I decided that I was tired of renting an apartment, tired of the income going out with nothing to show for it, and tired of the white walls that all apartments have. Each room I went into seemed like it was created just for me, I loved the flow and the design of the space. The things I did not care for, like the sidewalk bricks, seemed like they could be easily replaced. That was until I noticed that the ceiling height in the living room area abruptly changed about halfway through the room. I asked the gentleman that was there showing the house, and he informed me that it was just a minor difference and not all the details can be perfect in a house. I almost laughed out loud. If you were able to have a sloppy ceiling that is visible without fixing it, what was hiding behind the walls? I immediately ruled this builder out of my search.

A couple weeks later I was on another tour of a place. It was a townhouse in a development that had a lot to offer. Once again, as I walked through I was imagining how I would fit this place into my life, or my life into this place. When I left, my feeling was very positive. The next thing was to bring my parents and see what they thought of it. On my way out of the complex I noticed a group of neighbors on the sidewalk talking, and so I approached them to see how they felt about their community. It was an interesting conversation a guy named Rob had just moved in. Rob was trying to take a shower, but the flow of water was really weak, and then turned yellow. He noticed water backing up in his bathtub and some of his sinks. He immediately called the home builders and some plumbers. The first plumber that came out quickly determined the problem was a clogged water line leading from the house to the street. It turned out that a worker one day thought the drain line would be a good spot to dump his Gatorade bottle, which was acting like a big stopper. Much to my dismay, I decided that I could not deal with the kinds of problems that lead from this type of negligence.

I am currently still looking for a great property that I can call home. I never gave much thought to the home builders before, always thinking it was the real estate agents that I needed to have a good rapport with. Having gone through a couple of extreme house viewing, hearing stories from my friends, and feeling the stress of house hunting alone, I now know that I might be better off with white walls and less responsibility for home maintenance or at least be patient and use one of the home builders in our community that I can trust.

Planning to Travel

I've travelled a fair bit over the past 25 years or so, but I haven't had an overseas trip since 2008. This is a long gap for me because I used to travel at least once a year or once every second year. Do you want to know why I

haven't travelled since 2008? The answer is simple... because I haven't planned for it!

If you think of going on a road trip in a different town, city or country, you wouldn't begin your journey until you planned it using a road map or a GPS. These are tools to help you get to where you want. Without them you'd end up really lost and wonder how you're going to find your way back again.

It's the same as setting a goal and in this instance we'll talk about travel. I hadn't been on a trip because I hadn't done any of the following steps or asked myself these questions, so how could I set a goal?:

What is my budget? Having a figure in mind goes a long way in planning where to go.

What is my destination? If I don't know where I'm going then what's the point? This is where you choose a destination which is within your budget and is a place you'd really love to explore.

What paperwork is required? Some countries are very stringent when it comes to having up to date visas etc.

When do I want to go? This is a valid question in regards to time of year, weather and pricing. The majority of places have a low and a high season and this can make a huge difference to your travel budget. If your budget is really tight then avoid the high season as everything from plane tickets, accommodation and food all go up in price.

What clothing items do I take? This will depend once again on where you go, but keep in mind that if you are going to a winter wonderland, your luggage is going to be much heavier than if you went to a tropical island. What you don't want is to pay an excess luggage bill so be mindful of what you take. One idea is to pack light going to your destination and buying what you need when you get there. You still have to watch the weight of your luggage when going back home!

I will be travelling next year in June when my daughter gets married in Thailand and I know it will be the start of more travel adventures. Once you get the bug it's hard to stop! I've had my hiatus and it's time to travel the world again. First stop Thailand, next stop... ???

2013 Subaru Forester Car Review

With an award-winning engine and having received numerous acclamations since the inception of the third-generation (SH) Forester, this car remains an epitome of well-engineered mini SUVs over a decade later. Despite being launched in an auspicious fanfare, it was not enough to see the marque of a vehicle still grounded

in reality gleaming in metallic blue paint; the distinctive itch for a test drive was overtly noticeable among the overwhelmed motoring enthusiasts.

The forester has been a car offering the best of both worlds, being superbly utilitarian yet with the comfort of an urban sedan. It is sturdy and rugged, but the handling falls nothing short of the brilliance of a passenger car. Previous models have had some engine gasket issues, but such have been addressed in the models beginning 2010. This car doesn't have the largely overrated STI branding, but that doesn't mean its performance is wanting. The only downside here is a reduction in horsepower, though the real effect is hardly noticeable if you have not driven a turbocharged Forester before. Braking power is as efficient as in the Brembo 4-piston calipers standard in previous sport models and the independent double wishbone rear suspension has been redesigned for better handling and a smoother ride over the previous generation. "Sportshift" has been included mated to a four-speed computer-controlled automatic transmission, being a full-time AWD. This means that torque split is divided among rear and front differentials in a systematic manner, with power being sent to the wheels that need it. For example during hill climbing when weight shifts to the car's rear, power is sent to the rear wheels to counter it and when going downhill the power is sent to the front wheels giving the car precise driving preferences. This helps not only in handling but also the car's traction is significantly improved.

Available models

The repertoire here seems to be thinning out for Subaru, with trim levels coming in X, XS, XT and S-Edition. X is the base model, XS the premium, XT the turbo version while the S-Edition is a limited production model. The X trim has a 2.0L EJ20 petrol engine with Active Valve Control System (AVCS) matched to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox while the XS, XT and S-Edition have a 2.5L engine with similar features. And for the first time, Subaru has introduced a new discordant engine. It is still horizontally opposed (pistons are flat and opposite each other instead of being upright), but this time powered by diesel instead of gasoline. This new powerhouse is called the Subaru EE with a six-speed manual gearbox and is available in Europe, Japan and in the U.S

Power output

The 2L EJ20 engine delivers 109 kW (150hp) while the 2.5L delivers 126kW (170hp). Competitors like Honda CR-V might have less power, but certainly this car has very slow acceleration. It took over 10 seconds for our Base model to hit 100km/h from rest, but the turbo-charged XT apparently does it in 6.8 seconds according to official figures making it one of the fastest small SUVs. The turbo version also has greater power output of 169 kW which translates to about 226 hp. It is also not very economical as compared to competitors like Ford Escape and Mazda CX-5, and it's the high time Subaru updated their 4-speed automatic transmission. This is about the oldest transmission in the segment since Subaru adopted it in 1989.

Safety

Standard safety features on the 2013 Subaru Forester include the usual stability and traction control and anti-lock brakes, along with a tire-pressure monitoring system, and six airbags which include front-side and side-curtain ones. It scores well by official certifying bodies, since it attains three stars out of five for its side crash performance but its side pole test is a bit low with two stars. It gets four stars on front crash performance, and four stars overall.

Interior

Inside, the 2013 Forester is a roomy car-very roomy. I should take this to make up for the bland interior, which is not uncommon among off-road beasts. It is here that Subaru once again straddles the line between a compact car and a rugged SUV, being on the fun-to-drive side when you have a camping trip in mind. What you find after opening the door is unfortunately not commensurate with the smooth exterior styling, but comfort seekers will not be considering a Forester in the first place. Upfront, like in the 2006 Tribeca, the dashboard design swoops gently down to a center console and remains what many motor enthusiasts refer to as reserved. Controls are conspicuously straightforward and easy to access, with the cabin design remaining pleasant and highly functional even though the material quality looks mediocre and the finish is well... lackluster. The Forester could be playing the underlying giant game or is simply restrained to attract good bargains since many of the surfaces are quite plain, but it's a practical scheme that lends itself to its intended utilitarian use. As a matter of fact, this is where the Forester turns out arguably as a potent off-roader, alluding to those pictures we see on the internet and commercials of fully packed roof rails. With this in mind therefore, it's evident that the interior should handle kids, sports equipment, excess luggage on those upcountry trips and anything else you can throw at it-and expect the interior to remain scratch-free. We cannot therefore expect it to have Tesla's 17-inch touchscreen; the Forester is meant to deliver when push comes to shove.

Site's like Kelley's Blue Book (kbb.com) and Edmunds (edmunds.com) offer a lot of information as to car values, gas mileage, problem production years for a model, etc. Used car dealers have sales people you can speak with directly that are knowledgeable about makes and models, and quirks for many cars.

There are many other venues to review when looking for a new used car. Consider both online and newspaper classifieds, Craigslist, autotrader.com, carmax.com, carsoup.com, carana.com, or cars.com.

Determine if you are interested in buying from a used car dealer, a private individual or an online site. There are pros and cons for each option. Things like warranties, reputation, visual inspection and communication need to be considered.

Auto Interior Checklist

Sequence
Think about the sequence you want your interior done in... you are better off getting all interior aspects that you plan on having done by a professional done together. You may be able to save some money on labor because it will be easier to get to the carpet, dash, console and headliner out while the seats are already out.

This is especially true with replacing carpet.

Design and Planning
Have an idea of what you want with respect to design and fabrics before your initial design meeting. If you have questions about this please see my article on "Creating a Custom Interior Idea Book" for some ideas on how to do this. During the initial design meeting make a list of the things that should be done before the car arrives at the trim shop. Don't forget important items such as wiring, location of radio, TV's, speakers, lighting systems, gaming consoles and any other technology that will be added to the vehicle so that these items can be implemented into the design.

Gadgets and technology
If you are building a custom car or rewiring a vintage vehicle make sure to do this before it gets to the upholstery shop. A few guidelines on wiring and technology include:

Wiring
Leave extra slack around kick panels, keep the wiring clean, organized and tied up as much as possible and make sure wiring around the steering column is running up and behind the column so that it can be easily hidden.

Entertainment Systems
Make sure all wiring for Radio, T.V., gaming consoles, iPads, speakers, etc. - these additional technologies are in place before the upholstery work begins or at least put in your Hot, Acc, and ground. Plan and wire any amps. Run CD cables, RC cables and Din cables. Stub speaker's wires.

Custom consoles, speaker boxes, enclosures
If the trim shop will be making custom consoles and special mounting in door panels and other areas of the car make sure the upholstery shop is involved or at the very least consulted regarding the wiring requirements for your specific design. This will save you time, money and frustration later on.

Seats and Seat Belts
If you are performing a complete restoration and will be purchasing new seats, I would recommend that you consult the upholstery shop doing the trim for advice on proper fit and seat options. Seat belts should be ordered from the manufacturer rather than having them made by an upholstery shop. Because the manufacturer has superior equipment and technology, it's just a safer option.

Window and Door mechanisms
Make sure that all window and door functions are working properly. For new builds, windows and door mechanisms should be installed, wired and working properly before the trim shop gets the car.

Heat Shields and Insulators
Heat Shields and insulators are usually not part of the estimate provided by the upholstery shop. Talk to the upholsterer if you require these additional products as they should be installed before carpeting or seats are put in the vehicle. If you are doing this yourself or with another shop make sure that it is installed and glued down properly as it can have an affect on the carpet installation.

Head Liner
Determine which style you will be using. Original bow or hardboard sculptured. Keep in mind that the original bow look is classic but does not allow for overhead wiring.

Scheduling & Communication
Get in touch with the upholstery shop at least two months in advance, preferably even sooner. Due to the time consuming nature of interior projects most shops will typically be booked anywhere from two to six months out. The best shops may be booked even farther out. The earlier you call the better your chances are of getting your project done by the trim shop of your choice. Show cars and Antique vehicle owners generally want the best of the best working on their cars, if you are one of them start thinking about the interior months in advance.

A good rule of thumb would be to start contacting shops two to six months before you expect the car to be ready. Give yourself some extra time. If you think you will be ready in a month odds are the car won't be ready for two months. That's okay as long as you are realistic with the time you set with the upholstery shop. If the job is going to be set back by another aspect of the project make sure to keep in touch with the upholstery shop.

I know this seems like a lot of work on your part but it will save you aggravation later on when you take your car in for the interior and it's moved back because you couldn't make your initial appointment or even worse it's squeezed in between other jobs. It's a lot easier to wait another month or two then to be squeezed in. Being squeezed in means the car will be with the upholstery shop longer than you anticipate, sometimes months longer. Your car deserves proper attention and quality should not suffer because of lack of communication.

BUYING AND STORING LOBSTER

Whole Lobster

Whole lobster is usually bought live or pre-cooked. The majority of the lobsters sold live are Maine or common lobster. Because of their large claws they have more meat. Allow

1 ½ -2 pounds per serving. A one pound live lobster will yield about 4 ounces of cooked meat. A two pounder should yield about 8 ounces. When buying live lobster assure that the lobster is lively, when picked up it should look active not lethargic. If it is not active it has probably been in the tank too long. If that happens they tend to lose muscle and taste.

Make sure the shell is thick and hard. Lobsters, like other shellfish, have to shed their shell in order to allow their body to grow. A young lobster does this up to 25 times a year while older, mature ones only molt once or twice a year. Lobster with flexible shells have recently molted which causes the meat to get watery and less tasty. The younger and smaller the lobster, the more tender the meat will be. Live lobster can usually be kept in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours with a moist towel on them.

Sizes of whole lobster;

Chicken lobster: ¾ to 1 pound
Quarters: 1 pound to 1 ½ pound
Large: 1 ½ pound to 2 ½ pound
Jumbo: over 2 ½ pounds

Frozen Tails

Because they have very small claws and large meaty tails, the spiny lobster is used when marketing frozen tails.

Cold-water tails are more expensive than warm-water but they are worth the investment. The cold-water have a firmer meat and are tastier because of the slower growth in cold water. The quality of warm-water tails is not as reliable as the cold-water. On occasion they can become mushy or fall apart after cooking. This happens very seldom with cold-water tails.

Buy raw lobster tails only if frozen solid, watching for signs of age. Look for cottony areas on the meat which is a sign of freezer burn. If they are packaged check for frost or ice in the package which is a sign that they have been thawed and re-frozen. Do not buy tails with any dark spots on the meat. On the bottom of the tail, check for dark meat especially towards the end of the tail. Keep tails frozen for up to 6 months. Thawing can be best done in the refrigerator for 24 hours. In a hurry they can be placed in a plastic bag under cold running water.

Having a professional proofreading company check over your written work for errors is extremely important, as spelling mistakes or grammatical mishaps can be embarrassing and costly. Proofreading your own work is something that should generally be avoided, as I found out first-hand this week by

almost submitting an article related to musical festivals containing the line, 'your festival bag and willies are probably already in order... ' Obviously, the sentence should have read 'your festival bag and wellies are probably already in order... '

Luckily, my proofreaders picked up on the error, so I avoided the embarrassment of seeing the wrong word published. If only the following top five embarrassing and costly proofreading mistakes were as lucky...

1. Seasoning with a sour taste
Just one single word mistake can result in a disaster of epic proportions, as Australian publishing company Penguin found out in 2010 with the publication The Pasta Bible. In a recipe for tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto, aspiring pasta chefs were left bemused by the instruction to season pasta with 'salt and freshly ground black people'. Uh oh! The error resulted in all 7,000 copies of the cookbook being destroyed to the cost of $20,000, a PR nightmare and many red faces!

2. Come on baby, we're going to Cyprus!
Back in 2006, Italian airline Alitalia realised the cost of not proofreading their numbers when a flight from Toronto to Cyprus was mistakenly priced at $39 instead of $3,900 - a very tidy discount! Naturally, the offer was too tempting for travellers to turn down and, by the time the error was discovered, 2,000 people had booked up for flights. In the spirit of the customer always being right, Alitalia was forced to honour the price and lost a reported $7.72 million in the process.

3. Sounds like a bargain
Electrical retailer Comet sadly went out of business last year; however, it must look back on mistakes such as this and realise that they certainly didn't help themselves. In 2002, shoppers on Comet's online store were able to take advantage of a great offer on an Aiwa hi-fi for the 'has to be seen to be believed' price of £8.43. This was a massive reduction on the RRP of £89, but the item was not in the sale, it was simply the victim of some poor proofreading that lost Comet a lot of money.

4. One R or two?
In celebration of President Barack Obama's visit to Australia back in 2010, the country's Parliament House came up with a seemingly great idea to produce commemorative mugs and sell them at $10 apiece. However, workers in the gift shop (clearly better proofreaders than the mug makers) were forced to hastily dump the mugs after seeing the name "Barrack Obama" emblazoned across the top. The cost? An estimated $2000 in lost revenue.

5. Thou have been told to cheat
Proofreading errors are not a modern phenomenon and this one, dating back to 1632, is perhaps the worst of all. The London-based printer that printed and distributed 1,000 copies of the King James Bible was fined £300 and forced to destroy all of the copies when a missing word meant that the seventh commandment was changed to 'Thou shalt commit adultery'. Oops.
