Nice way to start off a post on a blog that runs on WordPress huh? But really, I was trying time and again to enter some php code into the html editor that wouldn’t be totally screwy once it was published. I tried a couple of plugins and while they did the job somewhat they still allowed wordpress to strip out the opening and closing php tags. One of them even allowed code inside its shortcode to be altered so that ampersands, etc were transformed into their escape characters. Not at all what I wanted. Even though the better working of them provided line numbering and syntax highlighting it didn’t make the grade.

Enter Preserve Code Formatting by Scott Reilly. While it doesn’t offer highlighting or line numbering, it does exactly what I need it to do. It allows me to enter code and have it preserved for you, the reader, to see in it’s original form.

See for yourself below. This is some code that I have inside my funtions.php file that lives in my theme directory.

Nice right? And there are no shortcodes to remember to make this happen. The plugin has an options page that let you set the tags you want it to watch for and protect from wordpress. All you have to do is write your post as you want and it is smart enough to find your code and preserve it.

Now if only the devs at wordpress would make this a feature instead of a bug. I mean really, there is an HTML tab at the editor screen for a reason. So why would you want to strip out the html or any other code? I just don’t get it.
