Once hovering in the top 30-40,000 sites all across the Internet, it is now falling into obscurity.</p> <p>The reason it was once popular was because it really was the best site for SCO Unix information. As SCO declined, I knew this site would suffer. The Operating System is Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3, Microlite BackupEDGE version 03.00.03 with the RDX cartridge configured as a file system partition. I modified the retention time to be only 3 days, as I was backing up to the same cartridge, and wanted to verify that the program would automatically delete the oldest archive to make room. Admittedly, the current backup happens when the system has live user activity, but the users can really notice the slowdown when the backup/verify is active. I did login to the test system while the backup was running to the RDX drive, and it did not seem to slow down as much. This was probably due to the SATA connection being separate from the SCSI backplane for the RDX drive, whereas the Iomega REV is also a SCSI device. It turns out that it responds well, so I took advantage of that to create an automatic archiving script.</p> <p>This is a simple need that I am sure Kerio will add someday. The problem is that some users simply will not ever clean up their INBOX. As it grows larger, the system slows down because it has to search the #msgs directory for free slots. If your business sells multiple products or services, you may very well want to create pages for each part.</p> <p>Effectively, this lets people "subscribe" to specific channels of information. Google <a href="http://www.google.com/+/business/share.html">suggests doing that with Circles</a>, but that would require your customer/reader to tell you what Circle or Circles they want to be in. Actually, he wasn't even my customer - I had been hired by a local Synchronics dealer to do something on the SCO Unix box that was running Synchronics point of sale software. I must have given him a card, which is not something I usually do when sub-contracting, though I have done it when I have had to leave something running and I think they might have to call me about the results. In those cases, I always make it very clear that they cannot hire me directly: I go home with the one I came to the dance with.</p> <p>Anyone, he had kept that card. The phone number on it was long out of service, but the email still works, so I received his message asking me to call him. The idea is just additional safety and the inconvenience factor is quite low. For the most part, all that changes is that I actually have to type an administrator name and the password when challenged. For the very few cases where I need sudo access, I either use fast user switching or just open Terminal, su to the administrative user and then issue my sudo command. Easy enough and it makes me feel a little safer.</p> <p>When I made the switch, I of course had files under the old account. Some were things I knew I'd need immediately, so I copied them to the new account and changed permissions. Others were things I might need, but then again I might not. Well, no, perhaps I had better start with an explanation because not every Mac user has upgraded to OS X Lion yet and even if you have, you might not be using a Magic Mouse or TrackPad. So let's do the background first.</p> <h3>Gestures</h3> <p>OS X Lion (10.7) can be used with an ordinary mouse, but if you use a Magic Mouse (or a TrackPad), you can control many things with "gestures".
