This morning I went out to breakfast with a few friends and as we talked, I found that with enough patience, I could balance my empty mug on a tilt — kinda’ cool, but very precarious. It reminded me of a few passages in Isaiah where we are compared to clay in the hands of God. Regardless of how crazy or “chaotic” life seems to us, God knows exactly what He is doing and everything is carefully orchestrated to bring about the desired effect. A.W. Pink, talking about the decrees of God, wrote, “Wisdom is shown in the selection of the best possible ends and of the fittest means of accomplishing them.” (The Attributes of God, ch. 2)

He knows exactly what He is doing.

“Woe to him who strives with him who formed him, a pot among earthen pots! Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ or ‘Your work has no handles’? (Isaiah 45:9)

But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.(Isaiah 64:8)

This is Juliet. You might remember her from this post over a year ago.

She is a very good little friend of ours who is teaching us sign language (she’s still learning to speak in full sentences). Just last evening she was so happy that I learned the sign for “flower”, as she pointed at a flower and signed the word. She even congratulated me by giving me a hug and pat on the back when I correctly guessed what she was signing.

There’s nothing like her little girl squeals. Especially when it comes to asking her if she likes strawberries.

In the photo on the right, the breeze through the open window blew a small tuft of hair up. She, Breezy, and I had just been looking out the window to see what we could find.

Praise Him in His mighty heavens!
Praise Him for His mighty deeds;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

I am now officially a fan of Polaroid cameras. :)

Last week I discovered that peel-apart Polaroid film is still readily available and a quick modification would allow me to use a standard battery in one of my cameras. This is the first successful photo, the first few didn’t work, and I must say, the whole process is fascinating and the end result is quite good though it takes some getting used to since the develop time affects exposure and color tone of the print and it is an automatic exposure camera.

If anyone is interested in trying out Polaroid photography let me know as I have another one of these cameras and would be happy to sell it to you with battery, film, and manual. Send me an e-mail at jceinwechter(at)gmail(dot)com.

Also, I am contemplating putting together a full day course for beginning photographers that would include the following:

Camera controls, the power of aperture, and the mysterious exposure triangle.
Posing one and two subjects.
Maximizing your location.
The challenges and power of the golden hour.
Night photography in a historic town.
Basic photo processing and how it affects the actual shoot.

The course would be an entire Saturday with me in a small group of students with focused hands on teaching as I walk you through the process of crafting an image from beginning to end.

The day would wrap up with review, critique, and possibly a photo contest with some educational extras for further learning.

Is this something that any of you within driving distance of the Lancaster PA area would be interested in?

Thanks,
~Josiah

Don’t be too discouraged when you sometimes get the red light. God uses circumstances in our lives to guide us, but they don’t in any way hinder Him! He is sovereign and He will prune and trim us in order to work out His will in our lives, and because He loves us. Place your confidence in Him for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5a)

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. (John 15:1-2)

Sometimes when you lay stretched upon the bed of sickness, you think more upon the word than you did before, that is one great thing. In the next place, you see more the application of that word to yourself. In the third place, the Holy Spirit makes you feel more, while you are thus laid aside, the force of the word than you did before. Ask that affliction may be sanctified, beloved, but always remember there is no more tendency in affliction in itself to sanctify us than there is in prosperity; in fact, the natural tendency of affliction is to make us rebel against God, which is quite opposite to sanctification. It is the word coming to us while in affliction that purges us; it is God the Holy Spirit driving home divine truth, and applying the blood of Jesus, and working in all his divine energy in the soul; it is this that prunes us, and affliction is only the handle of the knife, or what if I say the ladder which the gardener takes to reach the vine, so that he may prune it all the better! (C.H. Spurgeon A Sharp Knife for the Vine Branches

It was such a delight to take family portraits of sweet friends a couple weeks ago. After two re-schedules due to the weather, the Lord blessed us with a gorgeous, golden evening as the warm sun shown through the trees.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

—Psalm 19:1-6
