about Angel will be made with a heavy heart, believe that. My ex has been informed and hopefully will help make the decision or at least help ME have the courage to make the best decision for her. I'm not going to let her suffer just so I can continue to have her by my side. That's not fair. She's had a good life, albeit a lonely one in my opinion the last few years since she has to be segregated from our other dogs, but a good life. She's walked in the Indianapolis Bully Breed Bow Wow meet-up (that's a mouthful!) a few times. She's seen many beautiful parks down in Indianapolis, like Ft. Ben, Southwestway, Eagle Creek. We've gone to Mounds and hiked the trails. She's lapped up the water in White River (maybe that's why she's got the tumor) and ran along the Greenway dozens of times. She's accompanied me when I've rode my bike along the Greenway, running and getting some fabulous exercise. She passed her Canine Good Citizenship test and was a willing and active participant in training classes at Muncie Obedience Training Club (MOTC).

Most importantly, she's got to be a "housedog" and know what it's like to not have someone give up on her because of her issues. She hasn't known what it's like to live on the end of a log chain, suffering in heat and cold because her neglectful owners. No. She hasn't had that. She's had a nice bed to sleep in, a couch to sleep on and a huge crate that's her "safe place". She's known what a safe and loving home is like and I wouldn't have it any other way She's handled training and correction for her negative issues like a pro. She's handled being separated from other dogs with superb ease. She's shown many people that pit bulls are like any other dog and with proper training and care, they make fabulous pets. But in saying that, her issues were probably due to bad breeding...so on the flip-side, my ex and I were/are able to talk to people about not buying from backyard breeders and to speak up against dog fighting and the rampant breeding of pit bulls. With positive training and responsible handling she has got to walk on leash with her pal, Boston, by her side. But that's the closest she's come in several years to dog companionship.

Angel has been a great friend and companion these last 6 years. She's comforted me when relationships failed and a marriage ended. She's shown me that we all have "issues" and need the love and support of our friends and family. When other dog trainers told me to put her to sleep, I refused. Dr. Stites was in my corner back when the aggression started, he gave my ex-husband and I many solutions and tips to manage the environment. I thank him for that. Now, he's helping her once again but this time I don't think managing the environment is gonna help. More money and a miracle would though.

If you've known the love of a dog and can feel my pain with this situation, please keep Angel in your prayers. I don't want to see her go but will make the right decision for her. That's what God put us here for; to be good stewards. Of our time. Of our pets. Of our world. We're not here to abuse, mistreat and to take advantage. I'm a better person because I've known the love of my pit bull.

Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem.

Over the last few days I've been really digesting this phrase. I've been thinking about things in life that I've let slip out of my hand, dreams that I've let go of. Plans that I feel have been God-inspired.

I've been afraid of succeeding. I've been afraid to really go after my dreams. All the negative criticism from my childhood have flooded my mind.

Seize the day. Seize my dreams. Go for broke. That's my new goal. In saying that, I feel like I've been going through a catharsis. Dealing with past emotions, hurts and past failures has been necessary for my healing. I want success. I want to be emotionally healthy.

Bring on the purging. Removing people from my life that lie, cheat and that don't have my best interest at heart have no place in my life. God doesn't want that for me. I'm working on surrounding myself with postitive people from here on out. I want to be a light to people I care about, not a dismal glow.

My professional life isn't escaping the purge either. Next on the agenda is to get my web site done...then I'll move on to other marketing and agendas. In the words of a person in my life years ago, I'm not gonna be a 'spoda'... (supposed) 'spoda' do this, 'spoda' do that...I'm going for it now. Going for broke. No holds barred.

Big Mistake

Ok, so I've made a big mistake here in the last few days...somehow I LOST my micro card which had ALL my pet sitting pictures on it. YIKES!! I've looked everywhere but it must have slipped out of the case it was in. Stupid little thing. I should've kept it where I had it in the first place, tied onto another thumb drive! I had a feeling this was gonna happen. At least I transferred some of the material over before all of the awesome pictures of my sweet, silly and beautiful clients went bye-bye by the wayside :(

Bully and Beer

What a beautiful day it was for the Anderson Little 500 Car Show on May 21, 2011.

Our booth got a lot of attention because Boston is a big crowd pleaser! It didn't matter that he was visiting a toddler who waddled over to see him or a person that smelled like a brewery, he treated everyone with open arms and bunches of pittie kisses.

Many people were shocked when we told them what "kind" of dog he was...looks of bewilderment and frowns were common but once they pet him and he reciprocated the attention they were showing, he won 'em over. Right on Boston! You're a very good breed ambassador...

Pet Peeves

I'm feeling a little snippy today & thought I'd share some of my pet peeves...

--playing the "you go", no "I'll go" game at 4-way stops
--people that leave their dogs outside without shelter
--walking into a public bathroom & finding a faucet running (does no one else have the common courtesy to shut it off?)
--going to a restaurant & having to watch a toddler/young person with extremely bad behavior
--people that neglect their pets
--going to get my favorite fountain drink & the machine being out of order
--going to Pizza Hut (in Muncie) to have some fantastic vegetarian, hawaiian -sans ham & cheese pizza from the buffet ONLY to find out the buffet is full of MEAT pizza & they refuse to make ANY veggie pizza :(

Dog Dilemna

I started a new pet sitting job this week and encountered a slight problem on the first visit.

The bashful Beagle, Ellie, did NOT want to come inside when she finished pottying. She would approach the screen door as if she was coming, then fear would overtake her and she'd dart.

After about 10 minutes of coaxing, cooing, sitting down and letting her approach me on her terms, then finally giving her some of my McDonald's french fries, she crossed the threshold and was homeward bound!

Timid, fearful dogs often need more patience and a caregiver that can think outside the box. Their little souls (and bodies) have been wounded in some ways and with love they can learn to trust humans again.

Ellie is learning to trust me: 5 minutes of coaxing today, without food even!

I'm Lil Man

Howdy!! That's me, mommy calls me Lil Man.

It's been great living here the last month or two and I'm SO GLAD mommy rescued me from the house I lived at before.

Man, it was cold there. I was stuck outside without a dog house and had a huge log chain wrapped around my neck. Not only that, but they had the chain wrapped around a tire too. I couldn't escape no matter how I tried. Boy was I hungry! Mommy said I had been without food and water for a couple weeks, maybe more because my old owners left me when they moved outta state. She couldn't stand knowing I was stuck out there, starving, stuck in the rain...but you know what? Mommy found me and brought me food and gave me a home. I love her for that!

My best friend is named Bella. We play great together. I love to bite her legs and chase her tail.

We have a little teacup Chihuahua that jumps on us and bites on our lips. I like to let her dangle and spin her around...she gets dizzy and mommy tells me to stop. The little girl in the house has been great to play with too. She hugs me, kisses me, lets me sleep in her bed. I love to snuggle!

Mommy said I'm about 5 or 6 months old. My hair is black but I have light brindle patches and a white mark on my chest. My ears flop down over my eyes sometimes and mommy loves it.

Miss Nice Lady came to meet me, took pictures and is trying to help us find new homes. Mommy will take us to the doctor to be put to sleep if she can't find us new homes. I overheard her telling Miss Nice Lady that I probably would be killed because I'm a pit bull mix. What's that? I just thought I was a dog!

Here's a little more info about me that mommy thinks you should know: I play well with big dogs, little dogs. I walk REALLY good on leash and would make a great running partner like my sis Bella :) I'm crate-trained and don't use the bathroom in it--yuck--who would do that?!

Take a look at me and Bella playing. We're good together, it would be nice to be adopted together but if we have to be separated, that's fine too. I just want someone to love me. Can you help?

Beautiful Bella Needs New Home

Can you help me?

My name is Bella and I was born May 16, 2010. My mommy and daddy had my parents, (mommy-Great Dane, daddy--Boxer),and they've raised me since I was a wee little puppy. They've been good parents to me but unfortunately, they can't keep me. I heard them saying that they're losing the house--whatever that means--and me and my brother, Lil Man, have to find new homes.

We're kinda sad because we like it here. We have a little girl we play with and a tea cup Chihuahua we play with ALL THE TIME. I love letting her chase me and pounce on me. She thinks she's a big dog and I let her believe it. In fact, I play good with all dogs, big ones, little ones, males, females, doesn't matter to me...I'm a happy gal.

My coat is a beautiful brindle and I'm a little submissive. I love to go on walks, especially with my mommy. When she takes me for car rides we have a blast! I LOVE to run so if you need a jogging partner, I'm your girl!

I sleep in my crate when mommy and daddy are gone and I like it. In fact, I like to hide under the couch or other places if I get a chance...BUT...I've grown so much I don't fit anymore!

Anyway, I need to go as Lil Man wants to play.

If you can help me find a home I would really appreciate it. Mommy won't take me to the shelter because she knows that I'll probably be put to sleep there. I heard her tell Miss Nice Lady that's helping us find homes that she'd rather take us herself the doctor herself and put us to sleep versus letting the shelter do it. She said she knows the 'statistics' about shelters and can't bear having me go to doggie heaven like that. I don't want to go to sleep forever so please help me.

Miss Nice Lady can help with transportation if necessary. She told my mommy she'd help however she could to help save our lives.

52 Year Wedding Anniversary

You never know what blessings God has in store for you if you take the time to stop and listen...

This afternoon, hurriedly I ran into Factory Card Outlet to buy some last-minute cards. As I was walking down the card aisle, an elderly gentleman looked at me and asked where the birthday cards were. In the back of my mind I thought for just a second, hey---I don't work here, but then I paused and said a silent thank you to Jesus for giving me this opportunity to help this man.

As we were rummaging through the unorganized racks, he said he already had an anniversary card but needed to find his one for his wife's birthday. We finally found 2 rows of 'Wife Birthday' cards and began chatting. I'm so glad I took the time to stop and share a little time with this man, the next 20 or so minutes was a real treat!

Here's what he shared with me during our brief encounter:

his wife turns 72 on Jan 30
today is their 52 wedding anniversy
they have one daughter, no grandkids
they had their daughter 10 years into their marriage
he served in the Korea War for 3 years
he served in WW2
he was Lieutenant Commander for 1500 men inWW2, saw many horrible things
he had a stroke years ago, which thankfully removed most of his memory of the wars he served in
he feels the government is taking more and more away from our military unfortunately, one example--once you reach $100,000 gross, the military only pays for medical coverage for 3 years but graciously vets can still be seen at Vet Hospitals and be buried at Arlington...neither of which he is a fan of!
his wife says they'll be buried together (he raised his eyebrows because he wasn't sure if she meant at the same time...LOL)

I asked what the secret to 52 years of marrige were, he said, "A lot of drinking!"

His alcohol problem began when he served in war, he coped by drinking himself, almost to death, but praise God, his wife stuck beside him, he beat alcoholism and today they're celebrating 52 years...that's a miracle in my opinion...

We proceeded to talk about other things, life, government, kids, and he reminded me once again that he had flowers in the car for his wife and he needed to get going. I wished him and his wife a very Merry Christmas and told him to give his wife a big birthday hug for me.

Before we checked out, I thanked him for serving our country, fighting to protect us and for giving himself to his country. I patted him on his shoulder and bid him farewell...as I was walking out of Factory Card Outlet, I thanked God for this chance meeting and for bringing this man back here alive.

........today I'm saying a very special prayer for him. He was such a nice, polite, soft-spoken gentleman, I hope he and his wife have many, many good years left.

Eggs to Go

There's nothing better than farm fresh eggs!

No hormones, no steroids, no chickens stuck in 8" x 10" jail cells being forced to lay eggs. No horrible abuse. No hanging upside down being dipped in a vat of scalding hot water so the feathers can be plucked--sometimes while they're alive...these chickens are living a life of luxury (at least until it's time they become chicken dinner).

My conscience seems to work overtime when it comes to eating anything made with animals and guilt usually gets the best of me when I eat eggs purchased from a grocery store and when I'm eating omelettes or other egg-laden food at restaurants...BUT...right now all I have to say is yum, yum, yum...no guilt, no shame!

Boston and Mommy

The 2010 Luv-A-Bull March was a blast!

Over 300 people & their beautiful dogs, including pit bulls, dachshunds, bull mastiffs & huskies, walked around downtown Indianapolis silently protesting BSL (breed specific legislation) & showing the public how great our dogs can be. Dozens of high schoolers with Future Farmers of America were headed to their event & many stopped to 'eewww & awww' over the gorgeous dogs & the handsome bully to the left gave lots of shakes & kisses. We stopped & chatted with one group of enthusiastic students. The girls indicated they had never seen THAT many pit bulls let alone that many dogs together. I shared my opinion with how the media portrays bullies & one girl said she thought all pit bulls were mean...Boston gave her those sad puppy dog eyes & another kiss. Hopefully that changed her mind!

All in all, it was a very well organized event. Thank you's go out to all the people who volunteered & to all the participants.

10-13-10 nice lady just picked me up, she's taking me to the doctor.

wow, doctor says i weigh 47lbs! doc says i might have distemper & she gave me medicine for infection.

10-15-10 awww, nice lady giving me a kiss, makes me feel so much better! i don't keep my head straight for
some reason, nice lady says i look kinda goofy, all i know is i'm feeling better!

10-16-10 my belly's getting bigger! my scrotum are kinda icky but i don't wobble so much,
nice lady says i'm holding myhead straighter & my gait (whatever that is) is getting better

10-20-10 i love all this attention i'm getting! nice lady feeds me, loves me, gives kisses,
she takes me on walks & says I'm still little wobbly but getting more stable

10-31-10 what a nice day for a walk, i'm enjoying the grass & like being out of the kennel

Tyson--rescued pit bull

On October 13 I received a call from a friend. He wanted me to pick up his dog because they couldn't afford to feed him. After picking the dog up we discovered he was sick. The veterinarian suggested distemper was the culprit but after a few days worth of antibiotics, Tyson is on the rebound.

Tyson's original owner told me that on a few occasions he'd see Tyson picking up walnut seeds then drop them in his bowl of water...that got me thinking. I researched and discovered that walnut seed hulls are toxic to dogs because of a mold/fungi that grows on them. Some of the symptoms mimic distemper...so...not sure if he had distemper or it was walnut seed poisoning. I'm thinking it's more than likely the later, but who knows.

Whatever the culprit, Tyson seems to be a happier boy now.
