Publishing vaccine by press release?

2020-05-27T16:09:00.001-04:00

Publishing coronavirus vaccine information by press release (hi there Moderna) should automatically trigger a halt in trading of the company's stocks. Until exposed to peer review no such stock should be traded.

This might both limit insider trading opportunities and allow for a cool down period while additional information is brought forward.

Public trust in the scientific method is being undermined to manipulate the stock price.

This pervasive practice is not acceptable!

Sunlight is more dangerous than 5G

2020-05-05T07:40:00.000-04:00

The sun drops 1000 watts per square metre on the people at the beach. The 5G phone signal is about 8 micro watts on the same spot. About 1 billion times weaker.

Furthermore, sunlight radiation is 5,000 degrees kelvin, 5G about 1 degree kelvin!

The Science of Breathing Underwater

Carefully choose what you believe.

2018-05-23T06:55:00.001-04:00

Worth my time

First hand knowledge is extremely rare. Choose your sources carefully as they become your beliefs.

Steve

...
There are many religious views that are not the product of common-sense ways of seeing the world. Consider the story of Adam and Eve, or the virgin birth of Christ, or Muhammad ascending to heaven on a winged horse. These are not the product of innate biases. They are learned, and, more surprisingly, they are learned in a special way.

To come to accept such religious narratives is not like learning that grass is green or that stoves can be hot; it is not like picking up stereotypes or customs or social rules. Instead, these narratives are acquired through the testimony of others, from parents or peers or religious authorities. Accepting them requires a leap of faith, but not a theological leap of faith. Rather, a leap in the mundane sense that you must trust the people who are testifying to their truth.

Many religious narratives are believed without even being understood. People will often assert religious claims with confidence—there exists a God, he listens to my prayers, I will go to Heaven when I die—but with little understanding, or even interest, in the details.

...
People defer to authorities not just to the truth of the religious beliefs, but their meaning as well.

...
None of this is special to religion. Researchers have studied those who have strong opinions about political issues and found that they often literally don’t know what they are talking about.

...
But much of what’s in our heads are credences, not beliefs we can justify—and there’s nothing wrong with this. Life is too brief; there is too much to know and not enough time. We need epistemological shortcuts.
(Ways of acquiring knowledge)

...
I believe that global warming is a serious problem and that vaccines do not cause autism, but this is not because I have studied these issues myself.

It is because I trust the scientists.

Most of those who insist that the Earth is 6000 years old and that global warming is a liberal fraud and that vaccines destroy children’s brains would also be at a loss to defend these views. Like me, they defer, just to different authorities.

...
This equivalence might lead to a relativist conclusion—you have your faith; I have mine. You believe weird things on faith (virgin birth, winged horse); I believe weird things on faith (invisible particles, Big Bang), and neither of us fully understands what we’re really talking about. But there is a critical difference. Some sorts of deference are better than others.

...
Science is not just one “faith community” among many. It has earned its epistemological stripes. And when the stakes are high, as they are with climate change and vaccines, we should appreciate its special status.

Eutherium contract negociations without judges

Ethereum allows people to safely interact trustlessly by entering into neutrally enforceable agreements in a completely peer-to-peer fashion. Because of these properties, decentralized applications such as smart legal contracts would be a good candidate to be developed on this platform.

treaties with some Native American societies in the West. It was naively assumed by the federal government that when "spokesmen" for a band agreed to a treaty that it legally bound all members of their society to its terms. From the perspective of the band members, it really only obligated those specific individuals who agreed to the treaty. If others in the band failed to follow the terms of the agreement, the federal government assumed that they were going back on a legal agreement. This cultural misunderstanding on both sides was the consequence of having radically different kinds of political systems as well as profound ethnocentrism.

Eating the Tamil way by Smriti Iyer, Indian

2017-08-13T18:09:00.000-04:00

In the Tamil culture-

Traditionally, we eat our food using our hand. Therefore, do not ask for spoons and forks while eating with a Tamil family. It is as odd a thing to do, as eating French food by hand without using cutlery.
Use only one hand (usually the right one) to eat. The other hand should not touch the plate (don't even keep it on the table). This hand can be used for re-serving yourself from the main bowls.
Do not touch the serving spoon of the main bowl, with the hand you use for eating. This is called 'echhil kai' (Tamil words) literally meaning 'Saliva hand'. It indicates the hand you use to eat. It is believed that contaminating food by touching things with your saliva hand makes the food impure. It is only to avoid spreading any kind of infection or disease from one person to other.
Do not touch other people's plates while eating (not even with the unused hand). Again, 'echhil kai'.
In some homes, people prefer sitting on the floor to eat.
Do not get up in the middle of a meal. It is considered rude and disrespectful of food and the people you are eating with.
DO NOT WASTE FOOD. Again, it is considered as rude and disrespectful. If you are unsure of the quantity of food you want to eat, serve yourself small portions and go for a re-fill. It is completely okay if you end up serving yourself thrice, but wasting food is out of question.
Never lick your plate directly with your tongue.
Never lick the main bowl. Even if the dish is over, and you want to scrape the dish clear of any morsels, use a spoon to get it out.

Sagrada familia architecture notes

2017-08-06T08:44:00.003-04:00

Gaudí’s observation that God did not “build” in straight lines.
...

What is remarkable about this ethereal forest is its deceptive simplicity. Well before sophisticated, computer-driven calculations, Gaudí had discovered “that an interlinking of parabolic arches and slanting columns can bear the hefty weight of even large vaulting masonry” (Zerbst 208). This allowed Gaudí to do away with the famous Gothic flying buttresses, which he considered “crutches.” Instead of using the flying buttresses to prop the outside walls which in turn supported the weight of the roof, Gaudí used parabolic arches inside the church to transfer the weight inward onto the top of the parabola (curve) thereby supporting the roof directly from below.

The soaring pillars are made primarily of four different kinds of stone, varying in colour and load-bearing strength. The strongest stone, the maroon-tinted porphyry, supports the crossing, the point where the east and west transepts meet the nave. The four columns here will also provide the main support for the projected Christ tower, the tallest of the eighteen towers, at 558 feet (170 metres). Other stones used are local hard Montjuich stone, granite, and basalt.

No flying buttresses, just loads distributed on lightweight parabolas made of tilted columns.
