Music Networking Happy Hour

Please join us this coming Wednesday, September 13th for the MetroMusicScene.com/Six Points Music Festival happy hour at Iota Club and Cafe in Arlington, VA. The event runs from 6pm to 8pm and is free. IOTA's open mic begins at 8pm (sign up after 7pm), so feel free to bring your instrument along too (no drum kits, please).

These happy hours are designed to give musicians, music industry professionals, music fans and anyone else who would like to attend, the opportunity to network outside of the typical show scene. Basically, the happy hours are meant to be an opportunity for people to get together once a month, have a couple drinks and talk music or whatever you'd like. If you get there and don't recognize anyone, look for the people with the masking tape nametags.

The Six Points Music Festival and Metromusicscene.com will kick off a series of monthly happy hours next Wednesday, April 26 at Dc9 at 7:00 pm.

The happy hours will provide an opportunity for networking with local musicians, venue owners, local music media, music fans, and the Six Points planning committee. If you are interested in volunteering for Six Points 2007 or would just like to network with others in the DC/NoVa/Md music scene, please come join us.

The End of Six Points 2006

13 venues and over 40 bands were involved this year. The festival has been written up at least 4 different times by The Washington Post this week, NPR affiliate WAMU 88.5 FM has aired a piece on Six Points three times in the past day, DCist has given Six Points a great deal of digital ink, On Tap magazine featured the festival in their lastest issue, and DC101's Local Lix dedicated a large part of their show this week to Six Points. And that's just a portion of the press the festival has gotten.

A huge thanks to the venues, the bands, the volunteers, the media, the music fans, the Washington Area Music Association for their sponsorship, the MetroMusicScene.com community, and everyone who got involved with Six Points this year. We couldn't have done it without you.

Be sure to be on the lookout for submission details for the 4th annual Six Points Music Festival (to be held in 2007) sometime this fall!

*Please Note - Heather Huff will now be taking over as the Six Points Music Festival Planning Committee Chairperson for 2007 although Melissa DePaulis will remain with the festival in an advisory capacity.

The festival was mentioned this morning on WAMU. It was a plug for Friday's Metro Connection and mentioned how Austin has SXSW, New Orleans has Jazz Fest and DC has Six Points!

WEBR did a 2 hour special on Monday featuring in studio performances by Army of me, Lucky Day and Lejeune and interviews with Shane Hines, Mike Holden, Melissa DePaulis and others. Fitz emailed our myspace and said he's going to try to play Monopoli and talk about the festival on his Friday show.

Melissa DePaulis and the Hickories will be on WAMU's Metro Connection Radio show on Friday at 1 pm. Host, David Furst will be interviewing Melissa and the Hickories as well as playing some tracks from other Six Points artists. You can stream it online at http://wamu.org/programs/mc or listen in on 88.5 FM.

On Monday, Six Points Music Festival 2006 artist Sol and Six Points 2005 alum, Daniel Lee were featured on XM Radio's UPop station (XM29) during the Ted Kelly's World Party morning radio show and promoted the festival.

On Friday, April 7th at 1pm, Six Points Music Festival 2006 artist, The Hickories, and the festival's Planning Committee Chairperson, Melissa DePaulis will be featured on WAMU's (88.5 FM) Metro Connection Radio show. Host, David Furst will be interviewing Melissa and the Hickories as well as playing some tracks from other Six Points artists.

The Hickories will be performing during the Six Points Music Festival at the State Theatre on Friday, April 7th at 8pm, opening for Taylor Carson Band, Getaway Car and Emmet Swimmming. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased in advance online.

On Monday, March 27, 2006 beginning at 7am, Six Points Music Festival 2006 artist Sol and Six Points 2005 alum, Daniel Lee will be featured on XM Radio's UPop station (XM29) during the Ted Kelly's World Party morning radio show.

We are pleased to announce the line-up for the 2006 Six Points Music Festival, showcasing 40+ bands at 13 D.C. area venues, Thursday, April 6th through Saturday, April 8th. The selection committee would like to thank the nearly 200 acts who applied for this year's festival. Every submission was listened to by the selection committee and we appreciate all of you taking the time to apply.

In determining the festival line-up, the selection committee rated each of the 194 submissions, on a scale of 0-5, in the areas of Songwriting/Lyrical Content; Vocal, Instrumental and Overall Performance; Originality; and Visceral Reaction. The average of the committee's votes for each performer was calculated and they were ranked accordingly. The committee then selected the highest ranking performers based on the number of slots available, taking into account the stage specs and musical genres that would be most appropriate for each festival venue.

This year's selection committee for the festival was chaired by Heather Huff and Adam Simkin (Entertainment DC), and included Jenni Chase (Capital Scene), Amber-Therese Foster (DC101 Local Lix), Amanda Mattos (Music: DCist.com), Joel Didriksen(Kingpin Photo/NPR's All Songs Considered), Eric Boucher (Bigyawn.net ) and Richard Brewer ( Independent Promotions Consultant &10 year Music Industry Veteran).

The 3rd Annual Six Points Music Festival will take place April 6 through 8, 2006, showcasing live music at venues throughout the Washington, D.C. Metro area, including The State Theatre, IOTA Club & Cafe, Jammin Java, Velvet Lounge, Strathmore, DC9, Staccato Music Hall & Lounge, Whitlow's on Wilson, Galaxy Hut, Clarendon Grill and other to-be-announced venues.

2006 Six Points Music Festival Details

[Washington, DC] (December 1, 2005) – The third annual Six Points Music Festival, will take place Thursday, April 6 through Saturday, April 8, 2006 throughout the Washington, D.C. area, showcasing performers at DC9, IOTA Club and Café, Jammin’ Java, Rock N Roll Hotel, Staccato Lounge, The State Theatre, Strathmore, Velvet Lounge, Whitlow’s On Wilson and other to-be-announced venues. This year’s festival will again be co-sponsored by its founding organization MetroMusicScene.com and the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA). The festival is now accepting submissions from artists through January 15, 2006 and the line-ups for this year’s festival will be determined by the festival Performer Selection Committee and announced in early March.

Artists can submit materials to be considered for inclusion in the festival through the submission form available here. A CDR containing four original songs is required along with the submission form or artists can opt to include their MySpace.com web address on the form in place of a CDR. Full length CDs will not be accepted. A $10 submission fee is also required along with all submissions. The money collected through these submissions fees will be used to purchase advertising and promotional materials for the festival. All submissions must be postmarked by January 15, 2006. Out of town bands are welcome to submit materials although the selection committee will focus on Washington D.C. Metro area performers to fill approximately 75% of the festival’s line up. Last year’s festival showcased over 40 acts.

Founded in 2001, MetroMusicScene.com is a website, consisting of a D.C. music news blog and a 1,200+ member Yahoo Group, dedicated to increasing awareness of and participation in the vibrant music scene in and around the Nation’s Capitol.

WAMA is a non-profit tax exempt organization of music industry professionals committed to raising the profile of the region's diverse music community. WAMA's main goal is to promote Washington area music in general and to achieve national recognition of the region as an important center for live and recorded music.
