Regarding the ARIN IPv4 Exhaustion

As you may have heard, ARIN officially issued out the very last of the available IP space earlier today. What this means is that providers and companies will no longer be able to simply request additional IP space from ARIN to meet their needs for expansion.

One result of this is that several providers are already reclaiming IP space that was rented out to their clients in order to refill their own pools. This has been a cause of concern from our own clients as well, so this notice will be our formal stance on the matter.

We just wanted to take the time to let you know that we will absolutely not be doing this to our clients - whether you are renting a single IP or large allocations from us. So long as you continue leasing those IPs, they will remain in your possession, and will not be 'taken back' by us.

We also will not be raising the pricing on our IPs in the forseeable future. And even if a time comes where we expect to raise the cost of additional IPv4 or DDoS-Protected IPs for our VPSes, existing services will never be raised from the price set upon purchase. If you have DDoS-Protection or Additional IPv4 addresses for your service now, their costs will remain the same so long as the service is active.

Secure Dragon LLC: Primary network switch replacement tomorrow (4/12/2015)

Tomorrow (Sunday, 4/12/2015) at around 3PM EST (GMT-5) we will be replacing our primary switch in Tampa due to one of the fans failing and leaving us with just a single fan at this time. We will be failing our network over to our backup switch during the replacement so you should only see a few dropped packets on our network as we failover to the backup switch and then back to the primary switch. Here is the current plan of action:

Install the replacement primary switch in the cabinet.
Bring our backup switch online and ensure the secondary NICs are cabled correctly to it.
Power off the old primary switch so that all servers failover to the backup switch.
Cable up the new primary switch and power it back on (the servers will failback to the primary switch once they see it).
Power off the backup switch and remove the old primary switch.

During steps 3 and 4 is when you may see some network disruption which should be minimal and transparent unless you are directly connected to your service at that time (the connection may timeout or look like lag).

BuyVM New Jersey - Upgrade/Maintenance Announcement

The long-anticipated upgrades for our New Jersey deployment are here!
Starting tomorrow (30 March) at 1500h PDT (GMT-7), the Stallion controls for
the following nodes will be disabled, and the nodes will begin migrating:

>> Node 16
>> Node 17
>> Node 18
>> Node 19
>> Node 20

The 128MB OpenVZ nodes in New Jersey will be receiving new CPUs (L5639
x24core) and a vastly improved SSD Cache to improve performance and
eliminate the recurring issues these nodes have been facing over the past
months.

The 256MB and higher OpenVZ nodes will be having their SSD Cache arrays
removed entirely, and going to a pure-SSD setup. This, along with various
tweaks to the OpenVZ setup and nodes themselves, will improve performance
and eliminate the IO issues that many of these nodes were feeling from being
heavily used.

These migrations will be done live, and will take quite some time to
complete. As each node finishes, the Stallion controls for the VPS will
become active again, and we will send post-migration notices to let everyone
know when things are ready again. Your VPS will be online and available for
use in the meantime, but we do ask that you do not attempt to
reboot/reset/reinstall while migrations are underway, as this could cause
data loss or corruption.

Secure Dragon LLC: Migrating to new hardware in Tampa, FL. (February 8th, 2015)

We are planning to migrate your VPS to a new server to upgrade to newer hardware per our upgrade plans for 2015.

We plan to begin the migration of all of our OpenVZ VPSs from fl1ovz01 to fl1ovz02 on Sunday (February 8th, 2015) starting at 6PM EST (GMT-5) and we are allocating 12 hours for the migrations since we will be doing the migrations in small batches and we need to run tests after each batch to ensure stability of the new node. We do not expect to utilize all 12 hours but we have the window in case we need it.

We will attempt to perform live migrations for all VPSs so you should not experience any downtime but in the past we have experienced the need to migrate VPSs offline due to various factors. An offline migration will result in a reboot of your VPS so the maximum downtime you should experience would be no more than 60 seconds with an offline migration.

Your IPs will remain the same on the new server so there is nothing you need to change on your end.

This new server will be one of our new 100% SSD nodes. It will have 6x Samsung 850 SSDs in RAID10. We have also disabled migrations to and from our Tampa location at this time until the migration is completed.

Please take note that some VPSs will be migrated back to an OpenVZ node with HDDs in the future due to their disk size since some clients have plans that we no longer offer which came with more disk space than our current plans or purchased additional disk space at a reduced price.

If you do not wish to be migrated during this window please open a ticket with our Support department to schedule another time for the migration. Thank you.

Secure Dragon LLC: An update on 2015 and where we're going this year.

It's been a while, so here's an exciting e-mail to give you a peak into the future of Secure Dragon (and it's an awesome one).

First off, we apologize for the lack of communication (although if you follow us on Twitter you've seen some nice little tweets about what's in the works this year). Basically we've spent most of January testing out new servers, RAID cards, and SSDs (spoiler alert: Samsung 850s out perform Crucial MX100s).

SSD Powered OpenVZ Nodes

So I'm sure you've guessed it already (or maybe you follow our Twitter and already knew), we're slowly making the switch to 6x SSDs in RAID10 with this new round of upgrades. Eventually all of our OpenVZ nodes will be replaced with SSD powered nodes which will also include newer server hardware with Dual 6 Core Intel Xeons (24 threads total), more and faster RAM, and newer RAID cards.

Our Florida OpenVZ node is the first 100% SSD node installed in our environment boasting 6x Samsung 850s in RAID10. Clients on our current OpenVZ node have received an e-mail regarding this migration today.

Our New Jersey OpenVZ node is the next on the list to receive the SSD upgrade (6x Crucial MX100s in RAID10), but this was mainly due to us switching data centers and we felt that replacing the hardware was the easiest process to keep downtime to a minimal. Clients in our NJ location have already received an e-mail regarding this.

We do not have a schedule in place for our other locations, but when we do you can expect an e-mail from us when your services will be affected. We will try to upgrade the servers in the order of node population but other factors may be involved. We do not have an ETA on when we expect these upgrades to be complete or how often we will be upgrading the nodes so please do not contact us regarding this as we do not have any answers at this time.

As a result of these upgrades, migrations to and from our FL and NJ nodes have been disabled until the migrations are complete. We have also increased our pricing for additional disk space from $0.05/GB to $0.20/GB due to the much higher costs of SSDs.

1Gbps Ports

We recently made an announcement regarding this, but I wanted to touch on it here so everybody is aware. As of January 22nd, 2015 all VPSs come standard with 1Gbps ports (excluding our Atlanta location, but there is a ticket open to fix this). New Wyvern Alerting

The 22nd was a busy day for us, another announcement that was made was that we've added some alerting to Wyvern to help clients keep closer tabs on their VPS activity. Now Wyvern will open a ticket when a VPS is either rebooted or throttled by our automated systems. Wyvern Security Audit

With all of the updates we've been pushing, we wanted to make sure Wyvern was as secure as possible for our clients and their data. On January 3rd, 2015 we had an external security audit performed on the Wyvern code and we had it back online and fully patched within a few hours. New Jersey Data Center Change

As previously mentioned, we will be migrating our clients out of COLO@'s Weehawken, NJ location to Constant's Piscataway, NJ Tier 4 data center in the near future. There are multiple reasons for this switch, but here's a rough outline of why we are doing this:

1) Our NJ location has been plagued with network outages over the past few months and our data center has been unable to provide us a reason for these, sometimes 3+ hour, outages. Uptime is important to us and our clients.

2) Constant offers some features that will allow us to expand our services in the future so making this change now will allow us to move forward with these expansions sooner.

3) Cheaper bandwidth. Now that we offer 1Gbps ports for all clients, we expect to use more bandwidth and in order to prevent us from reducing bandwidth or increasing pricing we needed to find locations with cheaper bandwidth. While cheaper usually means lesser quality, Constant offers a much better blend of bandwidth so hopefully the network performance will remain the same or be better than COLO@'s.

4) In addition to Constant's 100% uptime guarantee, they also offer a 0% packet loss guarantee which is just as important as being online all of the time.

5) Lastly, we've been trying to diversify our infrastructure so we're not overly reliant on one specific provider.

We have received some comments and concerns regarding the quality of COLO@'s services and we would like to ask that you do not interpret this migration away from COLO@ to reflect negatively on them as a company. We plan to continue using their services in other locations for the foreseeable future.

BuyVM DDoS-ed: Las Vegas Outage RFO - 03February

At approximately 1210h PST on 03February, a very large DDoS was targeted at our infrastructure, aimed at maxing out our router's CPU and bringing down the network. This attack was successful in bringing down networking on a number of client nodes, and took approximately 35 minutes to get under control. All services are back online and running normally at this time.

Ramnode: Los Angeles Launch and VAT

As promised a few months ago on Twitter, we are pleased to announce the launch of our newest location - Los Angeles! RamNode servers are now up and running in one of Equinix's facilities in downtown LA. We have added a new looking glass and updated our FAQ articles to reflect this new option. Our LA network blend is comprised of NTT and PCCW, as well as Staminus for our optional DDoS-filtered IPs. As usual, we are offering the same plans on the same great hardware that we use in our other four locations.

We will be tweaking the routing over the coming weeks as we receive feedback from clients. Feel free to open a support ticket if you notice any strange or suboptimal routing between you and LA. Please provide an MTR for both directions if you do that.

We know many clients, particularly from Asia, may want to migrate from Seattle to LA; however, we have to limit immediate migrations until we have a better idea of how quickly stock will go. We will treat each request on a case by case basis for the next week or two, after which point we will be able to move anyone who wants to change locations.

European Union Value Added Tax (VAT)

The following only applies to clients with physical addresses located in the European Union. Clients with addresses in any other part of the world may ignore this part and check out Other News below.

Since we are a non-EU supplier of electronic services to customers in the European Union, RamNode is required to charge VAT to customers located in the EU. We will be adding VAT to invoices for EU clients starting on February 19 (for invoices due March 1). We send out invoices 10 days in advance of a due date, so February 19 will be the first batch of invoices for March. If you have a valid VAT ID, you will be able to submit it to us starting February 18.

As of October, our Staminus DDoS filtering (available everywhere but Seattle) now covers attacks up to 20Gbps or 10 million PPS per location! Anyone who has a Staminus DDoS-filtered IP with us now has this new level of protection at no additional cost.

Along with other improvements to our services, work on the new in-house control panel continues in the background. We will reveal more via Twitter in the coming months.

This is an e-mail notice to inform you that all OpenVZ nodes will be rebooted shortly to apply a kernel update that patches a critical exploit. There will be some brief downtime of your VPS(s) while the nodes are rebooted but we will be staggering the reboots to ensure minimal impact to clients with multiple VPSs in multiple locations.

We apologize for the brief notice but the OpenVZ developers have deemed this update as critical due to the impact a single malicious user can have on all other VPSs on the nodes. We will post updates to our Twitter as nodes return online from their reboots.

We are excited to announce that the new shorter, sharper .UK domain is now available in OnlineNIC.
To explain the process more fully to your customers, we have prepared the following explanations that maybe useful for you.

Rights to Reserve for Existing Customers

New registrations of .co.uk domains made before 08:00hrs on 10 June 2014 (provided that no other equivalent .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, ltd.uk or .plc.uk exists) will get the rights to the new .uk domain.
After launch on 10 June 2014, any new registrations within the .uk family (e.g. in .co.uk, .org.uk etc) no longer get automatic rights to register the new .uk domain.
Anyone wanting a new .uk domain, where there are no existing domains with rights, will simply be able to register the new .uk domain.
The Rights Lookup Tool for information on who has first rights. Registrants of existing third-level .uk domains (.co.uk, .org.uk, and so on) have priority rights to the corresponding .UK domain for 5 years, and the corresponding .UK domain will be reserved until June 10, 2019 (07:59 hrs). To determine exactly who has the right to register a .UK domain, a prioritization scheme applies. The crucial factor is the date of registration in relation to the Cut-Off Date that was set October 28, 2013, 23:59 hrs.

Here's how it will go down if the same domain name exists with different registrants in multiple second-level .UK TLDs (e.g. .co.uk, .org.uk...):

Top priority will go to the registrant of the corresponding .co.uk.
The owner of the .org.uk will get next priority.
Finally, registrants of the corresponding .me.uk will get their chance.
All other third-Level extensions like net.uk, plc.uk, and ltd.uk must use the Rights Lookup Tool to determine the rights schedule.

Updates and changes.

We want to inform you today of some important updates and changes we've made to the PamFax API.

First of all we have released new SDKs for C# .NET and Java. Especially Java will help those wanting to integrate PamFax in mobile environments.

We have also made changes to the way PamFax works with online storage providers. This was needed because of increased security and changes in the APIs of the providers PamFax currently supports (Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, Google Drive).

Thirdly we have made changes to several API commands (which are all backward compatible).

Uploadcare: Online Image Manipulation

Blur, Sharp, etc.

As you may know, Uploadcare is not just about file uploading. We also handle delivery via CDN that has URL based API on top of it to crop, resize and transform images. During past few weeks we have implemented a number of new image manipulations for you.

Blur

Functionality that was awaited by many users! Gaussian blur is a technique to reduce noise and details from an image. You can choose strength of blurring, up to 5000 (default is 10):

/blur/:strength/

Sharp

Another command we have introduced is sharpening (opposite of blurring). We use digital unsharp masking to make this effect. The sharpening strength can be from 0 to 20 (defaults is 5):

/sharp/:strength/

Progressive JPEG

There are two ways to represent compressed data in JPEG file: Baseline and Progressive. In Baseline JPEG the image is stored line-by-line, starting from top-left corner, and it loads from top to bottom. Progressive JPEG divides the file into a series of scans, so user can see low-quality image while the full image is still loading.

Up until now all JPEG images were implicitly baseline. Now you have an option to get progressive JPEG:

/progressive/yes/
