Teaching a straight send out with the aid of a jump. www.sitmeanssit.com This video shows the beginnings of teaching a straight send out with the aid of a jump. Initially here, I am using bumpers and a kong. I use different objects because I also work on my retrieving at the same time and the dog has to know to pick up anything that is out there. This will then phase into tennis balls that the dog would not be able to see until he would be right on top of them in taller grass. I would then phase this into just running straight to the end of the area I am practicing in. In this scenario, I would run it from all sides to show the dog different angles. The jump is important at first, because even though it is a ‘visual’ target, it keeps the dog focused on going straight. Using the jump on the return also keeps the dog straight on his way back. You can also vary the program by placing the jump in different spots along the path (sometimes closer or further away from you), or even use multiple jumps. This program has hundreds of variations. Last but not least………the main reason that I use jumps is because the jumps will develop more speed because of the height.

www.sitmeanssit.com Having fun in a park and training my retriever at the same time. Three whistles means for the dog to come. One whistle means for the dog to stop. The dog needs to sit and sit squarely, and to look at me so he can take direction. When I raise my left hand, the dog is to turn to my left. When I raise my right hand, the dog is to turn to my right. I am using the boundaries of the table for the dog to turn sharply and go straight back. Sometimes I am using quick, different whistle commands to have the dog pay attention and to listen to what ever direction I give him whether it is by whistle or by hand command. This black Labrador retriever (“Kohl”) is two years old.
