Lunch Luck is a simple Django (python) web application, that queries the Yelp.com API to return a random location for you to have lunch.

The existing source code for the project is located at the link below  along with a guide for the source code of the application, along with some new suggested features (we gladly welcome any additons).

Previous Six Hour Startup projects include Timelope.com, a Firefox plugin that allows you to share your browsing activity with others,  and LunchLuck.com, which suggests a random place to eat.

Six Hour Startup is a bi-monthly event where we try to build a new product in the course of Six Hours. We also have an annual conference which focuses on the fundamentals of building a company. Check out our Frequently Asked Question page for more details. link

Our next event is going to be in March and its focus is going to be on finding co-founders for a new company.

Andrew Woods will be leading a project to build a “tweetup” organizer, so those of us on Twitter (who isn’t?) have a more convenient way to meet in person and converse in more than 140 characters. Right now tweetups are almost always organized *on* Twitter, which is not the most convenient place for keeping track of events.

The app will be built in PHP, but no knowledge of PHP is necessary to participate. Available roles include copywriting, biz dev, marketing, UX, security, front-and-back-end programming, and beer-drinking cheerleader. Graphic designers are especially welcome!

If you’re not familiar with Six Hour Startup, we organize monthly events with a goal of completing a working prototype in six hours. Anyone is welcome - no programming or business experience required. The goal is to have fun, learn something new, and create a useful app that we can share with the community. A tweetup organizer would be an especially great service for Seattle to share with the entire Twitter network.

The functions integrate with any web development stack, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Django or any other RESTful application stack.

We think Twilio is a great system made by a local Seattle entrepreneur, and we are excited that we are going to get to use it this weekend. Twilio is going to give a brief overview of the service, and have people on hand to  help us ‘turn on’ phone services for our existing projects or new ones that we dream up.   Twilio will be donating services to get our projects up and running for free at the event. 

Here are some project ideas that we’re confident can be built in 6 hours:

Dial A Joke

- Call a phone number, get a joke read to you!

Office PBX

- Answers the company phone, plays a greeting, and lets the caller enter an extension to hear hours, directions or to speak with a person

E-Commerce Integration

- Notify a customer when an order has shipped, handle incoming requests for order status (has my order shipped yet?)

Microsoft has generously offered to host the next Six Hour Startup, so rather than it being held at Giraffe Labs it is going to be held on the Microsoft campus in Redmond Washington. The event will be held in their Platform Adoption Center (Which is building 20 on this map).

1. Integrated Development Environment / Text Editor: I use Emacs, but you can can get an IDE up and running: Eclipse or Wing IDE
Source Control: Install TortoiseSVN subversion client

3. Install Ruby 1.8.6 or later
4. Install Ruby ‘gem’ package manager.
5. Install required gems: 
   • rfacebook 0.9.5 (to call FB API)
   • log4r 1.0.5 (to log messages)
   • rails 1.2.3 
   • rails 1.1.4
   • fcgi 0.8.7 (only required for production)
   • hpricot 0.6 (to parse FB responses)
   • mysql 2.7

If you have never installed Ruby or never programmed in Ruby, then steps 3-6 can be quite tricky. Please try to work this out on your laptop beforehand. I’ve had experience installing this on Fedora Core & Mac OS X.
